I love that snufkin isn’t portrayed to be this perfect person. He’s kind and he loves his friend but he can be neglecting of moomin and let his own emotions get in the way of being there for others. He’s very focused on himself and the greatest lesson he could’ve experienced is when moomin left. Now he has to deal with longing and consider moomin’s feelings. Sometimes I don’t think snufkin deserves the unconditional love that moomin offers but I’m glad he has it.
I feel like in "November" the one scene where Snufkin wakes up in a panic is reminiscent of the season one dream sequence. In which it would be snufkin, once again, having to fear of Moomin forgetting about him and moving on. Though the creators once again have left it up to our imaginations to figure it out.

I always thought that Snufkin was upset in the volcano episode, because Moomintroll was angry at him for somewhat causing the eruption in the first place by bringing the last fire spirit to the volcano. I hope they eventually figure out they can travel together. It's more Snufkin who has to allow himself to let Moomin tag along and realize finding someone you can be alone with is amazing. Really love the videos thank you for all the hard work!
i think moomintroll needs to go on his own adventure... but of course he invites snufkin to come along because he understands what it’s like to be in his shoes lol ;)
@@Lil72722, I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner. Sometimes it's nice to have someone who does their own thing while you do yours; if your partner is a gamer per se and you a painter, you can both do those activities near each other while being independent. It's something I could see Snufkin looking for in a partner, someone who understands that some things are too personal or more relaxing alone. Moomintroll tends to struggle with that idea of being alone, but being alone together could be Snufkin playing his harmonica while Moomintroll writes independent projects done together. I hope this helps, sorry about the late reply!
@@sumsum3873 Definitely, Snufmin road trip is hopefully endgame! It's more for Moomintroll to learn how to, as Drawopinion but it, love with an open hand.
these moominvalley videos highkey make me super emotional :’) it’s just something about the relatability of snufkin’s fear or being trapped and moomintroll’s possessive and overbearing love + the queer undertones that just make my heart cry
same, I keep rewatching them and I tear up a little bit everytime. This story always fills my heart with joy, and I think seeing my favorite characters grow so much it's...comforting?
Moomin said that the Hobgoblin must really LOVE the ruby because it's similar to his love. Back then, he didn't see it as possession until Snufkin pointed it out. Indirectly hinting that Moomin's version of love must have felt possessive for the mumrik.
Several aspects of snufkins personality shows that he could potentially be afraid of love, as he can't keep up a connection with people, unless its someone who he likes a lot, such as the spirit
@@sirworran8385 I just wanna say for you to keep up with this masterpiece, because this is KEEPING ME ALIVE, thank you so much for this amazing piece of art ^^
Seeing the title alone made my heart ache a little. "The Art of Being Loved".That's beautiful and well chosen besides, and Moomin Valley as a whole is a very special creation. Bless Tove. Snufkin is an incredible character in literature.
Looking back at this season again, the 'plan' Snufkin was talking about puzzles me. They weren't hyping up a boss fight between him and the Hobgoblin (although that would have been pretty funny considering the Hobgoblin is a chill dude). Contrary to popular belief, Moomintroll is about as respectful and understanding of Snufkin's need to be alone as anyone can be, wishing him good health on his travels in 'Finn Family Moomintroll' and being there to support him when he needs it. I hope Snufkin at least acknowledges this and opens up a bit more. Or at least tell him about the 'plan'.
It occurs to me, while I haven't watched this rendition of moomin, perhaps the reason Snufkin acted differently to this flame spirit unlike the little kids is because this flame had a defined home, a place to go, a goal. (You do kinda touch on this too!) And snufkin felt enamored with having a place to belong, a home, so he was subconsciously paralleling his own yearning for a home....like how snufkin returns 'home' to moomin valley every spring. God I love these characters
I pray every night that in season 3 or potentially 4, Snufkin gets help with his fear of being forgotten and abandoned. The baby boy has been through so much.
As a person who is like Snufkin, Snufkin’s character growth in season three has really shown how both Moomintroll and Snufkin have matured. They fight, but they respect each other’s strengths and try to understand each other’s weaknesses. Instead of Snufkin being closed off in most ways, he shows more emotions around Moomintroll, including frustration, sadness, longing, and anger. In turn Moomintroll can start to understand Snufkin, and realize that even though he really pisses him off sometimes, Snufkin truly does care. And Moomintroll becomes more responsible with his own emotions towards Snufkin. I can’t wait to see their growth in season 4!!
I think Snufkin‘s plan with the Wizard had already been completed before moomin even knew it. Snufkin knows moomin is the master at bringing people in and in this case- has the same “love=possessive” trait that snufkin sees in the wizard (although less extreme). *thats* why snufkin does nothing and leaves. He knows (and states) moomin can handle it on his own but snufkin can’t as his love language is the opposite
There really needs to be a scene where Snufkin and Little My find out they are related and all of the other family drama. There really needs to be a whole thing about that.
First of all, oh my god I love your observations and connections! Secondly, the way I interpreted "November", was that the reason he could leave Moominvalley so easily was that he always knew that they'd be there, no matter when he came back. In his mind, Moominvalley was probably a little place of warmth that was frozen in time. A place he was familiar with and one he could always go back to. The thought of them leaving had never passed his mind. So, when the tables turned and he was finally in the position that Moomin was usually in, he realized just how much he needed the Moomins in his life. Despite them not always physically being there, they were always with him in his heart and mind. They were an important part of his life. Just as you said, he needed to learn to face his fears of not having enough freedom and to learn to find a balance between freedom and love. You could also say that the saying, “You never realise the value of something until it's gone-" could apply here as well. He is learning that the presence and love of the Moomins has a bigger impact on his life than he probably thought. He is learning that, despite him thinking he has absolutely no attachment to anything and is not dependent on anything, he needs the Moomins in his life as a sort of rock. He is learning that it is ok to depend on people sometimes because none of us are perfect. In then end, just because he is realizing that he actually needs them more than he thought, it doesn't mean he isn't independent and capable of taking care of himself. 👌🏼👍🏼 I hope this made sense! Sorry it's so long! (I'll add on if my mind thinks of something lol forgive me)
That’s exactly what I thought! I also think the characters in November (in the moomin home) represented a trait that snufkin possesses Order - ms. F , paternal kindness- mymble, imagination/missing the ones they love - toft , free spirit(which is the part he displays on the outside) - snufkin himself , depression/ philosophical reasoning- muskrat ,and admiration- hemulan. All of these characters disappear by the end except for toft for this is the emotion that is taking over snufkin. Because what’s most important thing to him right now is finding the moomins.
If this were the old series I was used to as a kid, I feel Snufkin leaving when the Hobgoblin issue was still unsolved would have been his way of saying that Moomin & pals have to figure it out themselves, that he won't always be there to help them. The solution being a lonely one in this case is meaning that he can't stick around because people will rely on him for advice, even if he might not have the help they want or seek. He wants for them to be independent and think of a solution on their own. The lonely one is him - but of course he's gonna be a bit cryptic about it But this is just how I'd see it myself~ Is just the kind of view on Snufkin I've developed since childhood I guess xD
24:05 This reminds me of when Snufkin said in Season 1: "The only thing you should fear is fear itself" (something along those lines at least). To not let fear control your actions or close yourself from the outside world. This part of the 'November' episode clearly wants to bring that message back. With Snufkin showing the housesitters that there is no monster and that there is no need to fear and hide away. I love this message ❤
can we talk about this: i’m not 100% sure that this is true but I heard somewhere that when Snufkin was little he was left (put in a basket on a river) by his parents (canonically mymble and joxter)
Tove was notorious for reinventing her own canon, but the idea that The Joxter was a sort of estranged father figure remained a constant! I wonder if the Moominvalley adaptation will touch on that subject...
I freaking love Snufkin and his boyfriend, I hope in season 3 they get more moments together but I don't think they will, there will probably be lots of pining tho. 👀
Making Season 3 gay would be so easy though. Just have Toffle ask what Moomintroll was like and have Snufkin respond with "he's... wonderful" or something like that.
I've loved and lost several Snufkin-types in my day, invariably for trying to hold on too tight. Four decades into life, I've finally learned my lesson, how to love deeply while always being willing to let go.
ever wanna talk about your feelings 70's Snufkin? no. I DO! I know 2019 Snufkin I'm sad... I know 2019 Snufkin i love how he gets shorter every big installment...
just want to remember everyone about the green light, when moomintroll is saying goodbye to snorkmaiden, that green light make things a little... weird... and when moomintroll goes with the boat, still is the green light somehow shining for him, and we know very well what green is associated with :)
I discovered Moomins one week ago exactly. I haven’t been exited about something like this in a long time. I love kids shows because I think it’s weird to watch shows that give you more problems than they solve. Some kids shows have an empty feeling, but I absolutely love Moomins because the world is alive and the characters seem like they could be real instead of just walking stereotypes. Everyday I wake up excited to watch more, and I’ve never felt this way about a show before! (I’m wactching the 90s one before I watch the new one btw) Sending love 🥰🥰🥰
Many many years in my youth I lived like Snufkin. I could not find soulmates in my relatives. I learned camping skills and always when situation was too much for me I escaped. It was TOUGH sometimes, in winter expesially. After years I found love. After being lonely many years I was surprised how easy it is to love and being loved. Love heals wounds of the past. But, off course it has to end. She let me free to find someone else. Dam, how complicated is life and love mostly. But, wondering in nature all year round gave me unforgettable moments. Smell off wet trees burning, melting ice sound on lake, birds arriving on spring...........
What I really really want to happen next season (and might just write a fic about) is like Snufkin slowly turning invisible while Moomins away, only for Moomin to come back and they have a really sweet moment, but Snufkin is still fading, albeit slower. But Snufkin doesn't want to leave Moomin, like how Moomin was, so they go on a big winter adventure together and have to confront their feelings as well as Snufkins nightmares and invisibility and guilt, and Moomins worries about driving Snufkin away and festering guilt of leaving him. (I just really want some invisible Snufkin okay 😂)
I’m surprised that no one (that I saw) mentioned the green light being a potential allusion to The Great Gatsby, where a green light symbolizes yearning a lost love from afar and wishing with all your might for it to return

I hope there's an analysis of season 3 someday. I've just finished season 2 and am catching up on these videos for that season but I'd love to come back after 3 and find another analysis vid like these. These are well written and well spoken :3
I love that they show us two extremes to what it is to love freely (or be free). Because when we are trying to grow and learn from life, we tend to go to the extremes, for example fixing the fear of rejection by rejecting everyone or by becoming very attached to everyone, but very few times we go to the middle which is to love freely and to not be afraid. The show has this two complete opposites, Moomin and Snufkin, and that's amazing because we can see both journeys, we can see how both of them reach the "middle" even when they are in two different positions. I love this because I think it helps us as viewers to identify with whoever we do, maybe even both, and know that no extreme is the way to go, and then show us what we could do to go to this middle depending in which one we are. As always I love your videos and I'm suuuper thankful you make them!
I love your videos so much, just hearing the phrase "Once again I want to talk about Moominvalley" filled me with such a deep happiness, thank you so much for what you do >u
Also, Snufkin rushing off to find out the truth about a magical object reminds me of another certain character from J.R.R. Tolkien's work, that is known for wearing a pointy hat and coming and going as he wants. Snufkin is Gandalf. Change my mind. It really is so similiar to Gandalf searching for the truth about the ring. And the hat even belongs to an evil wizard that searches for something all his live, quite similiar to Sauron searching for the ring. The mountain home of the Hobgoblin even reminds me of the volcano where the ring was made or Souron's tower. Only it turns out the Hobgoblin is a totally chill dude. But I liked the Hobgoblin and Groke plots from the 90s cartoon much better. With the seashell that Moomin was going to give to Snorkmaiden being given to the Groke, and the Hobgoblin granting the wish for a second ruby, because he can only grant the wishes of others, not his own. It's funny to see Sniff being given empathy, but he otherwise feels even more two dimensional in this adaptation. It isn't even shown where he lives or who his parents are etc. But there are a lot more episodes to come, so maybe he will get at least a few more moments. I really miss Stinky, too. It is pretty much confirmed that the Snork will come back in the next season, and hopefully we will finally see Snorkmaiden's house, too. It's sad that the Witch and Alicia most certainly won't make an appearance, since they aren't in any of the original books. It's amazing how well these characters fit though, concidering they were only created for the cartoon. But I really don't care much for the Muskrat, since he doesn't add much and is also pretty two dimensional. I really miss the Hemulen from the 90s anime though. He had some nice plotlines and quite some depth to him. It great that we got to see more of the Mymble though. It totally makes up for the Mymbles daughter not being present. I've read that the last season that wasn't based on the books at all wasn't as good, but I haven't been able to find a place to watch it yet. Hard to find english subtitles, as it was never dubbed to english. I hope we get to find out next season what Snufkin was doing after leaving the valley early in season two.
I will absolutely *not* change your mind; I've bingewatched the lotr movies recently and I couldn't stop thinking about how the start of the 1st movie is basically a moomin mood
this has been in my watch later for at least two years and even though I never finished this show I decided to watch this now and. god. yeah this is a really good and heartwarming video fantastic work
It’s funny how Moomintroll and Snufkin represent almost two extremes between possessiveness and aloofness, and to become more complete people, they must head towards the opposite extreme to find a happy middle ground.
Generally it´s much easier to love than being loved. Back then I didn´t liked Snufkin that much. Later on I found out that I didn´t understand him and now he´s closer to me more than I would though. Might watch this series, it seems pretty good!
I only discovered this series last year, and I've only seen some of the 90s series, but I feel safe in saying Snufkin is easily my favorite character. Aside from the fact he's so independent and usually carefree, he's also presented as fairly wise and pragmatic a lot of the time.
Your alaisis: beautiful everything makes sense this is the character story and soon in Rachel EP they get into that conclusion Mine: .....moomin and snufkin are gay for each other they just dont know now to love each other

These are my comfort video essays, and I keep coming back to them even years later. I really love the world of Moomin and I love the way you talk about it.
I absolutely love the Moomins and Moomin content, so I’ve been meaning to watch the 2019 series for a while now, but it’s also something I’ve become apprehensive about. The books and the 90’s show are just so calm and idealistic, you sort of know what you’re going to get with them, and that it’s always going to work out fine. Not hat there’s nothing to learn or gain from them (there’s quite a bit) but they’ve never seemed to include drastic stakes or any at all really and I think I’d have trouble adjusting to the nature of the most modern iteration. I’m honestly not sure I’d be able to cope with the plotlines described very well or if it could comfort me in the same way the others do judging by the types of themes it explores. It’d just make me hurt. I’ve been watching your videos recently though and it’s a nice way to indulge in the series from afar, although I won’t lie I was getting emotional by the end of this one. The way you analyze and describe the happenings of the story is just great and very comprehensive!

i think moomintroll needs to go on his own adventure... but of course he invites snufkin to come along because he understands what it’s like to be in his shoes lol ;)

K but if Snufkin doesn't hug Moomintroll on the pier like how Moomintroll wanted to hug him in the 3rd episode then WHAT IS THE POINT
What is the PURPOSE
It's bound to happen. I can see Moomin being like "who are you and what have you done with Snufkin?" and then they hug again.

these moominvalley videos highkey make me super emotional :’) it’s just something about the relatability of snufkin’s fear or being trapped and moomintroll’s possessive and overbearing love + the queer undertones that just make my heart cry
same, I keep rewatching them and I tear up a little bit everytime.
Ok, I can't wait for Season 3. Seriously.

Seeing the title alone made my heart ache a little. "The Art of Being Loved".That's beautiful and well chosen besides, and Moomin Valley as a whole is a very special creation. Bless Tove. Snufkin is an incredible character in literature.
Snufkin: I MISS MY BOYFRIEND SO MUCH
(that goddamn cliffhanger)
How do you accidentally break a ruby? It's a nine on the moh's scale lol
100% like ratio: perfectly balanced, as all things should be
Did I just bingewatch Moominvalley just so I could watch this video?
Yes. yes, I did.
He knows (and states) moomin can handle it on his own but snufkin can’t as his love language is the opposite
its so weird but cool when people talk about moomin in like an analysis way lol
it's good media and it deserves attention! :D

A 31-minute long video essay on why Moomintroll and Snufkin are in love with each other
Professional
Fun fact: the light seen at the end of november isnt green, implying that isnt moomin coming back but maybe the family (and the fisherman?
who knows!
don't do this to me- if Moomin isn't there I'll throw my computer out the window /j
It wasn’t until 26:40 that I realized that Snufkin was right next to his own mother!
omg true
I hope this made sense! Sorry it's so long!
(I'll add on if my mind thinks of something lol forgive me)
That’s exactly what I thought! I also think the characters in November (in the moomin home) represented a trait that snufkin possesses
Order - ms.
The lonely one is him - but of course he's gonna be a bit cryptic about it
But this is just how I'd see it myself~ Is just the kind of view on Snufkin I've developed since childhood I guess xD
*”0 dislikes”* it is as the world should be
Within 2 weeks there are 8 new dislikes.
Then it’s time to go on a crusade

(I’m wactching the 90s one before I watch the new one btw)

These moominvalley analyses really do be hitting me right in the feels, huh?
I miss your moomin videos so much. I still hope for an analysis on season 3, but most of all I hope you are doing great
Many many years in my youth I lived like Snufkin. Smell off wet trees burning, melting ice sound on lake, birds arriving on spring...........
alternate title: snufkin submits to the mortifying ordeal of being known
What I really really want to happen next season (and might just write a fic about) is like Snufkin slowly turning invisible while Moomins away, only for Moomin to come back and they have a really sweet moment, but Snufkin is still fading, albeit slower. But Snufkin doesn't want to leave Moomin, like how Moomin was, so they go on a big winter adventure together and have to confront their feelings as well as Snufkins nightmares and invisibility and guilt, and Moomins worries about driving Snufkin away and festering guilt of leaving him.
(I just really want some invisible Snufkin okay 😂)

“It was just winter itself, seen through the terrified eyes of loneliness”

I had no idea that this series had such deep characterization!!
I think Snufkin was so upset bc he knew he would never see the spirit again, but he will see moomin again

I only discovered this series last year, and I've only seen some of the 90s series, but I feel safe in saying Snufkin is easily my favorite character. Aside from the fact he's so independent and usually carefree, he's also presented as fairly wise and pragmatic a lot of the time.

Never stop talking about Moominvalley!
I have never seen any of the shows or read any of the books but Moominvalley gives me serious animal crossing vibes.
For moominvalley in November, the book hit a lot harder than the episode for me
I absolutely love the Moomins and Moomin content, so I’ve been meaning to watch the 2019 series for a while now, but it’s also something I’ve become apprehensive about.
