- Welcome back to Sheep School where everyday with sheep is a school day! In today's video, we dive into the ups and downs of sheep farming during the silage season. After all the rain, our neighbour has finally started cutting silage, but we encountered some unexpected challenges with our sheep.
Our flock managed to escape through a hole in the fence, and we had to act quickly to get them back and we move them to fresh grass for their upcoming vaccinations.
Join us for a day filled with sheep herding adventures, field maintenance, and prepping our lambs and ewes for their health checks. We also share insights into our Texel lambs and discuss the importance of good genetics in sheep farming.
You'll see our trusty sheepdog, Robbie, in action, helping us manage the flock and keeping things under control. Plus, a bit of unexpected mud drama adds to the excitement as we navigate the challenges of farming in the Midlands of Ireland.

Another great video. I have spent the last few days daging ewes and bending and dosing lambs. For my birthday my husband bought me a head stock from your shop. It made a back breaking job a bit less backbreaking. It worked great for the mules and swaledales but the welsh and shetlands heads were too small so I had to resort to bailer twine. It is definitely easier with your headstock.

There is a way to feed the chain slightly differently to hold smaller heads. I'll try & show it in a video soon 👌

I was watching Adrian from I Farm We Farm last night - he has slugs in his silage field - you will need to check yours David - Fluke for sheep and according to Adrian can kill cows - the wet winter just keeps on giving - when he was talking at that stage of the vlog didn't know how he was going to get rid of them before harvest as the slugs can't go into the silage pit

I have a question, is their any difference in the quality between the shearing of the ewe sheep or ram sheep with the wool prospects. 🙂
Think the real difference is between different breeds. Lambs wool is probably more valuable as it is very soft.
When I was living In Roscommon my neighbour had sheep he would bring them through our hse for fun to rile my wife

Very very poor demand for wool in this part of the world. Lucky to get rid of it. Quite a bit going into manure pits..

31st of August in Roscommon Mart. Usually the first Saturday in September but it's a week earlier this year.
