It is whistle, but definitely not intentional on her part. Like Mick said at the end, it was 2am. She was dragged out of bed to sing this part whilst also being mid to heavily pregnant. She actually had a miscarriage shortly after partly due to how intense the recording was. And she recorded it several times, and her voice was exhausted.
I think the message is that there are a lot of great singers out there, many of whome did the song proud, but simple fact is, NONE of them had what Merry brought to the song. The raw POWER as well as the feeling I get from the original. It still knocks me out! Again, lots of fantastic singers did the song proud, but none can match Merry in her prime.

These ladies did a fine job with this vocal! I have picked a few favorites, after just a first listen, but will have to "throw a study at it"! AND I am going to try to find the full vids of these clips,,,,, That being what it is, hard to beat the original - Merry Clayton Rocked it - Hard to top the original. a unique example of pioneering spirit in her voice and choices, and in just getting out of bed to record this iconic part of rock, in the middle of the night! At least I read that somewhere....
Nobody can do it like Merry. I wish it was Merry on stage in all the concerts, the only live video I found of Merry was when she was older & she sounded great but sang the song totally differently. I guess singing it the same way she recorded it would be painful for her. 😢

It wasn’t a skill full intentional move, it was just a good sounding voice crack that she didn’t do on purpose. The numbers do not equal better or worse singing. And Lisa actually sang higher for the main belts. Not saying she was better, I prefer Merry too, but Lisa actually sang higher than Merry. The voice crack doesn’t really count as it isn’t an intentional choice in singing.
