Commentary from me is superfluous. This is stellar singing and superb interpretation. For me it was Caballé's greatest triumph, and as far as Normas of the second half of the 20th century go, second only to Callas herself.

Yes, the singing is... extra.
Trrill™ is about florid passages, improvisatory underpinnings, staccato'd intuitions, and virtuosities even at their most ridiculous.
But it's also about the biggest, boldest form of vocal emission, with aural examples of basically correct singing, correct impostazione-chiaroscuro, vowel clarity, firm and centered pitch, correct vibrato action, absence of throatiness or thickness, sounds free from constriction and from the acoustic noise that accompanies it-with occasional video examples that demonstrate what the body, face, mouth, jaw, and tongue look like when used with correct impostazione-the vocal emission of the one and only Italian school.

Yes! To imagine being there! Yet I am so grateful to be here now!
Can you imagine, this live in 1974 under very windy conditions, without any help of technical things like microfoons, just life ONLY her voice. I was 10 years old on vacation in France and we where flabbergasted. Yes Callas is a queen NR 1.2 but she is THE QUEEN nr. 1. That's it without any further discussion.
The first time I went to the Opera was in 1970 in Barcelona’s Liceu and I saw the first Norma Caballe sung with Cossoto and since then I’ve attended all Caballe’s performances in Barcelona and also in other Opera Houses! I miss her and I always will be thankful to Caballe because she was so generous with her hometown!!
Luckily this was made fifty years ago. If it was now, such splendid singing would have been staged in a public hospital, Norma as a nurse and Pollione as her chief doctor, or even worse.
LOL.
If they had voices like Caballé and Vickers they could be the toilet cleaner and the janitor for all I care!
It is the voices and the music that count.
But it does irritate me that in at least 50% of all opera performances (and plays as well) a halfnaked, mute young men, most often with little angelwings, appears behind a singer and nobody knows why as the composer/librettist never included him in the opera.
Sorry folks, I concede that Vicker's often displays as the thinking man's tenor, but holly cow, Mel, the voice sounds like the closest thing to a fog horn, & hence, lacks any vestige of pleasantness. It's even uglier in his recording of 'Fidelio'.

@@georgecarlson5836 It was certainly recognizable, unlike many (most ?) today. I never found the sound unpleasant, but it was strangely and unnaturally metallic.

lol, Mistral is a North wind, exactly a corridor wind which follows the Rhone valley from the North, cold in winter but not in summer, we can have 40° in Orange with a strong Mistral
Caballe was untouchable during her prime around these performances in Orange. Even Callas could never...
Careful- callas coached her on the role. Let’s just say this was Montsy’s anno mirabilis. Callas’ Norma of 55 is the same quality, but with better solfège.

Yes, well Norma is really angry in this role and is the main one who is being hurt and scorned. Adalgisa is hurt too . Her performance was excellent as well, but as you said Montserrat is really on fire. to portray this and what a fantastic job she did.
Plus, Norma being the high priestess is not used to being crossed. She really lets Pollione have it!
I adore opera - especially when it's done like this. Caballe and Vickers are both magnificent, dramatically as well as vocally. Bravo!

This is an example of how great performers can make their colleagues even better. This had to have been the best Norma Caballe ever sang, and probably Vickers too.

Simply sublime. Her upper register is legendary, but that lower register is like a mixture of honey and hot chocolate, smoothly sliding off a spoon. 🥰
Omg, I always describe the tone of her voice being like honey and velvet. But your description of "honey and hot chocolate sliding off a spoon" is WAY more accurate!! I actually prefer her mid and lower registers, there's just such a sensuality and femininity to them. I adore her ...

This is GODLY, SPECTACULAR, VISCERAL singing! Dear lord where are these singers today...I go to the opera house and fall asleep by the first intermission!
You did unfortunately miss a Golden Age of the opera with starting 1965 to 1995..the singers were all top to a glorious number. Houses were full to see the greats of an endless time to the Opera coming to a unique period which we can only hope will someday return.

@@meto2854 And of course, I am, too, in such a great sadness that dear Madame Monserrat Caballe has departed. She was without discussion or argument a tremendous surprise to the world of the opera! She did transport the experience of the world of the opera to a level no one expected. It pains to see such a rich talent leave us. I am grateful that the films do exist. And we all hope the Golden Age does return. Further, Jon Vickers was a rocket voice, too.

To me the greatest moment in this legendary performance is her magnificent ‘Deh non volervi vittime’. Vocal and dramatic perfection.

I wish this was broadcast for the arts...but of course, copy right protection must be fulfilled..however. so many have not see what a great Norma IS in Monserrat Caballe with J. Vickers. They are in chilling voice this evening taping. Both knock their performance out of the park!! This is what is the great moment of opera!! Even the Roman's and Druids could hear voices of untimely despair of being unchaste to themselves, each other, and duty. RIP Caballe and Vickers. And thank you.

Orange was great for everything.She was magnificent here and of course in Casta Diva with the wind as part of the cast.And everytime she sung O Mio Babbino Caro from Gianni Schicchi.It was her favourite aria for concerts.She was always magical.Even with Freddy.She worked her magic and he lived dix years longer.Brava Montserrat.One moment they say.A LIFETIME...

O trabalho de direção foi espetacular, o contraste marcante em chiaroscuro fez a cena toda parecer um quadro vivo de Caravaggio. A interpretação de Montessat Cabale é visceral, eu tb teria medo dela com um punhal a minha frente, e Vickers soa muito bem para uma papel em uma ópera belcantista.
Caballe' fantastica voce e che spettacolare tenore che era Vickers.
Alvise doge, Vickers è sicuramente un grande artista ed interprete, ma purtroppo la sua voce a grattugia con l'età ( qui non è di primo pelo) non è certo migliorata

This is my favourite interpretation of this by Caballé. She has such a rich dark tone and the way she “spits out” the name Adalgisa is sublime! When she was on top form she was truly exquisite !! I doubt we will ever hear such a voice again. She was unique and rightly regarded as one of the best! No comparisons needed she is (like others) incomparable!!! The stars aligned for this performance it was spectacular!! I will never tire of listening to her heavenly voice!
