  • Cyclists and bikers may have more in common than you think; not only do we both ride a machine with two wheels, but we also love cycling! Hank and Manon have gone to Donington Park Racetrack to meet Scott Redding, a Superbike World Championship Winner, to see how he uses cycling in his training, and whether he's faster than our own presenters!

OUTSTANDING video. Great to see Redding and that he's so involved in cycling. I used to race both sport bike and pedal and loved both. In the long run, cycling is certainly more sustainable to the body and budget but the thrill of racing... Hmmm. I'd have to say is very different. Motorbikes - first adrenaline then technical (when to come on the throttle out of a corner or getting the downshifts/braking just right going into one). Cycling - pride in your personal fitness and performance (and the blind rage during a sprint). Thanks for making this GCN.

Kind of nostalgic for me. Was into motorcycles and track days in a big way, then started riding road bikes and stopped riding motorcycles. There’s a certain amount of cross over with both having two wheels, bike handling and cornering, pushing the limits. Each are enjoyable in their own way.

Me too. I used to race amateur scrambles 40+years ago. not very fast, but I had a lot of fun. I knew and was friends from the very beginning with great racers you may know, kenny Roberts, and Pat Hennen , Englishman Ron Grant, Art Baumann, and others. it was a great time but bike riding is much more sustainable, and in some ways more thrilling.

I mean if you think about it, they’re riding those bikes that weigh a few hundred pounds and they have to pitch them all over the track non-stop for the entire race. That’s a heck of a workout!
I remember years ago reading about the physiological stats of a Formula 1 race car driver during a race, and those guys are as fit as any elite professional athlete. Just because an engine is doing all the speed and acceleration work, the racer is still doing all the rest and it is very much an endurance sport. If you aren’t fit, it doesn’t matter how fast the vehicle is - you’re not going to win against the other pros.

I used to race superbikes, won a national championship on a Ducati and worked for Ducati the year after Scott Redding switched to BMW. I was following Scotts time at Ducati a lot from my home office. He was a big inspiration for me to start road cycling. Also made me obsessed with trying to get a Storck, which there are no dealers where I am. Anyway, I stopped racing motorcycles in 2019. I took on road cycling in 2020. In 2022 I rode on the track with a motorcycle for the first time in three years and the biggest takeaway I realized was my legs were completely fine afterwards. Usually when you're off the motorcycle for a while and get back on your legs are totally destroyed, but because I have been cycling I felt no soreness. I was amazed. It was a wow moment. This is why I think motorcycle racers train a lot on the bicycles as well. There isn't much training you can do that works the same muscles used in motorbike racing

At the risk of sounding condescending, I don't think the average motorbike racer has anywhere near the leg strength and stamina to be a top level cyclist. It's just a fact that having an engine to move them along provides an immense handicap. From what I've seen, most motorbikers have about the same physique as formula one drivers, they're in shape but definitely couldn't keep up cycling on an average Giro de Italia climb.

I saw the cycling feature on the Eurosport coverage from Donington and spotted the GCN team in the background shots so expected this was coming 👍
I went from racing bikes in my youth to doing track days and started using pushbikes to help keep fitness up for the longer 20 minute sessions - as the experts say it’s ideal non-impact sport for keeping cardio fitness up and keeping weight down. The cycling eventually took over from trackday riding as life interests changed but it definitely helped for confidence, descending etc once I moved to road bikes.
With the tyres it’s not something you can compare really apart from the smaller bike classes running narrower tyres to help reduce weight etc - motorbike speeds are so much higher and greater forces involved when braking and accelerating plus suspension to help absorb the loads. Somehow that doesn’t always mean the tyres cost much less though!

I gave up motorcycling some years ago. The ratio of fun and danger wasn't as good as before and I'm just happy that I survived my early years when I didn't mind steering with the back wheel and stuff like that. I remember coming back with my motorbike from a hilly area during my time at university in Brunswick (Germany) when a friend told me that he never saw me that happy before. Some years later it wasn't quite the same and if you don't have an absolutely clear head, it is better not to drive a motorbike. It is very different from driving a car in my opinion. So, all the best and a lot of fun to all the people who still enjoy driving their motorbikes. I enjoy my road bike now. (Btw, my last motorbike was a Kawasaki ZXR-400 doing up to 14,500 rpm. I had the feeling to sit in and not on the bike if this makes any sense in English. Just thinking of it raises my heartrate immediately. Lol)

Do you REALLY want to know how good Scott Redding is? I rode the HARDMAN event in California yesterday and Scott dropped in to do the race. This was is 1st Gravel race EVER. HE WON! He destroyed the field in a 76mi. Race with 8,500 feet of climbing. Check his STRAVA. He’s a BEAST!!!

How common are American style Crits in the UK? One to two km course with four to six high speed corners. Sometimes flat, sometimes with a hill.

Pretty common, 'The Tour Series' is the highest level of Elite Crit Racing in the UK and is often televised. You can still find last season's Tour Series on GCN+ (territory restrictions apply)

I have a nice motorbike in my garage. It's fun and pushes adrenaline unlike anything else at 240 on the country road, but with all that leather and the full helmet it doesn't give the feel to be one with your environment. I like the raw power and the brute force, but I like the freedom on my roadbike even more. The wind, the direct connection to good or horrible surfaces, plants and insects crossing our way... As a cyclist I'm part of the system and even though it feels fast, I'm still always ready to stop for the best picture ever. 🥰

And on my motorbike I'm always Schrödingers biker²: At the same time having the fun of my live, being already dead or in jail. It's so cool to have almost the same fun without having to worry about anything else than being accused of "cycling furiously". ^^

Good video in a while but still we need to see video about bicycle grip, making special frame and adding motorbike tires to see if the lean angle limit of 40 to 45° is due to small tires or rather weight of the bicycle maybe center of mass is too high on bicycles.

Ha funny you say that, there's a segment that's a roundabout near me which I'm faster on with my Spesh Diverge 10kg gravel bike (low cofg) with 32mm tyres than on my Spesh Tarmac 8kg with 26mm tyres. On the Tarmac it feels like I'm on the limit.

You can buy a new 2022 BMW S 1000RR for only $17,640 about the same price of a premium race bicycle. I know which one I'd buy.

  • @All4Grogg

One sure way to make cycling seem cheap is to dabble in sport bikes. Going fast on public roads is extremely dangerous and track days can set you back $500 per day on the cheap side with road tires and rental leathers. I've done one single track day at Road Atlanta over a decade ago, so very worth it, but it cost me a weeks pay at the time. How I was riding off the track would've eventually been the end of me, it took a slide into a farmers field for me to think what would've happened if there was a guardrail on that corner.
More MotoGP riders have lost their lives cycling than racing on the track, crazy bit of trivia until one realizes that there are no cars, barriers or trees to do the fatal damage on a track.
Gotta laugh at how well GCN made the price difference not seem like the motorcycle was an AMAZING value, 5x the price for a street legal race bike vs a road bike...uh, guys?

Its a pity you couldn't get a 2-up ride on a superbike at the track for the full experience! See if you can tee it up next year. Disturbing thing is they would ride around with you on the back at 10-15sec off their full pace and your mind would still be blown!
