    -From James Mccourt:
    No, after a recital she was ready for her favorite word and activity, , "conversation," and in every city but especially in Barcelona and Madrid (a city she greatly preferred to her own. She was Spanish, not Catalan (and Catalan women don't seem to know who they are at all), And conversation for her meant listening as much as talking. She was an egalitarian and never a divav--although when her elder son brought home a puppy, they both decided to call her "Diva," The roles: The Countess Almaviva, Manon, Butterfly and Melisande. Since this is a page dedicated to Maria Calls, I will tell two things. Maria hated New York and the Metropolitan. She said of Victoria "She is the rose in the middle of all the weeds." Some time in the 70s, Victoria was giving a recital at the Salle Wagram in Paris, and an enormous basket of the most beautiful red roses was delivered backstage without a card attached. "But who sent these beautiful roses -- and so many!" "The sender wishes to remain anonymous, Madame." Then I cannot accept them," After a long pause, the man said," Well, Madame theyare from Madame Callas." Victoria said '"Well, I am going to call her up," and she left the dressing room and went into the executive offices and did so. Thus there developed a friendship, by telephone, for both women were shy (Yes, Maria in her later years was shy.) I asked her about this but she never said a word about it until Maria died. Victoria was the first person Bruna called that morning, and heard the telephone fall to the floor, and no sound but weeping on the other end. Years later, when Victoria was chosen to open the Maris Callas Atheneum in Athens, she held up her hand to stop the voluminous applause and said, "Please may we all give a standing ovation to Maria Callas?" It was that night I attempted to "get at" this friendship of theirs -- it was then that she said "Nobody could touch her," and all she would say to me, her eyes full of tears was "I was trying to get her to keep the heart heart Up."
    Sincerely yours, James McCourt

    I think Callas is the only singer who starts the ascending trills on middle-low (E4)

    Oh dear, who can sing this way these days? The Normas I hear now are a pale reflection of the true Normas of the past. And Callas was the greatest of them. No one can even dream of coming close to her now although we had Caballe and Sutherland, who also gave us incredible accounts of this glorious music. But Callas remains unsurpassed, her vocal skills and interpretation are unique, as are her understanding of this most dramatic role. Unbeatable.

    Truly gigantic chest tones. Amazing that Callas could seamlessly transition from Tigress to the fragile lachrymose tones in the final scene, all within a few minutes of each other.
    Definitely the most difficult role IMO. Who else could sing those low tones with such aggressive dark placement then sing those venomous trills and then finally the pleading heroic middle voice tones with agility? Simply untouchable singing.

    I cannot find the comment from James McCourt to which you draw attention. But, I wish to add that Maria Callas was a great supporter of other singers and a gracious artist. Yes she did have her 'moments' but mainly due to her great anxiety as a performer and her perfectionism. She made derogatory comments about other singers but mostly these were justified. Her support of singers such as Victoria De Los Angeles, Teresa Berganza and Monserrat Cballe is well documented.

    Soprano is Soprano AND Tenor is Tenor. Period. Female and male cords are anatomically different and produce different reaches in singing. Female cords vibrate in registers like C, two octaves above middle C or beyond, and Tenor vibrates comfortably in registers between C3 to C5 (mostly using falsetto to reach higher notes but possibly damaging their cords). They both have different extensions and tessituras to use in their own roles inside the Opera singing....

    Why would any soprano or tenor even think of singing these roles after hearing Callas and Corelli. You would have to be out of your mind since there is no way you can match this. Callas' Norma will be the gold standard for eternity.

    She is indeed basso-devilish here, like Medea, while Franco is a vain and selfish beautiful playboy with a bright voice. One can understand why the pleasure-loving Pollione grew tired of this macabre, fiersome woman. Strangely Maria's own life reminds of Norma's, she could sing this to Onassis...

      @@LohengrinO true but truth be told La Callas craved those characters in real life. If she had not we would probably have her for much longer. While Adalgisa is not that innocent - after swearing her devotion to Norma and feigning repudiation of Pollione, she conspires to run away with him, thereby betraying Norma and breaking her pledge (scene in Act 2 when Clotilde tells Norma of Adalgisa and Pollione trying to flee). Quite worthy of that rich, famous, the bad and the ugly circle.

    I've always had this weird fantasy that Callas, after her high notes were pretty much gone, would dress up in male drag and begin a new career as an operatic tenor. That's a thing I'd pay to see - Callas singing some famous tenor role - she certainly had the chest register...

    • @LohengrinO
      @LohengrinO  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      well the ultimate Opera drag Queens were older dame Joan and Birgit in terms of appearance... Callas could have made a spectacular career as mezzo or contralto in her later years, it was suggested to her but said NO as she had never sung second roles in her career not even when she started singing professionally at the age of 16

      @@LohengrinO had she flew Italy forever after Rome and went to London or Paris, take the mezzo lead roles and even get people creating more for her I believe her life would have been less tragic.

    I just listened Cerquetti's Norma in Spotify today, she was drowned by Corelli in that recording, and also Corelli hold the last note longer in the duet. But in this recording, Callas drowned Corelli! I think Corelli is paired with the right Soprano in this recording, because Callas can balance the Corelli's voice (same volume, same length in note holding).
    Well, i love Cerquetti too, she was a great singer in her era, even her career was too short. What a pity...
