  • Join us on an unforgettable journey through a challenging lambing season during a holiday weekend, when our usual student helpers are away. This in-depth video documents our trials using a new breed, the Texel ram, which presented us with a new set of challenges.
    Witness firsthand the dramatic moments of our first sheep aborting with a bizarre-looking foetus, followed by the struggle and eventual assistance required for a massive lamb birth from a Texel ram. We explore the viability of using terminal rams, discussing the potential benefits and significant challenges, such as increased lambing difficulties and higher mortality rates.
    Experience the highs and lows of sheep farming, the critical decisions we face, and the implications of breed selection on both the health of our sheep and the overall farming operation. Additionally, see how lack of sleep and high-pressure situations lead to poor decision making in the farmyard.
    This video is essential viewing for anyone interested in sheep breeding, agricultural science, and the realities of farm life. Whether you're a farmer, student, or simply curious about rural living, "Lambing Drama: Giant Lambs, Strange Births, and Sleepless Nights" offers a unique insight into the challenges and rewards of lambing season.
    Thanks for watching, see you next time...

    I love that you talk about selecting rams and evaluating them. I've said that, for a commercial flock, I would I would only save twins. I've seen local sheep that always produce twins. Reduces the aggravation of fostering them. Ease of lambing is also important. I think people need to set their priorities. I see too many that gripe about things, but don't act to change them. Love your channel!

    I think I may have mentioned disinfecting the tags as they may well be injecting infection. Perhaps young Kyle could take on some of your pet ewe lambs, dad permitting, and develop his own little starter flock, he will get advice and help from yourself when he needs it. We used to winter shear and house for six weeks. It gave the pastures a winter rest. Enough summer grass for haylage. The ewes housed better shorn and went out with an inch of fleece on their backs. That tended to make them seek better shelter for their lambs . You do need to put them in fields with thick hedges or other forms of shelter and the ewes need a quality feed. I also found level feeding was best and worked better than graduated feeding as there was no overload. Admittedly the odd stressed ewe suffered wool slip and ended up in a calf jacket. The ADAS advisor was a bit gobsmacked at stocking rate achieved. We came from England to West Wales so he was not familiar with the system. Of course shed hygiene is paramount. Consistent R &U grades that don’t give any trouble perhaps. I agree with the joint ill protocol. My vet used to also prescribe mutivitamins as the antibiotic has an adverse effect, especially vit E.

    Another great video! I usually run Texel and Charollais rams. This year got a Suffolk as well. All good lambs but I think the Suffolks r head and shoulders above the others. Saying that the Charollais lambs don’t look like much now but they will weigh and finish every bit as well as the Texels usually.

    it's been quite the lambing for a lot of sheep youtubers across the UK and Ireland - massive single lambs (many hung and died) and I think it is the wet and warmer winter with more feed, dog attacks, foxing just killing lambs for the sake of it, joint ill (inside lambers only for this one) - everyone is exhausted but most still have some lambing to do - it's been a hard lambing year all round really

    Hello David , we run a commercial flock here , have had numerous problems over the years with joint ill , deff a good clean dry bed , white lime between every new ewe and lambs introduced into individual pens ,and also do your large group pens with white lime every few days to keep bacteria down , iodine navel straight away after birth and colostrum is a good solid preventative , but v hard to keep up throughout the lambing due to numbers lambing and tiredness , another preventative which works 100% we find , is betamox LA half a ml into the neck of each lamb , only on your vets advice of corse , your always gonna get a couple , love your videos , keep'em coming 👍

    David may I suggest with that big 16 acre field to put some temporary shelters around the field. I myself use wheelie bins but things like pallets well you know yourself whatever is around the yard. Just for a few weeks till they get hardy

    Could the joint ill be caused by the applicator that you use to put the tags in the ears? You said you thought it was the tags themselves. But maybe if you dipped the applicator in some soapy water or some other kind of antiseptic?

    Your problem with two few sheep in summer and two many in Winter is a general problem, you have to try and balance the best way you can 26:34 , how many ewes per acre can you carry during Winter .? How many ewes per acre to carry during summer to keep grass in check? What is the best number to keep to get it as close as possible ?

    Well David you are correct the Continental ewe crossed with the Continental ram are all a intervene job .it has it ups and downs I find that I have to pull 60% of my lambs which are 5 kgs up on doubles I pulled a 10.3 kg ewe lamb 2 weeks ago .you have more prolapse also now saying that you have them gone at 18 to 25 weeks .paurics right I took them poor prices for u grades creep feed lambs as I got more for them weedy one later on . I'd love to try a few different breeds Lester mule types and see if the lambing ability is any better .I m lambs ewes this past 40yrs Suffolks chars texals vendeens beltexs blue texal rouge Lester's all crossed over and back .its time for a change I'd be thinking as im tired living with them. Best of luck with the rest of the flock. Ps I get that joint ill and I'm putting everything that's on the market on them .if it's in the shed youill get it but for peace of mine I do it anyway at lease you tried.

    Would it make any difference in the field that has no shelter, if you put a few bales of old straw out in a U shape to act as a wind break?

    • @sheepschool365
      @sheepschool365  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Absolutely anything to break the wind would help. Unfortunately straw is very scarce this year and bales are much too scarce and expensive at the moment.

      What about haylage bales? We feed dry hay and I put round bales to the north. Oklahoma wind can be brutal. 100 miles per hour straight winds. The worst part of winter!

    I know that everyone feels they need to give their opinion of how to do things. My philosophy on if you should step in and help an ewe give birth, is if you have the gut feeling to help, then help. The lambs are your livelihood. We lose some that we completely did not expect, so helping by stepping in always increases the chance of survival in the here and now, not in the future as far as will mom lay on the lamb, will it develop a disease and not survive, or a predator get it when turned out to pasture. Getting it a good start in life is always the best option and something we can do to increase the chance of getting it to the point of sending to market.

    • @sheepschool365
      @sheepschool365  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @games2k189 I think it's more a management issue of the single bearing ewes being fed too much grass over the winter. The double & triplet bearing texels lambed with no major problems..

    Great lamb that texel , but your right too big a head , sure its first thing to come out along with feet in a normal lambing presentation and the first thing to go in the abbitoir bin , a smaller lamb at birth is easier on the ewe, ' a living mouse is better than a dead elephant '.

    Better to help a ewe lambing, sooner than later, not just for the lamb sake, but for the ewe's. Not sure what a person thinks they are proving making a ewe struggle, when the lamb has presented itself, just help, even if it's just pulling a leg to make room for the shoulders. Wish you could feel the pain that ewe is in, if it were you in her wool you'd be screaming for someone to pull the lamb. Ask your wife, if you'd ever been in labour, you'd understand

      Correct. I wouldn't leave a ewe that long.
      And also the ewe would need a antibiotic an pain relief after that ordeal ..an plenty of lime in the pens where the ews are lambing an clean straw after every lamb an ewe.cuts down big time on joint ill strong antiseptic on the novels of lambs also. ..I do.that an no joint ill just a tip.

    • @sheepschool365
      @sheepschool365  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I think intervening too early is a bigger problem, especially with a big lamb like that. It can cause more stress to the ewe with a rip or a tear inside the sheep which in my mind is a much bigger problem! Blood on a lamb is usually a tell tale sign. It's a fine balancing act...

    • @S_Eglington
      @S_Eglington 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sheepschool365 If the head is swelling it's only going to get harder. I've had texel X ewes that never managed it and I've ended up pulling a dead lamb. Maternal breeds often work out better. If a presentation is wrong then earlier is best so you don't have so much trouble getting it back to manipulate. Berrichon is a good alternative to a Texel easier to lamb and the auctioneers can't always tell the difference so they're sold as texels anyway.
