Sad that that industry is really not healthy right now. The reason I bring it up is because Alicesoft is returning, but only to market their gacha game and not to sell eroge merch or promote upcoming titles. Man how things have changed.
Great to see OverWorkedSalaryman-san on the channel and YO LYRICAL NANOHA TOP 5 MAHOU SHOUJO, THAT'S SO BASED (also shout out to MahoAko lol) 56:25 Hate to be the Fate "Um Acshully" guy here, but *spoilers* Illya already over-supplies Berserker in mana via being the homunculi manifestation of the Holy Grail powering the whole Battle Royale game itself (yeah, somehow the little goblin girl IS a cup, which is fucked up) But also if you wanna count Prisma Illya rules, it rolled back Mana Transfer to include "any other human fluids" which is the exact excuse for Hiroshi Hiroyama to put the Gyaru-Clone of Illya to just kiss every other girl...because mana deprivation. more importantly 1:34:00 The entire like last third of the show being a Magical Girl talk is still deep in my wheelhouse: There's so very little serious Historical/Analytical essays on Magical Girls, yes partially due to it being a niche part of the hobby, but also just seeing the mode of consumption of MG community, many are women who are content to mostly vlog/react on a show-by-show basis (Doriami or Sailor Guardian Hope), which while a fair enough way of Fan behavior, won't develop into "THE DEEP DIVE INTO MAGICAL GIRLS" unless it's like the CrunchyRoll editorial by Tim Lyu (Strong enough to be encyclopedic, but massive holes past like Pretty Cure), ErynCerise's attempt to start from the VERY beginning with 60s-70s (she eventually burnt out right after Cutie Honey)...and one anituber who shall not be named for while putting in a massive retrospective for a series, would constantly insert "...but it's stupid so it's actually bad" despite all the rest of the effort on display (both in researching the show and the effort the show put into the lore/world building itself) Arguably the strongest cataloguing and analysis of Magical Girl history is twitter user ehoba's on-going research, pulling in tons of other sources (the 70s Idol Craze, the sudden push for more Shoujo Battle manga, multi-media toy products), however, it is a single person's effort (one from a Japanese perspective) and in personal taste some of the interpretations and focus of analysis I'd disagree with (a major focus on Otaku and later erotic influence into the full mainstream genre) 1) It's wild that so much of the "Magical Girl Purists" see Madoka and the DARK AGE OF MAGICAL GIRLS so vitriolically, both in the sheer rejection to Late-Night Dark Adult takes on the genre are seen as anti-thetical...but also that even Sailor Moon, and Card Captor Sakura were themselves the paradigm shifters from the 80s Magical Idols of Pierrot to pushing more and more into Magical Warrior territory via adopting Sentai/Henshin Hero (tokusatsu) monster-of-the-week style conflicts. 2) Vice-versa, "MADOKA IS A DECONSTRUCTION" I see as a separate secondary group, who yes, not-so-subtly have such a prejudice on Magical Girls without watching any other show of the genre, that seeing a cynical take on a hero show makes them put out a "MADOKA IS DARK AND DEEP" vid every month or so... 3) still to play devil's advocate, from many of Gen Urobuchi's interviews (like how the Madoka Magical girls are like Al Queda [following their own sense of morality]) and his entire string of "Anti-Hero-of-Justice" themes spanning from Fate/Zero > Psycho-Pass > Madoka Magica to even Kamen Rider Gaim, ironically, Madoka might EXPLICITLY and DIRECTLY attack the concept of Magical Girls (See: Sakuya's entire arc of living up as a Hero of Justice [her theme song] and it only inducing more suffering). So in a way, he DID meet his own intention to "destroy the idea of Heroes of Justice [magical girls]", which hey if your want the Author dead, it's another reason there. 4) If anything, the constant push of Magical Warriors as THE standard for Magical Girl stories trickles down into a superficial/simplified idea of "What is a Magical Girl" especially for Western audiences, particularly in either neglecting Non-Action Fantasy Shoujo shows (Healer Girl, the ongoing Magical Girla and Evil Lieutenant, etc...)...but ALSO so much of the shows draw more and more from Henshin Hero tropes (Transformation Power-Ups + Monsters of the Week + Violence and Explosions etc...) that ironically the Tropes that people "think" are Magical Girls draw a lot more from another - arguably more male saturated - genre type rather than emphasizing what makes mahou [SHOUJO] different (the emphasis on lower-stake, slice-of-life conflicts, and other Pierrot rules that are increasingly forgotten), like just emblemized from Lyrical Nanoha's shift further from "what if the Magic was Space tech" into now "NANOHA TAKAMICHI IS STRAIGHT UP THE RX-78 GUNDAM, NUKES AND ALL". 5) I'll NEVER forgive the Anime fans neglect for Yuki Yuna treated as "a lesser Madoka", largely the wishy-washiness of the every other viewer (people felt baited by handicap representation, edgelords wanted MORE DEATH [Season 2 and 3 exist], People kept riding Urobuchi's ego, etc...). Which is a funny turn around with how much hate Magia Record wound up getting when I see it almost par for par as "a Lesser Part 2 Yuki Yuna". 6) I must confess, it's hard to find any "The power is also a metaphor/symbol of the wielder herself" in other Magical Girl or even other Hero shows generally, beyond like Aesthetic (see most battle shounen etc...) it's almost "so obvious, why didn't anyone else think of it sooner", minus the obvious toy-centric nature, I can only really think of things post-Madoka: Wonder Egg Priority or MagiCami.....that or Bakemonogatari (every girl's supernatural phenomena is caused by their own personal trauma's and coping mechanisms).
I was introduced to doujinshi as a non-sexual thing so was surprised when that's the major view of it. Same with fanfic like so many people just think it's just smut everywhere. Wonder what's up with that? People just think fans be horny all the time and that's it?

Right, but the point was the loss of third spaces and the increase in children staying home to play with friends in online games has generally resulted in kids gravitating toward and acquiring skills for something that generally doesn't have a lot of overlap with much. It's not that the "thing" has changed, there will always be people who just want to be well known for the sake of it and nothing else, so much as the loss of other avenues for expression generally has seemed to result in a lot of kids being a bit aimless and finding it harder to pin down what they want to do because they didn't engage with many different things when they were younger. This has been a problem since I was younger, but it seems like it only is getting worse as we continue to expect kids to know what they want to do with the rest of their lives and commit a significant amount of time and money into something while society generally continues to trend toward limiting their experiences be it because of parents worried about their children being hurt or their friends just generally being more accessible on an online game than they are at the park or something. I'd have to look at some statistics, but I'd imagine more kids spending more of their time engaging with games generally results in more kids wanting to get into the game industry in some capacity despite maybe not being inclined toward skills that generally would take them further in the field like programming and result in them having to try and find something else, oftentimes in university when it's not exactly cheap or easy. It's just something our current system hasn't really addressed since it benefits it to have kids strap themselves up with debt trying to figure out what they want to do.
I actually like Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku pretty much. And Mahoiku appeared at the same time as Madoka, so it is not really a copy at all. Do you like Uta Kata? Thats my favorite one.
I (Mumi) actually haven't gotten around to Uta Kata yet. It's been one of those I keep pushing off because it's so short I figure I can watch it any time and just never ended up watching it.

Its a story about growing up and facing the things that you were kinda protected from in your childhood and might hurt you a lot. I'm looking forward to rewatch it, but i'm just lazy.
