Your kitchen is so adorable. The original details, such as the mint back splash and the cabinet hardware, give it a charm that you can not find in modern kitchens. You've done a great job of making it functional yet keeping the original charm.
I totally agree. I like that she kept some of the original pieces of the kitchen to keep its charm. It really can’t go out of style if it’s a style of its own!
i love your kitchen......the little changers and painting it white really makes the kitchen pop out and even though its still a 1950s kitchen.,i love it......if it was my kitchen i would keep it now 😃
great job! I love it when people keep the old cabinets and get creative. I'm doing something similar with a 1950s kitchen. Consider replacing your cabinet hinges with hidden hinges for a cleaner look.
Your kitchen is really so nice now. It's good that you took on projects slowly, instead of ripping everything out at once. This way you had time to think about each change. Keep up the good work Shannon and Grant!
Shannon, I absolutely love what you did with your kitchen and that you did it on a budget!!! This is my favorite of your videos to date! You made profound, yet lovely changes and it is so homey and functional. You and Grant are very talented! Kudos!
I've dreamed of a 1950's kitchen my whole life!! Somehow I always end up in 1980's houses and I have to buy everything 50's for my kitchen. So much better, cleaner, and safer than a new particle board and formaldehyde kitchen with Chinese drywall, cabinets, and fixtures. Old stuff was made to last. Such a happy peaceful space.
You did a great job! I have exactly the same kitchen cabinets and also don't have a budget to completely replace it. Honestly, I love it more and more with every day. It has its own charm)
The mint addition makes it much more charming. I think it's because the tile is no longer a focal point but just one element of the whole. Plus mint and white always sooks so fresh. Love it!
Your kitchen is adorable Shannon! You guys did a great job restoring all of the charm. I know you are looking forward to the big renovation, but you are wise to give it time to plan - you will thank yourself for it! 💛🤗💛
It looks great and you ended up with a pretty and very functional kitchen that will serve you well for years. Grant is very talented....you guys are a great team.
A huge fan of retro especially the 1950's. I love your kitchen, it is charming. If I was re-doing the kitchen and had the funds, the only thing I would do different is to add hardwood floors and new countertops.
Love what you did with your space! Would give anything for an original 50's or 60's house but definitely not in our budget. The scroll work above the stove is just lovely - I understand needing to remove, but it was pretty. :)
100% Agree that this fix totally elevated your space. It's a blessing to have handy fixers in the family that can patch things in a pinch. Thanks for mentioning REAL LIFE, and how you have to fit in the work where you can. Not like a TV show where it all gets knocked out in a weekend. Slow and steady wins the race! I love the work you did with the design, paint and decorations and how your husband and kids pitched in as well, especially the flooring footage (adorable). Definitely this was a family affair and the results were so worth it. Thanks so much for sharing.
I completely agree with living in a space before making big changes. But I love the 50s vibe in that kitchen, so I would personally want to do something about the damaged tile counters, but I would definitely embrace the 50s kitchen for good! :) Overall it looks really cute and workable as is. Enjoy it!
I think this is an amazing transformation! And thank you for keeping a period kitchen - too many people rip them out and replace them with soulless Ikea units. I did the same for my parents: the house they moved into a few years ago had a solid oak kitchen which was completely bespoke. (It even still had the old pencil measurements on the side of the drawers where someone built it in the 70s or 80s). I stayed with them for a few days, stripped and sanded all the units, painted them white, and changed the handles, then painted the walls. And that was enough to transform it. I wish more people would learn that it's not only "ok" to work with what you've got rather than ripping out and replacing, but often it's actually nicer.
Love your kitchen. My house is from the 1940’s. The linoleum was lifting up. I cut part of it. Turned out it was like 3-4 layers. So I just would put kitchen rugs. Until we could afford to redo the kitchen as well. 10 years later. :). Did it ourselves. Takes time. You are a good designer, with lots of talents.
I LOVE this!!! 💘 If I could live with it, I would keep it this way. In my opinion, no reno needed! I love the character of your home, and your minimalist techniques are awesome. You do good work!!🌼🌿
Love it! If I were you I would never even worry about remodeling it, it looks too cute as it is! In our kitchen we sanded the old tile backsplash and painted it white. So we got a clean white look for the cost of a can of paint. I love the idea of making what you have work instead of immediately gutting everything and replacing it!!
I didnt have the mint tile, I had the aqua tile as my backsplash! I ended up painting them & the lovely yellowish with lavender & aqua counters with Rust-Oleum appliance epoxy which is heat & water resistant. You did a great job & there's a ton of storage!
I love your kitchen ❤ the mint and yellow accents are perfect. If you decide to get rid of your tiles try not to destroy them, sell them instead. I know certain colors go for a good amount of money. That’s a nice color, that’s in right now.
I am thinking back to my last kitchen update: Swiss coffee white on the kitchen outer cabinets and a warm, pale buttercup yellow on the inside of the cabinets. Every time I opened a cabinet door, it was like seeing a sunrise. You will be blessed every time you open a cabinet door if you paint the inside a color you love.
Love your kitchen updates. My grandmother’s home was built in the early 50s. Linoleum from that time period contained asbestos. When or if you remove the 70s/80s linoleum, you will most likely encounter some of the asbestos type. Also, be sure any old knob and tube electrical wiring has been replaced. Best of luck in making your home yours.
I think your updates to your kitchen are outstanding and apart from the tile, it has a completely farmhouse look to it....and actually I love the colour of the tiles but I know its not really modern - but as you said - its a fun little space and you did a great job on it! thanx for sharing this!
Hey Shannon! I LOVE how your kitchen turned out! I love the mint green tile honestly! It looks so clean and cozy now with all the bright white and mint green! Thanks for sharing!😊💗✨
Funny thing is, I am in the process of renovating my tiny kitchen and I have been looking for inspiration when I came upon your video and I love what you guys have done.
I love your kitchen. It reminds me of mine in 1961. Very cozy, homey and not a cookie cutter style like the modern ones. It has personality. I’d keep it. Donna, Mike’s wife
New here 😊 and all I will say is WOW your kitchen is one of the nicest kitchen's I have seen here on TH-cam. I think it is gorgeous, unique and so not cookie cutter like many on here. It is great to see something with a personality, I just love it.😍
My kitchen cabinets have the same hardware. I have not only knotty pine cabinets, but also my wainscoting in the kitchen and dining area. I hate to cover it it, but I can’t imagine refinishing everything. I also have the scallops over the sink. They were in the dining area and I yanked them.😂 I’ve been here 20 yrs and it’s time for a change.🙄 I really want to go with the 50’s style. My kitchen is a HUGE space. It’s basically a big square room in which they put a kitchen. Would love to add more cabinets, but…. Anyway, thanks for the ideas. I’ve got hardwood under layers of linoleum. Uuughhh. Gonna check out your husband’s channel now. Thanks again!🙏
I was worried when you said over the range microwave but that has to be the most well integrated OTR microwave I've seen! They're eyesores 99/100 times but this really fits the kitchen well!
This is just regular house paint in semi gloss. If your cabinets are nice I don't recommend this way of painting. It would last way longer and have a better outcome if it was either sprayed or done by a professional. But our cabinets were so bad there was nothing to lose LOL.
Great job! I totally agree with you on waiting. I’ve lived in my 1950s house for nearly 2 years. You absolutely must live in it fora at least a year before you do renos. Thanks for the ideas. I have been wanting a recap of your kitchen for the tips. We have a 1969 kitchen and the cabinets are awful. I don't have a carpenter but I have some handy painters and we have been considering doing the cabinets. And the tile floor is a great option just to improve the look💚
Shannon, our kitchen was just like yours when we bought our 1960 built house. Dark, dirty, dingy, beat up, and everything was covered in grease ! We bought new appliances, painted, and put in a new floor and countertops. Can you believe the previous owner had CARPETED the kitchen floor ?! Our cabinets were identical to yours. Replacing them would have cost $$$ , so we painted them like you did and replaced the hardware. Labor intensive, but budget-friendly. I love the vintage-y look of your existing cupboards! Hi Jane! Carpet in the kitchen! My eyes flew open when I read that. Our kitchen was also covered in grease. Your kitchen sounds great and very unique, we have decided if we do redo our kitchen we will definitely keep the vintage feel.
Would Grant be able to do all the cabinetry himself for the big renovation? That would make a big money difference but I love your retro kitchen as is too!
I love this kitchen. I'd never change it.
Looks perfect me! I have my 1950’s original kitchen and everyone that sees it loves it. They love the charm I think
Your kitchen is so adorable. The original details, such as the mint back splash and the cabinet hardware, give it a charm that you can not find in modern kitchens. You've done a great job of making it functional yet keeping the original charm.

Shannon!!! It turned out SO CUTE!! I bet you love cooking in your new kitchen!
Thank you! Yes it is so much better now =)
I LOVE everything about this kitchen!! I know people who would kill for this MCM décor!! What a happy spot to enjoy your family.
Thank you Susan! We are enjoying it now.
Your kitchen is really so nice now. It's good that you took on projects slowly, instead of ripping everything out at once. This way you had time to think about each change. Keep up the good work Shannon and Grant!
Thank you! We are like a slow train LOL
Shannon, I absolutely love what you did with your kitchen and that you did it on a budget!!! This is my favorite of your videos to date! You made profound, yet lovely changes and it is so homey and functional. You and Grant are very talented! Kudos!
Thank you Barb, I appreciate that! It is always fun to watch a full transformation. I hope you are doing well. =)
Your kitchen renovation turned out great. It looks so fresh and bright now.
Thanks so much! 😊
Love how it looks: updated vintage. Reminds me of my childhood home. 💜
Thank you Elena! I hope you are doing well.
Thank you Ashley! It is ironic that we bought a place with a 1950's kitchen because we had a 1950's themed wedding LOL. Maybe it was meant to be.
I love this mint color. And the 50s is my favorite era ❤
It looks very nice, I really like it that you kept the mint green accents 🙂
Thank you! 😊 I felt we had to work with what we already had =)
Me too ! I love vintage-y touches mixed with modern.
You did a great job! I have exactly the same kitchen cabinets and also don't have a budget to completely replace it. Honestly, I love it more and more with every day. It has its own charm)
Just realized im a whole year late and i really really love what you have done
The mint addition makes it much more charming. I think it's because the tile is no longer a focal point but just one element of the whole. Plus mint and white always sooks so fresh. Love it!
Your kitchen is adorable Shannon! You guys did a great job restoring all of the charm. I know you are looking forward to the big renovation, but you are wise to give it time to plan - you will thank yourself for it! 💛🤗💛
Thank you Robin! I agree on waiting, we have already changed our idea of what to do many times, so waiting has turned out to be a better idea.
Love the idea of moving the fridge! It really changes the space!
Great job on this reno. 50’s kitchen has its own charm.
I totally agree! Thank you for being here. =)
It looks great and you ended up with a pretty and very functional kitchen that will serve you well for years. Grant is very talented....you guys are a great team.
Thank you! We do work well together most of the time.
You've got skills, girl! I'm impressed. Great job!
Thank you Melissa!
A huge fan of retro especially the 1950's. I love your kitchen, it is charming. If I was re-doing the kitchen and had the funds, the only thing I would do different is to add hardwood floors and new countertops.
I love your vintage kitchen! I’ve a 1948 vintage kitchen. Doing a few things but not taking out any walls.
Love what you did with your space! Would give anything for an original 50's or 60's house but definitely not in our budget. The scroll work above the stove is just lovely - I understand needing to remove, but it was pretty. :)
Thanks so much! 😊

Thanks so much! 😊
I LOVE LOVE your 1950s kitchen
Wow, incredible transformation. Gave me several ideas on how to optimize space in my small kitchen and make it more functional. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
I love the white with the green tile! The tile brings the charm.
You did a great job on your kitchen, love the mint tiles. Now it all looks airy and spacious, very functional for a family✨
I LOVE this!!! 💘 If I could live with it, I would keep it this way. In my opinion, no reno needed! I love the character of your home, and your minimalist techniques are awesome. You do good work!!🌼🌿

You are so fortunate to have your husband’s skilled help. I would never been able to do some of those projects on my own. Looks great 🙂
I am very lucky! Without him the transformations would not look the same.
I didnt have the mint tile, I had the aqua tile as my backsplash! I ended up painting them & the lovely yellowish with lavender & aqua counters with Rust-Oleum appliance epoxy which is heat & water resistant. You did a great job & there's a ton of storage!
Thank you for watching!
looks fabulous. i would have to cover that damaged tile next to the stove either w/ a quick fix-large cutting board or some peel & stick tiles.
Great job. It looks so vintage n bright. Hard work but rewarding.
It really is! I love to see a space transformed.
I think both of you did a good job. Simply beautiful. 😊
Thank you Gina!
That looks like the seaform color tiles my grandmother had. 🥰
I had the exact same cupboard hardware. I went to white with brushed nickel, and it turned out well. 😊
That's awesome!
This kitchen is what made me hit the subscribe button! No regrets! 🧡
Thank you for subscribing! So happy to have you here. =)
I absolutely love your kitchen!!! So airy and bright love it... Great job guys!!!
I love it! It's so bright and cheerful!
Thank you! 😊

Very Pretty !! Updated But kept Some of The 50's Look & Vibe !! Good Job !!

What a fun idea! Thanks Susan.
Such a fantastic improvement! Love it! X
Thank you Lucie!
Great advice....I love your kitchen and the mint backsplash and walls.
Thanks so much!
It's adorable ~ I love it Shannon!!
Thank you Cynthia!
@@shannontorrens1 Welcome Shannon....I always love your channel and am behind and will get caught up and try to watch all I missed.
Love your kitchen. Looks like a happy place.
Thank you Opal!
Kitchen looks fantastic You both did a great job. 🎉
Thanks so much! 😊
Very nice Shannon! Small improvements make all the difference.
I think so too!
Awesome!!! I love it so much!!!
Your Mom did great pitching in! 🥰💗
Great that you changed up the exhaust fan area. 😁👏👏
Thank you! 🤗 Yes the Exhaust fan was a huge bonus. Now we don't have to smell lingering food smell.
Very nice transformation !!!
Really GREAT results! CONGRATULATIONS! : )
Thank you so much 😀

Great job on the kitchen transformation.
Thank you Katherine =)
Hey Shannon! I LOVE how your kitchen turned out! I love the mint green tile honestly! It looks so clean and cozy now with all the bright white and mint green! Thanks for sharing!😊💗✨
Thanks so much! 😊
The transformation is amazing looks so lovely now lol 💖
Thank you!! 😊
Well done!
Funny thing is, I am in the process of renovating my tiny kitchen and I have been looking for inspiration when I came upon your video and I love what you guys have done.
I love the white and green. The same colours as my kitchen.
Love the mint tile!!!
Love it, love 50’s houses.
I love it. I wouldn’t replace the cabinets
I love your kitchen. It reminds me of mine in 1961. Very cozy, homey and not a cookie cutter style like the modern ones. It has personality. I’d keep it. Donna, Mike’s wife
Thank you Donna! It is very cozy in real life too.
And moving the fridge was so smart and now you have room for a stand alone dishwasher you could have a butcher block on top.
Good idea Jil! I will look into that.
I have the original kitchen in my 1960's home....very much like this!
New here 😊 and all I will say is WOW your kitchen is one of the nicest kitchen's I have seen here on TH-cam. I think it is gorgeous, unique and so not cookie cutter like many on here. It is great to see something with a personality, I just love it.😍
Thanks and welcome
I really enjoyed this! Very encouraging!
Thank you Brandi!
I had a vintage kitchen and loved it so much, especially the curvy bric brac. Now I live in another house with the same boring cabinets.
It is fun to have something different than the norm, as long as you can make it your own.
Love ❤️ your kitchen updates!
Thank you Wendy!
My kitchen cabinets have the same hardware. I have not only knotty pine cabinets, but also my wainscoting in the kitchen and dining area. I was worried when you said over the range microwave but that has to be the most well integrated OTR microwave I've seen! They're eyesores 99/100 times but this really fits the kitchen well!
I agree, eventually when we completely redo the kitchen we won't have an over the stove microwave =)
Love it! I think the armour would look nice white too!
We have been debating what to do with the armour, paint it or leave it. When I get time I might work on that next.
You are a nice person, and the kitchen is very cool after modifications 👍😍
Thank you so much 😊
This is amazing! What kind of paint did you use???
This is just regular house paint in semi gloss. If your cabinets are nice I don't recommend this way of painting. It would last way longer and have a better outcome if it was either sprayed or done by a professional. But our cabinets were so bad there was nothing to lose LOL.
It looks so good! Great tips!
Thank you! =)
So cute how it turned out
Great job! I totally agree with you on waiting. I’ve lived in my 1950s house for nearly 2 years. You absolutely must live in it fora at least a year before you do renos. I too have had to do a budget friendly makeover on my kitchen to make it more functional until It eventually will be gutted but that’s at least a few years down the road. For now, at least it is functional and works for us.
That is awesome!
Love this! We have a 1950s galley kitchen too
Can you give more info on the floors?
Thank you! We just found this flooring at Home Depot. They are just square stickers. The only prep is putting that liquid down on the floor first letting it dry and then you start sticking them down. It was very easy. If you have a Home Depot near you they were pretty helpful with what we needed to get.
Love your kitchen!
Thank you Catrina! I hope you are doing well.
You're kitchen looks so much better after you painted it. people get too materialistic. Why do you need a full kitchen remodel. what you did looks amazing I would just leave it alone. I am not sure if I would have eliminated the dishwasher completely. I might have bought a brand new one. But save your money for more important things and leave your kitchen the way it is now. You guys did an amazing transformation .
Wow. It was awesome
Looks great! I think I had that original flooring in my childhood home in the 70s! :-)
I think that had to be a popular floor because so many people have told me they had the same flooring .
Great transformation!
What a difference paint can do! I want to paint our cabinets and do a better counter(pulling away from the wall). And I know I will love my house even more!
Yes paint changes everything! It is amazing how much brighter it is.
Great idea! Great job, you guys!
My bathroom has the same exact mint green tile everywhere!
Did you love it? JK =)
I don’t like it lol. Hopefully after living with it for 15 years we can update this year. 🤞 Lol
Thank you Rose! Sometimes even small changes make a big impact.
Красивая,чистая,уютная кухня! Лайк!
I like ours too; they are functional and they go with the older style of the house.
He can, it is just a time issue. Since he does not have all the machinery it could take forever.
Wow. I really like it.
Thank you!
