Saw this recommended to me and tried it on a whim. I was pleasantly surprised that it was an insightful and informative-based conversation on the topics. Moe and LO tends to get so reactionary that it's nice to see. Real convos are usually impossible.
superb episode. I feel like this podcast format is like 70% educational and 30% anime opinion and funny commentary. I'm not a big brain person but this format is superior imo
I walked into an izakaya and before i could even ask for a beer they handed me a menu with chinese translations, dunno how they figured me out so quickly
The database thing does kinda remind me of RPG fan culture both videogames and tabletops. Mainly because a lot of the conversations I've hand tend to start by talking about builds or character concepts we're using before going into specific narrative or gameplay moments. I hear the TTRPG scene is pretty big in Japan especially for Call of Cthulhu so I imagine there could be a lot of overlap there.
I am a foreigner living in Taiwan and I have been in Japan.. Japanese are so much more difficult with foreigners even though level of English speaking is about the same.
The Harem protagonist discussion brought up is interesting. How girls fall in love to a plain guy who exhibits non-traditional masculinity traits and read that as a message. Had the same feeling on how media discussion on the west tends to dive from the world/story perspective first, and Japanese media revolves around characters. This is reflected by the reception of their respective audiences too. The anime crowd shares memes of character moments to a feverish degree and they subsequently becomes promotional material for the show. I don't think even western animated shows get their characters spread around like that. Maybe for a show like TMNT where they design characters more specifically to entice people to pick a favorite? Also this may be timeline bias, but 'character analysis' content on TH-cam seems to have more affinity with Anime/Manga as well, whereas content in other media, character writings are packaged within broader subjects. I had fun listening once again.
As someone who thought moe was equivalent to cutesy stuff, i was confused when i watched an anime (can't remember which series it was atm) and being confused when moe was used not in that context so i had to do some googling. Also as a kpop listener and anime fan, that soobin/made in abyss situation was like watching the pot calling out the kettle or whatever.
Would it be accurate to say that "Moe" is basically when you get things like Gokuism? “the belief that the principles of Dragon Ball provide a moral compass for one's life, and that Goku is an ideal role model and moralistic person.” Cuz bodybuilders and Mexican cartels do be having a kinship for Goku. Also can Kinship work as a synonym for the word "Moe" (At least it's way better at being a helpful English word equivalent for the common anime normie who needs a comprehensive but not dumbed down definition than the grossly misconstrued and overly simplified "cute girls doing cute things" definition thar you see spread across all corners of the world excluding Japan.)
Your podcast is best long form anime content in TH-cam I have seen for a while. A am a long time anime enthusiast but I still learn new things.
You're too kind 🙇♂️

We certainly try to aim for that with each episode in some capacity.

This can be applied to fighting game culture too with terms like shoto, grappler and the way players talk about them in relation to particular games.
Translating Japan, top tier guest.
