- Here are the recipes for this DIY Pantry Mixes to save you time and money!
Homemade Rice a Roni
To each jar add:
½ cup spaghetti pieces
¾ cup white rice
½ t salt
1t garlic
To use: Brown 2T of butter in a sauce pan. Add mix an let spaghetti noodle pieces and rice brown slightly. Add 1 ¾ cup broth, any flavor or a combo of water & bouillon flavor of choice. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer 15 to 20 minutes or until liquid is absorbed and rice is soft. Adjust seasonings to taste.
Cream Soup Mix
2 cups powdered milk
¾ cup cornstarch
2t onion powder
dash of pepper
Put all ingredients into a large jar or other container. Stir or shake to mix well.
Add bouillon or homemade broth when making it.. beef, chicken, vegetable
Add 1/3 cup of mix to 1 ¼ cups your choice of broth, either store bought or homemade. You can also add just water and your choice of bouillon to add your desired flavor. Simmer and stir until thickened. Can also be mixed together and then added to casseroles and will thicken as it cooks.
Sauteed onions, mushrooms, celery can also be added for flavor.
Instant Oatmeal Mix
20 cups quick cooking oats
2 cup powdered milk
2 tablespoons cinnamon
1 tablespoon salt
Take about half of the oats and run them through a blender or food processor to make them smaller… you don’t want flour though! Then mix with the rest of the ingredients. I put this in gallon size jar for storage. This is much easier to use with a big family than little packets. Little packets of things just do not work at my house! For serving we do not really measure this. We scoop out some and put in a bowl. Cover it with boiling water and let it sit for a minute or so. Then mix in honey, maple syrup, dried fruit, milk or anything that you normally enjoy with oatmeal
Small Batch (that I made in the video)
5 cups quick oats
½ cup powdered milk
½ T or 1 ½ t cinnamon
¾ t salt
Muffin Mix
You can find the large batch of muffin mix recipe on my blog:
homesteadinghomemaker.blogspo...
Small Batch (that I made on the video):
4 ½ cups flour
1 ¼ cups sugar
1/3 cup powdered milk
4 ½ t baking powder
1 ½ t baking soda
1 ½ t salt
2 ¼ t cinnamon
¾ t nutmeg
Hamburger Helper Mix Recipe
To each jar of mix add:
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. onion powder
2 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. Cornstarch
1/3 cup powdered milk
1-1/2 c. uncooked elbow macaroni
Mix will store for 6 months to a year.
To prepare, brown 1 lb. ground beef(***See note below).
My directions... brown 1 lb ground beef, add jar of ingredients and 3 cups water.. simmer until macaroni is soft & cooked. Adjust seasonings to taste. Top with cheese if you would like to.
***To save money you can use less ground beef. You can also add beans for some of the hamburger. Use ½ pound cooked hamburger then add 1 ¼ cups cooked beans of your choice. For a meatless version use 2 ½ cups of cooked beans of your choice.

To make meat go further you can also pulse some walnuts in a food chopper and add to your ground beef. Because I dont want the chewiness of the walnuts i make it to almost powder consistency and add to my ground beef. Its great nutrition and adds a healthy fat. Walnuts are good for the brain too.
Interesting! I have never thought of adding nuts to ground beef. Thank you for sharing.😊
Good morning, Crystal! Thanks for all these handy recipes. I can remember, back in the 90's when my children were young, making so many mixes like this. I can't remember the name of the book I had, but it was full of recipes likes this one. Maybe it was called, 'Make Your Own Mix,' or something like that. I'd like to share one of my favorite mixes, too! It's for Good Seasons Italian Dressing [like the packets you can buy]...
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp onion powder
2 tbsp oregano
1 tbsp dry parsley
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp basil
1 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp thyme
1/4 tsp celery salt
Store ingredients in air tight container. To prepare, add the following to shaker:
2 tbsp dressing mix
2 tbsp water
3 tbsp cider vinegar
2/3 c olive oil
Makes enough for two shaker bottles.
Have a blessed day, friend! ~Pam
Good morning Pam! I think I remember that book.. Make a Mix? Or something like that! 😄 Had lots of great recipes. I'm going to copy and save your recipe!! That sounds perfect! Thank you 😊 I hope you have a wonderful day Pam!! 💗 -Crystal 🙂
Those do look good too!
That book looks good but really, you should write a book! You had my attention at, "simplify ... with things we have on our pantry shelf..." thank you for a great video!
What a nice comment! Thank you so much! 😊 Maybe one day I will! 😃
Oh my!! I just found your channel last night.....man oh man am I going to be busy! Love all these! Thanks ....... Got a lot of watching to do.....
Thank you Dorothy! Very nice to meet you 😊. -Crystal ❤️
My favorite oatmeal, walnuts raisins and dates. Thank you for saving me a load of money
You're welcome! and Yum!! I love nuts and dried fruits in my oatmeal too. -Crystal😊
I just found your channel I do plan on giving all of these a try. And your so correct on the prices of things going up. The prices are changing and the quality and quantity has changed a lot.
I know! It's pretty bad and depressing right now!! Hope some of these mixes help you out!
Wow you are incredibly creative Crystal! We are thankful for you and your channel. You had my mind flowing with different ideas when you were talking about your hamburger helper, you could take that same basic mix and, like you said, turn it into whatever flavor you wanted taco, plain old cheeseburger hamburger helper, Italian and add whatever vegetables go with it or whatever you have on hand ! The muffin recipe reminds me of a recipe That I make but kick it up to make a complete breakfast muffin. You make the batter and set it aside , then scramble up some eggs, sausage. Add to the muffin batter, along with a couple of handfuls of cheddar cheese and a couple of TBL of maple syrup. Baking them creates an entire breakfast of sausage egg and cheese in a muffin! I make a bunch, freeze them and heat two in the morning for my husband as he heads out the door- he enjoys them and bc they are easy to eat on the road.
Oh thank you Anita 💗 The hamburger helper is so versatile, and so great to have on hand. You can even cut the amount of hamburger in half and add beans and chili seasoning for chili mac 😃.. lots of ideas. I love your breakfast muffin idea! My hubby would like that too.. and another easy breakfast to have in the freezer for him.. thank you! You are also a very creative lady!! 😊 I love the sharing of ideas, so much to learn from each other -Crystal 🙂
Just discovered you!!!! Awesome channel 💜
I just found your channel, thank you for taking the time to share. I have subscribed.
That's great! Nice to meet you and thank you for subscribing 😊
I really enjoyed your video! I am going through some of my recipes now and will try your rice a roni too! I like the Mexican fideo noodles for this type of dish, they are very tasty and super economical! They come in smaller sizes but still so worth a try ❤ thank you so much for sharing ❤
Thank you! Someone else mentioned that pasta too and I had forgotten about it. Thank you for the reminder.. I just wrote it down on my grocery list.
Love this! Thanks
You're welcome Lena!! 😊 -Crystal🙂
I believe that’s the book I got from the library several years ago. Lots of good ideas. One thing I keep is a good brownie mix that’s made with cocoa. Very good and way cheaper than the kind you make with melted chocolate.
I really love your muffin mix! I’ve used it many time in many varieties! That is so easy to pull out and throw together a quick pan of muffins.
You have always been such a creative, frugal mentor! Thanks for all these great ideas. Have a great week!
You're welcome Adrienne! That muffin mix has always been a favorite of mine. I like the idea of a brownie mix.. Hope you have a wonderful week as well my friend 😊 -Crystal 🙂

Thanks for the great recipes, Crystal! I had on my list of things to do to look for a recipe for DIY Instant Oatmeal. You have saved me the trouble! Have a great day!

Hi crystal
Hi live in the UK but watch your video's . I have made the instant oats and I love it as it is so quick to do. I will be doing some of the other ones. I have found the book on a second hand book site and waiting for it to come
Hi Susan! I'm glad you enjoyed the instant oats. And that's great you found the book at a second hand shop.. great find! -Crystal🙂
I just found you. I am a new subbie. Going to try these mixes. Thank you.
Thank you for subscribing! I hope you enjoy the mixes!!
This video shows it was posted 1 yr ago. Thank you. I am writing this just to say the plaid white/red/black shirt you have on is the same (by looks) as the one I have on as I'm watching you. I thought that was neat.
Thanks for your video.
That is neat! 😃I love my flannel shirts this time of year! I just pulled them out to start switching out my summer clothes to warmer one.
I make up a mix for my all bran cake, but I’ve also made it with weetabix broken up. I mug each of all bran/cereal, I mug self raising flour (or plain flour with some baking powder), I mug sugar ( I use half a mug as prefer less sweet), I mug dried fruit ( I.E., sultanas) and lastly I mug milk (normal or plant works well, I use almond milk). Mix to combine then leave 20mins for milk to soak up. Place in 2lb loaf tin to cook on low for 40mins to an hour. I prep by placing everything but the milk in a jar, OH can then use the mix when he’s in the mood for the cake! It’s a bit like a malt loaf texture, and has no fat in it.
Thank you so much Debra for sharing this! 😊
Hi im new here thank you so much i ben looking for a video like this to make my own dry mixs
Hello! Thanks for being here 😊 Hope you enjoy and find the mixes helpful!
I like knowing what’s in my food
Me too!
Love it. Now I just have to figure out the water amount 😅😊 thank you.
Your welcome... Which recipe are you referring to for water amounts?
@HomemakingontheHomestead I am going to try m yhem all. I think I can figure out the water amount, I will start with less and add as needed. Thank you
Hi I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing your ideas. As an Australian I have never heard of rice a roni or hamburger helper, so very interesting. With the muffin mix in the smaller batch watch are you ratios with the liquids? If I wanted to make a small batch of say 6 muffins? For one egg what would be the min amount of mix is what I am really asking.
Good morning! If I cut a recipe in half and the eggs can't be cut in half I just use the minimum number of eggs in the recipe. The extra moisture in the eggs won't affect the recipe. 🙂
They all look great! Did I miss what wet ingredients you add to the muffin mix?
Hi Sherri, in the description box is the link to the full muffin mix recipe that shows all the options and gives all the liquid ingredients.
@@HomemakingontheHomestead thanks!
Thanks for all your ideas ill have to try and few im woundering how you mix up one batch of muffins using the small batch muffin mix you showed in the video. As in how much dry mix, how many eggs, how much vanilla , water. The blog only mesaurements for 2 doz muffins using the large batch mix
You're welcome! I simply cut the recipe in half. On the blog page it shows how to make 2 doz and I cut that in half (I used 2 eggs .. the recipe says to use 3 eggs for 2doz, so I used 2 for my 1 doz). Hope that helps! 😊
Thanks it does actually
Hello, I really enjoyed the 5 Frugal meal mixes. You said the rice o roni would store for 6 to 12 months.
If I were to vacuum seal the mason jars, do you think that might change the storage time?
I'm sure it would, but, I have never done any vacuum sealing so I can't say how much that would change the storage time on it.
For the instant oatmeal what about dried apple stirred into large jar or just add as use? Thank you.
I'm sure you could, I would probably add them when making a bowl of oatmeal. I guess my thought would be if they would eventually make their way to the bottom of the jar or not be dispersed evenly? I don't know, just my thoughts! 😊
Can you tell me the shelf life of the muffin mix and the hamburger helper please ?
I don't know the exact shelf life. I've had them last for several months (6 or more) with no issues.
How long will these last in a jar if there was a SHTF time ? Thanx
I'm not exactly sure but I have had some on my shelf for several months and they are fine.
What would you add to the hamburger helper mix to make it chili?
I would add a can of beans, some chili powder, cumin, and maybe a little salsa.
@@HomemakingontheHomestead
Oh that sounds perfect! Thank you,I will do that.
You said to add jar to hamburger helper. Is this a one use or can you make a larger amount.
This is the one I use. You could easily double this if you wanted a larger amount.
I can't find the recipes for these mixes
They’re in the description box.
Hi! How do you think potato starch would be for a substitute?instead of cornstarch?
Hello! I've never tried that, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. If potato starch can be used in the same ratio as cornstarch, I think it would be fine!
-Crystal😊
@@HomemakingontheHomestead thank you for replying! I found your TH-cam channel and really appreciate your straightforward information. So many times there’s just so much other talking that it’s hard to get to the point. Thank you so much I’ll be looking at more of your videos.
Thank you! I'm glad you found useful things on my channel! Blessings! -Crystal😊
Hi, I don’t see the wet ingredients for your muffins. I’ve looked everywhere. I just want the small batch, I don’t know how to find it even when you told someone else in the description.🤷🏻♀️
The recipe for the muffin mix is on my blog. The link to the recipe is in the description box. Click on that and it will take you to the recipe where it shows the wet ingredients and all the various additions.
I cut the basic recipe in half and used 2 eggs (the basic recipe makes 2 dozen and uses 3 eggs. I used 2 eggs for a half recipe that makes one dozen).
I wouldn’t of replied if I could find it I clicked on the description sorry just not seeing it. I see the instructions on your blog for the big batch, but not the small batch. Don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
I’m sorry I don’t have instructions for the half batch written down. To make a half batch I cut all ingredients in half. The exception was the eggs because you can’t cut 3 eggs in half. So I used 2 and explained that.
Or if you’re looking for a half batch of the dry mix.. cut the ingredients for the full size batch in half and you have the smaller batch.
So "T" in some of your recipes stands for "teaspoon"?
A capital “T” stands for tablespoon. A lowercase “t” stands for teaspoon.
@@HomemakingontheHomestead Oh thank you!! my amounts would have been well off...
What are the measurements?
All the recipes are in the description box.
