Do you have a favourite canteen auntie or uncle from school days? 🫣
(Edit: There was a mistake in the video. Mdm Koo started working in the school in 1969 around the age of 19 and has since been working for the past 55 years.)

i’m an mgs 2019 graduate, spent 10 years (half my life) eating aunty’s red bowl noodles almost everyday! even after all these years i still remember back in primary school when i dropped my bowl of noodles near the stall, i was tearing up because i thought i wouldn’t be able to eat recess that day but aunty koo offered me a free bowl to make up for it. i’m so happy she and the other aunty are still doing well 🥹

I have a similar story - just 31 years apart. I was in Pri 1 and this was at the Mount Sophia campus. I dropped my noodles at a table near the stall. I froze and was trying not to cry. Aunty Koo came out and helped me pick up the bowl, then led me back to the stall where she made me another bowl of noodles. She was so kind about the whole thing, it really made an impression on me. Truly an icon.

I'm a 1984 MGS graduate and she was there serving red bowls alongside her mom when I was still in school. We love her.

Thanks for documenting a day in the life of the living legend of MGS recess time! You have indeed captured Red Bowl Aunty Koo’s genuine love for the generations of MGS girls over the past 55 years and we love her too! It is not uncommon, as an MGS alumna, to have food fantasies of eating those wanton noodles again, even decades after leaving our school. It wasn’t covered in the video but Aunty Koo’s chilli sauce is da bomb and the perfect way to eat the soupy noodles is to mix lashings of her chilli sauce into the soup till it’s as red as the bowls! 😅

I do remember mine. Though not from the food stalls, my greatest memories come from the beverage stall.
Every Thursday was a CCA day, so I'd always get a drink after a long day's work, then I'd chat with the auntie and uncle working there. Sometimes, I'd even join with a group of friends.
I graduated from secondary school at 2018, but I came back once in 2023. I was surprised the auntie and uncle remember my face. They even remembered my height from my secondary school days!

I ate nothing but red bowl every day during my 4 years in MGS. She is the most patient auntie never scold me when I couldn't make up my mind if what to order. I am so thankful that my daughter now can enjoy the same red bowl cooked by MDM khoo.

If a primary school student doesn’t have money to buy food for recess, they can:
    1. Tell a Teacher or School Staff: Let a trusted adult at school know, as they may offer temporary help or guidance on available food assistance programs.
    2. Check for School Meal Programs: Some schools have programs for free or reduced-cost meals or emergency snacks for students in need.
    3. Bring Food from Home: If possible, they could prepare a simple snack from home or ask a family member to help pack something for recess.
These steps can help ensure they stay nourished and supported throughout the school day.

mgs is currently on it's 137th year, with a ton of facilities and one of the only schools in sg with a pool, so yeah basically it's rich and has lived longer than 55 years (also it has switched locations two times from the first day, from short street, to mount sophia, to its current location at blackmore drive)
