Unfortunately enlisted removed campaigns in favor of countries/factions and screwing balancing with it. It makes me sad how far it’s fallen because of it and how gaijin is trying to make it like war thunder instead of making it unique. At least we have half life to sooth the pain.
Slight correction, Axel himself didn't release the beta leak, he shared the files with one of his friends and they were the one to release it to the public, and he's shown regret over what he did which is also what led to him only getting 3 years of probation
@@uDaniels if i am not mistaken, i believe he did. leaking such information is a very serious crime that, when caught in committing said crime, can net you nearly 10 years in some cases, depending on the severity of the leaked info.
@noah4822 time to reply to a 5 day old comment to answer the question: If I remember correctly they aren't known and that means they weren't caught so no I think they got away with leaking it (I may be wrong feel free to correct me)
In the first Portal, GLaDOS mentioned that she's preventing "them" from entering the facility. Also, the facility was locked down ever since she killed of all the personnel, snd I doubt she would open it again so she could be disturbed. And even if they managed to get inside, it's not like the portal gun is laying there on every shelf. Given that they even know that they are supposed to be looking for it, or at least for the technology.
also, since GLaDOS can change up chambers, it’s likely she’ll lead them on a goose chase by constantly restructuring the entire facility to make sure they would never reach the portal gun
You'd also think *some* form of government or corporate oversight would be trying to regain control over the facility, but there's no one to even bother cleaning up the whole mess. I think that's the most telling implication there's no one left alive on the outside.
Wheatley also mentions that there's a bunch of chambers with skeletons in there, and Glados remarked she was saving them, when in fact they were just rooms kept locked so they would die in them
While Epistle 3 was supposedly meant to be cannon at one point, I really like the idea that the actual writers make fanfiction for the series' they write.
Huh? When the actual writer of the series comes up with story, it's called a draft, not fan fiction. Also it's pretty clear that was the plot for Episode 3, and the only reason he said Epistle 3 was "fan fiction", was to protect himself legally, and to make sure he didn't ruin the chance to go back and work on Half Life again. And then a few years later, he went back to work on Half Life again. 😆
How is a Costco run by, at maximum, 12 people!!? Either the people in Grace are really passionate about wholesale or most of their employees don't live in Grace 😆
1:56:20 If I’m remembering correctly Gman even pulled out Gordon’s original crowbar when he and Alyx were talking about Gordon. Could be possible he gives it to Alyx as a sort of employment gift.
@@itsmanos_yes but the events of Alyx couldn't have happened before HL2 in the original timeline because Eli dies. If the events of Alyx happen, then Eli is saved by past Alyx. Time fuckery basically, doesn't make much sense to me either but I'm sure we'll get a better idea of it when/if we get more games. It's also explicitly cannon that this is a multiverse, so I guess that could explain it but I personally hate that explanation
Great Iceberg! This might be one of the best I’ve seen yet! A Few Corrections and Additional Information: - Distorted Trumpets is only a sample used in the song, which I believe is just called “Radio” in the OST. The other sample used is called “Is That The Door?” - “You’re not supposed to be here, as a matter of fact, you’re not,” is the full version of the quote, and it was also used in the Hazard01 test level as well as an E3 trailer called “Psych” - I think the theory that Blue Shift is non-canon stems from the special HEV charges they use in the game, that are styled differently then the one that appears in Eli’s Junkyard - The “Missing Songs” entry is likely referring to several songs that come with the Half-Life 2 OST, but are never feature in game, including Headhumper, Biozeminades Fragment, and Combine Harvester to name a few. - The quote that makes people think Vortiguants are self-aware is also another thing the singing Vortiguant says, “far distant eyes watch out through yours.” - Real Time Moss, Alien Breeding, and Timeline were all ambitious features suggested by Gabe Newell, and whether or not the Valve team took them seriously is debatable. - The “Nihilanth is G-Man” theory is important because it was popularized by the youtuber Matpat, and sparked some outrage in the Half-Life community when it was first introduced. - The reason why Otis was censored in Opposing Force is because every character had to be censored in the German Multiplayer, including humans like Otis. - Ninjas is a reference to Freeman’s Mind. - XCCR is a dead ARG, and is believed to no longer be solvable, which is why nobody has figured it out yet. - I think Grace, Washington is a town featured in a texture from HL1, but’s very obscure, and I’ve never seen it. - “Freeman is the Bad Guy” is misleading because it’s a theory referring to all the people Gordon gets killed accidentally, not just in the resonance cascade but just in general. This video is a good explanation, it’s a really interesting idea, th-cam.com/video/npXqBBvRvko/w-d-xo.html - The Blue Zombie is an older zombie model only seen in screenshots and is linked to a scientist model that has likely never been seen before. This explains it: vcc.wiki/wiki/Scientist_(Evolution)#Version_4:_Concept_Art - Slickface Barney is only rumored to resemble slick, but there has never been any proof they are the same model. - G-man’s crow is named “Crowley” in the Hammer Editor - The Early Robo Grunt Model has sort of an interesting story, there is more about it here: vcc.wiki/wiki/Early_censored_Models
A addendum to first information, the Radio also uses "Ooyayoolyah" in the background of "Distorted Trumpets" - all of the samples in Radio are from the sample library called as "Cuckooland - Ghost tn the Machine" by Zero-G.
another possible addition is breen being good. it coul be a reference to the theory that breed was being comically evil on purpose to give humanity a single figure to hate, rather than the all powerful "combine", and when he was defeated, to give hope.
1:33:37 Not only that, in Chapter 12 when you are driven around the Citadel inside the pod, you can see yellow tubes stretching by the walls of the structure. If you look closely at their texture, they seem to have veins on them. Still, maybe not the whole Citadel, but large parts of it can be a synth on Its' own. Btw, huge respect for covering the entire iceberg
2:12:16 this refers to the original iceberg chart that started the trend-the sm64 iceberg. it featured an infamous entry saying "every copy of sm64 is personalized", which has since evolved into both a meme and a creepypasta
I think the thing about Adrian Shepard in stasis is that he's probably just frozen in time until he is needed for a certain event or mission. The key factor to that is the line that Eli said to Gordan in Black Mesa East. "My god, you haven't changed one Iota, how did you do it?" Which i believe that they stop aging during stasis further proving that time is just frozen for them, including aging. So i still believe Shepard is still alive and will be reinstated by the g-man somewhere in the future.
On the flip side, I don't think there's any "stasis" at all. I think what this stasis state G-man has put Gordon and Adrian in, is simply some parallel or isolated dimension, quantum theory stuff that G-man is known to be able to control irrespective of time and space, and it's more like Gordon and Adrian are just thrown right into their next "chapter" so to speak when G-man and his employers deem it. So it's not like they sit those years out asleep or frozen so to say, instead they are put in the future straight up, at the place and time the G-man has decided. To Eli, it's like Gordon didn't age in the span of those 20 or so years. To Gordon, he probably didn't spend so much as an hour between Black Mesa and City 17, just straight into the future. It probably works like that, because Half-Life: Alyx's ending shows Eli IMMEDIATELY aware that Alyx is gone and that something happened because of G-man, so it did happen in the moment. Like she was there and suddenly isn't. Or maybe it's just stasis or both and I'm on another sleep deprived binge on G-man and Half-Life theory.
@@darkySp Makes sense. If G-Man can time travel as seen in HL: Alyx, there is no reason for him to make Gordon/Adrian wait in statis for any length of time when he could just pull them from the end of their first adventure to whatever point of time he needs them at. Maybe he left them in that void for a few hours to get some sleep or something, I dunno. Gordon was running on no sleep for three days in HL1 (Unless you count him getting KO'd by the military as "sleep"), if the G-Man just put him on the HL2 train he'd probably instantly collapse after the adrenaline wears off.
@@paradoxicaloutcome1007 HEV suit probably helped with the fatigue side of things, too. But yeah, no way Adrian and Gordon would function without at least some sleep, given what they went through at Black Mesa. I just want to know what happened with the HEV suit. G-Man said Gordon earned the suit, but in HL2 he's not only without the suit, but in full citizen fatigues despite him not having any feasible way to be in those fatigues in the first palce. And G-Man seems to have woken Gordon up just before the train ride, so I doubt it was Gordon himself who gave the suit up and dressed up in fatigues he has no idea where they're from.
@@darkySp I thought the reason he was wearing the citizen clothes rather than the HEV suit was so that he didn't immediately alert every combine in city 17 of his presence (even if he kind of did anyway)
1:50:40 Paper physics, I believe, is a reference to the cut Valve game Counter Strike Condition Zero Deleted Scenes. In the level Building Recon, the SAS leader can be seen folding a paper map with full physic properties to the back of a showcase board, whereas such physics interactions should not be possible in Goldsrc games, as this is likely created as a scripted event (Reference to the scene: th-cam.com/video/pXzsMirY1es/w-d-xo.html , credit to J - GAMES).
1:02:16 It could also be the Sterilizer - the tiny spray can that you could pick up to sterilize the wounds 1:09:24 Eli DID mentioned that Gordon didn't actually changed at all, he even asks "How do you do that?" or something
The teleporter in Nova Prospekt was built based off Eli's an Kilener's research, hence why it looks similar. It's also seems incomplete an doesn't seem to have been made with the Xen relay in mind, which is what the resistance teleporters use. When Mossman an Eli teleport out it seems to damage the teleporter an when Alyx an Freeman do the same it causes it to explode, destroying Nova Prospekt in the process an the effects likely being felt as far as City 17, if not further.
1:29:29 However, after the 25th anniversary update, the texture of Gaben got removed and replaced instead with a purple lambda (purple version of the Goldsrc trigger texture)
Love the video but holy shit the background clip starting at 29:16 was so funny. The amount of effort put in to dealing with that one metro cop had me dying.
According to the half-life 25th anniversary docu, chumtoads are originally an enemy bait so you can divert the enemy's attention then later reworked as a snark(or snark grenade)
58:50 Seeing as the HD pistol was modeled after a Beretta 92, it does make sense for it to shoot 9mm. It's the SMG replacement that the HD pack messes up, as it swaps the MP5 (which also fires 9mm in real life) for a M16 rifle which fires a rifle caliber (5.56mm). So it would no longer make sense for the two weapons to share from the same ammo pool as they do in-game. It's a very blatant but ultimately inconsequential mistake. Great video by the way. 😄
ackshually, it's a colt model 727 which can use 9mm (mag is wrong tho, like u said, in game, it uses the 5.56mm mag. also i'm not a firearms expert lel)
@waltuhbennet I have no idea what you're on about, a quick search reveals the 727 is an M4 model but never chambered for 9mm. You are correct there are 9mm ARs, notably the one developed for the Department of Energy for defending nuclear power plants, but 727 is not a number used for them. Also I'm a gun nerd.
@@christopherm4739 ah, srry, but i do remember that there was something like the m16/whatever it is gearbox used for the hd models that used 9mm. also i just found the colt thingy from the hl wiki, i'm gonna see if i can find it :P edit: I guess i misread, because the combine overwiki says: "In the Half-Life High Definition Pack, the Submachine Gun was replaced with an M4 carbine, similar to the model originally used during the development of Half-Life. This creates an inconsistency, as it still shares its ammunition supply with the pistol, despite the magazine and the casings both correctly depicting the weapon as firing 5.56x45mm NATO rounds instead of 9x19mm Parabellum. The M4's appearance bears similarities to the Colt Model 727 carbine."- Combine OverWiki So technically, it resembled it :P
Fun Fact: Junction Point Studios and Warren Spector were supposed to work on Half-Life 3/Half-Life 2: Episode 3 until Disney Interactive had them work on the Epic Mickey games instead. So it’s interesting to think that Warren Spector’s ideas for the next Half-Life may have been carried over to the Epic Mickey games. Maybe someday we’ll see Half-Life 3, Epic Mickey 3, and/or even System Shock 3 all come to fruition after years and years of waiting.
It was actually episode 4 not 3, an early prototype for a ravenholm expansion which would be cancelled and passed along to arkane where they worked on their version
No. They were working on an 'Episode 4' prequel game featuring Ravenholm before it became a zombie town. It would have seen the protagonist fall from a gondola in the sky to Ravenholm, meet characters Mueller and Scooter/Duncan and later Father Grigori. You'd also acquire a 'magnet gun'. Valve didn't like where this was going so they canned it and got Arkane to develop 'Episode 4' instead. They created Return To Ravenholm, a game set between Half-Life 2 and Episode 2 featuring Father Grigori, Adrian Shephard and some cool electricity mechanics.
Maybe a bit random but for the Sprite thing at 1:26:34 , I remember playing very early Counter-Strike betas, and in one patch or version, when players were dead and free roaming (rather than choosing to follow the POV of a single still-alive player), they would be the same glowing sprites moving around the map. You could see other sprites when dead, and this might be wrong, but I think even living players could see the sprites. This might sound crazy since the sprites would just hover around still living players, but this did happen and the feature was removed. Maybe I'm misremembering that last part, but anyway they were in CS at some point, I swear!
The multiverse probably is canon given the fact that Aperture found it as the plot of the Perpetual Testing Initiative (The Custom chambers of Portal 2) Interestingly enough there is a universe where Cave Johnson buys Black Mesa renaming it to Blapurture Mesa and prevents the Resonance Cascade by shutting down the Anomalous Materials Division.
One missing thing, another thing that proves the opposite that aperture science got raided by combine, but its a weird one, in the boss fight of Portal 1 Glados says "Are you trying to escape? [chuckle] Things have changed since the last time you left the building. What's going on out there will make you wish you were back in here. I have an infinite capacity for knowledge, and even I'm not sure what's going on outside. All I know is I'm the only thing standing between us and them. Well, I was." this can be reffering about Glados and that she dosent know how earth is doing outside and that also some presumable relations with the combine as their turrets acts the same as the turrets in Portal.
A thing about the combine's local teleport is it took Alex and Gordon a week to arive at Kliener's lab when they used it. Given that Nova prospect was no more two days away from Kliener's lab its clear that the combines local teleport is SUPER inefficent, who knows how long it would take them to say teleport across the Atlantic.
You can hear the Citadel's alarm blaring shortly after Eli is teleported to the Citadel, which I believe is meant to imply where Judith took him to. Which would mean that teleportation sequence was almost instant. However, I think Gordon/Alyx's teleportation taking a week was a combination of factors. What the Nova Prospekt teleporter seemed to lack was stability. Even when the teleporter was just charging up shortly after Eli's teleportation, it was giving off readings that "scared" Alyx. Once the two of them jump in the teleporter's platform, the room starts falling apart. To add extra injury, an Overwatch Elite blasts an energy ball at the platform. The damage and inability to perform to consecutive teleports within a short span of time is probably what made the sequence take a week. Which still makes their attempt at local teleportation SUPER inefficient, just in a different way. If you have to wait a certain amount of time and/or repair the teleporter everytime you use it, that's a pretty crappy teleporter compared to what some human geniuses are managing to do in the HL universe.
1:43:54 This is likely a reference to grayfruits Half-Life “Speedrun” where he comments in the refrigeration room in office complex when talking about the image sources being in Washington and that some of the boxes that he thought were “90% sure was in the Costco of grace washington?”
1:33:38 all the yellow pipes in the citadel have veins on them, and the overwatch voice seems to get “confused”/“sick” when the citadel is falling apart in episode 1. I wish valve would make another game where we go inside the citadel so they can show us new and even more gross ways that it’s alive, kind of like how in HLA they revealed that there’s a weird meat creature within every combine computer. 1:50:40 the newspapers in HLA have physics, they’re similar to the mattress physics in hl2 1:52:18 lost coast is real to me :(. Fisherman will forever be in my heart 2:08:57 in half life alpha the grunt model has four camo variants, two grey ones, one desert camo, and green camo. 2:11:50 I’ve heard there is cut dialogue from hl2 where breen mentions the “aleph universe”, though I can’t find any evidence of it.
1:09:20 We do know that you don't age, and if you do, it is probably far slower than usual. We know that Gordon was 27 at the time of HL1, and it was around 20 years until HL2 meaning Gordon would be 47, but Eli mentions that Gordon doesn't look like he aged at all. And I feel that you most likely aren't conscience, G-man and his employers most likely would put you in a sleep like state so that you won't go insane being in an endless void flying through space and "time"
21:18 that easter egg can actually be triggered in most of the base game lock electronic doors, not only that door...it is just the most famous door about it thanks to YT. The same easter egg exists in Black Mesa as well, and it is also triggerable in most locked electronic doors.
One thing to mention about bots in TF2, I believe they can have names relating to portal and apeture science, and because they exist in the same universe it means that TF2 can be taken as canon. Although I believe that TF2 is a fictionalized version of the Gravel war.
Some of the mods that were apart of the background gameplay footage: -Entropy Zero 2 -Half-Life 1 MMOD -Half-Life 2 MMOD -Rebel Surge -Cosmonaut -Mission Improbable -Transmissions: Element 120 -Sebastin -Forest Train -Silent Escape -Resourceful Protagonist
How do start off the iceberg saying "we really don't know a whole lot about him?" Did you even play the first game? He's 27 years of age, MIT graduate, and yes Theoretical Physicist.
Ok, we know his age, what he does, and what he studied, that's literally it We do really know nothing about Gordon Freeman. "Did YOU even play the other games?
he also wears glasses, a crucial mistake the author did. as a matter of fact, him wearing glasses is a major plot point in half-life 1 beta where he got his vision impaired from watching too much gay porn on the lab computer, which is why he wears glasses. do your research idiot
I’d like to add to the ice berg with a simple fact. In all Half-Life games, including Alyx, shotguns have the ability to fire two shots at the same time. Although in the 1st and 2nd game including episodes and DLC the shotgun used, SPAS 12, does not have two barrels making it impossible to fire two shots at the same time.
49:26 I unintentionally got this glitch when I was playing through Half Life to show my mom the story for the first time. A barrel rolled right in front of Eli as he went to swing the pipe at the advisor, it ruined the entire dramatic death scene and I had to reload LOL
1:27:16 I managed to bug out these vorts several times, breaking their despawn mechanic. It's simple, block them with the carriage or by yourself so one of them doesn't get to despawn. In 'Unforseen Consequences' they turn hostile and attack you.
5:20 I have a theory about the title "Hidden Cameras in Nova Prospekt." It could be because when you examine the security cameras in Nova Prospekt and visit the specific spot where a camera should be, you won't find one there.
1:09:32 Singing Vort also references this, saying something like "far distant eyes look out through yours" and "something secret steers us both, we shall not name it." 2:12:16 This trend began with "every copy of Mario 64 is personalized." The M64 iceberg can also be seen as the Kickstart for the iceberg trend. As such it is customary to added "EVERY COPY OF ____ IS PERSONALIZED" into an iceberg. Fantastic video! So much cool stuff I didn't know!
America being crossed out is probably because Ground Zero of the Zenian infestation started there and as such is probably the least habitable part of the world with portal storms probably still raging on it
The "Paper Tech" is a reference to Counter-Strike Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes. Not Half-Life, but still a goldsrc game made by Valve. In one of the mission briefings, the game features some pretty impressive tech where your commander flips pieces of paper on an easel. I was surprised the engine was even capable of it. :)
Amazing video, tho i would like to point out: From what i remember the info about G-man being a evolved Advisor is what Epistle 3 presents to us a a plot point. The "Breen is a good guy" may refer to the assumption that Breen is truly acting for the future of mankind, it's what he tries to tell Eli at the end of HL2. He witnessed how massively superior the Combine are and how humanity are basically ants to them making it likely that they can just snuff us out and take Earth's resources, but Breen is trying to convince the Combine that humans can offer more use in the future so he pleads for their benefactors to keep them going until their resolve can be achieved. "the Citadel is alive" if im not mistaken was a plot point in HL2 beta where the Cidatel was part organic and had blood oozing from it's walls alongside weird organ like architecture
6:39 made me so happy for some reason EDIT(s): 30:26: Half-Life Source labeled as H.E.V. Suit 36:55 This is not entirely true, as there are models of a HEV charger and a physics gun in Portal 2: Lab Rat, although this is probably an easter egg. Who stole it from who (if it's even canon) is left ambiguous, though. 42:02 Video freezes on it's own 2:12:19 This is likely based off the more well-known 'Every Copy of Super Mario 64 is personalized' thing that went on a few years ago, which also is not real. 21:13:33 Finally, a use for all those random useless classification names of super-universes (multiverses being the first order)
1:32:04 Im actually being taught by Harry in a character art course, his daughter's name along with a photo was in it apparently as an inside reference for himself, but someone went through the assets and put her photo in Gordons locker.
The "G-Man Nihilanth" theory was not about him being THE Nihilanth, rather about him being of the same race and just in disguise. At least according to the theory popularized by "The Game Theorists". Besides that, great vid!
1:22:49 isnt the case, breen makes it clear that gordons arrival was coincidental and that the overwatch could have raided black mesa east for some years by half life 2.
I do love your videos!! Although I believe that aperture didn’t purposefully send the borealis away from the combine. I’m pretty sure it was an accident and ended up there by mistake!
Something I wanna add that, I don't know if anyone else has added, but theres an item in Team Fortress 2 called the ap-sapper i think. It was sold to the mercenaries from GLaDOS in the description of the weapon, which implies TF2 and portal are in the same universe, which also implies that TF2 is in the same universe as Half Life. I dont really think that is the case considering how wacky TF2 is and how serious the others are, but i think it'd be a little funny if they were all really in the same universe. It is also said that the bio's of weapons and cosmetics are non-canon.(?) Team Fortress classic, however, was very similar to half life (no wonder.) and classic has a much higher probability of actually being in the half life universe due to its style. But thanks to the TF2 comics, its revealed that TFClassic mercenaries are from the same cartoony universe as Team Fortress 2! Despite the clear style difference between the two. 😊I'm a big TF2, Half life, and portal guy so i just wanted to share what i know!
Correction for the correction in the description: Х in Cyrillic alphabet does in fact function like the English H. But it's not a russian equivalent for G. We do have a G sound in russian and the letter for it is Г.
2:05:16 i think this entry is regarding to the fact that in 1980s large hadron collider was completed and some scientists theorized that if some stuff went wrong particle collider would give birth to a small blackhole of course this didnt happen
@@buak809 Technically something with diameter of 1 nanometer would not be a black hole since black holes have no volume and therefore no diameter. But if you are talking about a black hole with schwarzchild radius of 1 nanometer it would have mass of just 67 kilograms or so. And because of its small size it would interact with just a limited amount of atoms. So it would only be a threat for nearby bacteria. Of course it would grow overtime but it would take millions if not billions of years before it reaches a noticable size.
@@buak809 Another thing to add is particle collisions hundreds of times faster than LHC already happen in the world's upper atmosphere all the time due to cosmic rays from space. But obviously no black hole was detected.
@@Phapchamp that's a chad response, thanks, i was thinking that even that small black hole will grow faster and faster, exponentially as it will consume more particles and atoms at the same time rate due to it's expanding
@@buak809 Black hole that small -if it existed- would grow extremelly slowly. Even supermassive black holes like one in the center of the milky way eat up a star every 1000 year or so. Bigger the black hole more matter it attracts. We wouldn't even notice its existence.
1:09:49 this voice line isn't exclusive for the passing, it will play randomly whenever Louis picks a crowbar in any campaign. And adding a bit to it, the L4D 1 & 2 cast (mostly Louis and Ellis) will also make random references to valve games like TF2 and CS.
another correction, you said "one of the texture artists" but im pretty sure karen laur was the only texture artist on halflife. i think its mentioned in the documentary.
52:14 everyone should know where Gordon's ponytail went. He cut it off before half life 1 begins. The security guard asks about where it went and how cool it was when the game first starts.
I like that city 17 is in Bulgaria. Since I'm Bulgarian Its pretty nice to see it be referenced. But since I never lived in Bulgaria (I'm just from Bulgarian parents) and I only go to see grandparents and some friends every time I see an apartment building or something I always think "oh cool it's the building from HL2" instead of the other way around.
something that never gets mentioned is the newspaper on mvm_coaltown (iirc) saying "Local entrepreneur buys salt mine" which is referring to cave johnson, who built the old aperture science labs down there, as you can see when you drop down the elevator shaft. this means that they are all the same universe, just that tf2 happened a lot earlier (~60s-70s) than half life 1(~2000s) and aperture science was locked off by GLADoS anyway, which means nothing got in and nothing got out, making it virtually irrelevant to the story of half life.
the pistol you mention not making sense in using the 9mm cartridge was made around it lol. the 9mm Beretta M9, originally named the Beretta 92, was made by Italian Weapons Manufacturer Beretta, and was a pistol specifically made to replace the Colt M1911 using the .45 ACP Cartridge, and was later replaced once more by the Sig Sauer P320, now named the M17 and M18 respectfully, with the M17 being the American Designated Military Issue version of the P320, whereas the M18 is the more compact version of it featuring a shorter barrel and slide for ease of use in cramped areas with speed and precission. yes, an unnecessarily long comment about that tiny of a blunder in a massive video, but i find it interesting nontheless, and feel it deserves to be mentioned as it is an interesting bit of real world lore.
Wonderful iceberg! Though at 26:15, CS2 is not an exception! Much like CS 1.6 using lots of HL1 assets and CS Source using HL2 assets, plenty of map assets used throughout Counter Strike 2 come directly from Half Life Alyx! Even 20 years on, the Counter Strike franchise is using Half Life for textures and models
HL2 was truly ahead of its time in every aspect, but that "distorted trumpet" audio is something straight out of an analog horror genre, which got popular just a couple of years ago. It's just mindboggling how this game shaped our pop culture and gaming industry as a whole. I refuse to imagine how many awesome games we wouldn't have if it wasn't for HL2. Gabe is simply a godsent.

heya! the jaytest gun is listed as "Temp heavy machine gun" in the .qcx file. also the .smd files being named Police_MP5_45fov/Police_MP5_90fov also hint at the gun being a placeholder asset.
1:47:05 I finished Alyx today, and while trying to find out if theres a different ending I tried not grabbing the briefcase, but he still teleported me, so I think youre canonically correct
2:12:16 im pretty sured the "Every copy of (Insert game) is personalized" originated from some super mario 64 icebergs saying that every copy of super mario 64 is personalized
2:12:32 I have an early build of gmod 2 / S&box and on the game is a port of half-life 1 to the game (S&box runs on source 2) so half-life source 2 already exists. Its cool seeing all the 1998 models being tracked by real time lighting. There were or two bugs here and there but overall it was flawless.
louis doesnt say "i feel like gordon freeman" in the passing as you dont play as the originally survivors in the passing campaign. The dialogue triggers in any campaign that includes the original survivors and Louis picks up a crowbar
1:43:49 I believe Grace, Washington is where valve sourced some textures for Half Life 1, inside a Costco or Walmart. Textures like food crates in the Office Complex freezer came from Grace, Washington. Fun fact, the canyon textures for surface tension are sourced from Washington.
@@1luciaI don’t hate it, don’t get me wrong the story is amazing and both games made the gaming community rise to glory, but I don’t like “sci-fi/futuristic horror games”. but watching your videos just makes me happy to see people actually put time into their videos.
I'm pretty sure the whole "Every Copy of Half-Life is personalized" originates from the meme of "Every Copy of Super Mario 64 is personalized," which I think came from a popular SM64 iceberg that helped to popularize the iceberg image format.
Fun fact: I translated the HL:A number station! some of it I couldn't get translated but the parts I could translate was a communications alert, to someone, or a group of people of the citadel being destroyed, pretty weird cause the citadel doesn't blow up until half life 2, years later.
In regards to the return to ravenholm or “Episode: 4” as you put it. I contacted Noclip a while ago after they visited Arkansas and got to play the build of it that exists today. They said that the character being Adrian Shepard was not a confirmed thing and that was mostly a theory dreamt up by TH-camrs misinterpreting one of the Arkansas devs saying they liked how Gearbox made their own character for their expansions and they wanted to do something similar. Arkansas had not decided on a protagonist for their spin-off before it was cancelled.
36:55 I think this is referring to cave talking about black mesa stealing stuff from aperture, and also the gravity gun schematics beimg visible in lab rat
i think one of the most interesting theories is how in an alternate timeline, cave johnson bought black mesa and cancelled the plans which lead gordon and the team to cause a resonance cascade. this is supported by one of the voicelines found in portal 2’s perpetual testing initiative to stop this from happening again, g man went back in time and made the astronauts hired by aperture disappear, leading apeture to spend all of its money buying moon dust so it cant buy out black mesa. the lack of money also caused cave johnson to also have to experiment on the moon dust himself, causing him to die as well making sure he cant mess with any more plans (maybe even saving humanity by not being able to further improve portal technology?)
about the couple in 11:52. i never saw any connection. the way i grew up with games was always "theres limited space so reuse assets as much as possible"

Slight correction, Axel himself didn't release the beta leak, he shared the files with one of his friends and they were the one to release it to the public, and he's shown regret over what he did which is also what led to him only getting 3 years of probation

did the guy who actually leaked it get a heavier sentence? or any?

In the first Portal, GLaDOS mentioned that she's preventing "them" from entering the facility. Also, the facility was locked down ever since she killed of all the personnel, snd I doubt she would open it again so she could be disturbed. And even if they managed to get inside, it's not like the portal gun is laying there on every shelf. Given that they even know that they are supposed to be looking for it, or at least for the technology.
also, since GLaDOS can change up chambers, it’s likely she’ll lead them on a goose chase by constantly restructuring the entire facility to make sure they would never reach the portal gun
well, there might be some combine scouts being sent into the ruins of aperture after the ending of portal 1
You'd also think *some* form of government or corporate oversight would be trying to regain control over the facility, but there's no one to even bother cleaning up the whole mess. I think that's the most telling implication there's no one left alive on the outside.
@@clard They would probably just destroy the walls
In 'Grace, Washington', there is a Costco.
Some of the textures used by valve are sourced from that Costco.
If you're saying that's how Gordy gets it in HL2, it's not - Alex didn't meet Gman yet in the half life 2 timeline.
@@ninjaguyYTisn't half life alyx 5 years before hl2?
@@itsmanos_yes but the events of Alyx couldn't have happened before HL2 in the original timeline because Eli dies. If the events of Alyx happen, then Eli is saved by past Alyx. Time fuckery basically, doesn't make much sense to me either but I'm sure we'll get a better idea of it when/if we get more games. It's also explicitly cannon that this is a multiverse, so I guess that could explain it but I personally hate that explanation
Great Iceberg! This might be one of the best I’ve seen yet!
A Few Corrections and Additional Information:
- Distorted Trumpets is only a sample used in the song, which I believe is just called “Radio” in the OST. The other sample used is called “Is That The Door?”
- “You’re not supposed to be here, as a matter of fact, you’re not,” is the full version of the quote, and it was also used in the Hazard01 test level as well as an E3 trailer called “Psych”
- I think the theory that Blue Shift is non-canon stems from the special HEV charges they use in the game, that are styled differently then the one that appears in Eli’s Junkyard
- The “Missing Songs” entry is likely referring to several songs that come with the Half-Life 2 OST, but are never feature in game, including Headhumper, Biozeminades Fragment, and Combine Harvester to name a few.
- The quote that makes people think Vortiguants are self-aware is also another thing the singing Vortiguant says, “far distant eyes watch out through yours.”
- Real Time Moss, Alien Breeding, and Timeline were all ambitious features suggested by Gabe Newell, and whether or not the Valve team took them seriously is debatable.
This video is a good explanation, it’s a really interesting idea, th-cam.com/video/npXqBBvRvko/w-d-xo.html
- The Blue Zombie is an older zombie model only seen in screenshots and is linked to a scientist model that has likely never been seen before. This explains it: vcc.wiki/wiki/Scientist_(Evolution)#Version_4:_Concept_Art
- Slickface Barney is only rumored to resemble slick, but there has never been any proof they are the same model.
- G-man’s crow is named “Crowley” in the Hammer Editor
- The Early Robo Grunt Model has sort of an interesting story, there is more about it here: vcc.wiki/wiki/Early_censored_Models
Thank you very much for this very detailed comment! :D
A addendum to first information, the Radio also uses "Ooyayoolyah" in the background of "Distorted Trumpets" - all of the samples in Radio are from the sample library called as "Cuckooland - Ghost tn the Machine" by Zero-G.
REAL TIME MOSS IS CANNON AND WILL BE IN HL3, MARK MY WORD.
what if real time moss is the reason why half life 3 is still not released
another possible addition is breen being good. it coul be a reference to the theory that breed was being comically evil on purpose to give humanity a single figure to hate, rather than the all powerful "combine", and when he was defeated, to give hope.
Btw, huge respect for covering the entire iceberg
it's quite possible since the Synths are living organisms with metallic parts.

@@paradoxicaloutcome1007 Might be the copious amounts of morphine from the suit

1:50:40 Paper physics, I believe, is a reference to the cut Valve game Counter Strike Condition Zero Deleted Scenes. In the level Building Recon, the SAS leader can be seen folding a paper map with full physic properties to the back of a showcase board, whereas such physics interactions should not be possible in Goldsrc games, as this is likely created as a scripted event (Reference to the scene: th-cam.com/video/pXzsMirY1es/w-d-xo.html , credit to J - GAMES).

1:29:29
However, after the 25th anniversary update, the texture of Gaben got removed and replaced instead with a purple lambda (purple version of the Goldsrc trigger texture)
The Hi-poly model mentioned at 1:19:42 appears to be a fairly accurate recreation of a mecha called a Regult from the anime Macross.
It does actually look similar, so I think it definitely was based on Regult.
Love the video but holy shit the background clip starting at 29:16 was so funny. The amount of effort put in to dealing with that one metro cop had me dying.
It is painful to watch
Imagine the rewards he would get if he actually killed Freeman.
@@christopherm4739 ah, srry, but i do remember that there was something like the m16/whatever it is gearbox used for the hd models that used 9mm. also i just found the colt thingy from the hl wiki, i'm gonna see if i can find it :P
edit: I guess i misread, because the combine overwiki says:
"In the Half-Life High Definition Pack, the Submachine Gun was replaced with an M4 carbine, similar to the model originally used during the development of Half-Life. This creates an inconsistency, as it still shares its ammunition supply with the pistol, despite the magazine and the casings both correctly depicting the weapon as firing 5.56x45mm NATO rounds instead of 9x19mm Parabellum. The M4's appearance bears similarities to the Colt Model 727 carbine."- Combine OverWiki
So technically, it resembled it :P

1:04:23 The baby is Harry E. Teasley's daughter Isabel, and the picture was officially explained as being an Easter egg placed by the level designer.
Multiverse trop is so shitty. I hate multiverse they're cheap and made to pander to all fans at the same time
One missing thing, another thing that proves the opposite that aperture science got raided by combine, but its a weird one, in the boss fight of Portal 1 Glados says "Are you trying to escape?
I think the week delay was due to the teleporter being destroyed in that same moment

1:50:40 the newspapers in HLA have physics, they’re similar to the mattress physics in hl2
1:52:18 lost coast is real to me :(. Fisherman will forever be in my heart
2:08:57 in half life alpha the grunt model has four camo variants, two grey ones, one desert camo, and green camo.
I love long form content but this is ridiculous! Serious props for making this, legendary video as always
One thing to mention about bots in TF2, I believe they can have names relating to portal and apeture science, and because they exist in the same universe it means that TF2 can be taken as canon. Although I believe that TF2 is a fictionalized version of the Gravel war.

How do start off the iceberg saying "we really don't know a whole lot about him?" Did you even play the first game? He's 27 years of age, MIT graduate, and yes Theoretical Physicist.
that ain't a whole lot
Ok, we know his age, what he does, and what he studied, that's literally it
We do really know nothing about Gordon Freeman. "Did YOU even play the other games?
I think y’all aren’t getting the joke
he also wears glasses, a crucial mistake the author did. as a matter of fact, him wearing glasses is a major plot point in half-life 1 beta where he got his vision impaired from watching too much gay porn on the lab computer, which is why he wears glasses.
do your research idiot
But that's really only the most basic info. It ain't nothing, but it's hardly something.
1:09:32
Singing Vort also references this, saying something like "far distant eyes look out through yours" and "something secret steers us both, we shall not name it."
2:12:16 This trend began with "every copy of Mario 64 is personalized." The M64 iceberg can also be seen as the Kickstart for the iceberg trend.

Just a bunch of vertices attached to skeletal, nothing unusual.
@57:09 I think the "Tentacle" part refers to the cut Half-Life 2 tentacles seen in the old E3 presentations
1:09:22 its strongly implied that you dont age since Gordon's appearance hasn't changed "one iota" according to eli
Amazing video, tho i would like to point out:
From what i remember the info about G-man being a evolved Advisor is what Epistle 3 presents to us a a plot point.
6:39 made me so happy for some reason

36:55 This is not entirely true, as there are models of a HEV charger and a physics gun in Portal 2: Lab Rat, although this is probably an easter egg. Who stole it from who (if it's even canon) is left ambiguous, though.
42:02 Video freezes on it's own
2:12:19 This is likely based off the more well-known 'Every Copy of Super Mario 64 is personalized' thing that went on a few years ago, which also is not real.
That also explains the baby photo mystery, its his daughter
That’s pretty wild. What’s he like as a teacher?
@@anhonkandae he's fun, I learn a lot from him. He mostly dose classes through zoom, he stays home taking care of his daughter. He's a good father :)
58:50 nah thats a beretta my brother in Christ. It usually takes 9 mm
1:43:56 this slightly reminds me of the end scene of portal after you destroy glados where chell gets draged back into the facility.
The "G-Man Nihilanth" theory was not about him being THE Nihilanth, rather about him being of the same race and just in disguise. At least according to the theory popularized by "The Game Theorists". Besides that, great vid!
1:22:49 isnt the case, breen makes it clear that gordons arrival was coincidental and that the overwatch could have raided black mesa east for some years by half life 2.
who up bulling they squid?
breenin ma grub
The biggest thing game changer for the next half life game is the fact that it’s the first time we’ve ever got an official third game
I literally discovered your channel and you post this, good job sir
I do love your videos!! Although I believe that aperture didn’t purposefully send the borealis away from the combine. I’m pretty sure it was an accident and ended up there by mistake!
This is well done.
Even a superfan like me learned a few things. Editing and pacing is great too.
52:16 he cut it off before going to work on the day of the incident
awesome video, i was surprised there wasnt included "alyx krystal replacement mod" for half life 2, i think it would fit good in iceberg
Would the blackhole of a diameter of 1 nanometer present on earth eventually suck the whole earth inside?
Regarding the Citadel being alive, I like to think this is true, since we can see what almost looks like veins on our ride up to Dr. Breen's office
Crazy (and weirdly fun) to think of your ancestors' birthplace as a whole big-ass HL2 theme park lol.
something that never gets mentioned is the newspaper on mvm_coaltown (iirc) saying "Local entrepreneur buys salt mine" which is referring to cave johnson, who built the old aperture science labs down there, as you can see when you drop down the elevator shaft.
this means that they are all the same universe, just that tf2 happened a lot earlier (~60s-70s) than half life 1(~2000s)
and aperture science was locked off by GLADoS anyway, which means nothing got in and nothing got out, making it virtually irrelevant to the story of half life.
I really really appreciate the effort that it takes to have hardcoded subtitles in your videos, this was amazing! Keep up the great work
the pistol you mention not making sense in using the 9mm cartridge was made around it lol.
the 9mm Beretta M9, originally named the Beretta 92, was made by Italian Weapons Manufacturer Beretta, and was a pistol specifically made to replace the Colt M1911 using the .45 ACP Cartridge, and was later replaced once more by the Sig Sauer P320, now named the M17 and M18 respectfully, with the M17 being the American Designated Military Issue version of the P320, whereas the M18 is the more compact version of it featuring a shorter barrel and slide for ease of use in cramped areas with speed and precission.
yes, an unnecessarily long comment about that tiny of a blunder in a massive video, but i find it interesting nontheless, and feel it deserves to be mentioned as it is an interesting bit of real world lore.
HALF LIFE ALYX SPOILER
-
It starts with one thing
I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
All I know
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away
It's so unreal
Didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on, didn't even know
I wasted it all just to watch you go
I kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me
Will eventually be a memory of a time when
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
One thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how
I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I'm surprised it got so
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me in the end
You kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There's only one thing you should know
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There's only one thing you should know
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
Insane.
50:16 Damn I thought I knew every thing there was to know about this game series. That’s insane.
heya! the jaytest gun is listed as "Temp heavy machine gun" in the .qcx file.
also the .smd files being named Police_MP5_45fov/Police_MP5_90fov also hint at the gun being a placeholder asset.
1:47:05 I finished Alyx today, and while trying to find out if theres a different ending I tried not grabbing the briefcase, but he still teleported me, so I think youre canonically correct
7:24 say that again..
2:12:16 im pretty sured the "Every copy of (Insert game) is personalized" originated from some super mario 64 icebergs saying that every copy of super mario 64 is personalized
36:53 the ratman comic indicates aperture stole from black mesa
2:12:32 I have an early build of gmod 2 / S&box and on the game is a port of half-life 1 to the game (S&box runs on source 2) so half-life source 2 already exists. Its cool seeing all the 1998 models being tracked by real time lighting. There were or two bugs here and there but overall it was flawless.
So... is no one gonna talk about 1:32:45?
louis doesnt say "i feel like gordon freeman" in the passing as you dont play as the originally survivors in the passing campaign. The dialogue triggers in any campaign that includes the original survivors and Louis picks up a crowbar
You cooked up probably the best half life iceberg video out there.
56:04 Barney is so happy to meet the soldiers that he waved them, this caused him to die.
I was waiting for part 2 of the purple Cornell iceberg but I got something even better
His series is awesome as well! :D His iceberg has many points different from mine as well! :P
19:06 you can also find this song in the Anti-Citizen One chapter if I'm correct and it's playing on a TV with G-man on it
This vid is kinda mid, like there's no sub way surbers
Shit I forgot to add it
Can’t forgot the family guy clips either
And the cake and soap cutting clips
1:43:49 I believe Grace, Washington is where valve sourced some textures for Half Life 1, inside a Costco or Walmart. Textures like food crates in the Office Complex freezer came from Grace, Washington.
Fun fact, the canyon textures for surface tension are sourced from Washington.
I never played half life, but this video got kissed by god himself.
You should stick around and maybe check half life out! You won’t regret it! :D
1:41:00 The whole XCCR thing is an error. The sign actually says "ХССГ" in Bulgarian. (Transliterates to "KhSSG")
HLA Spoiler: Alyx is the main character🤯
This video weirdly leaves out a lot of details, it feels like it was written by an AI
Right 😂
i think it was just to save time
@@strangemilk8149 on the FULL Half-Life iceberg? Hell no, if it says full then it should be complete to the best of the youtuber's ability
i think one of the most interesting theories is how in an alternate timeline, cave johnson bought black mesa and cancelled the plans which lead gordon and the team to cause a resonance cascade. this is supported by one of the voicelines found in portal 2’s perpetual testing initiative
to stop this from happening again, g man went back in time and made the astronauts hired by aperture disappear, leading apeture to spend all of its money buying moon dust so it cant buy out black mesa. the lack of money also caused cave johnson to also have to experiment on the moon dust himself, causing him to die as well making sure he cant mess with any more plans (maybe even saving humanity by not being able to further improve portal technology?)
where skibidi?
1:09:33 Not sure if anyone else commented this, but the hidden vortigaunt in HL2 speaks on this as well.
Anyone else struggled lowkey to understand this shit
there are literally subtitles, are you slow
about the couple in 11:52. i never saw any connection. the way i grew up with games was always "theres limited space so reuse assets as much as possible"
