Once movie critique became a big part of TH-cam and online culture in general, Signs' reputation was diminished some by people that focused too much on the design of the aliens and their weakness being one of the most prevalent things found on Earth. Y'all nailed it on the head that this is a family drama dealing with loss, grief and faith where the supernatural element is there to drive that character growth.
I mean it was a really stupid critique. If those aliens never saw water before of course they wouldn’t assume it was dangerous. And they went over the strategies of the aliens a few times. They were there for exploration and test the Human Resources and see if they could combat humans
The water critique has always been so stupid to me. They’re there to explore and most likely didn’t come into contact with water on their home planet. If they’ve never been in contact with water then they don’t know it’s a weakness. Like a little kid who eats peanut butter for the first time and has an allergic reaction to it or something, you don’t know you’re allergic until you’re exposed to it.
Exactly! Not to mention those same goofballs who complained about the aliens and their weakness completely ignore the fact that us humans do LITERALLY THE EXACT SAME THING. We go into every hostile environment imaginable in search of a mix of resources or other. We can’t survive in space yet we go. We can’t survive naturally on mars yet we are trying to go, etc. thats what intelligent species do.
I think they knew about the water and consistency. None of the crop signs were near water. I figured they didn't think we'd use water for defense versus our guns and knives to protect ourselves. I mean, look, reaction folks sometimes talk too much and jump to conclusions with criticisms of movies. Sure, their passionate viewers love the shock value of being blunt or savage. But many times, their questions would be answered by just keeping quiet.
I read somewhere that the aliens were pitched in the original script as demons and it was gonna be about like a massive demonic event which would explain the faith tie ins and almost holy water like weakness.

As much as this film showcases their grief and coping with it, it is also about (maybe more) Gibson's character reclaiming his faith. His wife died ultimately to save her family by God's hand so she could pass her message.. Morgan was supposed to have asthma so the poison wouldn't affect him, Merrill was an epic hitter and said himself it felt wrong not to swing. The little girl's phobia with water produced a weapon available immediately. In the end Graham "saw" that none of it was coincidence and God had set everything up for them and he boldly encouraged Merrill to swing away. Ergo; Signs. This is not an alien invasion movie. It's about a man who lost & regains his faith. Alien invasion is just the backdrop. Other than the water thing being a little iffy, this movie is amazing.
So I saw this theaters with a friend of mine. When it was over, it was dark out. We live in a rural area, and her house was in the MIDDLE OF A CORN FIELD. We legit sat in her driveway for 15-20 minutes scared to get out and go inside. Then we freaked her mom out when we ran in as fast as we could and asked for glasses of water! 😂 This movie will never NOT freak me out!
I never got why some people take issue with the water thing. Humans go plenty of places that are very dangerous because we want something there. Coal mines, Deadliest Catch-type fishermen, and so on.
I think it also had to be specifically the bacteria/microbes that were in the water that was deadly to the aliens. Similar to War of the Worlds. Bo does mention it multiple times throughout the movie that the water tastes weird to her and she even says the word bacteria when she's talking about it. Flew over most peoples heads I guess
it doesn’t make sense because it would be like humans going to mars butt naked. it’s stupid for any space faring species to just be going to random planets completely exposed especially if they’re trying to take over.
@@alexandervelez9507thing is, are they alien thoughts? I mean did you actually see any space ships in the movie? Me neither. So if we're gonna assume they are actually something else entirely, like demons or ghost, them being weak against water (and not just any water, but water specifically drawn in the house of a priest by a girl continuously described as an angel, aka holy water) actually makes a lot more sense.
@alexandervelez9507. The aliens weren’t trying to take over & colonize. If you had listened to the radio reports towards the end of the movie the voice clearly says they were not here for the planet. They came to harvest humans so their plan was not to stay permanently. It was just a stop over to stock up. Just like hunters do not stay in the woods for the rest of their lives when they go hunting. They bag their deer/elk & go home. Same with industrial fishing. The fishermen don’t stay on the boats in the middle of the ocean for decades. They catch their limit & head back to shore.
I got my first cell phone for Christmas 2002 as a senior in high school. Obviously many people had them, but they weren't everywhere yet. And we still had a land line with fax machine.
Keep in mind Mel Ott was 5’9”, 170 lb. And hit 511 home runs. Part of that was the stadium, but some players have superb vision and connect ball with bat in a violent manner.
One of Shyamalan’s classic films right next to The Sixth Sense! I remembered watching this at a movie theater back in 2002 located in a Marine Corps Base (have an uncle who served). The whole theater erupted with shrieks and jumps when it came to the most tense moments surrounding the characters and the unknown creature stalking them around their house. Glad to rewatch this with reactors like you guys!
Signs is one of those films that I've rewatched many times and it still manages to surprise me with every rewatch. I get some people thinking it's too corny, too sentimental, or felt that there was a mismatch between the subject matter (alien invasion) and the themes (reclaiming lost faith), but I always found the film deeply human and beautiful. It remains a classic for me and I will continue to revisit for years to come. It's always interesting seeing people's reactions to it when you know it's their first viewing.
The misunderstanding is blown out of proportion. They still enjoyed the film and the two of them never referred to it again during or after the film, so it obviously wasn’t that big of a deal at all
In my opinion this movie is the most accurate and horrifying alien movie to exist. The crops, the talk amongst the people, the news, the flashes of the aliens and then the final battle, Oh my Lord. That last 45 minutes is phenomenal, and that music is Iconic
It’s not that we didn’t have cellphones it’s that the coverage especially in rural areas were crap. It would be easier to call the house phone because you probably would know the number by heart
the movie was also about faith and fate. the little girl has always had the thing with water with the glasses everywhere. the mother saying swing away. it all aligned at the right time to save his son and then the lungs being closed to the gas.
I really liked this movie. I went to the movies to see this when it first was in theaters. M. Night Shyamalan is capable of making great films!I I also really liked "the Village" which is another M. Night movie Joaquin Phoenix was in. It has a great cast with Bryce Dallas Howard, William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, Adrian Brody etc. I had a TracFone in 2001- 2002(which was basically just for using emergencies or short conversations lol, and then I upgraded to the Nokia.
The movie is not about grief. It’s about faith. It’s clear as day in the couch scene. Even “see” and “swing away” was to be a double meaning of “see” and “sea” for water. Whether that was Gibson’s reason for doing it or Shyamalan’s idk, but it’s obvious. Also, for anyone who didn’t know, he’s an Episcopal priest in the movie, kind of strange since Mel Gibson is so prolifically Catholic.

There is a giant cross at the end of the film on the door molding, symbolizing a giant renewed Faith.
Great choice guys. Really like Mel in this one. Would love you to react to him, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart in CONSPIRACY THEORY (1997) Action/Thriller Directed by Richard Donner (who also dir. Superman 1978). Mel is on top form, great character work.
Here’s my take: So the dad (Graham) had lost his faith bc God didn’t save his wife and thus tried to conform to a new belief system that everything is just random, and there’s no one that’s looking out for anyone. In the other hand Merrill still believes, and is uneasy when Graham loses his faith. Graham says there’s two kinds of people essentially; those who believe everything is random and no one is looking out for us and the others who “SEE” the signs and believe that they’re miracles and that NOTHING is a coincidence. And from the beginning we see that (1) Morgan is a very serious child, who is really protective of his sister + he was BORN with asthma. (2) Beau is a very intuitive child, who dreams vividly and actually gets “feelings” about events that are going to happen, especially when it involves someone she loves AND she has an OBSESSION about WATER, and so she ends up finding things wrong with each glass, consequently there are MANY glasses of water scattered all throughout the house. Morgan tells the librarian she’s HAD IT SINCE BIRTH. Merrill had a mad baseball record which won him a plaque with a BAT MOUNTED ON THE WALL in the living room, but never had a “career” bc he had so many strike-outs. SO he ends up moving in with his brother when the wife dies. (That’s what put him in the right place at the right time.) Ray, who feels deep guilt for what happened to Graham’s wife, even says “It’s like it was meant to be.” Which you both admitted was a strange thing to say. HOWEVER when the wife was talking to Graham before she passed, SHE commented that “IT WAS MEANT TO BE “. She said 4 things: “Tell Morgan (the serious one) it’s ok to play games” and “Tell Beau to listen to her big brother bc he’ll always protect her” and “Tell Graham (even tho she was talking to Graham) to “SEE”” and “Tell Merrill to SWING AWAY!” In the end Morgan’s asthma saved his life (his lungs were closed so no poison got in), Graham understands and finally SEES what his wife was trying to tell him that day, Merrill’s ability to swing hard took the alien down so that Beau’s obsession with the water then killed it. And all this to say that Graham realized that ALL those things happened for a reason….for THIS day that the aliens invaded!! 😊 Graham realizes that there really are no coincidences. He BELIEVES IN MIRACLES again; and that restores his faith that someone is really out there looking out for us. 😊 ❤ Yes, it was definitely more about the family and their healing than the aliens. 😊 Great reaction guys!!! Thank you so much!
His best film. I remember going to see it opening night the summer between 8th grade and high school and I said the word “shit” out loud at least 150 times. Intense, so effective. He needs to find this M Night again.
It's called a reaction. I feel like everyone on Reel Rejects talks WAY too much during the movie. That scene where he flips the page to the burning farm house is one of the creepiest and best scenes in the whole movie and you were too busy talking about if aliens wear clothes. Lol I just wish you guys would just react to the actual scene and not get sidetracked by random stuff.
It’s like a creepy, eerie, super suspenseful Alfred Hitchcokien horror movie. That Brazilian birthday party scene was so shocking the first time I saw it! So eerie! 🫨👀. I love the message of hope, faith and perseverance dispite losing a loved one and dealing with the unexplained (the invasion).
If you're a fan of cobra kai - little Samantha was abigals stand in. The beginning scene when uncle Merle is running through the corn field and she turns her head to the camera and he puts her head on his shoulder - that's one of her scenes
Rewatching this thinking Demons from below instead of Aliens from above puts an entirely new perspective on it & the few issues I had with it are now gone. Brilliant film.
There was also an interesting theory about the aliens, that they were there to harvest as much as they could because they were desperate themselves, invading a planet with their one weakness, and that they're usually seen alone almost as if they're unorganized and one of the aliens captured on tv is clearly scared and hunched over and looks off to the direction it eventually walks over to, like it was hesitant.
Probably my favorite M Night movie. Loved all of the suspense woven in to the story of this grieving family. The children weren't just background noise, but important to the whole story. I loved the flashbacks to the wife/mother's death. The terror of the aliens invested me in these characters very quickly. And I cannot count the times in life I have said or heard, "I am insane with anger." Lightens up many aggravated situations. ✌💖😃
My favorite M.Night film… it hits every time you watch. I love that Andrew has such an appreciation for James Newton Howard- what a talent!! Andrew, have you listened to The Prince of Tides score?? It wrecks me, along with the film!❤ Great reaction, guys!!🤞
Those kids are are so stinkin cute! And we got amazing performances from Mel and Juaquin. I enjoyed the jump scares in the movie, but I loved the message behind it. This is one of my favorites
I keep waiting for someone to realize that when the brother throws the rock into the cornfield, no birds fly away. They're gone. Why would the birds be gone, hmmmm?
In case you were wondering. Young children are usually heavy sleepers. They can sleep through fire alarms and probably earthquakes. And in my Mexican family my young causins have slept through loud party and music blasting with out an issue 😂
Mel Gibson may have some questionable moments in his life but no one can deny he’s a damn fine actor especially when it comes to holding back tears or showing emotion. Mel Gibson cry I cry
Its interesting you say its very Hitchcockian. 1) because M Night has said Hitchcock was one of his favorite directors, and 2) this film, aside from the ending, is very much like the original short story "the Birds" that the hitchcock film was based on. and I say the short story, because hitchcock's film, while great, didn't really fully capture that overwhelming sense of dread that permeated the entire story. this film, on the other hand, matches it almost exactly, and actually follows that story almost beat for beat until the climax. even the trip into town. also, yeah, their weakness was revealed to actually be holy water, not just water in general. the implication was that, as a priest, he would have blessed his own well. and it was common practice for town priests to bless the wells of the people in the town also, hence Ray. (meaning, going to the lake might have been the worst thing he could do.)
@@Sofiwofi21uh oh I don’t know all the details but I hope that comment was because he might’ve been racist towards Puerto Ricans, and not because “Puerto Ricans can’t be racist” (I’m Puerto Rican and I hate hearing that lmao)
For clarity's sake, they thought his character in this movie said something racist (when he really said something sextet, not racist). Lol, so it's not a knock on the actor, they just misunderstood a line in the movie.
@@mynameisnotearl4383 you maybe should move on to other reaction channels then, Greg even included a clip of himself laughing at that part while editing it saying "this is staying in!" Another M. Night Shyamalan movie with a water theme is Lady in the Water. It's not nearly as good as this one or Unbreakable, but it's not as bad as a lot of people would have you believe. I kinda liked it, actually.
Or just reacting to a natural stimulus, that well-adjusted individuals would be taken aback. Maybe stop trying to use any excuse to justify your flawed world view.
There are two things I don't understand about this film: 1: Aliens have mastered space flight but can't get through a wooden door? 2: If aliens are allergic to water, why did they come to a planet that is 71 percent water?
I have always assumed they were essentially alien frat boys on a joyride. Their parents always said "don't go to this poison planet" but they were all like "ayyyyyylmao"
Some of the logic definitely doesn't make sense, like the pantry door scene. I always assumed it wasn't specifically water that the aliens were allergic to but the bacteria/microbes that were in the water. Similar to War of the Worlds.
We've mastered fire with lighters. Can you make a fire with just sticks? Things evolving to the point that something basic to us is unheard of from them, explains that. At some point, some things and knowledge become obsolete. Again, using humans as an example, we go to every dangerous place available. Why wouldn't other species?
1: Space travel weakens the body, out bodies anyway. I don't know their physiology so all this is a conjecture. 2: This is where the food is. The real question is why did they not take the time to develop environmental protection suits that did not interfere with harvesting.
with the water it must be they don't know what water dose to them so they come without knowing that's why in the movie on the radio it said there leaving and the Woodend been left behind they realise shit we f up time to leave and the wooden door it was blocked off by a wardrobe it was stuck either way but later in movie you do see him trying to get in there basement turning the door knob and mell Gibson grab the door knob
I've read somewhere that originally it was going to be a little more on the nose and that they weren't aliens but demons. I think I appreciate it more as aliens though. Also, the baby monitor only goes off twice in this movie, both times when the family is all connected. First is the scene on the car, and the second is during the breakdown at dinner when they're all hugging each other. I always loved that touch and what it represents in handling their grief.
Y'all should try M. Night's The Village. I feel like it's severely underrated and simply got a bad rep because it was advertised as a horror movie when it's really not a horror movie. One of my all time faves. 💖
Underrated movie. Love the idea that this family was knit together to survive this exact threat. I have always liked both Aaron and Andrew collabs with the original RR crew. They are an excellent reaction duo.

Please consider reacting to "The Village". It's such an underrated M. Night Shyamalan film and has an incredible cast!
I remember that one! Didn't Joaquin Phoenix star in that one, too?
@@robbinsnest6163 Yes!
💯
I love The Village. That and Signs are my favorite M Night movies.
Such a good movie. People hate on it but I see nothing wrong with the movie
😂 This movie will never NOT freak me out!
interesting side note, all the times you heard crickets chirping were an indication that things were safe, they stopped when the aliens were nearby.
All I know is one day we spray Aliens with super soakers, and then they're pissed and kill us off with guns like "Mars Attacks."
Andrew at 4:40 makes me want to start a petition that he will watch all the horror films. 😂
one of M. Night's best movies. Its a classic!
He's not racist
You’re correct, we clearly heard incorrectly
I got my first cell phone for Christmas 2002 as a senior in high school. Obviously many people had them, but they weren't everywhere yet. And we still had a land line with fax machine.
Probably "roaming charges," in the corn field, too. =D
After hearing the misunderstanding, I can’t unhear it. It legit sounded like that’s what he said. I completely understand the issue now.
No it didnt
Tbh at 26 years old this movie still traumatized me 😂, and my favorite movie growing up
Signs is one of those films that I've rewatched many times and it still manages to surprise me with every rewatch.
Rank the M. Night Shyamalan cameos... GO!!
I liked M Sham’s cameo in Unbreakable and Signs
The time he ate tiramisu with zoey deschanel in The Happening 😂😂😂
lol that must’ve been a great Cameo from him, I don’t think I’ve seen the happening. I loved Zoey Deschanel in New Girl and her humour is palpable.
He should have been one of the personalities in Split.
He's cameo in The Village is underrated!
The misunderstanding is blown out of proportion. They still enjoyed the film and the two of them never referred to it again during or after the film, so it obviously wasn’t that big of a deal at all
Exactly, thank you 🙏
In my opinion this movie is the most accurate and horrifying alien movie to exist.
A cool thing to me is that I grew up and still live in Bucks County. A lot of the movie was filmed about forty minutes from me.
“You can blink, it’s okay” I lost it lol. That guy was intense. 👀
NO MATTER HIS PERSONAL ISUES, MEL GIBSON IS A FINE ACTOR, SO MUCH SAID WITH HIS EYES...👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤❤❤❤❤
please tell me the guys were made aware of their misunderstanding?
Yes we were lol and I usually watch films with subtitles but we didn’t watch this film with subtitles so that’s why we thought we heard what we did
Talked over thr best part of thr movie
Great choice guys. Really like Mel in this one. Would love you to react to him, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart in CONSPIRACY THEORY (1997) Action/Thriller Directed by Richard Donner (who also dir. Superman 1978). Mel is on top form, great character work.
This movie always makes me cry because of how they point out that everything happens for a reason, and that he gets his faith back
Here’s my take: So the dad (Graham) had lost his faith bc God didn’t save his wife and thus tried to conform to a new belief system that everything is just random, and there’s no one that’s looking out for anyone.
So eerie! 🫨👀. I love the message of hope, faith and perseverance dispite losing a loved one and dealing with the unexplained (the invasion).
i remember watching this as a kid and that tv birthday party scene left me scarred for years
If you're a fan of cobra kai - little Samantha was abigals stand in.
Before I watch the reaction, just want to say, Signs is one of my top 3 all time favorite movies. Let's go Rejects, happy you react to this :D
4:40 lmaoooo Andrew's nerves are like, paper thin lol🤣
This is my favourite movie, the way mel gibson stands at that window and clearly sees something but we dont see it is great!
Morgan is Macaulay Culkin’s brother.
Great jump scare reaction, Andrew. 😱
The stories of the children's birth are actually the stories of M Night Shyamalan's two children.
Misunderstanding or 2 idiots you decide
One of M Night's films that I genuinely think is phenomenal.
The reason this film is so great is because the alien are only on screen for 1:30. It makes it so much more intriguing
I can't hear "ring that bell" without hearing Tara singing 🎶
At the end where everything is connecting gives me the chills like majorly …
Those kids are are so stinkin cute! And we got amazing performances from Mel and Juaquin. I enjoyed the jump scares in the movie, but I loved the message behind it. This is one of my favorites
I keep waiting for someone to realize that when the brother throws the rock into the cornfield, no birds fly away. They're gone. Why would the birds be gone, hmmmm?
Also... The story of the kids being born was supposedly the actual story of M Knights kids births.
Honestly, I love Aaron and Andrew together. I ran to my TV when I saw them reacting together this morning.
It’s impossible to put into words how traumatizing that birthday party scene was to everyone who first saw this movie as a kid 😂
29:45 bruh when I was a kid that birthday party video always freaked me out
YESSSSSSS! One of my all time faves
In case you were wondering. Young children are usually heavy sleepers. They can sleep through fire alarms and probably earthquakes. And in my Mexican family my young causins have slept through loud party and music blasting with out an issue 😂
Me: “Mel Gibson’s tears always make me cry.”
Mel Gibson: “Stop Crying!”
Mel Gibson may have some questionable moments in his life but no one can deny he’s a damn fine actor especially when it comes to holding back tears or showing emotion. Mel Gibson cry I cry
48:45 you mentioned the Unbreakable score while they were showing a broken bat, awesome lol
Absolutely love this movie. The meaning behind it always was touching to me and it has amazing acting. Can't go wrong with Mel Gibson
My favorite fan theory, which is now my headcanon, is that the aliens are demons and the water is holy water Graham blessed before he lost his faith.
Loved watching you guys watch this one!!! 🫶🏼👽
The next reaction Aaron and Andrew do together, I want them to apologize to Joaquin for calling him a racist throughout this reaction.
Yeah what was that all about? Greg really needs to get reactors who aren’t idiots.
@@mynameisnotearl4383 you maybe should move on to other reaction channels then, Greg even included a clip of himself laughing at that part while editing it saying "this is staying in!"
I have ADHD and will miss hear or misunderstand half of a movie without subtitles 😅
I love it, these reactors are real people with a variety of experiences, perspectives, and spice.
@@lisabeloved I’m fine thank you. I’ll Listen to whoever I want, you do not control me or my viewing habits.
This is my favorite Shyamalan movie!
This is one of the situations that could have been prevented if they left the sprinklers on right before the invasion.
Another M. Night Shyamalan movie with a water theme is Lady in the Water. It's not nearly as good as this one or Unbreakable, but it's not as bad as a lot of people would have you believe. I kinda liked it, actually.
This reaction contains an example of what happens when you get hypersensitive and look to be offended.
Or just reacting to a natural stimulus, that well-adjusted individuals would be taken aback. Maybe stop trying to use any excuse to justify your flawed world view.
There are two things I don't understand about this film:
1: Aliens have mastered space flight but can't get through a wooden door?
(26:30) The most terrifying movie aliens are the Mimics from Edge of Tomorrow.
Makes wonder what 2050 will be like..... "Is it ok for him to say that? Hey, it was 2024, can say a lot of stuff"
When he didn't even say it. 😂. Oh you meant the "midget" comment.
Every generation gets softer than the last.
@@greglr19751 Don't fret, pet. There are always more assholes being born to replace the old ones who die.
