I'm an inline 6 guy who tried to build a 300 HP 4.2 Jeep engine for my Javelin. It sounded NASTY, but ate itself soon after. I say build the NA version so I won't have to!
what did you learn from this? i've been scraping the internet for people boosting their 4.0 L6s and I can't find stuff on pistons/rod specs just because its such an uncommon thing to do. i have a 04 wj that im going to build into a street sleep, looking to push up into the 4 digit range way out in the future but for now trying to stay in that 300 horse range.
Got an old jaguar xj6 I'm putting a 4200 in... Sadly got two projects going but seeing you guys keeping the dreams alive makes me want to bump the jag to the front of the line
Cool project! used to race with a guy that had a mk3 with the 7m turbo. My vote if its a autocross/street car would be a twin sequential, 4.2liters is enough displacement and opens up the turbo options. But for autocross only I would vote NA or Centrifugal supercharger. either way I cant wait for the next vid!
The reason they are so heavy was because the mk3 was moving away from the sporty category and more into grand tourer. A Comfy two seater that can be sporty. Dollar exchange rates, economy, and tariffs. Forced them to make em higher "class" vehicles meant for more wealthy buyers, to keep margins higher. So they had thicker metal, double walls, sound deadening, plush automated seats and so on. Still one of my favorite toyota cars, they just look like a slick box and I love that.
I knew that car as soon as I saw the thumbnail! I'm happy that you ended up with it and that it's getting revived. That car led me to the 4200 builds and eventually to your channel years ago.
i believe it being a turbo supra you should make it a 2jz killer build. 5-600 horsepower on a haltech or link. just a fast streetcar you can genuinely enjoy daily.
@manworksgarage 2jz's are best enjoyed at 5-600whp not useable street car at 7-800whp. You will eat up 3.0 2jz's at the same power level from the extra torque you get out of the 4.2 plus you can utilize a bigger turbo and still have decent spool.
I cannot believe you ended up with this car. That video was also my introduction to the 4200 and I’ve wanted to swap my mk3 ever since. Watched it too many times haha. Oh, and I vote for an unnecessarily strung out N/A motor. ALWAYS wanted to see one of these at its max without boost!
My personal opinion is it’s a Supra. It has to have a turbo. They are known for loud exhaust and turbo noises. So cool to see this car again. I remember watching videos about it a few years ago
Aweosome built man, some times I was thinking if I break my 2j maybe I try a 4200 in my car aswell, very cool proyect I want to see how this engine perform in a mk3 supra.
Love the car, I had one in high school. It was one of my favorite cars I’ve ever owned. I had the same color you have if you repaint it it will be super beautiful. That is an awesome color. I vote all motor set up.🎉
I'd love to see a naturally aspirated build, and I think this is the perfect car for that especially with the heavy weight of the car without any forced induction currently on it.
Ironically I ran into an almost identical color mk3 4200 at cruise night this summer. Sometimes I think I have car project ADHD but I'm glad I can live vicariously through you on your number of projects!!
Awesome! I also love box flares. I bet a lot of comments are going to say superturbo, but I vote go with the first option for now. Turbo and use what's on the car. Would love to see y'all drift this thing a little too!
An N/A high comp build would be great to see. Something a little different and a bit more involved. Whatever option you choose, I'll be watching with eager anticipation. 😊
Mk3s are known to be heavy cars. I think if you do an NA response build it would be more fun in something lighter. VGT turbo or Supercharger would be really cool
Let's show them 2jz boys that gm can make a wicked inline 6 engine just as well..! The camaro and Supra are going to skyrocket your channel!!! I am very excited to see what you can do with these.🔥👌
Centrifical supercharger running off of front of motor. Instant torque and boost for autocross. Ideally positioned for the intercooler. It looks like a turbo- sort of ish, and your throttle whacks off the lights would be insane. But, all your options would be sweet......
I think this would be an excellent time attack car, really show the capability of the 4200 in circuit conditions, also a 4200 with individual throttle bodies would be absolutely wild to hear
So glad you picked this car up. I remember when limeswap was building it. A guy put a 4200 in a 3rd gen fbody around the same time and it think limeswap and him were friends/influenced each other.
Calvin im so excited with this build. After seeing the thumbnail I instantly thought of the video of this 4200 supra, funny that its the same one LOL. Excited to see how this ends up, has to be my favorite project.
Great stuff! I've build my hot rod for autocross and road racing, too, but only did autocross racing. I'd love to see what you could do naturally aspirated, either with stock compression or maybe up to about 11.5:1. It would be very cool to see what a hopped up 4.2L could do and then autocross it and eventually turbo it if you really wanted lots of power, especially a small turbo so it could be more responsive and put maybe 500-600 HP to the tires, (ideally not on E85 but premium pump gas, like most of us would do on a street car). I've always wanted to see about some kind of supercharger, too, and maybe not electric but maybe centrifugal. Thanks!
I vote for NA build with ITBs! Super high Comp.. Aggressive Cams.. Maybe even a 4.5-4.6L Stroker setup? After that just go absolutely nuts on suspension and weight loss!
I am so glad you saved this car Calvin! Like you, this was one of the cars that introduced me to the 4200 and I have seen that same video of it taking off 100000000 times!
Yo an A70 Supra. And surprised it wasnt rusted away in some forest or junkyard. Whats funny about the agreement between the JDM car makers is there are supposed to be capped at 276bhp/280 crank horsepower. But that figure is more like 276 wheel horsepower and the 2JZ and RB26 are producing around 320-330 bhp at crank. A few simple bolt on mods like intake and exhaust easily those engine break 400+ bhp because the factory exhaust are very restrictive.
Ah the memories of watching this car take shape between classes. Also, 4200 auto x build has always been an idea in my head as well, glad to hear someone is making it happen!
I'm going to vote torqstorm style supercharger. You have the A/A intercooler and it would be super snappy! I can't hardly believe the car is 3400lbs! A lot heavier than I expected
vortec 4.2 was my backup for my mk3.. way cheaper and easier to find than a 2J and way more displacement. Only thing is 2J can rev higher and has more aftermarket support at the moment. Sounds like a 2J though!
Back when the gen5 wasn't even a concept car i talked about the I6 being ideal as a base performance motor for a new F body. I got a lot of push back from people, but the most absurd was the idea that 4.2L is just somehow too big for an I6. The thought was that the 2JZ was a 3 liter, the RB26 a 2.6L, so thats obviously the correct size for an I6. Besides the fact that if GM wanted to, they could easily produce a 3L version of the Atlas, the only things they could come up with were some vague notions of bore stroke ratios, ideal combustion chamber width etc.
Do a small turbo build, under 500 whp. Seat time is more important than power. Fit as big of tires as you can, if a 295 is all you can fit square run some re71rs’s. They’re the best feeling of the fast 200 tread wear tires. But if you can fit 315’s go with A052’s
N/a balanced rotating assembly with nice induction set up for a linear curve with decent rpm. You can ways build another or change up the set up. We all love forced induction, but there is not many people on you tube pushing the boundarys or n/a and showing it to the public.
mkiii supras are just heavy! and you have a hard top, which is the lighter version N/A or supercharged would be pretty cool! im running an ls swapped one with the factory r154 trans, which is just an older version of the ar5. 382 rwhp N/A, its plenty of fun! that lsd is reasonably strong, but i bet you anything it needs the clutches shimmed to actually work well
My first car was a 1986.5 mkIII Toyota Supra. I went through an engine, head gaskets, and a transmission. It's a decent handling car and it surprises me how cheap they still are. Mine had 17 inch 5zigen fn01r-c wheels. I think 17 inch look best on this car (not a fan of the 18s on this car). Mine was slammed on Bilsteins with 10.5 inch wide in back and 8.5 inch wide in front. I'm very excited for this build.
If it were me and I was looking at Autocross/street build I'd be really thinking about a 60-66mm turbo with a T4 frame size. She's portly so it's going to take some work to get her moving. I've always heard that about these cars, but they're not huge so it's kind of surprising honestly. Just a thought on this for you, if you do hubcentric rings there's a lot of EXTREMELY large diameter 5X4.5 pattern calipers with almost the same offset as the Supra has. Talking like 14" rotors. Start looking at late model Mustangs or even Ford Fusions. Yeah you'll add some unsprung mass but if you Autocross it I could see it cutting maintenance down a lot.
If you are worried about drivability I would do supercharger. The NA build would be sweet but will turn the car into a race track trailer queen. Love the builds✌️
the most powerful naturally aspirated inline six engine ever produced for road cars was the 2005 TVR T440 R, with its 4.0L six making a claimed 434hp to the crankshaft. i'd love to see the Atlas fly past those numbers before popping on a procharger or other forced induction setup.
You need a turbo manual car, with an external BOV, in your life at least once. GT3076R, with a 1.06 hot side. Yes, small for a 4200, but on song from below 2000rpm, but still get to 6500rpm without excessive drive pressure. I dropped from a 3582, to the 3076, on a manual 4.5 I6, so much more fun to drive, with only barely noticeable power loss above 5500rpm.
The rear diff is a Toyota 8", similar to what was in the trucks. You can swap gear sets meant for trucks into these with the right combination of side bearings.
Turbocharging would be fitting for the car, but 300+ NA hp would be great for autocross and would be excellent content since it’s a different avenue from your usual 4200 builds. That gets my vote.
MK3's are very under appreciated and personally I'd rather have the MK3 because of that. MK4 draws too much attention. I supercharger would be sick, but NA hp is usually better. This coming from a guy that is pushing 25psi (really small turbo) just to make 300whp with a little 1.8. End goal is 400ish I just need to put the bigger turbo on and finish the exhaust. The car only weighs 3280lbs with me in it and is a daily so I don't want to go crazy. I wish I could make that power NA! But I get 20mpg on pump E85 so I can't complain really...
So excited for you to finally do a manual trans build. Id keep it simple and enjoy it as a sick hotrod. The ar5 isn't known to hold lots of power. You will pop a few! Luckily they are still dirt cheap.
It looks like a series 5 Mazda RX-7... Just whack a slightly oversized turbo on it (or tune a rising boost curve) for that old school turbo lag jet takeoff feeling.
I think it’s about time someone does a Baja style engine build. Maybe bore it out and/ or build it to rev high. That or the supercharger would be cool. We want to see something with an unobstructed exhaust!
Im all about turbos but would love to see an old Eaton 4.6 Cobra supercharger on it and dig into Auto X or play on some road courses (VIR would be fun with a brake upgrade) but a high compression N/A ITB set up would be cool too
One of my friends had an '88 Supra Turbo in the early '90s. As I recall the turbo cars had a 3.54 LSD. He had an '87 NA model as well, which I believe had a 4.38 rear.
I’ve watched that video of this Supra 100tines since middle school it made me want something with 4200 power I was so tempted to purchase this Supra especially for the price glad you scooped it up Calvin can’t wait to see the build
Thats so wild that you got the supra, im sure i have the video of it running saved in a playlist somewhere from ages ago, this is gonna be fun to watch.
My vote is some tiny twins. Cheap budget and fast spool. Use internally wastegated ones to keep space.
Yup
But weeeeeeee weeeeeeee 😢😢 no weeeeee weeeee needs weeeeee weeeee super charger go weee weee weee 😢😢
Compound
@@wolfgangsgarage1693 nah it won't sound very good at all

Super high compression, aggressive cams, maybe some spray if that tickles your fancy. Sounds super cool

Wow you already have the pistons. Definitely go for it!
+1 for the spray that car deserves to look its best.

Yooooo this mk3 is iconic i used to watch bro bros ig videos and it is what made me fall in love with the 42000
I vote custom m122 supercharger setup. All the torque. Instantly snd some nice whine.
It looks like a series 5 Mazda RX-7... Just whack a slightly oversized turbo on it (or tune a rising boost curve) for that old school turbo lag jet takeoff feeling.
NA with ITBs .. would be cool. Didn't GM build a 500hp race version for the offroad trailblazer truggy...
That had zero similarity with the production engine. Look up Falconer Inline 6
It would sound awesome, but for autox I feel like it would lack the low end. Be great for a high horsepower na build though.
@@Calvin-Nelson 500hp na sounds like a good goal to me
I vote with the Itb's
I would like to vote for ITBs.
Wow! A super rare, US spec only, Vortec Supra, powered by the 4.2AZ....nice score! 🤣🤣
You funny!
I think it’s about time someone does a Baja style engine build. Maybe bore it out and/ or build it to rev high. That or the supercharger would be cool. We want to see something with an unobstructed exhaust!
Well this is going to be fantastically useful, I've been trying to figure out this exact swap with my mk3!
Use a regular blocky type Gm map sensor for the boost gauge.
Im all about turbos but would love to see an old Eaton 4.6 Cobra supercharger on it and dig into Auto X or play on some road courses (VIR would be fun with a brake upgrade) but a high compression N/A ITB set up would be cool too
Supracharger track car would be absolutely mental. Or do a nitrous build!
Wow, I’m surprised how heavy that thing is, cool project. I vote roots or screw supercharger, it will be cool to have a auto cross / road course car
My vote is high compression natural aspirated, cams and 3d printed itb’s. Autocross for sure!!
Whatever you're going to do, please don't hack the supra up. 3rd gen supras that aren't rusted to hell are getting hard to find.
One of my friends had an '88 Supra Turbo in the early '90s. As I recall the turbo cars had a 3.54 LSD.
He had an '87 NA model as well, which I believe had a 4.38 rear.
Despite the paint, that thing looks really clean. For relevance I live in the rust belt.
Yeah. It's got a few bad spots, but everything structural is good to go.
What a cool project! If you go with a supercharger, a centrifugal might be a good choice, to help keep the gearbox alive.
Like that N/A build! After watching you for couple of years, goin to build one for my 50 chevy pickup.
1 vote - Supra Charger
Someone in a reply said compund and i agree, a small one for low end spool that feeds into a big boy for the top end.
