I have followed ALL of the advice given in the video. Furnace is now starting and running perfectly. THANK YOU!
Thank you SO much for this video!! I followed all of the step by steps in different videos, tried the flame sensor, and finally figured out that my orfices needed cleaning, I used a safety pin! It fixed things right away, thank you!!
Thank you so very much!!! I’m a widow, and couldn’t afford to call a repairman to check out why my furnace hasn’t been working since the middle of last winter. It was a couple clogged orifices. Your videos have helped me realized there are a lot of things I can do for myself here!
One of the burners on my American Standard Freedom 90 would only light intermittently. And when it did light, the flame was weak and had a lot of orange to it rather than being entirely blue. I followed this video's advice on cleaning out the gas line orifice. It fixed the problem immediately. Great stuff!
Thank you, thank you thank you. I’m not afraid to tackle things I don’t know, except for electrical, and natural gas stuff. Furnace would not start yesterday. Your other video showed the flame sensor needing to be cleaned. Not to bad getting off, but a PAIN putting back in. I gave up on getting it started yesterday, after it still didn’t start. I figured out the flash code stuff today, and only had the first 2 burners firing. You explained what I needed to do. Simple enough with a paper clip. It fired right up. I was dreading a $200 service call. And this was definitely a DIY fix.
This video *almost* got me to my solution. I had already cleaned the flame sensor, checked the igniter, and checked the heat limit switch with a multimeter. It was the comment here about the wings on the burners that saved the day for me, which led me to Jay's video on cleaning the burners. This is at least the second time Jay's videos have saved me several hundred dollars in repairs, plus I get to learn cool and useful technical stuff too. Thank you so much!
Spent a few evenings watching troubleshooting videos, trying many things and this one was the first to actually explain and diagnose the issue I was seeing. Had a hvac guy tells me my inducer motor was bad, even though it fires up, and controller was bad. I reamed the manifold holes and presto magic, all 4 burners light. Your videos are extreamly well put together and you do annamazing job fully explaining things. Thank you again. Keep them coming.
Jay is the BEST!! I've watched other videos, and none are more informative and detailed as his. Thanks for taking the time to explain how everything works and every aspect of what is needed to be done. Cleaned the two orifices and now it's running great! Thanks again!!
This is a very common problem that even experienced hvac technicians have misdiagnosed. This video can save you a lot of money and solve a very common problem with a lot of older furnace. Jay is very good at explaining in simple easy terms.
Thank you from Australia. My heater stopped and was getting an error message. I tried a couple of video fixes before I found yours. Cleaning the jets fixed it! Call out cost $300 saved. Thanks again!
Just happened to me after the Heating and Air person came out to do an inspection and clean out the furnace. They are telling me its likle goi g to need new burners, orifices and maybe a gas valve....im skeptical. Thanks for this video. 👍👍👍
As an Hvac contractor, I rarely see clogged orifices. Much more common are rusty burners. You need to remove the burners and clean with a wire brush. Sometimes the burners are so corroded they need to be replaced. Especially when running propane. Some manufacturers offer stainless steel burners for propane use.
Thank you sir! Used this today... saved me a service call. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge! I had seen a couple other vids about the flame spreader channels likely being the culprit but when I removed the burners they were fairly clean. I used a finishing nail to reach back in and clear the nozzles and poof... all good. Thanks!
I’ve been googling and and watching TH-cam and everything was about the flame sensor. I got a new one and it still didn’t work. Your video was the only thing that helped. Now the furnace is working
On a Friday night at 2am of course... My furnace was firing up but the burners wouldnt ignite so it was immediately shutting down. After watching this video I tried this and it worked!! Even if this just gets me through the weekend - THANK YOU!
Thanks so much for all your videos, particularly this one! After going through the rabbit hole on forums of thinking my burners were turning off due to the sensor, noticed the third one with the sensor, was not firing. Cleaned as suggested and voila, it worked!
thank you for the video!! i lost sleep over our furnace problem and you saved my headache!! My issue was that only one burner would fired up if the furnace cover is on. If i leave the cover out, all the burner would fired up!! Then i noticed the 2nd and 3rd burner’s flame is smaller than the 1st and 4th burner. So i suspected some holes are partial blocked. I used your wire tip to clean all the burner holes, and everything works again!!! thank you very much!!!
Great Video!!! It took me a while to get down to the fact one of my nozzles was partially blocked, but I got there because of this helpful video. I saw better flame flow on my initial cleaning, but I had to go deeper in the nozzle to solve the blockage. I am on natural gas, not propane.
Wow, this was great! Very clear presentation and I realized the wings of my burners were corroded. In troubleshooting I found that the 1st burner would light but not the other 3 unless I blew gently on the 1st burner towards the other 3 when the flame was present. Maybe not SOP but it helped me realize the wings were probably the culprit. Cleaned the thermocouple while I had it accessible.
Thanks so much, Jay! I used a number of your videos to progressively troubleshoot and repair the furnace in a rental property I have been renting and didn't seem to be maintained very well. Your clear videos and steps led me to an inexpensive self-repair. Many, many thanks!
@@WordofAdviceTV I have tried everything I know but having issues after replacing igniter, flame sensor, run capacitor and tested all switches. The furnace gets to the igniter turning on then no flame and kicks off. Inducer is working, pressure switch works. Goes through this cycle 4-5x then goes into lockout mode. What am I missing and why is it not getting a flame?
Thanks for this video Jay! Got my first house with a gas furnace and the burner in front of the ignition coil was clogged! Thanks again and hope all is well.
Good and very helpful video. I would add that the “ cross runners” on top of the burners can also be the problem. They should have a gap of the thickness of a dime . I’ve seen them closed up and burners won’t light. Thanks for the great video.
This is great! I just cleaned out the orifices on the gas manifold with a paperclip and that did the trick. Do you have any videos on replacing the inshot burners themselves? Mine are all corroded and I read it could cause a yellowing of the flame and overall deficiency in the ignition and operation of the furnace. I found the burners themselves on Amazon, but a video would be great. My burner housing is fairly corroded altogether. It would be great to replace the entire housing even.
Thanks!! This was my problem and i was getting a code 34 the flame sensor was not getting a flame, went ahead and cleaned the sensor but after cleaning the nozzles because of your video.
Thanks for this. I have been trying to fix this issue for years. Every hvac techs just wants to throw away the unit and put in a new one. I have yet to find a company that knows what they are doing. The problem is not all burners light every time so it misses heat cycles and can get cold. If i use a torch i can light the burners manually and it runs that cycle fine. I used a piece of wire to clean the orifices. Then on the second attempt the burner lit. I am not sure if that is luck or what but i think you have lead me on the right path.
You are fantasic! I love your self help video's. This helped me solve partially obstructed orfices on my older Century furnace! Keep sharing these videos! A+++
Awesome. 2 of your video's solved my issue. 1st I thought the flame sensor so pulled it out and cleaned per your video. Then it still didn't work so I examined further and notice that last burner didn't seem to light up. This video here solved the problem. Great explanations, quality video and to the point! Thank you!
The burners have wings that that are made up of a top and bottom and they are separated by a few thousandths of an inch. The burners are coupled together via these wings and it is through them that the gas propagates from one to the other lighting each burner along the way. If the wings develop rust or debris between the separations, it will stop the flow of gas and not be able to light the next burner in line. That is what happened to mine and I cleaned the wings out with a feeler gauge slid between the separations. All was well.
$1000 in playing music part replacement I sent the HVAC guy home. Did this, furnace works. Thank you! I will probably just buy a new pack of burners for $75 and replace them next summer.
Man, these videos are super helpful. Had an issue with my furnace. Turned out to be a corroded wing on one of the burners. However these videos helped me figure out where the problem was. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. Your explanation is clear and easy to follow. My furnace ignitor sometimes works, but sometime do not. When I opened the door, the ignitor grows, and the gas valve opens (I heared the click sound), and then sometimes I see small flames, and sometimes I do not see small at all. Can you what I need to look into?
Does a 2stage furnace also have 2 igniters? My furnace is a high efficiency furnace and has 4burners and an igniter at either end of the burners. It has one flame sensor and two pressure switches. I am trying to learn all about my furnace. I live in Alaska and furnace in the winter is really important. I look forward to hearing from you and I really enjoy your videos. You know your stuff.
Thanks for the video step by step information 👍. I just have a question before I go ahead and do what you are saying in this video? If all of the burners aren't working and everything else is the igniter is glowing red hot like it's sapposed to all of the ventilation is good air flow is good filter is good lol and the fans are all running but the burners aren't lighting could that maybe be the problem? The very first igniter might be plugged up? I have a fairly new only 6 years old Armstrong furnace. I'm trouble shooting and it saying that the pressure switch closed with inducer off. I see no other reason for the burners not to light but maybe they are plugged. Please get back to me 🙏 I would really appreciate it. I've been trying to figure it out all day😡. Thanks for a great video 👍.
Great work as always. I have a carrier rtu with this issue. I cleaned. Even replaced manifold and orifices and still having issue. Incoming gas pressure 10 in.wc and 3.5 leaving valve and still intermittently having this issue. Any ideas. Replaced ignitor and flame sensor as well, but obviously no flame to sense on 2nd burner. 2 burner setup.any ideas.
My 8 year old Lennox does this but only occasionally, visually after sitting, say 1 day. But when normal cycling it'll start fine. Cleaned all orifices, flames look good. Seems to not have enough gas till multiple startup cycles . Another furnace on same supply works fine.
Hi Jay Tks for all the video but my still have a problem with the igniter still not working after I change a new one Any chance you give me an idea Tks very much
I have 6 burners, 4 out of the 6 are coming on, 2 out of the 6, one located by the flame sensor is not coming on. I will do this troubleshooting when i get home. Thanks.
In my case when only a couple burners were getting gas to them, I found there was power going to the gas valve but it was only allowing 0.5" WC natural gas to the manifold. Changed it out. Problem fixed.
Great video. You're a braver man than I, blocking the gas jets with your fingers! :-D But... I have a brand new RUUD 802V that is doing this from time to time. The outlet gas pressure tests good. The control board, gas valve and complete manifold/burner assembly have been replaced but no joy. Any ideas what might cause this?
Thank you! Have you tried cleaning the burners? I have a video on that if you need it. If they have clogged transition wings, that could cause some of the burners not to light as well.
@@WordofAdviceTV Thanks for the reply. They cleaned the original burners - not that they were dirty as the furnace was only a few weeks old - and even replaced the original burners. No joy. The tech was here again and managed to get the problem on a video which he sent to RUUD. The RUDD engineers said this had happened on "a few" furnaces and hand tested a new burner set for proper operation. The new burner set is scheduled to be installed tomorrow. So we shall see... Both the original and first replacement burners are going back to RUDD so they can figure out what happened. You can smell a bit of gas after the right burner lights up so I am thinking that, for whatever reason, the flame is not making its way down to the other burners. I'll let you know if they figure it out.
@@RogerPack Yes it was. RUDD sent us a new burner assembly they had hand checked to be in spec and that solved the problem. I sold that house in November 2021 but it was still working fine when we left.
good video... mine is American Standard gas boiler, from the 70's, yesterday I noticed that pilot stays on, but boilers under 70 degree dont burn... any idea? thanks
how often should you clean the burners? Reason I ask I have a furnace boiler and I see rust particles accumulating in and around the boiler burners. They don't seem to effect the flame, so I let it be. Is it important to keep them absolutely clean? Good videos, hope you do one on washing machines!
As long as the rust and build-up does not impede the flames, it's all good. The mainstream HVAC suggestion would be to clean them every year or two, make some effort to brush them down and get them clean though so that your burners burn cleaner and you don't have any incomplete combustion which could raise your carbon monoxide emissions. If you have a long brush, it's pretty easy to clean up those burners. (if the ones you have are what I am thinking about anyway) I do work on washing machines but they are all different. Can't say I love working on them either heh. Maybe I'll make a top ten washer problems video down the road.

Great videos. I've got a furnace with only two burners. First always lights but often the second burner doesn't light on first time. I cleaned burners, same thing. I replaced both burners and seems better but flame still doesn't always spread to second burner on first attempt. I removed orifice on second burner and it is clean. What would you try next?
Hi Jay. Thanks so much for the videos! I'm having a slightly different burner not igniting issue I'm wondering if you've encountered. The problem I'm having is that sometimes that last one or two burners in line don't ignite. I have a Trane XV90 with 5 burners and the issue is intermittent. Sometimes all 5 light, sometime only 4 do. Sometimes the 5th one will work after one failed attempt, sometimes it fails three times in a row. Not sure what could be causing the problem where it works sometimes and not others. Would love any thoughts.
The valve regulator may be failing or your gas output pressure may need adjustment. You will need a manometer to measure water column out of your gas valve.
@@albertosimental4578 I was. The problem was with corrosion on the wings of the burner tubes - not allowing gas to pass through to the flame sensor fast enough. Pulled the tubes and cleaned the channel the gas runs through it with a wire brush and sand paper. Everything now ignites properly.
great video I think I may have a the same problem but the 1st burner office is plugged and the 2nd office ignites all of them and then they all come on no roll out but it blows backs like their is accumulation of gas build can it be the plugged orfice as well? just wondering its new furnace hoping its not the heat exchanger
This video is very helpful but I do have one question: what if the gas is coming out but none of your burners light. I can smell the gas but the burners are not lighting at all.
Is your ignitor glowing or sparking? If it is glowing but not lighting even thought the gas is coming out, then most likely that is a weak ignitor that should be replaced.
my Furnace sometimes start sometimes not started when they started the flame going pretty fine first Where ignited it flame slow what happened.ThankYou.
Tried this but still only first burner lights. Then put a fire stick next to the first burner - upon ignition and all came on. It's almost like the igniter glow stick was not close enough to the second burner to ignite it. I think my igniter may be failing and just not glowing hot enough to reach the second burner. I noticed in your example the glow stick was completely glowing while I think mine was only partially glowing. Will try replacing the igniter and let you know. (Luxaire Furnace)

When I opened the door, the ignitor grows, and the gas valve opens (I heared the click sound), and then sometimes I see small flames, and sometimes I do not see small at all. Can you what I need to look into?
Thank you again for a great video. Much appreciated.
Thankyou for making this video, may God bless you
Thank you, he has many very helpful videos. Thanks again
Thank you so much! I had my garage furnace back up and running in just few minutes.
You're welcome! Glad to hear you got it fixed! Thank you for coming back to leave a comment.
Saved me hundreds.
Thanks nice video keep up the great work
I like the short informative video
Thank you!!
This helped me. Thanks for doing what you do!
Awesome information. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent! Thanks for sharing. Muchas gracias!
I also cleaned out everything and 4th burner still won't ignite sometimes unless I blow on it while it's trying to light. Following.
Same for me if i blow on it it will light
My 8 year old Lennox does this but only occasionally, visually after sitting, say 1 day. But when normal cycling it'll start fine. Cleaned all orifices, flames look good. Seems to not have enough gas till multiple startup cycles . Another furnace on same supply works fine.
Sir you have balls of steel
Hi Jay Tks for all the video but my still have a problem with the igniter still not working after I change a new one
Any chance you give me an idea
Tks very much
I have 6 burners, 4 out of the 6 are coming on, 2 out of the 6, one located by the flame sensor is not coming on. I will do this troubleshooting when i get home. Thanks.
Worked like a charm, thanks much!!
Glad to hear it worked for you! Thank you for leaving a comment!
THANK YOU for saving me mucho $$$$
You are awesome 👏 👏👏
Thank you 🙏
In my case when only a couple burners were getting gas to them, I found there was power going to the gas valve but it was only allowing 0.5" WC natural gas to the manifold. Changed it out. Problem fixed.
Gas manifold sounds intense - this sounds like a I need a licensed Chaco person
You replaced the valve?
@@SkyWriter25was it resolved?
@@RogerPack Yes it was. RUDD sent us a new burner assembly they had hand checked to be in spec and that solved the problem. I sold that house in November 2021 but it was still working fine when we left.
good video... mine is American Standard gas boiler, from the 70's, yesterday I noticed that pilot stays on, but boilers under 70 degree dont burn... any idea?
thanks
I had that same problem last month, cleaned the burners with no luck, it was a weak gas valve. The furnace was like 10 years old.
Thank you for sharing! Anyone else who has the same problem will appreciate that :)
How much did it cost to repair?
how often should you clean the burners?
(if the ones you have are what I am thinking about anyway)
I do work on washing machines but they are all different. Can't say I love working on them either heh. Maybe I'll make a top ten washer problems video down the road.
Jay just want to send you love and blessings, my hvac school is going to be paid by Pell Praise God man. I'm the one handed dude just in case because you are getting famous hahaha love you brother God bless you.
Hey David! Happy to hear the good news brother!! The schooling getting paid for is totally awesome! Now you are set to go and get started on HVAC. I think you will enjoy it! Pretty soon you will be able to point out any blunders I make in my videos. Lol, and don't worry, I remembered David Delgado pretty good ;) I haven't forgotten you and wishing you great success man! Now that my channel is getting bigger though, the comments volume is going up too so I no longer answer every single comment but I still do try to get to most of them. (TH-cam does not always notify me of new comments too) Well, good luck and God bless! Merry Christmas to you and family!!
@@WordofAdviceTV you to it means so much that you would take time out to answer and encourage me I wish you nothing but blessings and prosperity and favor and safety and growth in this new year
@@daviddelgado475 Mr. Delgado! You must be in the midst of studies right about now! What are your initial impressions? :)
Hi brother, I'm sorry that I have not answered you Jay forgive me. Hope you are well and your lovely family always blessed by God. I had to drop the classes due to health issues and I had car troubles as the school is 45 mins away. It was discouraging but they made the coure open enrollment now so I can start in may. Thank you for remembering me ...It was encouraging and so kind brother! I was a little intimidated too I can't lie but I want to make myself go for it. @@WordofAdviceTV
@David Delgado Oh darn.. So you ended up not going this semester. Sorry to hear about that! You were so excited for it.. But if you believe in God, then everything that happens, happens for a reason and in your best interests. That must mean that this semester was not the right time then. Thank you for the kind wishes and no worries about not answering right away! I get a lot of comments nowadays and don't respond to everyone so I definitely don't expect an answer from others every time as well. Anyway, with your attitude, I am sure you will succeed in whatever path you choose! May God bless you and your family as well brother! (Don't forget that it's not the talented that win, it's the persistent)
How about going over a new line of units or a hp being checked in heat mode with gauges? Thank you. Carry on sir.
I appreciate you making these videos. I hit the Like button. Hopefully, a lot of people do the same. Thank you!
Hi Jared , I'm having the same problem. Were you able to fix the problem?
The valve regulator may be failing or your gas output pressure may need adjustment. You will need a manometer to measure water column out of your gas valve.
@@albertosimental4578 I was. The problem was with corrosion on the wings of the burner tubes - not allowing gas to pass through to the flame sensor fast enough. Pulled the tubes and cleaned the channel the gas runs through it with a wire brush and sand paper. Everything now ignites properly.
U can also crank up the gas valve regulator as well on the low fire side
great video I think I may have a the same problem but the 1st burner office is plugged and the 2nd office ignites all of them and then they all come on no roll out but it blows backs like their is accumulation of gas build can it be the plugged orfice as well? just wondering its new furnace hoping its not the heat exchanger
Your the best
Omg. Thank you so much. It worked for me.
Muy interesante Gracias 👍
This video is very helpful but I do have one question: what if the gas is coming out but none of your burners light. I can smell the gas but the burners are not lighting at all.
Is your ignitor glowing or sparking? If it is glowing but not lighting even thought the gas is coming out, then most likely that is a weak ignitor that should be replaced.
my Furnace sometimes start sometimes not started when they started the flame going pretty fine first Where ignited it flame slow what happened.ThankYou.
Thanks bro.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
This works for me! Thank you, you rock!
It's more likely to be a dirty burner. I have a video where I explain that and show how to clean them: th-cam.com/video/6ehk0NZVFcg/w-d-xo.html
How offten do you need to change the spud or should you change the spud? Easy to do for sure.
You shouldn't need to replace the spud. Cleaning it has always been sufficient enough for me
