I totally agree that if something makes you feel angry, frustrated, etc. declutter it!

Yes! Skipping the things that hang you up is one of the best underrated tips! You aren’t making things any worse by putting it back and your brain will work on the problem in the background so you might actually come back to it and know what you want to do. But better to carry on and get some easy stuff out. Decluttering a big item and the most visible spaces can make all the difference to a room.

This tip is for those people who have ADHD or are sidetracked easily.
In addition to the three containers of Keep, Donate, or Trash/Recycle get a fourth container for “Goes Somewhere Else in the House/Garage”. This keeps you focused in the room you’re working in so you won’t wander off and get sidetracked on another thing. When you’ve finished decluttering in the designated area you’re working on, then take those things and put them where they belong (in addition to getting rid of trash & putting donations in the car).

I have successfully used the exact opposite of your tips also . One example is the declutter the visible clutter the flip side is to declutter the deep storage first. The reasoning being that the in your face stuff is actually used , the stored away stuff is the seldom used stuff. You then have room to put away the needed items. Another example would be the big stuff first , I try to do a small declutter or reset every day all the small bits add up. I am not disagreeing with you at all and I will absolutely use your tips.

This is what finally worked for me. After I made room on my shelves and in my cabinets, I could find a home for the daily/weekly/monthly use things that were strewn everywhere.

Love these mid-week programs - great new content and inspiration. I especially liked the one about guilt. I think there are different decluttering personalities - slow, fast, careful, all-at-once-and all are good! Would be a fun topic for a program maybe!

First starting process for me in clothing was that I put all my clothes in categories on bed....all. Then I chose my numbers of 2 pants, 2 capris, 5 blouses etc. I did not realize how much I had until it was piled on bed. Drawers in kitchen definitely like your pick out keepers first is very helpful. Always get some good tips from your channel. Thank you Shannon.

Great tips! I’ve recently realized that since I’ve decluttered a lot of things and have extra space, shopping is less stressful. When I find something that I really like and know I will use, it’s more enjoyable to purchase that item now that I know I have plenty of room for it. In the past I would often feel bad after shopping because I knew I already had many things I wasn’t using that were taking up closets, cabinets and drawers all over my house. I now trust myself to make good use of the items I buy and I continue to declutter so I’m not worried about accumulating too much. So my tip is if you want to enjoy shopping and reduce stress, declutter first! 😊🧡🐦

Every time I see clips from your garage clean up, I think "that was epic!". our garage is my husband's domain and while it holds a lot of stuff, it is mostly well organized. Do I think there is opportunity to declutter? yes, but I have noticed he is starting to let go of things, so my decluttering verve must be rubbing off. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

I agree, Shannon... Marie Kondo was many people's first introduction to decluttering but her Konmari method of pulling everything from a category out in a huge pile is extremely overwhelming when you're first starting out.

My most difficult challenge in decluttering is the flight of stairs to get it down. I can't lift heavy things, but...I am using a long under bed box to bring things down carefully like a tobaggan. It slides down as I guide in front. So much easier. I also do sewing projects and just recently reorganized them. I have 3 bureaus with different size drawers for notions, fabric, patterns, etc. It helps.

@@CheriBomzArt Could always get one of those exercise steps like from the 90s step aerobics shows lol they make some pretty compact ones you can easily stash away when not in use.

I really like the tip of taking things out that you know that you want to keep. Then asking your questions do I use this, like this, need this and does it fit? Also removing large items makes a space fill instantly lighter and clearer instant gratification.

What a great idea to remove the “keep” items from the drawer first! I have tried doing the reverse which involves a lot more digging in a crowded drawer .❤

The "don't pull everything out" at once work's for me when l decanter one shelf or drawer at a time. FOR EXAMPLE: My varied utensils drawer l remove everything. Then, wipe the empty drawer, refresh the liner, followed by putting in the pizza cutter, nut cracker, measuring cup's, lid remover, etc. When l find l have a duplicate nut cracker, l put it in the DISCARD BOX, then return to placing in drawer what to KEEP. When done with this drawer, it's neat, orderly, l'm HAPPY.
Onto the next drawer, shelf, closet to declutter!!

If you are holding something and struggling with “Keep or Not”…you could put it in a (not see through) container and date it and set it in a different area…if you find you need it you can still access it. Then after a period of time you can go through it and decide then.

The karate story ❤ Letting go of the bad feelings and enjoying being able to be generous, a win-win. You get to feel gratitude for being financially secure enough to give that away too. The gear would probably degrade in storage if you kept it, and who knows if the kiddo who didn’t stick with karate was also seeing that bag and feeling guilty.

I saw in one of your clips on getting rid of larger items that you were putting a child’s car seat in the back of your car I presume to donate…but my understanding is you can’t/ or the places won’t accept donated items like that because you don’t know if they have been in a car accident and the safety features may be compromised…maybe if you gave it to a friend or relative who knows you and has need of one would be ok. ❤ Good post.
