Let's just admit that Aaron Swartz was The Greatest Hacker... which is why the US government relentlessly pursued him and caused him to die.
If you want to read realistic fiction about hackers... Where the hackers are actually helpful to society, "The girl with the dragon tattoo". That's a three books series published in Sweden, translated into English. The hero of the story is an investigative journalist exposing criminal plots. He uses a hacker named Lisbeth to sift through information and find the culprits
Do understad though. In all of this, mitnick was a hobo. No money, riding the wave as it came.
When you take secret info from companies you go to jail but when companies take your data and secrets they sell it and it is business.

I feel like one thing though is they also had limited resources to catch him back then. Now it might be easier to catch these sorts of people possibly.
The "sources" weren't as limited as you think. He didn't come up with this on his own, he learned it from others. Of course, he was very good at it. (what we call "social engineering" today.)
@@Sniper-ng5nd Limited by modern standards. Phone calls and cell phones were very much traceable back then, too. CALEA didn't exist yet, so it wasn't exactly real-time. Changing his ESN ("cloning") meant his phone was linked to someone else. That's harder to do these days as the networks are far more integrated - the same ESN showing up more than once can be detected _automatically_ within seconds. Locating an ESN within the network took a while; locating a phone number is instantaneous, because that's how the PSTN functions. (esp. for _mobile_ phones.)
Moving around, changing your identity makes you just as had to find today as 40 years ago. Of course, changing your identity has gotten much harder, because it's now a going concern.
I feel the opposite, it is way harder to remain hidden in 2024 for a list of reasons, starting with the fact the are more and more cameras with face recognition everywhere
This dude was amazingly clever.
If he had only been a little more careful, he only got caught because of his little slip ups every now and then.

A movie MUST be made about this legend!
There is one, Takedown, but it's made after markovs and shimomuras accounts, i.e it's not that accurate or flattering. It's a decent hacker movie though, if you look at it in a vacuum.
But someone should really do a movie based on Mitnick's story from ghost in the wire.
‘Takedown”, (also, “Track Down” in some countries)2000. A bad movie based on a (in my opinion) horribly biased book by John Markoff of the NYT, who involved himself in the investigation and eventual prosecution driven by the revenge by one of Kevin’s foils, Tsutomu Shimomura.
Kevin’s story needs a new take. I nominate Jonathan Littman’s book, “The Fugitive Game” as well as Kevin’s autobiography. Kevin Poulsen can donate his time. He was there, but shouldn’t profit any further from his participation in…related…events.
Watch Mr. Robot.
@@ss_avsmt I like Mr. Robot but they are not even close to the same.
I was blessed to have spoken to Kevin on many occasions both during his time of infamy and later during his deserved subsequent success. We first spoke on a group call back in the days of Blue Boxes and those calls would sometimes have people such as the original Cap'n Crunch John Draper and Steve Wozniak.
Kevin was a good man and a brilliant man and he was badly mistreated and misrepresented during his captivity.
Thank you for this story and for presenting Kevin in such a well understood and honest way (AKA circa 86-96 Sandbagger)
This man inspired me as a kid. He and my good friend from highschool, Alex, revered him. The things we did together were incredible and all because we had been inspired by the hacker spirit in Kevin Mitnick. Both Kevin and Alex have passed on, but I will never forget the memories. May they both rest in peace, compromising every system in their path :)
I swear to god. I laughed my ass off at this story like never before. This should be made into a comedy😂😂. What an absolute legend. Has a film been made about him?
@@TheSubpremeState A fairly subpar movie was "adapted" from the book Takedown. Of course, in the US, the movie was called "Track Down" because we're stupid.
Mitnick inspired a lot of people, his books are fantastic and his legendary status cannot be denied. RIP
@@doggonemess1 I think that may be due to the huge controversy surrounding the film's release (and creation) in the US. Many in the hacking community were up in arms over it. I believe it pretty much destroyed the film's US release. Don't remember exactly what went down and how it went down but I know there were protests outside of the studio's HQ and 2600 mag (of course) were a big part of it all.
Oooh yeah.. Much of it had to do with the fact that kevin was still awaiting trial, I believe! And the film was portraying him exactly as Markhoff/Shimomura depicted him in their book, Takedown (which Kevin vehemently disagreed with). Anyway it's kind of interesting. I don't remember all the details after all this time but I'm sure there is a lot of info on youtube alone.

I appreciate his unique ability to identify weaknesses in a system, setup scenarios that line up nicely for exploitation, and to know exactly how to exploit these. It's a skill. Many of us can identify some weaknesses around us, even the ones that are contributing to our misery (like in government systems), but we can't follow to exploit these. Really the only difference between Mitnick and Bill Gates, or Sergey Brin, or Zuckerberg is that he didn't think about how hacking could make him rich. He just did it as pranks but was likely an even more powerful dual-hemisphere thinker like a Steve Jobs with his artistic and linear lobes well developed if he had the right guidance or impetus. This guy is the Godfather of all true digital divergence and rebellion.
If I understand you correctly, your contention is that Mitnick had both high level social and technical skills. I agree. You seem to have a higher opinion of Jobs than I though. If it was not for Woz and his contributions, Jobs would have probably had modest success and/or sold weed out of a VW bus. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

85% of Corporate losses are sourced from employees who felt betrayed by their masters. {source: Mitnick's book} Focusing on the 15% of losses that a exogenous to the Corporate structure is disingenuous at best. Corporations are their own worst enemy, which is a systemic consequence of contradictions in ownership and value-distribution. Just as Clayton Christensen predicted, all corporations fail, eventually, from their own systemic inadequacies to account for the Social Management fallacies that they institute within their governance methodologies. Honestly the story is struck a nerve I became choked up for a moment and broke down. After hearing about someone's incredible journey through Life then to learn that they died tragically of cancer. It was especially heartbreaking because Mr Mitnick left behind a wife and child. Before learning about his demise, I was thinking I have to look this guy up because we have a lot of things in common....
I was fortunate to meet Kevin Mitnick on occasion and still have his business card to this day (made out of metal). He was a very modest person and always willing to share information and later in his life he looked to monetize his knowledge / reputation. I also got to meet Frank Abagnale Jr. another story for another day.
The super hero of my era!!
Rip Kevin A hero of mine back in the day.
This was an incredible story. Thank you for your hard work and fantastic effort! :)
You are so missed Kevin! RIP ❤. Your brilliance still shines.
This would make an exceptional movie script.
Look up Mike Virus. A way better story
They made a crap movie many years ago. The true documentary about the ordeal you should see is called: FREEDOM DOWNTIME
The Global Ghost Team. RIP Kevin 🫡
Damn! I wasn’t aware that he had passed away 😥. Besides being a great hacker he was an excellent story teller. I hope a movie will be made about him one day. Thank you for the video, well done! 🙏
20:00 That "sinking feeling in his stomach" would later turn into pancreatic cancer.
give tis guy a netflix movie or series!
He’s passed now.
RIP Condor ❤
Being curious , mischievous, and talented is a CRIME! Never forget it!
Amazing story, thank you so much for sharing this great story
Well done. You’re a terrific storyteller.
"One of his buddies ex girlfriend, snitched".
And THIS is why nerds stay single.
Ghost in the Wires is one of my favorite books! Kevin is a legend!
I love falling asleep to it on Audiobook. I didn't know he passed away until I saw this video though 😭
Great documentary - loved to watch it
1:10 Webcams? Computers didn't have webcams back then. At least, it would be exceedingly rare. Like an company executive with a purpose-built video system to talk to a specific remote site. Webcams were certainly not in general use.
I thought that was weird too, but Kevin specifically mentioned that in his memoir related to this incident:
"Working as fast as I can, I install a “remote access Trojan,” a type of malicious software that gives me full access to the system, so I can log keystrokes, grab password hashes, and even instruct the webcam to take pictures of the person using the computer." (prologue)
@Newsthink so you thought you should parrot that line uncritically?
You said he did these things, not that he claims he did these things.
What are you saying??@@CatFish107
The first webcam was developed in 1991, and became common in use in 1993.
@CatFish107 He said it. It's not their job to investigate all of the claims of everyone involved. Only to document what THEIR claims are.
Deep respects good sir 🙏
This was very interesting. Cheers!
Wow, that was amazing storytelling. I know I’ve heard of Kevin before but I didn’t know the story.
He didn't manipulate me
Hackers are geniuses, but they are usually selfish. They use their time fighting each other and simply playing and all together they could literally save the world, free all the people who are slaves to this terrible system, stop wars and do many great things for humanity. What a pity!
Stop wars? I guess they could hold the bad guys hostage until they agreed to STOP KILLING EACH OTHER! Not a bad idea.
22:08 I think that is Fred Thompson from Law and Order. Many people will struggle to do HALF of what he accomplished.
I love these kind of advertising where it says that we’re compromised by having so many firewall protections and then now she’s advertising for one not to mention, I pay for premium to not watch ads
Yt ad revenue alone isn’t enough to pay for the production of these kinds of videos
Geez - I know of Kevin and have seen some of his presentations from conferences here on TH-cam, but I had no idea he was this clever in his early days!
"We don't serve cops here".
I love this guy. 😂😂😂😂
If people haven't read Mitnik's book, 'Ghost in the Wires,' I highly recommend it. The guy was amazing.
5 years in jail for what? Ridiculous!
felt like watching his biography movie call "catch me if u can version millennium" RIP Sir. Kevin im idol your curiosity , salute n much respect
This is really, really well done. One of the most captivating videos I’ve seen in a while. Great storytelling work
Rest in Peace Kevin. Rest in peace..
I never met you, never know you in person, but you will always be one of the greatest hacker that i ever admire. Never have i ever cry hearing a stranger in another half of the world past away.. rest in peace, condor..
My girl and I were witness to the same lights. The lights were very close to us and very bright metalic. This is just another sighting of many.
There's no hope for a "People" who glorify their "Criminals." - Saint Rothel
yea they charges us for long distance not til 2016/2017 where we had minutes on our phone
Listened to Kevin on the Art Bell show. Fascinating.
I want to see this story as a movie! This guy is ABSOLUTELY fascinating.
there was a low budget movie made about him in the 90s or early 2000s i think...pretty good movie cant remember what it's called..
Thank you 👍
i had an acquaintance that could do the phone whistling thing. he had perfect pitch and a hell of a musician.
