Moelas a Portuguesa - Portuguese Chicken Gizzard Stew

  • One of the Portuguese's favorite snack - aka "Petisco" - is chicken gizzards stew.
    Going to a neighborhood small restaurants, bars or cafes - also known as "tasquinha" - and have a serving of gizzards and a cold beer is one of those classics one cannot skip while in Portugal. It is a must do!
    Chicken gizzard for the ones of you that don't know what it is. Chicken gizzards are part of the digestive system of the chickens, sort of like a stomach. It is very nutritious. I describe them as "little meaty nuggets of joy"
    This delicious dish is best served as an appetizer with fresh bread. Because believe me, you don't want to spoil the sauce!
    👉🏼 INGREDIENTS
    • 1 kg of chicken gizzards, cleaned and thawed if frozen
    • 400g of chopped tomatoes, canned with juice
    • 1 large onion, finely chopped
    • 6 garlic cloves, finely chopped
    • 2 bay leaves
    • 0.33 ml of beer
    • Piri Piri
    • salt & pepper
    • some water
    • some olive oil
    • optional : some tomato paste
    Cooking time: I recommend a 45 minute boil, followed by a 40 minute stew.
