    You are funny, you are so enthusiastic! Love it. Mine quit cooling this year think I'll pull it apart and see what I can find. I actually save money using it. I keep it in my bedroom and turn the central ac way up and the portable way down. It cut $10 off my bill every month. Not huge but I'll take anything I can get!

      Probably bad bearings. Either the bearings are going bad on the compressor, or the exhaust bad on the back. I would suggest to use it until it stops working. Repairing it or replacing the bearings will probably cost you more than buying a new unit. That is, if you can find someone who will work on these.

    Just replicated these same actions - worked to perfection!! Thank you so much for giving me the gusto to actually use a hose on an electrical fanned unit. I kept thinking "well, this is the same way we clean the central air unit. Should be golden?" let set for two days with a fan blowing indirectly on the unit. After tearing it all apart and finding the bottom coils were jammed in the middle with near zero access to clean, this is the 100% best solution. Thank you!!

    Love a man who fixes things! Great job! I have a 2016 unit that just gave me an error code FO (still have my manual and I keep it cleaned) no pets etc. FO code says refrigerant is leaking or system is blocked. So I’m not sure if I should take the backing off and look to see if there’s any blockages or if there’s a way to snake a pipe cleaner through?
    and if it is the Freon is it rechargeable? Thank you. Freon type is R-410A 18.3oz

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The shell is easy enough to get off. It could just have some carpet dust trapped inside and you may be able to clean it and get it back to work. If it's leaking I suggest you get a new one. Finding and fixing the leak may be very difficult on sealed units like this. You would need to know brazing to do it right. Also R-410 like R-12 is not an easy one to find. If it was R-134A that would be easy enough. You would spend more time and money on a mechanical fix than just buying a new one. Sad but true.

      I didn't have an exhaust hose when I made the video, but later I rigged up a dryer vent hose. Works just fine. All I did was use a few screws and screwed it directly into the case. It's completely hollow in that region around the exhaust so there is nothing to damage as long as you use small screws. Don't use 3" screw obviously. If you still have an open area that you need to close up you can use a round plastic like the lid from a can of Folgers coffee, that type of thing. Cheap and easy!

      The best thing to do is to take it apart. It's not that hard really. A few months after I made the video I found that mine started to not cool as well again, so I took it apart. The entire shell comes off and exposes the internals. I found a LOT of dog hair, and dust clumps (all from the previous owner) jammed at the bottom. It had no way to get out because there are no vents at the bottom so my washing it just pushed all the crap to the bottom. After a good vacuuming and another bath I let it dry, put it back together and it cools like a champ. Give it a try, it's not that hard to do. Just a few screws and it comes apart easily.

    • @ModernDIYProjects

      That can be many things but what comes to mind is that it is tripping an internal breaker. That is probably the sound you are hearing. Something is overloading or overheating and causing it to shut off.

    i found one of these that looks just like this but its a kenmore and is white but otherwise it looks identical. the fan works fine but i think the compressor might be screwed. i plugged it in and at first it was cold but then it tripped the circuit breaker. after trying a different room, it still runs but wont get cold. i dont feel any air coming out the back vent either. any suggestions? does it sound like a compressor issue? is it possible that the one outlet is connected to too many other outlets and cant handle an AC or is it just the ac not working correctly? is it fixable or should i throw it back to the trash? also i had no idea i could hose off an AC without ruining it. i have a few window ones that are 20 years old and still work believe it or not but are pretty dirty. can i do the same thing with those? just take them outside and blast them with a hose? sorry for so many questions lol.
    Ok quick update, i turned it on again and it was working but i also noticed that the exhaust fan in the back doesnt work and wont blow any air out. I w order if that caused it to over heat and trip the breaker. It looks so clean in there though. Any ways of how i can get the fan to work?

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine didn't work from any fan or cool either until I did the cleaning. You can clean off any appliance or electrical device without harming it as long as there is NO power going through it when you clean it. Then it must be allowed to be FULLY dry before powering it back up. I would try cleaning yours before you toss it out. A lot of crap will pour out when you clean it that you cant readily see. If it is blowing breakers it just means that it is sucking up too much power. WHY is it doing that? That is the million dollar question.

It worked twice after switching it to heat this past winter and then stopped heating although it’s still blowing air. Trying to run the ac now and it appears to only be the fan with no cold air. @@ModernDIYProjects I contacted them today and they said that they don’t make the parts for repair. They said that I have to buy another one and that they would reimburse me in 6 to 8 weeks. This seems like poor business practices to me as not everyone has an extra $700 laying around to take care of a warranty issue! I guess the good news is that they didn’t ask for the old one, so maybe I can find a repair shop that can fix it and have two

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is a bit inconvenient but I can see that happening. These days most products are made to be disposable so companies don't bother stocking parts for repair. This company most likely contracts out to have another company make the fan for them and slap their label on it. That is the way things are these days. I also think you will have a hard time finding a shop that will fix the old one for a reasonable price. Most likely once you get your refund then I would say it would be OK for you to tear it apart and have fun trying to figure out a fix for it. You can at least learn what went wrong on the off chance that it may happen again. Having a second one for spare parts can be useful. That is the way I learned much of what I know. Tearing apart broken things. After all you cant break something once it is already broken. 🙂

  • @Airman93
    @Airman93 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    When the unit is dirty the compressor will not turn on because the evaporator coil can’t transfer the heat it needs to change the state of the refrigerant if it can’t change the refrigerant could go into the compressor as a liquid slugging the compressor rendering it useless.theres a limit switch wired into these units to cut the power off to the compressor when this happens to protect it. I do not recommend hosing units like this off with a hose. There are transformers and electrical parts that can be damaged use a spray bottle and coil cleaner.

    I have a 12000 btu Penguino ac only unit that made an odd clicking noise and was losing it's cool. The owners manual tells you to clean the upper coil filter. That's the only service they list. However you have to clean the lower heat exchanger coil because it sucks in room air and gets filthy. As an electrician I recommend disassembling the case so you can access the lower coil. Mine had a bad case of black mold in the ac discharge. It's completely torn apart now and bleach water has removed all mold. This disassembly is not for the faint hearted but it is doable. All Delongi had to do was provide an access panel on the lower front side to clean off the coil and it would work forever. Engineered to fail IMHO.

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true. I recently opened mine up and found that the condenser (heat exchanger as you called it) was covered in so much dust, dirt and animal hair, (from the previous owner) it looked like it had a carpet on top of it. It's amazing it cooled at all. So I cleaned all that off with strong water and allowed it to dry up again sitting outside on a nice hot summer day. Mine only had 6 screws to take off the plastic shell making everything accessible after that. But the internal components are rather complex like you said, not for the faint of heart.

    I have a DeLonghi unit that stopped blowing cold air last year. It still blows air but I guess the compressor never kicks in anymore. The couple weeks leading up to that happening, it was making like a metal clicking noise sometimes when it was running and I also had to drain the condensation tank like crazy. That statement about it being junk is a generalization. There could be many things wrong with the compressor and some are worth fixing and some not. • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to tell you this but most appliances like this do not have recharge ports. AC units are like your refrigerator. They get charged up at the factory, then the connector is crimped and sealed off before the Freon is disconnected. So in essence there is no way to recharge it if is low or develops a leak. A technician would have to cut the Freon line and refill then crimp and seal again. I doubt you will find some tech that is willing to do that for less than the cost of a new unit. That is why most things are disposable these days. That is assuming that the Freon is low. Maybe it is just a blown fuse or the compressor is not kicking on. You can experiment with it and see if you find anything else that you may be able to fix yourself. As I always like to point out "You can't break what is already broken". So you have nothing to loose.

      @@ModernDIYProjects I’m sure your aware they sell A/C service port kits and some fairly simple to use tools to tap in just to charge or install a permanent service port yourself. Definitely a bit more advanced for the average person to take on but not too hard and definitely achievable for a mechanically inclined person ! Unfortunately to do it 100% by the book some of the equipment recommended and needed is not cheap. Possibly making a D.I.Y repair done to avoid repair bills or the cost of a new one pointless. But to be honest a diy repair that fixes it even partially still is better than what you started with ! Regardless of what fancy equipment or tools and done a bit rough you still succeeded doing what 95 percent of people didn’t even try 🎉 my point is I’m assuming you didn’t want to go into saying and explaining all of that considering how much is involved guess it’s not worth it

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jameshinton9274 Correct. I generally don't encourage folks to take on mechanical projects like this because it may be easy to you and me who have years of mechanical experience, but to the novice it may be overwhelming and then they are cursing my name when they get in over their heads. It's just not worth it for most untrained people. Most people will not have an attitude like I do of "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." I take on projects to learn from it whether I win or loose. Trying is half the fun. But most folks if its not a winner, it's a bad time. Many folks may not even have the tools either since most folks that buy these live in apartments or dorms. So its just cheaper and easier to buy a new unit. These days even the cost of a technician diagnosis is more than the cost of a new unit. They are made to be disposable. That is by design not by accident.

      You can do this on ANY model as long as you follow what I said. Must be UNPLUGGED and FULLY dry before plugging back in. I can't say for certain because each manufacturer will use different screws, but they are probably security screws. You would need to get a security bit set from Harbor Freight or Home Depot to be able to get those out. But these things are not serviceable. You are probably better off just buying a new GFCI unit (the little square box) from Amazon and cutting that one off. They are a safety item and that's probably why it keeps shutting off.

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. It simply means that the motor isn't moving. It could be done, or it could also just be that it is not getting any power. A lot of times these motors will lock up when they go bad. So a loose motor may just mean a blown fuse, faulty cable, bad circuit board controller, bad switch, etc.

      This is not an easy unit to disassemble. It has a lot of screws going through the unit and holding the internal stuff. It would take a lot of effort but all I can say is that if you are not well versed in taking stuff apart and reassembling it, this could become a real nightmare. The easy part is taking it apart. The hard part is putting it back together. The Q-tip probably got stuck in the fan assembly and that is why it wont work any more. It is wedged preventing the fan from moving. You could try hosing it off to see if it will soften the Q-tip. Then maybe the fan will have enough torque to break it loose after it dries. Only a guess on my part.

Also to improve the drying process I suggest taking a shop vac or any pressurized air source and blowing out as much water as possible so it drys faster and more completely. Do not plug back in until you are CERTAIN that there is no water left in the machine.

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's simple. Most people get confused, but the simple truth of the matter is that electrical things are the same as everything else when there is no power going through them. You can give a water bath to anything while there is no power (current) running through it. As long as you DRY it completely before repowering the device. It will never know and will not care that it was wet and long as you DRY it fully before giving it power. Without power all electrical devices become inert and can be cleaned just like anything else. Devices will short out when there is water AND power going at the same time because water will act as an electrical conductor and carry power to where it is not supposed to be. Remove the power and you have NO problems.

      That is difficult to say. It could be an internal switch such as the thermostat telling it to shut off. A faulty thermostat or faulty resistor could cause this. It could also be low on Freon causing the compressor to shut off after a few minutes of use. If the compressor is running to hard it will cause it to shut off to prevent it burning up. A minute leak is practically impossible to detect without equipment since Freon is odroless and colorless. It sounds like the unit is working properly until something tells it to turn off. This is where the diagnosis must begin. I cannot tell you any more over the interweb.

Either the compressor is shutting off due to low Freon or there is a sensor telling it to shut off too early. Most times if the Freon is low the compressor will cycle continuously, but is a pressure sensor it bad it will just shot down altogether. So that may give you some idea where to look.

    I'm really trying to find someone who'll bypass the temperature sensor and wire in their own temperature controller

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is not something that a simple DIYer will be able to do because you have to bypass the motherboard to do that. Since each one of these machines will be programmed differently it is not that easy to do. Even if someone does it, most people will not be able to duplicate it at home.

    I've got a Uberhaus PC10-AMD that was shooting out cold air for the first couple hours. But now its like warm air. I cleaned the filters and brushed the radiators on the side. I tilted it a little bit to the back. It sounds like the cooling is turning on and off....I dont know what to do anymore.... I'll keep on watching the video.

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After I made this video I learned that mine would cool fine for a few hours then would heat up and stop cooling. I decided to open up the case and found a lot more debris stuck at the bottom blocking air flow. Once again I hosed everything off and put it back together. Now it runs fine for as long as I want. You will probably have to open up the case because there is still junk inside that you can't get to.

      In this case it sounds more like an electrical problem. A capacitor or resistor is overloading and causing this issue. At this point you would need to hunt down an electrical diagram and start testing parts for resistance, capacitance, etc. If you are familiar with electrical issues and testing then you can go further. Otherwise it may be too big a job to get into.

      Either clogged filter or a sensor is going bad. Or worse, the compressor is giving out. Hard to say from here. Try cleaning it out and see what happens. That's the easiest and cheapest fix.

    i do not understand how anybody can have a air blowing device and not keep the filters clean. you breath the air it is blowing so wouldn t that be reason enough to keep it cleaned out? but i do get so many household appliances curb side and bring them to the garage and simply clean them really good and i end up with washers, dryers dishwashers refrigerators and a/c units n heaters of all kinds. and yes most work great after a cleaning. people just throw everything away and i thank them for it.

      No one will fix these things. Try doing what I did and see if it works. Or you can take the covers off and see how clogged up it is inside. You would be amazed how dirty these things get inside. That could be preventing the compressor from kicking on.

    It infuriates me when stupid people in a "disposable society" just keep throwing things away when all they need is proper care and maintenance.
    Stupid lazy idiots and their "just throw it away and buy another" mentality.
    People like that should be careful the same attitude is not applied to them when they prove to be rather "useless" themselves.

      The 75 F showing is the ambient or current room temp not the temp it was set to cool down to. When you set this unit to the temp you want, it will blinks back to the current room temp after a few seconds.
