Hello @Fix It Planet my surface pro 4 got freezed and after forcing to shutdown i got only black screen... The keyboard lights still work and also wenn i connect a external hdd the light of the hdd shines... Is it possible that i have the same problem? Thx for your video
- I didn't have a spare 0-ohm resistor so I made a solder blob to bridge the contacts. Works like a champ! - I suspect the root cause for these 0-ohm resistors failing is elsewhere - so without a 0-ohm basically acting as a tiny fuse, what will blow up next? I think it is prudent to limit turbo boost with Intel XTU or Throttlestop on any of the machines with these symptoms to prevent the CPU from going into high-current mode. - BTW I love the trick of wedging up the mainboard with a spudger to free the battery contact without having to remove the whole board - Note: T5, T4, and T3 torx are needed to work on these things.
Also to report that this fixed my problem! SP4 wouldn't Turn On but noticed that backlight for keyboard was turning on. Luckily had replaced battery earlier this year and was easy to open. My resistor did not show any signs of burn but could see a voltage drop. Just did a little solder jump to test and everything works as usual!! Will later try to install properly the zero Ohm res. w/ proper equipment. Thank you for your video!

When power turn is press i hear some clicking sound in camera, and CPU area is little warm.... Is your symptom like me?? did your surface freezed like me??? please narrate/.... Thank you
Great video. I just replaced the batteries on (2) Surface Pro 4. First problem: I did not have the ribbon for the battery on the pin below the motherboard (video I had watched did not mention it) so it was not properly aligned and showed "no battery" when I tested them after installation. Both worked fine connected to power. Second and current problem that I cannot figure out: I re-positioned the ribbon from the battery on both units so it was on the pin and lined up correctly. Now, both units will not start on battery or connected to power. The light on the charger is continually on for about 3 seconds, then very quickly blinks of for split second, then on again for about 3 seconds. I do not see any burnt components, as in your video.
Update: I put a thin piece of plastic between the battery and contacts on 1 to see if it would boot, but it did not. I was reading another post and it said that if the prongs on the motherboard touch the wrong contacts for the battery, the motherboard could be fried. If that happened, what should I look for? If not this, then any suggestions? Whatever I did wrong, happened to 2 of these.
Hey John, Thanks for this and all the informative videos. Question: Was this device not powering up or just not powering the display? I have (and have seen) Surfaces that behave like this one but when a keyboard is attached there is power to it. I'm about to dig into a SP4 that has power but no display. I'll let you know if the same resistor is the issue. This could answer a lot of questions people have been asking about Surfaces for years.
Power may still reach some areas of the logic board depending on what failed. No power just means the tablet is not turning on. Maybe the CPU is not getting power for example so the tablet does not turn on and certainly no video will appear on the screen.

It's just got a sticker holding the screen in just like all modern phones you just need a heat gun, a guitar pick and suction cups. You have to be careful not to shove the pick in to deep as there's a ribbon cable attached to the screen

Hey @fix it planet - Do you have any idea what I am looking for when soldering the new resistor onto the board for a surface pro 4 that will only turn on while plugged in? I have all the parts and am ready to do the repair but dont want to take off the wrong one.
There is not a cut a dried answer. First close visual inspection under microscope is recommended. If everything looks perfect then probe around using a multimeter following the circuit for faults. Among other things bad caps, resistors, and even transistor is possible. Short to ground is a dead giveaway but finding the culprit takes investigation and patience.
For someone who don't have the kit required or no experience with detail repair like replacing resistor, it would be better to replace the mother board?

Hey! I have a complicated question for you. So I'm in the process of repearing multiple SP4's however one I'm working on is strange. The "fuse" is good. The diodes are good, and I'm measuring 3.3V beside the ITE IC controller. However I am only measuring like 0.5V on the 6 orange things (not sure what they're called) in the power delivery section of the board. what should I look for next?

Very interesting and educational video, I could use your help. Any suggestion from your part would help greatly. Thank you.
hard to find 1/4W 0805 0 Ohm everywhere has 1/8th watt. Some people say you could put two of these side by side? I'm trying to order some as fast as possible, I'd order from China but I need Amazon or something with 2 day delivery. Any ideas? Lots of sample books but no one with 1/4W sample books.
Hi there , tried the same after getting through your video for my SP4 not getting power up but unfortunately my resistor was giving a 0.1 ohm resistance and it was not blown up. Is there any other component which can be checked for same issue.
I pointed the wrong one. Do you know what I can replace the R15 537 V6R (8min44) power inductor coil with? I've got a board where this blew up. The resistor "000" was bridge.
I had an issue after replacing the battery, eventually I took it right back to the point where I could see the pins beneath the board where the battery sits, straigthened or unbent the pins, reattached everything and the tablet finally booted up.
My SP4 charger will not show the white LED charge light. First attempt less than 48 hours after normal use and proper charging. It just won't turn on. Tried three chargers and none will show the white LED charge light when connected to the SP4. I borrowed an SP4 and all chargers show white charge light. So must be my SP4 has a fault. What should I try first? (I am very afraid to try to remove the screen)
Is there any saving grace if the inner screen cables connected top right of the display connectors somehow rip? I replaced my battery and accidently cut those cables off when removing the screen, so now half of the screen wont turn on now. Only the other half turns on. I can split the screen slightly from digitizer and see the connectors.
No saving grace except for the fact those cables are cheap. $8-$10 bucks on ebay. Just make you know if you have a V1.0 or V2.0 display (they have different connectors)
I’ve got the same exact issue. I can’t even get the local mobile and tablet repair place to touch it because they say the glass screen will break almost every time. MS is of no help. $450 for a non warranty refurbished swap. I don’t have hot tweezers. Not sure if I should just give up on it.
Hello! Basically, Surface Pro 4 turns on and works through miniDP. BUT the internal screen not working: touch screen is, but there is no image. Have you ever stumbled upon something like this? It is NOT the screen, tried 3(!) different screens.
Hey there.. my surface pro 3 won’t turn on at all and I’m so frustrated.. do I really have to throw it away? Can it be fixed? When I put the charger in the light on the charger goes on when it’s attached but no joy with the surface. Would you say it’s gone forever..? Thanks xxx
Sir do you have a video on how to fix blown Power Adapter please give me link & if not then can you make one video. My surface pro 3 Power Adapter got problem it makes crackling sound.
When being less experienced it's actually better to just replace the power brick as a whole. Most common failure in power bricks are the capacitors (often due to the high temperatures produced by the power bricks), however it doesn't sound like it considering you've mentioned the crackling. Even when buying an 'third party brand' replacement (a QUALITY one though! not some cheap 10$ Chinese imitation!), you are often much better off and still have higher stability assurance than when attempting to repair it yourself. What's even more important if you're less experienced when working on things like power bricks: They 'convert' the high voltage AC from your wall outlet to regulated DC (12V) for your tablet. These circuits are considerably dangerous to "tinker with" if you have less experience. The replacement power bricks (third party) can often be found on the internet for about $20-$30. I'm actually someone who professionally works on electronics daily and I just bought a new one (also third party for €23) for my Surface Pro 2 (as secondary power adapter for at the office), works fine and even runs less hot than the original one by Microsoft. Hope this helped/informed you a bit :)
I need your help please. I have a surface pro 3. I try to change the LCD and after I pulled the ood one out I tried the new screen and I just have a black screen. The surface not turning on anymore. I did chacke the battery and I did try another LCD but the problem is still there. When I plug it to the charger. The charger gives a white light. What do I need to check ? I have a microscope and I can solder a bit so maybe you can give me an advice ? Thank you.
Some of the information in this video describes where to look. The tablets are arranged differently but use similar configurations of the chipsets. Look for something that identifies the area where we replaced the resistor (near the CPU area) and see if anything looks suspicious. Otherwise you will have to use a multimeter to measure around for a fault. Share what you find out and good luck.
Same problem, i replaced the screen on the SP3 and at first the screen was ok but the touch didnt work, so i detached the screen to see if there was some problem and i re-installed it back, tried to turn it on but the device was dead! wtf? My surface pro would not turn on after it being off for almost a year, I left it charging over night then it started working again. Just wanted to share for some that might also have the same problem.

my surface pro 4 will not turn on now. i got it up and working and it stayed on for as long as I wanted it to , but once it was turned off, it now won't come back on. it took a while but I got it up a 2nd time for as long as I wanted, but I now need some files off of it and it won't come on. what kind of hard drive does a SP4 have , can I remove it and put it in a USB drive chassis to try to get the files off of it. What kind of hard drive is in a SURFACE PRO 4? is it a Sata spinning drive, or SATA SSD, or full SSD, it's 8 years old so yea, just trying to figure out if it's worth taking it apart to recover the data but I've heard it's nearly impossible to take one of these apart to get to the hard drive. And if someone actually figures out how to get to the hard drive, putting it all back together is the 2nd most I'mpossible thing on the planet so I've been told. i want to share with you a unique a rare and unique case which you can take'it as a chalange: using a Microsft Surface Probook since new and from the begining were problems even with the phisical keyboard or usb , simple not working. Each time after a factory reset always started to work perfect. All this till one day when navigating the surface got stuck. I turned off and from that moment (1 years ago) till present i can not acces my laptop because is impossible to type the laptop password as : - phisical keyboard is not working - the touch screen keyboard is not showing up - the other option "on screeen keyboard" when you touch'it everything becames blocked and need to re-start. Also note that: - USB is not working and i can not reset the windows - the only way when i can type something is in the BIOS "the security question" using the touch keyboard. I tryed to reset'i using the power and volume (more than 100 times) and is not working. Anyone have any ideea ? Solution ?
Hi, Can you or any service you can recommend do this repair? My SP4 suddenly stopped turning on a few months ago and I am concerned about removing the screen. I would rather pay for the repair. Applies to any and all commenters, please help.
Dear fix it planet I understand you don have a crystal ball but I'm hoping you can help, nothing on screen but keyboard lights up if you turn it on, if the power resistor is bad would it allow keyboard to turn on. I do not want to tear into this thing and risk doing extra damage unless I have an exact component if possible. Also what type of heat tool are you using.
@@FixItPlanet1 oh really? when i plug my charger in the charging light is on just like yours. but when i connect my keyboard cover to it it also lights up. still be blue screen. i do the power button stuff and i will notice that my keyboard light goes off, so i know the surface has powerd down fully. now with your remark im wonder what problem im have then. i thought it also would be a blown resistor fuse. as an other option ive tried i remain keeping a black screen. used methodes. power button. power button volume up. and the pcr methode. tried windows p and ctrl shft winkey B.
After watching countless repairs by Louis Rossman I can recognize a fatal error in the repairing process. The resistor blew for a reason and it's not enough to just remove the old one, slap a new one and you're good to go.. If you don't investigate the whole rail to get to why it blew you're gonna blow it again or have a bigger problem especially that this resistor is near the processor.
Each person needs to decide what is relevant to the problem they are trying to solve. You share what you find with everyone after you have figured it all out. That resistor acts just like a fuse and lots of things can cause it to blow. There is nothing "fatal" about this repair. This exact tablet still works to this day and no one has died as a result of this repair. There is definitely more than one reason why something fails. It is always important to understand what you are doing and each person should do what they think is best. We are just sharing for others as we have time what we discover along the way.
i can confirm, that i exchange this 000 Resistor twice and each time it hold some months at customer, after it burns up. As you write, there is something else with CPU circuit, that let it take more current, so this resistors are blowing. Maybe it is the cpu.. but i'm not sure.
Some failures are common. Some probing around with a multi meter can help you locate the failure. In this case the blown resistor was obvious. I have some working boards I can use to reference measurements. I compare a known good board with a bad board.
Remova a unidade de estado sólido M.2 (do tablet), instale-a em outro computador ou gabinete USB externo e transfira os dados do perfil do usuário para uma unidade externa ou outro computador.
Yes that screen was already removed. I have other videos showing the process for removing the screen on several other models including this one. That step was not the focus of this video.

Hey! I have a complicated question for you. So I'm in the process of repearing multiple SP4's however one I'm working on is strange. The "fuse" is good. The diodes are good, and I'm measuring 3.3V beside the ITE IC controller. However I am only measuring like 0.5V on the 6 orange things (not sure what they're called) in the power delivery section of the board. what should I look for next?
did ypu manage to fix it ?

Heyy i don't know if anyone can help but while replacing the battery i used a metal tool and think I may have shorted something. All I know is that my surface pro 4 has no power with the new battery (the contacts are touching fine)
I have surface pro 4 don't turn on I checked all voltage diodes resistor fuses everything it's ok but when I putt chargeur nothing happens cpu don't heat at all
Can you give me any solution
Ic give 3.3v
This fuse give 8.7v
Diode battery only 12v to 8.7v
Diode chargeur 12v to 0v
Very interesting and educational video, I could use your help. On my surface pro 4 I replaced the screen and the LCD cable now the screen comes on during boot or if i go to bios settings but as soon as windows starts it goes off but the tablet is running which I can see on a secondary screen, also the touch doesn't work.
Isn't a Zero Ohm resistor really just a jumper? I mean, it doesn't do anything. It must act like a fuse then if the resistor does blow.
Thank you for the upload.
You're welcome
Thanks so much for this
You are so welcome!
Thank you very much. You saved the Surface Pro 4 of my Wife. Cheers mate.
What kind of paste you used???
No clean tacky flux amzn.to/3e98rVy
Did the keyboard also work in this situation?
Yes it works fine.
Hi there , tried the same after getting through your video for my SP4 not getting power up but unfortunately my resistor was giving a 0.1 ohm resistance and it was not blown up.
Is there any other component which can be checked for same issue.
I there way to buy these resistors without a donor board? I've searched 0 Ohm resistors and they look nothing like this.
you need SMD resistor
What is the square gray component marked r18 541 cah at 8min36 in the video? Thanks
Power inductor coil
I pointed the wrong one. Do you know what I can replace the R15 537 V6R (8min44) power inductor coil with? I've got a board where this blew up. The resistor "000" was bridge.
Another TH-camr's Video says that they are 0 ohm resistors from the factory. Do you know what the factory resistor measures out at?
Yes 0 ohms is correct sorry i said it wrong in the video.
I had an issue after replacing the battery, eventually I took it right back to the point where I could see the pins beneath the board where the battery sits, straigthened or unbent the pins, reattached everything and the tablet finally booted up.
Sweet! Good job!
Unfortunately you have done all you can do without taking the screen off.
@@robertcabansag5222 what are they called? when I searched it just shows the cables that connects the screen to the motherboard.
If any part of the display that cannot be removed is damaged then no. If there is a cable that can be removed and replaced then yes.
I’ve got the same exact issue. I can’t even get the local mobile and tablet repair place to touch it because they say the glass screen will break almost every time. MS is of no help. $450 for a non warranty refurbished swap. I don’t have hot tweezers. Not sure if I should just give up on it.
I'm getting the same response in my local mobile and tablet repair place...did you found a solution?
This is exactly what happened to my SP4. I am an artist and was using it daily. Can you tell me how much if I sent it to you?

Hello!
Basically, Surface Pro 4 turns on and works through miniDP. BUT the internal screen not working: touch screen is, but there is no image. Have you ever stumbled upon something like this? It is NOT the screen, tried 3(!) different screens.
How did you fix this? I'm having similar problem
do all the surface pro's have fans?
Nope
thanks.. i just fixed mine
Hey there.. my surface pro 3 won’t turn on at all and I’m so frustrated.. do I really have to throw it away? Can it be fixed? When I put the charger in the light on the charger goes on when it’s attached but no joy with the surface. Would you say it’s gone forever..? Thanks xxx
No I would say there is a chance it can be fixed.
Fix It Planet oh that’s cool.. I’ll try to find someone who can fix it. Probably somebody who can build computers - gamers.
Hi i have the same problem, did you solved it? thanks
how much is the repair?
Anyone else with a surface pro 4 know how to fix the battery drain issue when off ?
hi there, my surface book 2 (keyboard) its dead , i was using it and suddenly turn off , stop charging the battery . appreciate your time.
Interested in selling it?
Not now. You know how to fix it?
Same problem, i replaced the screen on the SP3 and at first the screen was ok but the touch didnt work, so i detached the screen to see if there was some problem and i re-installed it back, tried to turn it on but the device was dead! wtf? I've been careful enough when installed and uninstalled the screen, i dont understand! Tried everything to restart it but nothing.Did you find the issue? Thanks
thank you very much you helped me solve the problem 👌🏻
My surface pro would not turn on after it being off for almost a year, I left it charging over night then it started working again. Just wanted to share for some that might also have the same problem.
Thats the same problem hes describing, its super common. My sp4 does the same thing. If i give it 24h on charge it will have enough in the battery to start then it will charge fine
Hi Any of you know where is resistor of backlight screen on motherboard surface pro 4 ?
my surface pro 4 will not turn on now. i got it up and working and it stayed on for as long as I wanted it to , but once it was turned off, it now won't come back on. it took a while but I got it up a 2nd time for as long as I wanted, but I now need some files off of it and it won't come on. what kind of hard drive does a SP4 have , can I remove it and put it in a USB drive chassis to try to get the files off of it. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i just need ONE stinking folder , Just one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would replace it with 2 or 3 ohm resistor to stop it from blowing up.
Hi,
Have you Ever service a dead Surfacebook?
What type of flux are you using
I'm using MG Chemicals in the video but I think it burns too quickly amzn.to/2M2fncq Personal preference plays a role. If you like it fine, if not try another brand. ChipQuik also makes a good flux amzn.to/2YKUu7f
i want to share with you a unique a rare and unique case which you can take'it as a chalange: using a Microsft Surface Probook since new and from the begining were problems even with the phisical keyboard or usb , simple not working. Each time after a factory reset always started to work perfect. All this till one day when navigating the surface got stuck. I turned off and from that moment (1 years ago) till present i can not acces my laptop because is impossible to type the laptop password as :
- phisical keyboard is not working
- the touch screen keyboard is not showing up
- the other option "on screeen keyboard" when you touch'it everything becames blocked and need to re-start.
Also note that:
- USB is not working and i can not reset the windows
- the only way when i can type something is in the BIOS "the security question" using the touch keyboard.
I tryed to reset'i using the power and volume (more than 100 times) and is not working.
Anyone have any ideea ? Solution ?
I have pro 6, can't turn on. But when I click the on button, the right side of cpu is very hot.
Just no signal, I even connected the mini displayport, no signal. Dead silence.
Not a good sign at all. Probably a short under the CPU very bad omen.
Hi, Can you or any service you can recommend do this repair? My SP4 suddenly stopped turning on a few months ago and I am concerned about removing the screen. I would rather pay for the repair. Applies to any and all commenters, please help.
Jesus Chavez This happened to me as well, it would turn on with a recovery drive but when I come back it won’t turn on
What is the fuse? Is it 0805 (I=3A)...
Zero Ohm resistor
Is this the black screen of death repair?
Some people refer to it that way.
Dear fix it planet
I understand you don have a crystal ball but I'm hoping you can help, nothing on screen but keyboard lights up if you turn it on, if the power resistor is bad would it allow keyboard to turn on. I do not want to tear into this thing and risk doing extra damage unless I have an exact component if possible. Also what type of heat tool are you using.
If that resistor is bad then you get no power at all. We are using this Wagner heat gun to remove the screen amzn.to/2mYiYwH
@@FixItPlanet1 at what temperature? I used my riobi on a scrap board and the capacitors started popping like popcorn
How to reset bios?
Would surface pro 4 turn on without ssd?
Yes
@@FixItPlanet1 while i unplug, why it turn off? It does not depend on Battery.
changed the battery on the SP4, horrible design, runs off the battery and shows that it's plugged in but it won't charge...
how to fix ssd pro 5?
How do you know what you need to replace
Some failures are common. Some probing around with a multi meter can help you locate the failure. In this case the blown resistor was obvious. I have some working boards I can use to reference measurements. I compare a known good board with a bad board.

Remova a unidade de estado sólido M.2 (do tablet), instale-a em outro computador ou gabinete USB externo e transfira os dados do perfil do usuário para uma unidade externa ou outro computador.

Yes that screen was already removed. I have other videos showing the process for removing the screen on several other models including this one. That step was not the focus of this video.
Doesn't show how to remove the screen. Thumbs down.
Hey genius! We've already uploaded an entire video dedicated to removing and replacing the Surface Pro 4 screen. That's not the subject or purpose of this video.
