Hope you enjoyed today's video! A massive thank you to everyone for giving me the time and space to process and take care of the issues happening with my dog. She is my child and I love her so much. She is ok for the moment but the future is not looking so good for her. Without going into too much detail she has an aggressive cancer and doesn't have too long left with us. We have done eveything we can to make her comfortable and now it's a matter of making her limited time with us even more special. So thank you xx
So sorry to hear this awful news - I have a toy poodle and I can't imagine how me and my wife would cope if anything happened to her. Animals bring incredible light into our lives so sending my best wishes.
just found your channel! some really great content and a nice honest review of the mattebox! just puchased one today for gimbal use and waiting on delivery, you have earned yourself another youtube/insta follower!
I'm based around photo lenses and screw on filters. Someday I'd love to be using cinema lenses and 4x5.6 filters. In the mean time though, the Crimson Engine guy had a great observation - when using a matte box that rail mounts, and has adapters, you can screw your screw-on filters to the adapter, and just slide the matte box back to butt up against the lens. You might need to use a nicker to get a good light block, but doing this uses less expensive filters and you can swap lenses and leave the filters in place. If you know you're not going to swap lenses often (or at all) for a shoot, then this looks like a great option, particularly if you can use one or more screw-on filters. I'm very sorry to hear about your dog's illness. It's great when you come out with videos regularly, but no one should expect you to do so or complain, particularly if you have more important things to do like this.
Absolutely! Cheapest way to block that light is probably a black sock cut at the foot end and pulled around the lens. Thank you so much. Just taking this all day by day. I appreciate your understanding.
Thanks for this review! Most helpful I've seen as we were considering this solution for single filters on some of our DSLR lenses. Def not a pro solution, but hopefully something to work in a pinch or for travel shoots.
4x5.65'' and the brand of this one is NiSi. It's their IRND filter (pretty sure it was 0.6ND). I don't own that filter it was borrowed for the video. ☺️
Essentially a expensive sun shade. I love that you said it! I am thinking to get it and get nisi (4x5.65)polarizer. Is it going to introduce some weird colors or something when combined with VND screw on under the polarizer? I am filming a lot of water so polarizer would be good think to have, but big bulky mattebox is not something I want to deal with.
Great review Felicity...as always. Not sure how a lens with a clamp on Matte Box would would handle windy conditions, think that's where rails would work better.
Suprisingly well! Typical windy conditions should be absolutely no issue at all. I think the main issue with them falling off would come from not getting it securely on the lens (i.e putting it on on an angle or not tightening it correctly) or it getting a significant bump by accident. But yes, rail mounted systems are much more secure.
thanks for sharing. if you already have an nd filter on your lens you wond be able to mount the adaper ring on the lens anymore? the 4x5.65 filters are really expensive and tbh i am purchasing the matte box just to make my camera look more professional to make the clients feel better.
Ah cool! So if it's a threaded front to the lens (meaning you can put circular screw on filters on there) then that should work however the 62mm adapter doesn't come with the kit, it's a separate purchase, from what I can see it's $7 for the adapter. You should be able to find all that on the Tilta website 😊👍
Love it, I got an email about the mini matte box and was very interested in it but I already have all my circular filters and really it would just be a lens hood... I feel like if I'm going to get 4x5.65 filters I would get something with drop ins anyway but it does look like a great option if your just starting out
I like my wooden camera zip box pro as you can use two filters + a 138mm round filter in the back - it is more expensive but i’m using two filters all the time. what “pro” matte box would you recommend? might get the new bright tangerine misfit kick in the future
Oh yeah!! I love Wooden Camera stuff. So nice. I did a video a while back on ND filters and why you need them. But I haven't done one specifically about just filters for film. Will have to write something up and head over to my local gear house. 👍👍
thx for sharing your experience but there are more downside when it comes to the position of the filter. filters should be mounted as close as possible to the lense for reducing flares, reflections and dust. and the adapters won't match on 114mm cine lenses
You'll be looking for 4x5.65 filters. They're rectangular shaped filters. Here's a few options! NiSi - nisifilters.com.au/category/nisi-cinema-filters/4x5-65/ Tiffen: tiffen.com/collections/neutral-density Search for 4x5.65 filters and you'll find some. :)
I haven't personally tried a 4x4 on there but that should be possible considering the vertical dimension being 4" but you may have to use tape or something else to just hold it centered to the lens and also use matte tape to cut light spill from the sides.
Hello Felicia! Great video thank you so much. Did I hear you correctly? - aside from the slide in 4x5 filter holder, you can screw in a filter - Can you screw the filter into the front of the adapter? Thing is, I already have a 4x5 ND, Pro Mist, plus other 82mm filters and would like to use both - SO, for instance, an 82mm Pro Mist into the 82mm adapter, plus a 4x5 ND. Then in theory, I could get step up rings for my smaller lenses to go onto the Tilta adapter. I have reached out to Tilta but their answers are a little cryptic :) Does that make sense? Anyways - thank you - love your work. Best regards, Jason
Just saw your email and will respond there today ☺️ short answer is you can screw it into the back if it is a stackable filter as in screw it onto the lens then screw the adapter to that. As for the front, according to their manual you can BUT it's not an 82mm thread from what I can tell and I don't have any other sized filters to see what it is. Tilta also don't have any info about what size it is either which is frustrating, especially since it clearly displays in the diagram in the instructions that you can.
Matte Boxes were invented to keep the front element of the lens in shade... Did you find any flaring or reflection issues with having the filter out front rather then shaded as it would be in a traditional design? That potential for scratching would certainly make most 1AC's hesitate, but when you need a Matte Box for a crash cam or where space is limited, or for light weight, such as filming sports, this would be a good choice.
No real issues in my usage. Although it will definitely pose some sort of issue especially if you're not using the top flap. Would be awesome to have a matte system to help cut glare.
How would I be able to efficiently use Filters when I also clamp on the matte box? I'd like to have this mattebox, but I also want to use a VND filter and a halation filter as well on my ordered Panasonic S5.
It's strange actually. The documentation that comes with the matte box states that you can attach a filter behind or in front of the adapter ring. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get a filter infront of the adapter ring. There's also not a lot of detail provided by Tilta about how this works and a few others in the comments have expressed the same thoughts and confusion. Straight filters are much easier to attach to the back of the adapter obviously as long as they are stackable with a standard thread on their front. As for variables, it would be a little difficult to have the weight of the matte box on front of a spinning variable filter so it would HAVE to be infront of the adapter... If we could only work out how that works. It's so strange because those diagrams in the manual suggest that it's totally possible. Sorry I can't give you much of an answer there!
I wasn't able to screw on my Gobe 82mm variable ND filter to the 82mm adapter ring because the filter is actually a bit larger so it can't reach the threads on the ring. Do you have any recommendations for an 82mm variable ND that would fit? Or a workaround?
Huh! I just pulled out my variable to check that out and wow! I had no idea and can't really understand why the thread size would be different. How odd. I've been using GOBE's straight NDs instead of the variable with no issue but I'm honestly at a loss as to why that wouldn't work with a variable. I'll have to try get my hands on some other brands and take a look. My 82mm Hoya Circular Polariser works but unsure about other Vari ND filters. Thank you for bringing this to my attention!
@@flickcine I know right?! I was really disappointed. Might have to get straight ND's then.. or a 77mm variable ND and use a step down ring, or use a step down and then a step back up to 82 to have enough clearance.. a lot of hassle though.. surprised Tilta didn't take this into account. Thank you for the reply :)
@@jonfraserdop So while I was pulling out my gear to take a look, I sent a message off to a friend who has a different vari ND and the same Tilta MB. He says that most variable NDs don't have a thread on the front meaning they aren't stackable from the front so the adapter won't attach because there is nothing for it to attach to. You could use a vari ND filter on the inside thread on the other side of the adapter ring BUT that thread size is not 82mm, it looks like it might be a step down. Not ideal :/
Excellent video! Very well informed and straight to the point. Question about the round filter that would go on the inside of the matte box, is it big enough to fit a filter that threads 77mm but increases to 86mm?
I only have 82mm filters unfortunately so I haven't been able to test out this one. There doesn't seem to be any details in the instructions either. 🤔 Sorry I can't really help you there!

Felicia Smith thank you for going far and beyond. So it reads that the outer diameter of the circular filter need to have an outside diameter of 85mm or less. The filter I have is the SLR Magic Vari ND+CPL and the slide that mounts to my lens is 77mm and the other side of that filter is 86mm so according to Tilta it is 1mm to big.

The matte box comes with adapter rings that you screw onto the front of the lens before attaching the matte box itself. So you just use the appropriate sized adapter ring and screw it onto the front of the lens.
