Welcome back to the channel! Today we're checking out Void War, an FTL inspired spaceship management RTS roguelike! Let me know what you think in the comments, and if you'd like to see more!
I love to see it. It's been over 10 years since FTL release, it's about time for a new game in the genre. One issue I would point out is the unreadable font. It adds to the vibe of the game, but it's also the first thing I would mod out of it.
Yeah, by default there's a sort of "edge smoothing" filter, which I think looks even worse, so I turned it off for the default look. I agree there could be a font that fits the aesthetic, but is a little less muddy.
I first saw a picture of this yesterday. Definitely thought it was a mod for FTL or perhaps an offshoot of some kind. Having said that, I definitely don't mind the undeniable similarity. There's room in the gaming space for more games like FTL, considering how there's only ever been the one so far (or two if you want to count Multiverse as a pseudo-sequel). Definitely getting this.
Agreed, a few changes to make it not quite as copy/paste for some elements, but a 10+ year old game is allowed to be used as inspiration to expand the genre. Liking a lot of the mechanical changes.
I'd definitely take this over another dozen battle royales or hero shooters lmao here's to hoping they add a lot of unique mechanics and systems that ftl never had; making a new ip gives them room to experiment, without it feeling like a modpack for a game that already exists
Yeah agreed. I think a few things could be changed to be more unique, but making a spiritual successor to a super old game is very different than just riding hype and releasing a clone within the same year.
Trigon: space story was also a thing, tried to iterate on the FTL idea, but it wasn't supported well and had some jank to it, it got an unbelievable amount of hate because it wasn't FTL, and an unbelievable amount of hate because it was similar. Gamers just like to hate I guess. This looks cool, I wish them success, we need more games like this. What if we had so many to choose from like we do MOBA's and Battle Royale games that there is always something new and fun to play? Wouldn't that be wild.
I just got it as well! Super fun. Idk if it “surpasses” FTL but it’s a great companion. What’s interesting to me is I saw the devs advertising it on various places, and in general indie spaces people are very dismissive saying “it’s just an FTL ripoff what are you doing pass” and in more FTL focused spaces people are saying “heck yea it’s an actually good FTL ripoff I can’t wait to play it”
@@joseph1981 agree 100%. I was stoked and it’s very quality. I can understand people being iffy on it being paid when it’s essentially an overhaul mod, but like you said it’s more than a decade later, and IMO it differentiates itself enough. And if anything I think the devs have to worry about games workshop coming for them than anyone that worked on FTL lmao. For a company that built itself on parody and inspiration from other sources their very quick to start a lawsuit
Wish I could get into the grimdark atmosphere, I think void war has cool takes on the mechanics from ftl especially being able to choose where you place systems and having missile systems separate from weapons
I paid to back the alpha and have played a few runs, here are my thoughts so far. I think most of my issues with the game are things that will be ironed out before the final release of the game. In terms of lore and the core gameplay loop, it's essentially an FTL Warhammer 40k mod. Pros: Interesting new crew mechanics and equipment/consumable item systems, hazards aren't as bad as they are in FTL, medbay is a purchasable subsystem that doesn't require power Cons: Normal and Torment 1 difficulties are significantly easier than FTL to the point where it takes most of the challenge out of the game and the overall difficulty progression across sectors is less smooth than it is in FTL. Most ships in the first two (out of 6) sectors can't hurt you if you upgrade Shields. The exclusion zone sectors are ridiculously difficult compared to the rest of the game, a sector 2 exclusion zone is harder than the final boss fight. Neutral: Enemy ships tend to have higher evasion than in FTL and repair damaged systems much more quickly than in FTL. It takes longer for rooms to vent and for vented rooms to refill with oxygen than in FTL. Crew don't have system skill levels that make them provide bonuses to the systems, there's only a bonus from having the systems manned.
There are 12 difficulty options though, so I suppose I just haven't gotten to the harder ones yet. Personally I would have preferred if the difficulty was comparable to FTL out of the box instead of having to win a few runs to unlock the higher difficulty modes, but I suppose it's not a big deal if the higher difficulty modes are around the same difficulty as FTL or higher.
It's very on the nose, but honestly considering how long it's been since ftl released, i have a pretty high tolerance for gameplay related yoinks. On full release, i would definitely like to see it lean even farther into the grimdark aesthetic, and maybe add in a couple more unique systems. Been too long since a game like ftl was released that lived up to it's predecessor, so at this point im fine with a carbon copy as long as it's good. Definitely gonna be adding this to my wishlist.
I’m kinda fine with a developer lifting mechanics from FTL, just bc FTL is so unique and I would love a sequel but don’t think we’ll ever get one Game looks interesting enough tho ill have to see how it plays myself
Yeah overall I’ve been enjoying it. It seems to come from a “we love ftl and wanna make a new version with content that improves what subset games started” There’s no other games “like” ftl really, so I like to see games try it.
@@spearmintz1 yeah I really enjoyed seeing the different stuff you can do with crew I genuinely feel that was the only thing missing from base FTL which is why I enjoyed multiverse so much just the different types of crew you could get
I feel that this game has a lot of visual clutter. Looks incredible, but there is just so much you can look at, and I don't feel the important stuff is given the proper attention, in this regard at least.
Overall I like the details and clutter, adds to the grimdark aesthetic, but I totally agree, it could be toned down/certain aspects like the system bars could be made more clear/larger.
It's interesting that they went back to the traditional "you can only move forward" map design (and apparently eliminated fuel as a resource). I'm sure they'll redo the Upgrade screen before release, it's a bit too blatant. Boarding seems extremely overpowered; you would have been better off crewkilling every fight. (might be that the demo crew is just too strong) I don't see any point in the "destroy the shields and return" strategy either, unless enemies know how to vent effectively or has some extremely strong but slow killbot to force a retreat. Another thing they lifted from STL is scrap as currency. Nothing wrong with that, but why not use imperial gold coins (because that seems more 40k-flavored) or some kind of rare mineral (like Star Trek's gold-pressed latinum) instead?
Yeah it seems they streamlined some things, no fuel and only one resource (missiles) which will become more apparent in later episodes. I actually think I like the change, it differentiates it from FTL, and the additional systems they add are very different from anything FTL has. I definitely realize just how OP boarding is later in the run, it's a very different approach to the overall combat, feels in-universe for a 40k style situation. And yeah, scrap definitely should have been renamed, seems like an easy change to make the game feel more unique.
Yeah there are a lot of good ideas and improvements, many don't show up till later in this run though. I think with changing a few UI and mechanics it can differentiate itself enough, at first glance it feels very similar!
I think it's too similar to be a stand alone, if they wanted to make this a mod I'd be all for it. Also the tutorial is way to long, I much prefer how FTL had next to no tutorial.
Damn literally thought this was a FTL mod haha
So does TH-cam apparently. The video is tagged under FTL :D

I love how it seems to be just familiar enough for FTL players to feel comfortable with it, while also having lots of cool features.

I feel that, I was hoping for a direct sequel by this point, but having this is also very good.
I'd definitely take this over another dozen battle royales or hero shooters lmao

love that they are leaning into your ships crew potential.
Looks cool. Have nothing against "repeating" ideas, if that interesting project is already 10 years old and not supported!
Yeah agreed. I think a few things could be changed to be more unique, but making a spiritual successor to a super old game is very different than just riding hype and releasing a clone within the same year.
Crying suns was a thing

Ftl came out in 2012. Ripoff or not, i need this genre injected directly into my veins, cause lord am i starving for more

Crying Suns is another extremely good FTL “Clone” that differentiates itself enough to be its own thing. Might be worth checking out.

I will be watching this series with great interest.
Keep playing! Seems very interesting
16:10 Multiverse also has this functionality for those who want to play the original FTL with it
i'm gonna like this one. FTL with a more gritty feelings.
Holly hell I need to play this, I love FTL I love 40k so this seems like a match made in heaven (the grimdark kind)
I hope Orcs can ram, I loved doing that in the old 40k space RTS game made 10 or so years ago.
Crying suns is longer has a great story and is also based on ftl

This game gave me cataracts.
Bro this is litterally just warhammer 40k
Man I had a friend who would've loved this 😞
Not a bad Alpha. I'll have to pick it up when it becomes available.
Right off the bat, I’m getting some Risk of Rain vibes
Not in gameplay of course, just aesthetics

"Consumables are consumable" hmm
Maybe it's closer to clone bay than med bay? That would explain a directly copied station idea at least.
Im guessing 18:26 when you forced them into combat was slowing them down dissabling engines. Cool little detail but could've been explained better.
It's interesting that they went back to the traditional "you can only move forward" map design (and apparently eliminated fuel as a resource).

29:00 uninstall the matrix and it should go into your cargo hold. Then you could sell it.
This may be leaning a bit too far into imitation to the point of just...copying FTL. Not sure if I like that.

@@spearmintz1 Right down to the low oxygen texture, the position of everything in the UI, and many other things.
YOOOO
Assumed rip off, if its good tho ill give it a go, there is some intresting divergences...
Keep watching future episodes, there are definitely more unique ideas that I discover!
Visually too much of a blatant rip off.
