This review was done in 2021! I'm getting in to filming now after years of still photography and having to land into this priceless information about Tilta was the best thing. My dilemma was to choose between small rig or Tilta ! From this comprehensive review no doubt I'm ordering Tilta Mirage matte box
totally agree with you ! The products are epic, but also how Adam introduces them is epic! Pretty amazing! I would love to hang out with Adam to learn... Would be awesome to be the bestboy Peter of the BESTBOY ADAM :D
This is one of those accessories, that I don't need, but it is such a good device that I want to buy it anyway to, at least, support the innovation :) Thank you for this review!
You're a gun. Cheers bro. As usual comprehensive. Thanks for taking the time to inform us all. We appreciate you. I think I am going to get this matte box now!
It's an excellent review of the Tilta Mirage Mattebox. In addition to that, may I ask if you are using the Siriu anamorphic lens on an MFT body? I'm quite amazed at how this individual managed to use the Siriu anamorphic lens on the 6K Pro camera.
Hi, thanks for your very interesting review. To avoid too much color shift with VNDs, I use a Kase Clip ND8 filter and when I use a VND, it limits a lot the color shift and also the light reflection because I don't use the VND to its maximum. The X pattern is also significantly reduced with my Sony FE 20mm and 24mm lenses. I haven't found a better solution at the moment, other than using ND filters alone. It's the same for videos, now I use a Kase Mist (Dream) Clip In filter in front of the Sony sensor (equivalent between 1/8 and 1/4 Polar pro). I get a really nice result.
The only thing I don’t like about it is that the adapters for large format filters just clamp onto the front. Same as the mini matte box they make, which puts it right in glare and streakville. Wish they had put it into the back…. I am not selling my expensive filters. This is a nice box tho. And I will pick one up. I hope the Vaxis filters are good because I’ve found most of their glass products to suck.
Thanks for awesome review! Using Polarpro basecamp with Nucleus M for CP with Float only 4 month and now this dream matte box!! I must consider this when weight issue comes up for my gimbal.
Great review man! So when shooting on wider lenses, how many max stops of ND can you get before the X ring shows up? Maybe compared to the polar pros 2-5 and 6-9..for wider lens is it better to go with the polar pro or the tilta?
Hi Adam and family! Good to see you are well! I often think that Tilta are the 'pro' version of the things you make yourself. You seem to have a similar ethos to one another. I feel like you could do consulting work for them! It's so nice to be able to have a variable ND on a control like that. I got the Weeble S transmission package, and whilst I love being able to use my iPhone on the gimbal to give me more control and angle options, unfortunately I cannot use the follow focus motor function as my lenses are fly-by-wire micro four thirds. Maybe someday I will be able to afford a speedbooster and EF glass!
Thanks for the video, Can you use the VND filter and one of the specialty filters at the same time? In other words are there 2 filters slots for the round filters? Thank you. And at 9:24 what app were you using to monitor your camera?
You can use the VND if you get the stack mount and add it to the front, I did this but I get vignetting wider than 30mm so just be careful. You can still add a 4x5 filter to the front. And the app looks like the Raven Eye from Ronin but I could be wrong.
Thanks for this presentation ! The problem with variable NDs is that since it's a couple a polarizers, it changes the light polarisarion, so light reflection, when rotated in capture. Do you know it the whole variable ND could be turned to keep control of the polarization ?
Hello Adam, i love your videos and i am always impressed how you Setup your gimbal with such payload like the BMPCC 6k with the heavy DZO Zoom Lenses with all the accessories. It there a possibility to get a setup video how you do it? I am always struggling how to set up the weight in a way that the arms don't get blocked.
Great video Adam, I wonder if it’s possible to also still use screw-in filters with this setup. It was possible with Tiltas Mini Matte Box to use Screw in Filters on the lens even when using the step-up rings .With this new Step-up ring design I’m not sure if that would still work. Could you please check?
Can you make a video about your set up please? I also have the Bmpcc 6k pro with pictor zoom lenses. But I have the zhiyun crane 3s which seems to have some issues with vibration. How well does DJI RS 2 work with your set up?
Thanks for the useful information. I have a sel1224g. sel1224g has no filter groove so I can't use ND filters. Have you verified if this mattebox can be used with sel1224g?
Unrelated to this video but I think you should try doing an experimental rig where you attempt to built out a DJI RS2 into a poor man's Ronin 4D. I've been trying to build mine into a similar form factor for a while now and I'd be interested to see what you come up with
Image being able to use a VND instead of ISO for native auto-exposure on your camera! If Tilta can work out how to control the motorised VND using the camera's exposure value, so it maintains consistent exposure by increasing or decreases the ND, that would be INSANE!
What step up ring did you use on the laowa 7.5 mm? I'm afraid to get vignette when using my 49mm to 52mm step-up ring and then add another one. Thanks for answering!
Have you noticed any barrel vignetting when using the stack adapter to mount two 95mm circular filters? I use the Sony S3/A1 and the GM 24-70 as my main run and gun and notice anything wider than 30mm I get heavy vignetting around the corner edges, of course the “solution” is to just zoom to 35mm and ignore it, but is that right? Should you see anything or did I mount it wrong lol
fantastic info & video. Thanks so much for that! Please share with us the supporting system for your glidecam. I am searching something like this for my DJI Ronin RS2. Very interesting
Question: does the VND works good on bmpcc6k meaning in color, do it not have any Infrared problems in the blacks/shadows? I used to use IRnd Filters on my bmpcc6k and wondering is it built in or do you not see that problem in the VND
If ur talking about the nucleus motor use a higher voltage rather than the 5v micro usb port it comes with. 12v from V-mount Battery shouldn't be good enough ( use a Dtap to Micro ubs with higher voltage than 5v)
And what about the quality of the filter? Is there cross vignetting, color shift, and blurring? Many filters are guilty of this. We want to see tests to be sure of the purchase, Adam. Thanks for video!
I'm a bit sceptical myself, i know other companies are doing similar things like tilta are, but for now I'm just sticking to my N.D 0.3 glass, polarizer and Pro mist filters.
@@VIPAH what? speaking like an adult please, typing with keyboard said others is liar with what proof? with your mouth without any testing ? ridiculous.
your review is super helpful and great, but i have problem with V-ND when it set to the clear its not always 100% clear and leave a little bit does it do with this one too? ok whow , after buying many matte box, and also got myself the Tilta Mini Matte Box MB-T15, and now this omg gonna find myself with 4matteboxes
Awesome. I was about to pull the trigger on a NiSi C5, but this looks to be more convenient with the wireless ND controller, and the option to mount the matte box on rails. I heard NiSi Vari ND true color is the best, but it's also only 5 stops. How _off_ is the Tilta ND color shift?
Do you know what protocol the Tilta Nucleus Nano Adapter is using? I want to create an AUto Focus for manual cine lenses using a Raspberry Pi with a stereo camera
Is that Blackmagic 6k pro? Would you please share some details about your setup? I am trying to get the tilta and balance everything on my ronin rs - a have an ssd drive at the top, and need to add a microphone as well - was considering rode wireless go... I see you also have a cage here with a massive dzo. Do you think I could also get tilta cage for my 6 k pro and it would handle everything together? I am going to use id with a dummy battery and a cable to powerbank in my pocket.
Wonderful but would've love to see more direct VND color reproduction quality vs PolarPro Basecamp. Buying it anyway as I struggle between 5-7 stops during midday which means jumping from 2-5 VND to 6-9 VND back and forth. Also ND's are dirt cheap on this mattebox vs $200 each for PP basecamp. BUT we need in-depth comparison between all as I already own the PP basecamp and it might end up being exclusive to 200-600mm G lens, assuming this doesn't fit it.
I’m currently using three using the stack adapter for the 95mm, but I get barrel vignetting wider than 30mm, I also purchased the 95mm dual filter drop in, so I’m using the VND in the one slot, a pro mist and streak in the second slot, and I guess technically I could still use a 4x5 in the front if I wanted.
Are you comfortable mounting it on that Leica R directly or do you use the rod system for those lenses? And does the variNd show any colour shift to you? Thanks for the great reviews.
Thx for the review. Got my Mirage yesterday. One question regarding the vND filter. Mine is quite noisy when I rotate it manually. I'm afraid I won't be able to use with a on-cam microphone. Is this normal or have I got a broken unit? Thx
Well done and thank you for your fabulous work BestBoy Adam ;) In your opinion, is it possible to place the Ronin RS2 Pro folowfocus motor on the Nucleus Nano Motor adapter supplied in the MB-T16-A kit to control the variable ND? Do the dimensions and notches of the wheel allow it? Thanks to you
why didn't they put some side flag to control the light. Its as if they have thought about everything except some obvious thing. I can understand it might be too heavy for a front lenses but as they supply the rail attachment it not a problem.
Can you do a video on your blackmagic DZO set up on the float? I have the same set up on a tripod but I've only used my A7 on my float because I thought that set up would break my RS2!
From my experience, RS2 can handle pretty much anything as long as it's balanced correctly. I've put a ursa with a b4 lens on it and it was able to handle that without a problem.
Shame they havent thought it completely through. If you use the vND, you cant use another one of the new drop in effects filters because the matte box only has one slot. would gladly have taken 5mm more depth to put a second filter, like a pro mist, into the matte box. of course, depending on the lens you can use a screw on type one and than attach the matte box onto it, or fall back to the big and heavy 4x5.65 ones, but a second slot would have been easier/cheaper/lighter.
This review is going to sell a lot of Tilta Matte boxes! 👏🏾🙏🏾
and lots of vaxis vfx filters
For sure! 😀
hopefully the prices getting lower..
Thanks for the shoutout Adam! 🙌
9:24 also eliminating camera shake that would otherwise occur from manually adjusting the VND! Brilliant!

Thats amazing! Please make a Video about the setup of your pictor Zooms on the RS2. Absolute Crazy but smooth build. Amazing to see

Hi this is a great review. Would a xeen lens fit this Matt box?
