    Purchased: August 2022 - still works GREAT! th-cam.com/users/postUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn I live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install.This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment.I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

      @@ChavezDIY The compressor was working normally giving out good cold air and suddenly it became completely quiet when the air-conditioner was switched on the next time, is this likely due to the capacitor issue? As you have said in the video there will still be starting sound coming from the compressor. But in our case no starting sound can be heard, what are the chances that it is a capacitor issue?

    Hi, I took my PAC apart to clean it up, this was after a major storm and Power Surge in my Unit. Everything is working fine on it except it's not blowing Freezing Cold Air. No Leaks, Compressor Works, but I don't think it's getting all the Power it Needs, so I think it's the Run Capacitor that needs to be changed. Thanks For your Tips and a Great Video, Chavez. • @CrusaderGeneral

    I think the capacitor gets damaged if the circuit is under current rating, for example when using a low amp extension cord. This is caused by the excessive heat that the capacitor is exposed to due to excessive resistance

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's not recommended to use an extension cord with these ACs. If you do, you will need at least a 14 AWG extension up to 50ft distance and that should provide enough amps. I wouldn't recommend running a 16 wire gauge cord. We did for a while and the plug had burn marks because it overheated.

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sounds like your fan motor is not working. The capacitor I replaced in this video is for the AC compressor. The fan has its own capacitor, but it looks rectangular, you can actually see it above the cylinder capacitor in this video. Your best approach is to get a capacitance meter and check the capacitance of both the compressor capacitor and the fan capacitor. I have a link to a capacitance meter in the video description, its one of the cheapest ones you can buy and it works well. You're always going to have an AC for the rest of your life, so the capacitance meter pays for itself.

    Greetings, my ac fans go to low speed as the compressor is trying to turn on, I hear some low electrical hum but I can't tell. Everything is clean and I even poured out both trays of water. At this stage I'm going to follow your tutorial here to see if its the capacitor. Is this the symptom your ac was having? Did you hear the fans go to low speed why the compressor was trying to turn on but doesn't?

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My AC was making a buzzing noise, so yeah there was more noise than just the fan. I don't remember the velocity of the fans at the time the unit wasn't cooling. I believe the sound the unit was making is included in this video, but you have to use headphones and turn up the volume to hear it. So the compressor has a capacitor, the round cylinder one, and the fan also has its own capacitor, its a rectangular cube looking one. Both capacitors have the capacitance range listed on them. The best way to approach this is to get a capacitance meter and check the capacitance of each capacitor. In the video description I have a link to a $20 capacitance meter on Amazon, its the cheapest one I could find and it works well. As long as you have fans and ACs in your life, you will need a capacitance meter to check the capacitors in case they fail.

      @ChavezHobbies I have a multimeter that has an option "200m", when I have it set to that I get a reading like yours where it starts at 3.1 then drop to the .3 range. Does my multimeter have the ability to get a reading?

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@damian3182 Budget multimeters don't have capacitance readings. The symbol for capacitance is uF, on some multimeters its listed as uA. I have two multimeters and neither can detect capacitance, that's why I had to buy that specific multimeter just for capacitance. You can buy a multimeter with capacitance readings but it has to specifically say it. You'll have to read the manual to check the capacitance with the meter.

    The compressor does kick in on my portable AC, but no cold air. Could it be refrigerant issue?

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      These portable units don't have a service port to add refrigerant. I would start with cleaning the coils (check the video description for a link on cleaning the unit). If the unit is low on refrigerant that means you have a leak somewhere. With the unit open but still connected, run the AC and spray soap and water on the copper lines to and from the compressor and evaporator to look for any leaks. They will show up as active bubbles if you have a leak. If no leaks and you cleaned everything, I would check the capacitor. You will need a capacitance meter to check the capacitor, a link to the cheapest one I could find is in the video description.

      It's normal for compressors to make a buzzing noise when they're running You can hear it in my AC after I fixed it. The compressor has rubber feet to try to decrease noise from vibrations but sometimes the vibrations get through and shake the outer case of the AC.

    • @kitn.6130
      @kitn.6130 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChavezDIY I research everywhere online and everyone is complaining about the compressor noise. it seems like a normal portable ac compressor sound. Some says it goes away after a few days or weeks of normal use. Although I think the rubber that's supposed to reduce noise is probably loose during transportation. It's sad. It's so loud

      Interesting. Yes, assuming the compressor is working good, all signs point to low refrigerant. Run the unit with the cover off and spray soapy water on all the AC lines and see if you can find the bubbles, which would indicate a leak. You can also buy a refrigerant leak detector on amazon and see if that helps to identify any leaks.

      @ChavezDIY  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For the 2 inch gap under the door, you can cover it with a door sweep, there are cheap ones at Home Depot. Portable ACs will not be able to cool down a room better than a window AC unit. I recommend portable AC only if you cannot install a window unit. If its blowing cool air, the only thing I can think of is to clean the coils, I have links in the video description to my video on cleaning the coils inside a portable AC. If you clean the inside but its still not cooling good, it just means you need a stronger unit. Something with more BTUs. A 8k BTU window unit will outperform a 8k BTU portable unit. My current window unit (6k BTU) in my office space is undersized so it takes a while to cool and never reaches a nice cool temp on a really hot day. I need to upgrade to a bigger unit with more BTUs.

      If its not cooling and its brand new, return it if you can. If that's not an option, I would check the compressor capacitor with a capacitance meter.

    What does it mean when the ac shakes violently?

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. So it is cooling but shaking a lot? I'm not sure, but something to look at is the compressor and the fans. You'll have to open it and run it with the case off so you can see if there is a fan that is off balance or the compressor rubber isolators are gone. The compressor shakes quite a bit and has rubber pads that isolate the vibrations. When those rubber pads go bad from cracking/breaking then the vibrations from the compressor will be transferred to the whole unit.

    My ac turns on fan runs compressor runs air that comes out is cool but not cold. No visible burnt wires or components no swelling or leaking on the cap all radiators and vents are clear unit new lost the invoice so cant return it. I thought gas leak but i dont know how to tell

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just because the cap isn't swollen or leaking doesn't mean its good, you need to test it with a capacitance meter. It could be running below capacitance. In the video description I post a link to the cheapest capacitance meter you can find on amazon. If you want to check for leaks in the refrigerant lines, remove the cover, run the AC and spray soapy water on the lines. Leaks will show up as bubbles.

    • @craygebrown8694
      @craygebrown8694 ปีที่แล้ว

      Iv sprayed water not soap water onto all the copper joins where they were braised together there was no bubbles or sounds of any kind had the ac running on its Coldst settings so now pulled the cap out and discharged it. My volt meter is uA not uF dose that make a difference. If put the probes on the back left red right and nothing displays

      @ChavezDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm sorry that didn't work for you. You need to use the capacitance meter to measure the capacitor before replacing it. It comes in handy. Capacitor failing is common problem and its likely you'll have air conditioning for the rest of your life so it pays for itself over time.

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here is my checklist for troubleshooting AC: Clean the filter
      Clean the coils
      Replace capacitors
      Check for leaks with system running using soapy water
      Touch compressor, should be hot
      Listen for fans, should be running
      Touch copper lines, one should be cold the other hot
      Check motherboard for burned components
      Check wires for any loose connections
      Check connectors for corrosion, clean off any corrosion with wire brush. If none of these items help, its likely the compressor has failed. The compressor is the most expensive part so you might as well look into another unit.

    Had a similar issue - i changed the capacitor and the compressor is running but still not cooling. Any ideas?

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting, the compressor is actually running? Does the compressor feel warm when running? Start with making sure the coils (evap and condenser) and air filters are clean. Next look for refrigerant leaks, low refrigerant can lead to no cooling. Look at the coils for refrigerant leaks, spray a mix of soap and water on the coils at different locations with the compressor running and look for air bubbles that may indicate a leak.

      No quick fixes and it requires HVAC tools/skills. I have seen videos where people will cut the copper line and use a brazing method to attach a schrader valve. Then they vacuum the copper lines with a vacuum machine and then add refrigerant (type and amount specified on the AC). Here's a video of someone doing that th-cam.com/video/_bL7hN6LS4Q/w-d-xo.html
