Are Wide Tyres More Aero? | Does Tyre Choice Really Make A Difference?

  • Aerodynamics is very much the name of the game in triathlon. one of those less obvious factors is tire choice. Rolling resistance & puncture resistance, but what about aerodynamic drag? How much difference does it make? Is it worth even bothering with? And what can you do to make the most of it? Sam investigates.

      Comfort over long rides, traction, rolling resistance, in that order. Tire aerodynamics are so marginal compared to the rider and bike drag that I don't even consider them.

      I think he is on to something, I tried 23mm tyres to be faster because it would be more aero. But being a big muscular guy weighing 105kg it actually slowed me down, because at 23mm I couldn't match the required pressure for my weight.

  • @TIGERARSGT
    @TIGERARSGT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    60 % of air wheel drag comes from front tire and 40 % for a rear one. Thus you must use 23 mm front tire, you already gain an aero advantage at 26 km/h over the wider tires. 25 mm rear tire is OK. There is a "105 % rule". Make the wheel rim 105% width of the tyre eg 23mm tyre = 24.2 mm wide rim.

    What I learned from the cycling world is Everything you see and read is a marketing scheme by manufacturers to get more money from consumers. I tested and rode 23, 25, 28. I always go back to 23s, its faster on straights and lighter on climbs.

    • @rogerc23
      @rogerc23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doesn’t it depend on the speed your going? I used to always have 23s until one race where I had to use 25s. For me they felt slower up to 35kph. Over that they seemed to really fly. That was on a TT bike. And over 40kph they really hummed along the ground and I felt like a 1-2kph benefit.

    • @damFr

      @@rogerc23 Well I didn't find the explanation of this video very clear. The most important aspect to explain when speakin about tires is the difference of speed depending on where you are located on the wheel. When riding speed is multiply by 2 or divide by 2 depending on where you are in the wheel (top or bottom). If you speak about aerodynamic of the tire this is the first step to explain because aerodynamic is about speed of the wind. But no word about that crucial point in this video. :(

    I want to know what people think about disc brakes on Tri bikes and shimano vs shram shifting on tri bikes

      What’s the bike?

    • @356z
      @356z 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rogerc23 just in general. Do people find disc brakes on tri bikes beneficial or not? And and how do people feel about the different groupsets on the tri bikes. Theres not too many people that can compare the 2 groupsets, specifically for tri bikes. Every review compares them on road bikes

    • @rogerc23
      @rogerc23 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@356z well in my experience people like disc brakes on tri bikes (they brake better) but it’s going to depend on where you are riding (hills or all flats), the type of wheels your riding (carbon vs aluminum frames) and the trade off between the extra weight of the disc brakes (which isn’t huge) and the better braking.
      So they are nice for carbon wheels especially if you have some hills and hotter weather.
      If you’re only riding aluminum wheels don’t bother with disc brakes.
      Another consideration is how often you will be traveling with your bike and having to disassemble/assemble it. Disc brakes can be more tricky in this regard.
      The group sets, hmmmm, maybe someone else can answer that part. I’m dont have a huge amount of experience with them.

    • @356z
      @356z 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rogerc23 so ive gotten to ride disc brakes and i agree with you. It does seem situational, but ultimately during a race there shouldn't be a lot of hills. I did think taking the axles off each time was annoying for the trainer though
