Hi everyone, I hope you enjoyed this episode! I realize I didn't go over plates for Puerto Rico, DC, etc - I will cover those in a separate episode coming soon. Thanks for watching as always! PS - join the new USA Geo Discord server: discord.gg/W3jDuqG It's open to anyone worldwide who's interested in USA GeoGuessr!
You can't approach USA like Europe. In the land of advertising, area codes are king. Also, license plates change here fairly frequently. Texas and Tennessee just changed styles this year.
I work as a bank teller in Montana, and see lots of plates through the drive through. We have 5-6 default plates and over 300 optional plates, which are common due to the low price. I wouldn’t rely on plates to positively identify Montana, only to eliminate other options. Just my $0.02.
Hey, fellow American geoguessr here. Thanks for the video- there's not a lot of USA content out there for geoguessr. Some things I've found that weren't mentioned: - There are a LOT of city-specific symbols on street signs. Charlotte has a crown, Denver has the weird "A", etc. - Might just be my experience, but in Texas, the lone star symbol is a lot more common than the state flag - Aldi/Safeway/etc.. can tell you just as much about your region as trees can. - Trash Cans almost always say "Property of XXX City" or "XXX State". Hope for trash day. - School buses are easier to spot than post offices and will often narrow it down to county. Police stations too. - You can narrow down the midwest fields in you can distinguish between corn fields and rice fields. Rice fields mean Arkansas and south. Corn fields mean Kansas and north. - Palm Trees/Cycads = California / Florida almost always (even though SC state flag has a palm tree). - Magnolia Grandiflora is also an easy tree to spot- often planted in yards- usually means east coast - The MI/MN/WI region looks a LOT like the SC/GA region and some parts of Colorado. - Agave plants mean Southwest Also, I memorize area codes by pneumonic. 201 = BoA and I imagine a feather boa around Jersey City. 202 = Bob goes to Washington DC. 203 = BOC aka Bottom of Connecticut, New Haven. Etc... P.S. The pines you refer to are White Pines, and I look for the wagon wheel orientation of the branches. It almost looks structures as opposed to the Pinus ponderosas and variations in the Rockies and waaaay different than the Pacific Northwest cypruses and yews.
Woah dude this video is so well put together Also thanks im terrible at american license plates i usually end up looking for highway signs in us state streaks for 30 mins :')
"i usually end up looking for highway signs in us state streaks for 30 mins :')" good to know someone is "living my life" lol :) im happy when it is "only" 30 minutes ... :p
The Georgia plate isn't just a pre 2012 vs post 2012 thing. You can choose between the 2 designs when getting a new plate as of this year when I did it.
The black and yellow California plates are actually a vanity plate option, not just an old one. Even your example photo with a fairly new Honda Pilot, wouldn’t be surprised if it had a vanity plate like “R3KIDS” or something silly
if someone told me that half a year ago that in six months ill be watching a vid about how to distinguse blurred us plates ill be laughing my ass off, but there i am
Michigan got a lot more interesting now that they’re introducing the retro plates. Now there’s the blue and yellow Water-Winter Wonderland, the green and white Water Wonderland, and coming soon the blue and white Great Lakes, the black and white Great Lakes, and the red white and blue bicentennial plate is coming back too.
eventhougth i dont think i will have the courage to learn all that ... thanks so much for that video!!! obviously it surely didnt take 5 minutes to do it .. amazing job ! im still hoping and waiting for that " landscapes by states" video explanation that u promise in ur basic geoguesser tip video . not at all pushing u of course !! considering how complete and precise u want to be this will probably take a lot of ur time also !!! thanks again
I hated the NY Empire gold plates and switched to the Olympic spirit plate. I finally got a standard plate when we switched to the new Excelsior plate in 2020. Many NYers have special image plates because the gold was pretty ugly on dark-colored cars. The good thing is that most of the close to 50 different image plates are like the Empire Gold plate but with a white background and blue borders. You can recognize them by the blue border on top, and there will be an image on the left side of the plate. But, the image depends on the type of organization you choose to support (Olympic symbol, autism awareness symbol, sports team, etc.)
Iowa announced a surcharged plate, black background, no graphics and plain letters, still has county identity in the bottom center, and can be ordered personalized.
As a Hoosier, I can say that I rarely see the newly issues plates around. By far, the most common one is the In God We Trust plate, its everywhere. The bicentennial one though, the one I have, is very common as well, although I would say a little less so. Indiana is quite difficult to guess in this game, as no one ever really considers it, and it is just so plain looking. Only reason I consider Indiana a lot is because I live here, and I think so many other states can look like Indiana lol
Tennessee has changed it's plate. Our plate is now blue with the symbol on the state flag in the middle and "In God We Trust" surrounding it (there is also a version without "In God we Trust"). It also has "Tennessee the Volunteer State" surrounded by the state outline
Back in 2019 I uploaded some daily challenge games, but I was way worse at the game and that was before GeoGuessr updated their UI lol. I'll definitely post another one sometime soon!
Oregon also has a license plate that features crater lake and is mostly blue. I'm not sure if they still issue them out but they're pretty common to see on cars
hawaii is probably the easiest state to guess just because the suns position in the sky. I feel like the sun is always straight overhead on streetview. oh yeah don't forget that like 75% of the cars in hawaii are toyota tacomas too. Pretty sure all hawaii cams are gen 2 and gen 4 if I'm not mistaken
I mean, there's also the distinctive houses on slopes and tropical foliage and the mountain rising over Honolulu that looks like nothing anything in the entire continental USA. But also the sun.
I'm having quite a large problem trying to learn these plates maybe the Delaware or New jersey plate are recognizable for me but the vast majority arent is there any ideas I can try?
? You still see them all the time. You aren't forced to switch to the new plate in NY, they tried to force everyone to do it but there was a massive revolt over it so they shut the idea down. The Empire Blue, Empire Gold, and Excelsior plates are all still valid in NY
wow... would love to see ImageNet or some other deep neural network's performance on classifying these blurred plates. I think some pro GeoGuessr's might be more accurate tbh!
Great video. I just wanted to add that Kansas has the ugliest plate in the union. Why put your state seal on a license plate? That's all. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
Should we use this year's license plate design or last years? Also, I don't know how it works in Europe, but we can pay extra to get specific license plate designs (usually for football teams). Not to mention special plastic plates around the outside of plates.

You should do a video comaparing the 3 Bay Area Airports
You got ga plates wrong, after 2012 they used the white back and peach, not before
It’s kinda funny that the license plates have better designs than the actual state flags lol
All Geoguessrs should sign a petition to make those white licence plates more distinct. What a nightmare are those.
I'd definitely sign that

Ooh we really needed this video. Thanks for putting this together. Great stuff!
Thanks man!
Another common New Mexico plate is the black chile plate introduced in 2017! It's one of the three standard license plate designs available
Yes you are right! Can't believe I forgot to include it.

I've also seen palm trees near southeast coast of Texas and the vegetation there makes me feel like we are in California
Dear Google: Maybe we don't need _that_ much blurring to maintain privacy. How about leaving the top and bottom inches of the plates unblurred?

This must have taken a lot of time to make, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Wow this honestly is amazing work. Good job bro
Thanks man I appreciate that!

that awkward moment when i'm trying to decide among IA/IL/MN and sometimes even SD lollllllllllll
Lmaooo way too easy to mix em all up
For what
Another very popular plate in Alaska is the artistic plate, with a green/blue aurora sky, white mountains, and grey landscape from top to bottom.
The black and yellow California plates are actually a vanity plate option, not just an old one. Even your example photo with a fairly new Honda Pilot, wouldn’t be surprised if it had a vanity plate like “R3KIDS” or something silly

Very helpful video! Even though I will probably not be able to recognize them ever
Yoo I been waiting for this video
Here in Western Massachusetts most of the license plates (in order of how common) are Mass, Conn, Flo, NY, and VT

I watch full video and now 2min after cant remember any state plate
Thanks for the video, and the helpful examples from real streetview! Should really help my US game!
Of course, and thanks again for helping find those elusive plates!
@@ChicagoGeographer No problem, it was my pleasure, and it was a fun little scavenger hunt!

very useful info, thanks !!!!
The front plate law in Utah is completely unenforced. Many of us don't even bother. I prefer a clean front end.
Tennessee has changed it's plate. Our plate is now blue with the symbol on the state flag in the middle and "In God We Trust" surrounding it (there is also a version without "In God we Trust"). It also has "Tennessee the Volunteer State" surrounded by the state outline
do you think you could ever upload you doing the daily challenge as i’ve seen you on it multiple times near the top?

They do. Those are specialty plates you pay more for them

very cash money video my brotha💯
Appreciate it!
Great vid! Lots of these people suck at parking lol
Lmao
Wyoming guy was really bad, it looked like he parked decent then decided to reverse out to find a different spot but hit the curb and gave up
Yes finally again!
As a New Yorker before the 2020 plate I always hated the 2010 plate and loved the 2000s one and I am happy to see the 2010s one disappear
1: try to remember all
2: try to spot out which one it is
3: I give up ;)
Thank you for the Video! Could you do a Map where I can See the blurred plates of each State?
That would be so nice!😊
I'm having quite a large problem trying to learn these plates maybe the Delaware or New jersey plate are recognizable for me but the vast majority arent is there any ideas I can try?
At my college there’s a room for an outdoor adventure club I’m in that has one of the 500 wyoming plates in all existence
I live in New York and I don't see the orange license plates that much anymore
? You still see them all the time. You aren't forced to switch to the new plate in NY, they tried to force everyone to do it but there was a massive revolt over it so they shut the idea down. The Empire Blue, Empire Gold, and Excelsior plates are all still valid in NY
Rhode Island has a new common plate for electric vehicles, it's a green wave instead of blue
Nice tips! Got a US perfect score in 8.5 minutes yesterday and hoping to get it even lower.
Nice that's a great time! Keep it up
could you estimate how many people are using front license plates in states where they don't have to need to?
Indiana and Michigan might have more plates, but remember, they don't have front plates like their midwestern neighbors! So that should help.
Yes, front plates are really helpful in that region!
Haha I refused to ruin my Camaro with an ugly front plate when I lived in Illinois, I hope there's coverage somewhere with it to mess people up
wow... would love to see ImageNet or some other deep neural network's performance on classifying these blurred plates. I think some pro GeoGuessr's might be more accurate tbh!
That would be a really cool experiment actually
Great video. I just wanted to add that Kansas has the ugliest plate in the union. Why put your state seal on a license plate? That's all. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
any of the missouri plates with the renewal decal in the middle is plain ugly, what were they thinking?
This is a helpful video but I am partially colourblind so I find it hard to tell colours on the plates sometimes
Oh yeah that would be tricky :( Glad it's still helpful!
Anyone else notice how many hondas were used in the examples?
Wish I could say I was sponsored but nah, just a coincidence hahaha
where is dc plate?
You should make a map that tests license plates!
Should we use this year's license plate design or last years? Also, I don't know how it works in Europe, but we can pay extra to get specific license plate designs (usually for football teams). Not to mention special plastic plates around the outside of plates.
goat
limy yellow at the bottom = Iowa
My states section is 10 seconds long lmao
Very useful video
Why would anyone care what it looks like blurred out??
License plates are blurred out on Street View
Kentucky = bluegrass state (hence blue at the bottom) ;-)
... I give up.
