I had a furnace repair man come to my house to fix my furnace which would not light. He charged me $200 and was here for 15 minutes. Told me my heat exchanger was cracked, amongst other things that needed to be replaced. He told me it would be $6000 to fix it and that I would be better off getting a new one from him. I didn’t have the money to fix or replace, so I called my uncle who is pretty handy and knew somebody in the furnace business. He was able to get a camera and verify that the heat exchanger was not cracked! He got all the parts that that guy had said I needed at wholesale and replace them for me… None of this worked. We spent three days trying to get this furnace to work and never could. Stumbled upon your video, and with the help of a $4 brush from Home Depot was able to get the furnace up and running and it has been running perfectly for the last month!! Thank you for your helpful video, it was very well done and easy to follow. I will be subscribing, and supporting your channel. Thank you for the helpful advice, I wish I had found you earlier! Thanks!
Yeah I knew my inducer blower was failing, but it's been a few years since a professional has looked at my furnace so I paid for a diagnostic. He confirmed that it's failing, and quoted me over $1k for replacement. He then started talking about how old it is and with the price I should get a consultation for a new furnace. I ordered a new inducer online for $150.
I paid $200 to have my central heating serviced. He didn't do any of this. As the heater sometimes shut down,, his testing said that main control board was faulty. $580 price tag. Did Not replace the board. After he left, checked YT, found your channel and.............. I cleaned the flame sensor, and unit has not failed in 4 months. Thank you.
Yeah.... Unfortunately there is that in the industry too. I'm glad to hear my videos helped you fix the problem yourself! Thank you for commenting and sharing your experience.
If you can do that, look into changing out the igniter (they go bad!) and have one on hand for backup!!!! . Very very easy to diagnose and change out. I had mine go out after one year, in the winter, and a buddy (HVAC guy) just happen to be there visiting.. Had one on his truck.. lucked out.. Cheap online... $$ if you call someone..
I had already cleaned the flame sensor, checked the igniter, and checked the heat limit switch with a multimeter. This video about the wings on the burners saved the day for me today. This is at least the second time Jay's videos have saved me several hundred dollars in repairs, plus I get to learn cool and useful technical stuff too. Thank you so much!
Oh my gosh!!! Your instructions were so spot on!! I have a very similar furnace as the one you've shown. I had the cover off my furnace while watching your video and now I am about to dive in and clean those burners. I can see exactly what is causing my furnace to trip, the dust and rust in the exact spots you said would cause it not to ignite. Thank you very much!!! Your awesome!! 11-17-23
Can't thank you enough for this video. Our sx had been having trouble lighting up. You could hear it trying to light the burners but would only be successful after about the 3rd to 4th try. Got up in the attic and did exactly what you suggested with the burners themselves which weren't too bad. Decided I'd go ahead and clean the flame sensor and the gas orifices as well. Put it all back together and turned it on and off twice just to be sure it was gonna work. Total success! I'm a 50-something yo female and if I can do it, anyone can. Thanks again!
I just want to say "Thank You"!! I have spent the last 3 Winters and about $300 trying to figure out why my furnace would only light some times. I have changed out almost every single part possible besides the blowers and inducer and was ready to give up and buy a new furnace. I happen to stumble across your video. I went downstairs at 1:30am and pulled the burners out and the wings were plugged full of rust. Put it all back together and it lit the very first time and it usually never lights the first time and will usually lock out at least twice a day. Thank you again so much!
@@WordofAdviceTV I have a quick question. I have a Trane XR95 furnace and the burners are supposed to be stainless steel, but why do they rust? A quick search says that LP gas can cause rusting issues, but seems odd that it would happen to stainless steel. It appears that the middle of the burner has a iron insert. Either way I may just buy some new burners as they seem fairly inexpensive.
@@wisneaky, I work in a manufacturing plant and we use stainless steel of various grades. Stainless steel will rust, just takes longer than regular steel. Heat is a big factor in causing any steel to rust (hobbyist blacksmith), the better grades of stainless take longer to be affected.
@@rwarrich Humidity is also a factor. My furnace is in my shop and goes weeks without use unless I need it. So far no trouble except a failed igniter, but now I know how to clean the burners thanks to this video.
I am a retired HVAC tech, and I like to watch you explain how everything works,it brings back memories, you are a good teacher.I used to love my job, time goes so fast going from one house to next,I used to go to the house of the president of Abbott Labaratories, in Lake forest Illinois.. that had five furnaces,. and did clean and service on them every year.
I spent over $200 to have someone do this last year. I watched with hopes of doing it myself if I needed to. This video helped clarify the steps and make it super easy. Immediately worked! Thank you!
Thanks for your video!!! It just saved me $$$ to have my furnace repaired. My 8 yr old american standard 3 burner furnace started short cycling last year, so I thought it's the flame sensor and spend about $30 cad to order a new sensor. However, after installing the new sensor the problem did not go away. After watching your videos I tried to start the furnace with the burning chamber open and realised that the 3rd burner would not ignite most of the time. I tried cleaning orifices with plastic toothpick but still the problem did not go away. Only after watching this video I decided to remove the burners to have them cleaned up and found out the the ignition channels between the second and third burners were clogged. Cleaned up the ignition channels and the burners and put everything back and tadam now the furnace ignites 100% of the time. Also noticed the flame color of the 3rd burner has changed from yellow blue to pure blue!!! Thanks a lot for the educational videos! Keep up the good work!!!
I don't currently have a forced-air gas furnace where I live but I have had problems with furnaces that could be explained by a dirty burner. This video is very helpful and informative. Thank you.
It's nice that you are sharing this with homeowners who may or may not have any mechanical ability. I think that safety is paramount therefore it would be wise to shut the power first and the gas feed too. Gloves so they don't cut themselves on sharp edges and a dust mask. Also a small dust vac.for a final clean up..Just my two cents
Your tutorials are easy to understand...straight to the point and you focus on the issue. I appreciate you imparting your expertise on the common DIY'ers...also, I truly enjoy the jokes at the end of your videos!
Perfect! I cleaned my 5 burner furnace today and the problem with the 5th burner not coming on went away. This was shutting it down after 2 to 3 tries. Superb!
Issue: Trane XV90 with two red flashes, meaning lockout after too many attempts. Starting up, the igniter glowed, the gas started and ignited, but didn't "jump" to the other burners and subsequently the flame sensor was not satisfied and shut it down (I heard the pressure switch engage, so air intake wasn't the problem). Well, cleaned the flame sensor and that wasn't the entire problem. The fins on the burners had some rust on them (from a previous old water condensate leak). Cleaned that up so the flame could move from one side to the other, and all back to good. Pretty easy to take all of that apart and take the burners out. Great video, along with all of the other ones posted on Word of Advice here. Thank you!
Wow! I watched your video on the top furnace problems out of 315 service calls. I replaced the flame sensor. Only two burners were still lighting to the right. I cleaned the orifices several times, then, only one burner was lighting and I was really puzzled. I then, pulled out the burners like you said and I brushed the disc and the fins and blew them out. Mine is similar to yours. I took one out at a time so that I wouldn't get them mixed up or installed upside down. Man! They lit so fast! They didn't look that dirty. But they were clogged obviously. Looks as they say can be deceiving. It's amazing on how a little dirt can block that air-gas mixture. Thank you! Thank you! You are a great instructor.
Honestly, yet another amazing video from a generous TH-cam contributor -- thank you! I just serviced my furnace (just like yours except for 5 burners, sealed burner box, and also 20 years old!) -- and what I discovered was that the HVAC guy who's maintained the furnace for all 20 years of its life, and who just retired last year, did such an amazing job, there was very little for me to actually do! Can't wait to send him a note of appreciation. Thanks also for the heads up about the igniter -- I'm sure I would have ruined it without your word of caution!
Success!!! After a year of trying to figure out why my furnace repeatedly had to start 2 or 3 times before it would stay on and to the point where it was timing out on a regular basis, I found this video. Once I was noticed the last burner was not lighting, which is a long story of why I couldn't tell before, it led me to search for reason why and this was the best video on it. You are also an excellent instructor. Many thanks kind sir!
Only the first burner fired in my heater, tech came to check, said need to replace the control board at the cost of $450, I found your video and followed the steps to clean the burners, heater works perfectly now. Great help, really appreciate!!
The tech would have replaced the new board for you to get a job. He would have taken ur old board and kept it to sell to someone later down the road and pocketed that money. Tech do this a lot for side money. But you paid the bill all the way....a lot of crooked people in every line of work.
Thanks for all information, I used go school for this trade. After over 10 years don’t use it. I barely can’t remember much. With all video it help me a lot
I am printing out a QR code with a link to his TH-cam channel and putting it on the refrigerator door at my relatives' house because it is that valuable in learning and troubleshooting appliances! Thank you so much!
My furnace stopped working this morning. Found out that it won't pass flame from burner 2 to 3. Watched this video, cleaned up the burners and it's all working now. Thanks for the excellent instructions.
Fantastic video! So helpful to have the information needed to do important maintenance on our furnace that needs to be done more than once per year, but rarely gets done as often as necessary because product literature tells you only to have a technician perform the service, which costs hundreds of dollars for even a simple procedure. We could hear a couple of the burners light, but then the unit would shut off. After 3 tries, a fault showed on the thermostat, that just said Ignition Lockout, call Bryant. No one can come until February. With this video we fixed it ourselves. Thanks so much!
Finally your video resolve my furnace problem. Dirty and rusted burners and clogged transition channels. Furnace was cycling like mad, with 2 red flashes. Flame sensor was shutting it down. Thank you!
Only because you asked for a service technicians point of view, and because you've got the general public doing this, you may want to mention they should turn the power off and the gas off before proceeding. Joe Blow homeowner gets up and walks away because the phone rings and the furnace kicks on with the burners out.... You might also want to mention how to check the heat exchanger while they got the burners out and for areas that they can't see from the burner area. (I seen you had your power switch off but you forgot to mention these things.)
Awesome video!!!! Thank you so much for the great information. My brother-in-law and I cleaned and fixed our sensor problems based on your other videos. This was after an HVAC person came over and wrongly diagnosed our two broken furnaces and suggests replacing both for $10,000. Again, thank you for all of the incredible help!!!!
Thank you so much for this video! I was able to get my furnace back up and providing consistent heat just days before the daily highs dropped below freezing. You rule!
I'm here because I want to speak English and you speak very clear. In addition, I'm a burner technician in Colombia and the content of this video is so interesting.
Bueno, me avisas. Gracias Jorge.
Thank you! I began servicing my furnaces years ago because 2 furnace companies I called sent incompetent trainees without supervisors who gave up any testing and said “you need a new furnace”. Me mad as h___ so I learned and maintain and fix myself.
Glad you mentioned the flame colors. I have had customers get all excited because the flame has anything other than blue. Also watch the flame when the blower comes to see if the flutter or change color. If they do you gots da rubbels Roy
I just don't know what word(s) I should say besides " THANK YOU " I am going g to clean my furnace sooner get all the necessary toys , it's been 20 years , never been cleaned ( I did not know ) THANKS A BILLION !
my furnace has been failing to ignite for years, sometimes it goes no issues, sometimes it fails a couple times and then ignites. I always assumed it was a flame sensor. Cleaned the flame sensor but still same issue, have a new one coming on order. I then came across your video and took out my orifices and cleaned them. Later that night after a whole day of no failures i heard it start to fail to ignite again. That is when i came across this vieoe while laying in bed. I was so exited to see how easy it is to remove this in shot burners because i remember mine look just like use except they are housed in a combustion box, sealed so 6 screws to access. I wake up open my furnace up and WOW was i surprised. 6 screws to open the cover, 2 screws on each burner which are inaccessible even with a flexible angle drill attachment, 4 screws to remove the bracket that each burner is screwed two, but two of the screws are right up against the exterier furnace case so only accessible by removing an addition 8 very hard to reach screws to remove the entire combustion box, but then the gas valve needs to be disconnected from the gas supply, the orifice manifice needs to come out, so another 4 screws, and the intake venting needs to be disassembled. WHY!!!!!!! I ordered a very small ratchet 72 tooth, to try and get at the two screws attached to each burner times 4, so 8 screws. I know i can take them out, tediously, but i am concerned about getting them back in because the screws go in from the bottom, and i can only fit one hand inside the combustion box. Thanks for this video. I have tried cleaning them in place but the same issue, i even got one out using a combination wrench and boy wasw it tough to put it back. It is just my last burner that isn't lighting and tripping the flame sensor.I cleaned the last one and still missfire. i beleive it has to be the third burners ears has a blockage that intermittently blocks the flame from jumping over to the 4th burner.
Thanks many for share show how do . i will do my furnace burners cleaning . Why Heating service never cleaned my old 25 years old . i do myself every year and replace new filter every 1-2 months . Happy Holidays !
These are great videos man ! I know feel like I can attempt to clean my own burners. I just pray my burners are as easy to access and /or remove !! Thanks again !
And just because you spend alot of $$....doesnt mean you will get a tech that will do the job right and thoroughly. I had a service tech come out for seasonal maintenance years ago and he did almost nothing.....
Thanks for the video, it worked! No heat in December Northern IL from my 2 year old S9V2 e.1 furnace,. Cleaned up the burners and we're taking off the sweaters! (should have never replaced a perfectly good 20 year old furnace)
Thank you so very much for such an amazing detailed /specific video!!! I am a female that got extremely upset (annoyed was an understatement) with a professional that was suppose to fix my dryer... it was a complete waste of time & $$$. I spent time doing my own research and have repaired our washer & dryer... & my parents. Upright freezer, Fridge and now with your great 👍 videos furnace x 2. Thank you for taking the time and letting us viewers know what other specific furnace videos your have available. It was great to watch a detailed short video for 1 specific task!!! I'm subscribing 😁
You make an excellent video! I service my furnace myself every fall but have not cleaned the burners. After watching your video I included that in the annual routine. Oddly for a 20 year old furnace they were near spotless. But now it will be done every few years anyways. Thanks!
I didn't know the flame followed the wings. That is good to know and probably will come into play in the future. Thank you for the tip and all your videos.
Follow up news.......... I read some comments. I already knew to shut things off like electricity and gas. But Thanks to your video I spent literally less then a dollar and it took me about 15 minutes to fix and saved me 400 freaking dollars they wanted to charge me. I've been in finance and made a ton of money. But this is much better money. I think I may go back to school and earn a new trade at 51. Lol just kidding. I'm rich........
Great video. I have a 19 year old high efficiency ComfortMaker. We smelled gas outside near where the PVC flue pipes exit at near ground level. Gas company confirmed presence of NG. (Note if the flue was run through the roof, we would not have caught this!). Called a service tech and he determined that at least one of my burners was not lighting. We have 4 burners with the igniter located between the two center burners. The burners were so clogged with rust that the flame spreaders were blocked and the flame did not advance from the center burners, where the ignitor is located. Therefore, gas was injected into two of the burner chambers and not ignited. I am surprised that we didn't have combustion in the flue! It is troubling to me is that we do not have a flame sensors at both of the outside burners. But there is no flame sensor other than the one right at the igniter (and two flame roll out detectors). Tech said that we have a "smart gas valve" that is supposed to handle this, but doesn't. We will be checking these burners much more closely from now on!
Best videos of any kind. I would be curious as to how a badly clogged burner would perform. I, like some other lazy or ignorant people, have in the past gone many years without cleaning and not really knowing the effects.
Glad you find the videos useful! Very dirty burners impede the gas flow which results in a restriction in the gas flow. That messes with the air to gas proportions and causes the carbon monoxide emissions to go up, the furnace does not run as efficiently, and if the flames are slightly diverted from the middle - could damage the heat exchanger as well.
Thanks Jay, I really enjoy watching your videos, the way you explain things makes it easy to understand how and why and your answers are very honest, keep those cameras rolling, we need teachers like you, by the way you installed the last burner upside down (just my OCD) Thanks again
Well Done Jay! I have been in the business a long time and you are spot on with this video. Oh, by the way the joke at the end of the video was clean as well. I wish more videos were as professional as yours!!
@@WordofAdviceTV I checked my furnace after watched your video, mine is a Gibson 2-stage one, the burner housing is a one piece metal, no top bracket, it's one piece with some cutouts to let burners go through. The individual burners are screwed on to the housing. I unscrewed an easiest one that doesn't have igniter, no flame sensor, no rollout switch, but I still couldn't back it out because the cutout on the housing is too small while the burner front is a little too big. I guess the burners can only go out from the front(opposite to the orifice). The whole burner housing has to come out to access the individual burners. Also, mine the gas manifold and the gas valve are blocking the burner housing, I think I may need to remove the gas manifold screws, and the screws to hold the burner housing to the furnace body, then tilt the burner housing to a position to get the whole thing out. Anyways, it's quite hard to get access to my individual burners. As I don't have problem now, I don't want to spend a whole day to get them out, probably do it when I have to.:-)

A wonderful how to video, especially when it is cold outside and no heat. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
you saved me money with your vids, and avoided getting price gouged, thank you
Finally your video resolve my furnace problem.
Thank you for all the additional pointers! Much appreciated!
he did flip off the main power switch before he started - usually looks like a light switch,
@@santatigerclaus I mentioned I seen that he turned it off but did not mention it verbally was my comment.
How do you shut off the gas? I can flip the electrical switch but how do you shut off the gas?
@@robinarcus6705 follow the pipe into the furnace . You should see a shutoff valve.
He deliberately misdiagnosed your two furnaces. He wanted the $10,000.
Thank you so much for this video! I was able to get my furnace back up and providing consistent heat just days before the daily highs dropped below freezing. You rule!
Bro you're my go to for the past couple years. Mad respect and I appreciate you! It's cold over here and you've educated me well. Thank you.
Thank you, glad to hear the videos have been helpful! You're welcome, stay warm bro!
I'm here because I want to speak English and you speak very clear. In addition, I'm a burner technician in Colombia and the content of this video is so interesting.
Glad to hear the videos are interesting! :) Thank you for watching and commenting! May your learning of English be a lot faster than you expected!
Bueno, me avisas. Gracias Jorge.
My house isn't cold anymore and I saved money thanks to this video! 👍
Did this and now my furnace works again. Thank you good sir
I like this man's approach. NO scare tactics.....like NICK.
I just cleaned my burners and flame sensor, easy peasy. Thank you so much, you made it look easy and it was. Saved a service call.
Best video on youtube ever! no joke. my last burner has been giving me issues and this helps me to realize what i need to do to resolve it.
Yes, I've had quite a few customers question the flame colors before so I made sure to touch on that too.
Thank you for this. I followed your instructions exactly. Furnace runs great.
very useful videos, clear camera shots and excellent explanations! Thanks for posting these
Great video! You really break it down nicely and show very clear steps. Avoided a hefty maintenance bill for the cost of a brass brush!
Just love this guy Mr wonderful the honest furnace guy. Mr WONDERFUL.
These are great videos man ! I know feel like I can attempt to clean my own burners. I just pray my burners are as easy to access and /or remove !! Thanks again !
Thank you so much, this was very helpful and also for the videographer that did an amazing job.
Just want to say thank you for your videos that you post I have learned a lot from your advice keep up the good work
Excellent video, simple explanation of how to do furnace maintenance without having to call a service tech. and saving yourself a lot of money.
And just because you spend alot of $$....doesnt mean you will get a tech that will do the job right and thoroughly. I had a service tech come out for seasonal maintenance years ago and he did almost nothing.....
Learn how to do it yourself....it will be a much better job well done!!!!!
Thank you sir. I just finish cleaning the burner and now the heaters is working .
Wonderful! Glad to hear that, stay warm!
Thanks for the video, it worked!
No heat in December Northern IL from my 2 year old S9V2 e.1 furnace,. Cleaned up the burners and we're taking off the sweaters!
(should have never replaced a perfectly good 20 year old furnace)
Its amazing how fast they want to sell you a new furnace. My Goodman is 25 yrs old. Needed new blower motor but everything else is great
Thank you so very much for such an amazing detailed /specific video!!!
Excellent video instruction. Good work on script, action and camera shots. Very Professional and easy to follow and remember!
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing all these helpfully steps. It definitely saved me today!!!!
best instructor ever
Very informative, especially with the pictures for different burners. Thank you Jay.
You're welcome! Glad you found the video useful!
I just replaced my Furnace.Nice to see how to clean. Thanks for Sharing!
You're welcome! May the new furnace live twice as long as the old one!
Thank you for imparting your knowledge! I was able to fix my furnace. God bless!
Did an amazing step by step tutorial. Thanks
This was a fantastic video and you are an excellent instructor!
You are awesome bro. I’ll be doing this to my furnace before the cold season starts tomorrow here in GA. Thank you.
You make an excellent video! I service my furnace myself every fall but have not cleaned the burners. After watching your video I included that in the annual routine. Oddly for a 20 year old furnace they were near spotless. But now it will be done every few years anyways. Thanks!
Great job explaining and demonstrating the process.
I'd like to see you do that on a carrier high efficiency furnace. Removing burners from a carrier is my least favorite repair to make on a furnace.
Look at the thumbs up to thumbs down ratio!! Amazing. Thanks for the video and covering so many aspects of cleaning burners.
I didn't know the flame followed the wings. That is good to know and probably will come into play in the future. Thank you for the tip and all your videos.
Yeah, it's an easy thing to miss. Glad you are finding the videos useful, thanks for watching and commenting!
Never mind with my earlier question. Your video i followed to the t and its working great right now. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for the video Jay. It's very informative and helpful.
Thanks for all your advice. I’ve learned a lot from your videos! Keep it up.
You did a very good job explaining how the burners are supposed to work. Thanks for the joke.
This video just save me money. Thank you.
Thank you very much for your videos. I am very grateful for them.
Great job Jay - another excellent and well articulated video! Thank you.
Thank you! :) I appreciate you always watching and commenting!
Thanks! Excellent presentation.. Very well spoken,
"Word of Advice" rules. Thanks again.
You're awesome men thanks for share all you wisdom with us, you are the best.
Well done! Excellent tutorial. Thank you.
Nice, clear and simple.
@@WordofAdviceTV Thanks for the reply. Maybe your next video should be, Don't Be This Guy. (me)
@@mystique0417 Lol, "that guy" would probably encompass just about everyone who is not an HVAC tech... Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thorough and well articulated. Thanks
Thanks Jay, I really enjoy watching your videos, the way you explain things makes it easy to understand how and why and your answers are very honest, keep those cameras rolling, we need teachers like you, by the way you installed the last burner upside down (just my OCD) Thanks again
Hahaha did I really?? (on my furnace it doesn't matter but on some it does) Good catch! :) Thank you for watching and commenting!
Well Done Jay! I have been in the business a long time and you are spot on with this video. Oh, by the way the joke at the end of the video was clean as well. I wish more videos were as professional as yours!!
Very informative, very helpful! Thank you, appreciate you effort.
Glad to hear the video was helpful! Thank you for watching and commenting!

I checked my furnace after watched your video, mine is a Gibson 2-stage one, the burner housing is a one piece metal, no top bracket, it's one piece with some cutouts to let burners go through.
As I don't have problem now, I don't want to spend a whole day to get them out, probably do it when I have to.:-)
@yorkchen817 Oh boy.. Sounds like you have the bad style. I wouldn't be too enthusiastic about having to take all of that apart too so I understand how you feel. Haha no rush then ;) Some people never clean their burners and things seem alright. Stay warm!
Thank you! Cleaning the burners stopped the explosions when furnace starts. Much appreciated.
Thank you for this!! This was my exact issue, saved me from having to make a emergency service call in the middle of winter
Excellent instructional video. Thank you for your VALUABLE TIME.
So helpful Jay. Thank you for posting!
Did this, piece of cake. Your description was precise.
What a coincident, i just started cleaning my hvac unit this morning come to take a break and look on my phone and see this video just uploaded. Crazy
.
Wow, what's even more crazy is that you are the second person to say that!
@@WordofAdviceTV i had cleaned the return duct, a coil, changed filter and vacuum out all the dirt out the burner area and did a visual on the burners
You are going above and beyond :) Most people only replace the filter and that's their maintenance. (even that's often forgotten too)
Ronald that's because are phones spy on us! Also I have been doing a lot of maintenance this year (hvac service tech) this is a good video as usual!

Omg, you are awesome! After watching your videos I replaced my ignitor, cleaned my flame indicator, and cleaned the burners. Now I have glorious heat! Thank you! And I love the jokes!
Great info and so well explained
Thank you sir was just looking for ways to do this... I’m a professional now.....
Great delivery and content I will tackle this job tomorrow on my own furnace.
Thank you good Sir! excellent!
Great video, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for the video. I also had the same problem where my furnace would light some of the time. I cleaned the burners paying special attention to the wings and it lights every time!!
