IMO, this decline in box office revenue has been a long time coming. Super-Hero movies and big blockbuster sequels like Jurassic Park and Star Wars made the industry look like it was on the up, but the masses are no longer interested (unless its exceptionally good). Moreover, it's hard to justify going to a theater when most TVs are 4k, 65-80 inches at home.

Honestly there just aren’t enough movies that are exceptional enough to want to go out and spend instead of just watching at home for free. Dune 2 was possibly the only movie I was looking forward to for the whole year.
How do you know what movies will be exceptional before you see them? I've seen 50 movies this year so far in the cinema and the majority were enjoyable there. Dune was not the best film either. For 2024 calender year films (not just films I from 2023 that only came out in 2024 for me), Challengers is probably the best so far but I've only seen about 10 of those.

More men went to see womder woman then women. I agree most women world wide grew up with barbie so that made it a whole event. Event movies are gonna be the future, but regular movies are done. Everybody simply waits till they are on streaming......and rightfully so.
I really think having a female lead is irrelevant when it comes to getting women into theaters. It’s not about the lead it’s about the brand. Mad Max is a “boy brand,” and that’s who’s going to come out and see the movie. Barbie is a “girl brand”and that’s why it did so well with women. Same with a lot of the successful YA franchises that came out a few years ago.
> Hollywood: were gonna lower the theatrical prestige of movies by throwing EVERYTHING that does not do incredible blockbuster numbers on digital within two weeks > Audience: *stops watching movies that are not events in theatres and waits for digital* > Hollywood: 😮
Absolutely agreed. One example that comes to mind is Transforners last year. It was announced that it will be on streaming a month after release. Now im not saying that the movie exceptional or whatever, but man a new Transformers frachise after that Unicron teaser would be nice. Like you said, blockbusters have to do incredible numbers nowadays, it kills the event experience of moviegoing. The Ed Norton Hulk made like half of the Iron Man box office, nowadays it would mean no more MCU
I spent $60 to go see fruriosa with my wife this weekend. That’s why we don’t go that often. I’ll rather wait till it’s on digital and maybe spend $20 so my family of 4 could see the movie.
Understandable but there's a huge difference between the Theater and at Home. You're not gonna get the same experience from premium tickets like IMAX or something crazy like 4DX.

Loads of good and/ or successful movies have not been asked for. If they’d only make movies people ask for then it would be over for movies pretty quickly 😏
People forget Black Adam made more at the box office than MM Fury road....and people though a prequel would work? Hollywood really is lost in the source!!!
America is not in financial trouble. There is no evidence or numbers to support that. It is Hollywood specifically. The internet killed interest in watching movies in theaters.
@@davidssockandlotion high employment, inflation has been mostly tamed, real GDP growth looks good, people are spending a healthy amount on physical goods in spite of increased costs. These do not make for an economy that is in the gutter
Considering how much Fury road made I knew Furiosa wouldn't do that well, it's never been a mainstream movie franchise. Also they didn't do the movie any favors by getting rid of Mad Max, I liked it but they could've knocked off 15 minutes at the end. Taking too long between movies probably doesn't help either, Road Warrior will always be my favorite.
Something to keep in mind about the theater experience, and all chain style businesses, is that they reflect the people who live in the area. Both the workers and the customers are from the local community.
I think Most younger people just aren't as engaged with film as other generations. It's all about short form entertainment or video games. I think their are other factors as you have mentioned, but thats one that doesn't get spoken about as much
I saw Furiosa twice this weekend, not because I wanted to but because two friends from different circles both asked me to go with them on different days and I'm an A-List member. It was fine, but I can tell you no one I talked to when Furiosa was announced was excited this was the direction they were taking the franchise. We would have much rather seen how the Citadel was founded and a rise of Immortan Joe story if you were going to do a prequel sans Max. What we actually wanted to see was a sequel with Tom Hardy as Max, sadly that is likely to never happen. I thought this was Chris Hemsworth's best acting job as an over the top psychopath, such a departure from his normal roles. Anya Taylor-Joy was fine in the role but didn't bring much to the screen. The way Hollywood can make a come back is smaller budgeted movies that are targeted to specific audiences. Great video Grace!

Yep, that's one of the reasons I pretty much only go to Alamo Drafthouse now. It's so quiet and the food and drink section is fantastic. On top of that, the no talking and texting policy is amazing.
Lol, just like streaming services we'd need to keep track of 6 different theaters if each studio owned their own chain. Sounds like typical Hollywood exec thinking that destroyed the industry in the first place.
National Amusements (who owns paramount) already owns a chain of theaters. I work at one right now. You can easily google it. Idk what Grace is talking about. And we play all of the movies regardless of studio. We’d loose sooo much money if we didn’t. Like right now the biggest Paramount movie out is IF. Which is doing just okay. I have 15 auditoriums at my location. We couldn’t just show IF in all of them. We’d be closed in a week. 😂
@jairbear619 Im in Michigan, so it's a state only chain called MJR. It wasn't entirely empty, but it's to the point that our location is considered one of the best for business, and there was like 90 ppl at max that day. However, Memorial Day was actually pretty busy.
I’m just really sad. I enjoyed Furiosa, but I saw it in a premium format theater that was practically empty. I talked to the theater manager out of curiosity, and he admitted this is the worst Memorial Day weekend he’s seen since the pandemic. I really hope theaters can bounce back next month with Inside Out 2 and Bad Boys 4!
i dont think its a quality issue cause godzilla x kong was poorly written but still made bank. The real problem is mass appeal. Furiosa was never gonna have blockbuster appeal
Eh I don’t think the audience cares about quality that much. Ticket prices are too much and streaming services are tough competition as there’s always something new available to watch at home (the month of June alone is crazy for streaming this year).
That's because Fury Road was advertised as a Mad Max Movie. That's why, just like Marvel's couldn't repeat what Captain Marvel did because it was sandwiched between major cliffhanger and told it was important to the story of End Game.
You know what? I agree. There is a tension in the air. A possibility. I might be nuts. I have no desire to see Fallout. I love the Mad Max franchise. That being said it can be seen through a depressing lens.
You think if Charlize Theron as Furiosa in this movie will save this movie. Fury Road was a flop too. They only made this movie because it got a bunch of oscar nomination & George Miller, you know, the creator of this franchise wanted to make this movie. And didn't Charlize Theron movie, Atomic Blond, also bombed in the box office? Audiences don't flock to theaters anymore becaue of the stars anymore.
I feel it too Grace. The movie going business has changed for sure. I feel safer and more comfortable at home and there are great options at home. 💁🏻♀️
People heavily invested in their home theatres during COVID and not in the movies. It cost way too much now just to go to the movies especially for a family.
Maybe it’s the area of the country I’m in (coastal Louisiana/Mississippi) but I am an avid movie theater goer and I do not ever have bad experiences. I go almost every other week. 1000% correct. This is the pink elephant in the room that a lot of entertainment analysts and journalists are doing their best to ignore. She was the right actress playing the right character in the right story but George Miller, as brilliant as he is, fucked up on that one.
@@addovoltproductions I agree. Love Miller but the movie did not work, Anya Taylor Joy is a great actress but this role? Not many people can pull this off. What Charlize like portraying every different emotion without speaking, in seconds, and the physicality (which is not only doing the stunts, it's acting while doing them) and actually building the character - the iconic scene where Furiosa goes on her knees and screams, was her idea. This movie should not be made without her.
Nope, plenty of original films coming out all the time, though admittedly not by the big studios. Netflix and Prime make plenty of derivative garbage and IP nonsense. Didn't Amazon just release Fallout? That's not original. Netflix released Avatar.
Hitting digital quickly has probably been a big reason for box office issues. Dune, Oppenheimer, Dune 2 were all made with such stunning visuals and marketed so well for their visuals that it made lots of people feel they needed to see it in theaters. I’m sure Furiosa looks great on the big screen, but it hasn’t had the same hype nor marketing. Barbie was such an event for an incredibly iconic toy that SOOOO many grew up with. And there was the tandem experience with Oppenheimer that likely benefited both of them. So I think it’s movie quality, marketing, and hitting digital so quickly. And yes, stars being on social media and in so many other places now. It makes them feel more ordinary.
Grace i think you are poke to say audience behavior is ruining the theater experience but the audience is a big part of the theater experience. More often than not the audience for me had enhanced the movie whether it's the crowd all gasping in shock at the same moment or applauding together after an amazing story moment or someone in the audience making an hilarious timely comment on the movie. I will never forget seeing avengers for the first time in theaters and during the final fight when hawkeye shot an arrow at loki and loki caught it, my entire audience gasped and in the same moment someone in the crowd shouted "wait for it" and a second later the store explored in Loki's face. And i think we all have many story of unforgettable audience moments while at the theaters. That's the reason people go to the theater. The problem isn't people behavior at theaters or movies are just bad. The problem is the studios aren't presenting these movies as theatrical experiences. Barbie was a theatrical experience, you had to see it in theaters or you'd miss the party, dune we a theatrical experience, you had to be there. As someone who loves going to the movies, there are so few movies that come out nowadays that make me genuinely excited to see it in theaters. Most of the times i see the trailer and whatever franchise they are bringing back and none of it excites me and i feel a lot of people feel the same.

Whereas back in the day of Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, you could RENT a movie and have it for like a week for very little money. These studios are ridiculously greedy nowadays. Even streaming is getting greedier with all these ads and price increases.
The reason Bridgerton season 3 was lower than season 2 was because Netflix only released 4 episodes. If it was the full binge like it was before, it would have been absolutely insane numbers. Netflix is undercutting the perception of the popularity of their shows by breaking it up in half. Even the way you introduced the numbers Grace, with out that context, would make anyone think it’s losing popularity when it’s not.
Movie theaters should start working on making every movie an inmersive experience, not just selling the popcorn bucket of the popular movie. Also start bulding more premium screens damnit
I believe the movie theater experience is over because of: 1. Weak writing. Cable and streaming writing has a better average than movie writing for over a decade. Even some video games have better writing and acting. 2. It's expensive. 3. Lousy theater experience either because of the theater comfort or because of the audience. 4. Many travel for entertainment businesses aren't doing well. People can be entertained turning on a computer or TV. 5. Home entertainment systems have gotten cheaper and better including and the VR headset technology. Then there are people that watch movies on their smart phones.

Grace you want to come up with all these reasons. It’s simple it cost a family of 4 100$ for tickets and snacks. You have to really really want to see something at the theaters these days.
The cost to go is too much for regular/routine movie theater outings in todays marketplace. The theater experience hasn't changed in 10 years, the quality of movies haven't changed... what I can get w/ my money has
For every person you see scrolling on their phone in a movie theatre there are a 100 people who no longer go because they know they can't handle sitting still for 2-3 hours without their phone.
They seem to be ignoring demographics. Same for gaming industry. The kids simply don't see movies/entertainment the same way.

No shit, Sherlock!

Nobody asked for a fourth Mad Max film either, but Fury Road did okay. And last year, no one had been asking for films about Barbie dolls or the first atomic bombs.

I'm mostly interested in indie and foreign language films, so I definitely don't want to see studios owning the movie theaters.
Furiosa was WAY too long. It became stale real quick
@@SwiftlySpeakingPR I did yawn in the last 10 minutes.
Road Warrior had the mind to make the wasteland the main character, with Max and Humongous and the GasCorp as players.
Something to keep in mind about the theater experience, and all chain style businesses, is that they reflect the people who live in the area. Both the workers and the customers are from the local community.
I think Most younger people just aren't as engaged with film as other generations. It's all about short form entertainment or video games. I think their are other factors as you have mentioned, but thats one that doesn't get spoken about as much
In other words it's about trash (short form "entertainment) and video games (a hollow replacement for narrative storytelling).
Great point unfortunately
They are more into tik tok and basically are fine with waiting till it hits streaming
You are 100% right. Cinema as an artform just doesn't resonate with younger audiences
Spot on
I saw Furiosa twice this weekend, not because I wanted to but because two friends from different circles both asked me to go with them on different days and I'm an A-List member.
Can't put mid movies in theatres when we can see mid movies at home.
nobody can save movies till they want to save themselves. lower budgets and lower ticket prices are the way to go. people shouldn't choose between having a meal or taking your kids or spouse to the movies

1000% correct. This is the pink elephant in the room that a lot of entertainment analysts and journalists are doing their best to ignore. She was the right actress playing the right character in the right story but George Miller, as brilliant as he is, fucked up on that one.
Making a mad Max movie with no Max
@@addovoltproductions I agree. Love Miller but the movie did not work, Anya Taylor Joy is a great actress but this role? Not many people can pull this off. What Charlize like portraying every different emotion without speaking, in seconds, and the physicality (which is not only doing the stunts, it's acting while doing them) and actually building the character - the iconic scene where Furiosa goes on her knees and screams, was her idea. This movie should not be made without her.
Hollywood is too risk averse, original content can be found on Netflix or Prime.
Nope, plenty of original films coming out all the time, though admittedly not by the big studios. Netflix and Prime make plenty of derivative garbage and IP nonsense. Didn't Amazon just release Fallout? That's not original. Netflix released Avatar.
Plenty of original movies coming out yet many don't support them.
Making a mad max movie without Max … brilliant
“Avoid the theater to see the movie on streaming sooner!”
Oh man, theaters are screwed.
Tickets are way too much now. Gotta choose wisely

FURIOUSA was amazing! it deserves better!
I loved Garfield, it was great!

Hollywood’s many problems; too much spending, too much messaging, too much audience apathy.
Movie theaters should start working on making every movie an inmersive experience, not just selling the popcorn bucket of the popular movie. Also start bulding more premium screens damnit
Indeed, more Imax, less regular screens and smaller theathers.....
I believe the movie theater experience is over because of:
Every week the same thing.
It gets proven again and again ppl are done with Hwood - you are trying to make it look like this isn’t true. It’s getting pitiful on your part at this point.

Well that settles it the majority of women DO NOT care for blockbusters even if they're as amazing as Furiosa. Studios need not try to cater to them to reel them in anymore because they just don't care. (Unless its something like Barbie)
Grace you want to come up with all these reasons. It’s simple it cost a family of 4 100$ for tickets and snacks. You have to really really want to see something at the theaters these days.
I don't want Hollywood to burn, Grace. I love movies - all types: highbrow independents AND popcorn summer blockbusters.
The cost to go is too much for regular/routine movie theater outings in todays marketplace. The theater experience hasn't changed in 10 years, the quality of movies haven't changed... what I can get w/ my money has
but in terms of Garfield. It was projected to do 30 for the 4 day so 31 is solid for that. Its lower budget means it will definitely make a profit
For every person you see scrolling on their phone in a movie theatre there are a 100 people who no longer go because they know they can't handle sitting still for 2-3 hours without their phone.

That’s awful. Get off your phones and read a book, take a walk. I’m Gen Z and I’m scared for us…
They seem to be ignoring demographics. Same for gaming industry. The kids simply don't see movies/entertainment the same way. Movies aren't big events for them like they used to be, these franchises mean less and less, they would rather watch tiktoks and livestreams of their favorites rather than sit in a theater. If they are watching a movie it's probably on discord with their friends.
I think that is a huge change that no one saw coming but it might actually end up being more consequential than even streaming.
