As a former hougang resident who grew up there, I vouch for what Mr Low said. I was very surprised when Mr Low did come by to my grandma's wake. In fact, I remember seeing him come by regularly with the contractor/technicians to check on the maintenance/repairs. That time I was very young and know nothing much about politics. He reminded me of a friendly neighbourhood uncle. That earnest sincerity touched my heart even as a small boy. Thanks for all your contributions.
I'm not a supporter of any political parties, just an independent Singaporean voter, but I can totally relate to the stories shared in this documentary because I lived in Potong Pasir for 25+ years, another opposition ward. Particularly regarding the obvious withholding of lift-upgrading in opposition wards. Much newer estates received lift upgrading and other types of upgrading from HDB years & years ahead of Potong Pasir. I remember once seeing a Potong Pasir aunty with a wheelchair bound child had to physically carry her not so small boy up the staircase due to the lack of lift on every floor. The reality is, when much needed upgrading is being withheld from an old estate for obvious political reasons, the ones that are being "punished" are the most vulnerable Singaporeans living in the estate. Those with disabilities, the frail senior citizens. Residents in opposition wards also pay tax and serve NS, some also voted for PAP, some are not even of voting age. Why the double standard and the collective punishment? My friends who live in PAP estates their entire lives have no idea that these type of things do happen in Singapore, because for over 2 decades, there were only 2 opposition wards. The stories & realities in these estates were not really covered much if at all, people don't know the realities and how ridiculous it is to play politics with upgrading. Isn't upgrading fund for hdb neighbourhoods funded by taxpayers money? We should expect elected officials to serve the needs of all Singaporeans regardless of which way they vote. Anyway, thank you for telling the stories of Hougang residents in this heartfelt documentary.
@@globalcitizen189 Dear, potong pasir residenta clearly rejected those upgrading direct and loudly with their votes. They rejected the upgrading . They said NO with their votes. Voters very well knew that what they were voting for. Please be professional. If you know that you are not going to vote for the upgrading, at least walk proud with your heads high and proudly standby your choice. Don't be like, reject the package then go around complaining. You made a choice, you stood by the consequence and you bite through it. Don't say you pay tax, you this or that. Dig deeper we might find, none pay any income tax due to many tax deductible items and countless subsidise. If you say they use the country's resource to play this game, well, the whole country and its financial wealth was a PAP creation, the entire system, a working system was a total PAP creation isn't it? Be professional please. Be fair. Be brave to stood by your choice and not whine about it.
I am proud to be a son of Hougang. The indomitable spirit which does not give in to bribery and threats but face the challenges of unfair treatment - demolishment of the market, removal of atm machines, withdrawl of bursaries etc. When my dad passed away, PAP grassroot leader came to the wake. From our conversation, I cannot feel any empathy or a willing heart to listen. In fact, I got offended that he implied that my dad passing is ok since he is old. When WP MP - Mr Dennis Tan came, I could feel his sincerity. He asked how he can help and indeed he really send people to regularly to check on my mum. While WP may not have all the resources and is not as competent as PAP, they are people who care. We need to cut WP some slack and give them time and space to grow in the current uneven playing field if we eventually want a true alternative party (in case the ruling part becomes corrupt or unsuitable to govern Singapore in future). In the meantime, we need to vote in more opposition to ensure no party should form supermajority in the parliament as we have seen how constitutions can be easily changed in favour of the ruling party.
@@jaechia888 Cannot believe one sided conversation. Especially you exhibited extremely biase toward wp. It might turn out to be a lie. We don't know how true is your story.
@@jaechia888 Do beware of political party who attempt to bring your mind back decades ago and keep you there. As human being, we always have to look forward because tomorrow is real. What's the point of a party who kept trying to bring your brains back to 5 decades ago? Mmm is it because the party itself is trying to avoid reality and living in the past? No opposition party in the world behave like that. This is not a history lesson. Instead of thinking hard ways and method to bring sg forward, this party transport you back to 50 years ago. Laugh die me. I don't know what to say.
Agree with @jaechia888. Why should we give WP a lot of slack. They are a full-fletched political party with support from different segments of the population. WP must rise to the occasion otherwise admit that they are not good enough to rule SG if there is a freak election result. We must hold and measure WP to the same standard of the PAP. Nothing more and nothing less.
I'm half Eurasian half Indian , I was living in 6th Mile Hougang all my life , most neighbours were Teochew , and we could also speak Teochew well , Thanks to all my Teochew neighbours
This is so nostalgic! Some netizens & Friends of the PAP do not get it. They asked what's the big deal with that wet market and hawker centre, plus that row of shophouses that was right in front of that hawker centre. Collectively, they encapsulated our precious childbood memories since the 70s to the 80s. I could vividly remember going to that "hub" for my favourite kway chap as a PAP kindergartener. And the bakery that sold my favourite butter-cheese-sugar buns and pandan-cream buns at the shophouse just opposite the hawker centre. Along that row of shophouses was a coffee shop that sold my favourite char siew rice. The vendor was a young man always wearing a singlet. I also loved to eat my soft-boiled eggs there with soy sauce in the 70s. There's a congee stall there as well. There's another row of shophouses at the back of the hawker centre I recall, where you could find an old-school clinic. Next to the clinic I think was a candy/biscuit shop that sold all sorts of 1970s canteen titbits. That row was always very dark at night. That empty space in front of that demolished shophouse used to have many illegal hawkers selling delicious supper every night. There were makeshift chairs and tables for residents who were mostly blue collar workers who only ate after 9pm thereabouts. They worked at Defu/Lor Halus flatted factories I guess? I remember the Teochews were very united and would look out for one another each time a warden came to raid that place. "Teh Gu!" (地牛), they would shout in Teochew to warn the illegal hawkers and then there would be pandemonium when everyone scrambled! The Willin Low guy in this video mentioned art competition at the basketball court, plus a huge playground with a big globe, merry-go-round, see-saw, slide, etc. Yes, I participated in one "on-the-spot" art competition there as well. My sibling took part in some story-telling competition and another singing competition. The PAP MP then was Mr Ng Kah Ting. He was always the chap giving out the trophies and prizes. Majority of my neighbours were Teochew Chinese resettled from the nearby farms (8 mile onwards all the way to Punggol Point), so they had known one another for eons! Sometimes, they would gossip to my mom about their bad blood since their kampong days! Buying home-made brekkie from one another was really very popular back in the 70s-80s. My mom would pass me some money to walk to the other wing of the block to pick up some banana-leaf wrapped nasi from a neighbour at 6am! Of course there were proportionate Malays, Indians and Eurasians in Hougang as well, as the 6th mile region was like an Indian Catholic/Christian enclave, near St Gabriel's and St Paul's Kindergarten. They all took the same school bus as I. One Indian kacang puteh guy was always selling candied peanuts etc. to cinemagoers at Zenith (仙宫). We bought Teochew kuehs from peddlers who went from door to door with their 扁担 to sell homemade kuehs. And one goreng pisang dude, also with his 扁担 and basket full of "Dough Culture" afternoon snacks! There was also one guy who always rode a motorbike and parked in front of Tampines Way to sell his steamed baos and dimsums at night. I could remember his blaring horn and cracking voice...There was another regular ice-cream guy who was very tanned that would drop by to sell kampung ice-cream right in front of the Blk 1 PAP kindergarten, where there was a playground. He'd sometimes pop up at the Nativity Cathedral roundabout in the evenings. I haven't forgotten one mobile rojak fella at Blk 2 and another who sold deepfried fishcakes and ngoh heong, who'd park himself on the other side where Zenith and Wing Tai were. And I've not even talked about 5th mile, 6th mile and Punggol Point at Track 24!
@@cky3345 Yes, he peng gang the taupok on the spot. I used to go there after accompanying my mom to some Tupperware MLM gatherings in one of the units at Blk 2! Haha...
I have the experience of being able to compare services of a PAP-run TC and WP TC. I used to leave near Punggol Primary school when it was under PAP and I have never even seen my MP walking around. When I had to sell my house due to unemployment, I shifted to Hougang, not knowing in was WP's area. What amazed me was the services that Hougang TC provides. I have a few issues with water pressure, electrical cut-off, but each time When I seek the advice of Hougang TC, they would send someone within 24 hours, and my issues were solved - without me spending a cent! And that's what endear me to be a supporter of WP. I also used to see Mr Low walking around the estate and coffee shops and that is enough, compared to those men in white sitting in their cushy office. Very glad also to see Mr Png and Dennis doing the same walk around the estate. . The video brings much memory of my 20+years in Hougang constituency, the market, the canal, that even though I am a quiet person, I can understand this Hougang Spirit. And I dare to mention to my friends, or anyone who talk politics, that I am a supporter of the "opposition" because I am a "Hougang nan". All pictures and commentaries in the video is the truth, the realities of what is happening on the ground. This video should be seen by the whole Singapore and should be a learning journey on what's a good MP is. Let's spread the Hougang Spirit to the rest of Singapore!
Total respect for Mr Low and the many men and women who took on the thankless path of being in the Singapore opposition. They also hv their personal life and careers to care for but did this for a belief in a fairer Singapore. Let's also remember Mr Chiam ST for his contributions. Utmost respect for both legends.
@ I’m not a young man. LTK did not set out to be a hero but became one and he is still alive. The residents in Hougang did not starve to death in the last 31 years. WP has also won more seats in parliament. Every one dies in the end so it’s not a big deal. Having a backbone is not about being a hero or neglecting your responsibility of bringing food to the table. It’s about having the basic human dignity and decency. You don’t want to be a dog who will comply to its owner’s every instruction just for kibbles. Unfortunately voters here don’t even know the people that they voted in are supposed to serve them.
@@nicholasgoh3526 Hougang did not starve to death because there is a diamond class PAP government brining in money into Singapore and Hougang was given budget and participate in the job market. Let Hougang cut away from the PAP created financial system and function like Vatican city. See it starved to death or not. The most invaluable intangible in the world are backbone and face. How much is 1 kg of backbone and face? Money is king. Come back to reality.
It really not easy to be a good politician in Singapore, especially as an opposition. Really max respect to Mr Low for persevering and leaving Singapore with a stronger opposition.
I grew up in a family where my parents advocated the best of PAP and the worst of WP. I never knew the importance of an opposition party. I was told how defiant they were and how they put SG in a bad light. My parents were not well educated. I don't blame them for that narrative. As I grew older, I start to read more about opposition parties and I got to know about WP. There were other opposition leaders and members but no one as balanced, passionate and intellectual as that of LTK in my opinion. If you watch and listen to his speeches in parliament, he may not be the most well-spoken in English, but his speech is definitely the most relatable and heartfelt during debates. I have been to WP rallies and seen for myself the hougang and opposition spirit and camaraderie. I wish WP and hougang the best of luck and success in many more elections to come.
Hello, Gaginang here. I grew up in Hougang and went to Montfort school in the 90s. This documentary is so well done and nostalgic, brought back so many memories for me. Even though I don't live in Hougang any more, many of my relatives still do and we visit them often. From all the Singaporean Teochews, thank you 💙
I have lived in Hougang for 40 years now. I remember the market vividly since my parents bring me along every weekend when they go for their grocery shopping. And even as a kid, I still remember the anger and sadness of the residents when we found out the market was closing down. I wish it was still around.......Thank you for this amazing documentary.
Chapter 3 was further evolved with Aljunied GRC contestation 20 years later (2011), which involves Kovan, Serangoon Gardens, Eunos, Bedok Reservoir and half of Hougang (Half of Hougang still at Ang Mo Kio GRC, breaking parts is to ensure that there is no power centre alternative.) Then Sengkang GRC is in 2020, which the town have to break into two - one for going to WP and one for retaining the PAP. The WP Southeast CDC, does not win any seats and the PAP continues to remain majority for the rest of Singapore. 1st Milestone: City Square / Farrer Park 2nd Milestone: Boon Keng 3rd Milestone: Potong Pasir 4th Milestone: Woodleigh 5th Milestone: Serangoon 6th Milestone: Kovan 7th Milestone: Hougang 8th Milestone: Buangkok 9th Milestone: Sengkang 10th Milestone: Punggol 11th Milestone: Punggol Coast
Almost the entire party lies. We had just witness the exciting court case where ex party member and current member are at each others' throat. I don't know what milestone you talking about. I think they go back to stone age.
This documentary is really well-made. Although I have not had the opportunity to reside in the WP constituency, I have consistently supported their efforts in representing the voices of the people in Parliament. Good luck in the upcoming election!
Fabulous documentary. Though I am a Katong boy, my parents moved to Serangoon Central and taught at Xinghua Primary for 4 years. My late mom's remains are interred at All Saints. I visit the area at least twice a year. It still warms my heart whenever I come from West Coast where I currently stay at
Just watched this video documentary about Hougang by WP media team. This video is very well made and very heartwarming. Put aside of all political differences this video about how Hougang residents old and new connect with one another and with the current MP and previous MPs.
I am not a Hougang resident, but I grew up with grandma in Punggol before we were shifted to the 7th floor in a Hougang flat where the lift level was on the 5th and 9th floor. I will never forget how she told my uncle and me that she refused to go kidney dialysis because she did not want her son and grandson to carry her down the flights of stairs to the lift level... the lift on each floor was only built months after she passed on... after that, I always follow my uncle to WP Rally when I reached voting age. Please keep up the Hougang SPIRITS.
What a timely release (just before the coming General Election) of an excellent documentary on the history, culture, politics and people behind/involved in Hougang. It's also an excellent legacy for Mr Low Thia Kiang, who, together with Mr Chiam See Tong (Potong Pasir), gave Singaporeans alternative voices in Parliament. Was hoping to see the first breakthrough GRC (AHTC) but maybe it's too long. Perhaps a follow up documentary? Great work!
I’m teochew and my parents were from Hougang, and this documentary gave me a better insight into how their lives might be living in lak kor jiok. Although i dont live in Hougang, but i feel the warmth and sincerity of the Hougang spirit!
I knew this documentary was not meant to pursue for awards or film festivals' showing, but hey, this film deserves recognition in documentary categories! Wish WP all the best in many years to come in Singapore's political journey!
Very well made documentary. i lived in Hougang in my teens and i never forgot how LTK came to my grandpa's wake just to talk and made us feel just a little more consoled by his presence. the atmosphere at Blk 327 during election day was one of the most memorable experiences i had in my developing mind. keep up the good work!!
I’m a daughter of Hougang. I grew up at Ave 7 from 1990 till 2002 and went to CHIJ OLN (if anyone went to OLN in that time frame, feel free to reply!) and my memories in Hougang were so beautiful! I remember when my grandpa passed away, Mr Low came down to the wake.. and even though i was below 10 years old at that time, i could remember that moment till now (I’m in my mid 30s) I have always voted for WP since i could vote and will continue to do so
Amazing documentary! I have lived in Kovan for only 8 years but my neighbours have been here for decades, with most of them now in having three generations in their household. Children of the pioneer “old Teochews” are all married with kids and continue to live here. The sense of identity is really strong, politics aside. Have never met Mr Low or any of the WP MPs in real life (though they do frequent Kovan market), but residents unanimously hold him in high regards
listening to the old dialogues in dialects suddenly brings back all the memories of my late grand parents talking and working at the stalls....i haven't heard full conversations in dialects in a long time already
@@城邦寡人 if you live in the area, you will know they lose Aljunied in part because that market was more depended upon by the people on the Aljunied side of Hougang, rather than Hougang SMC people. @@MrBoliao98 I thought the wp person said no market nevermind. No shelter we walk in rain. No lift we climb. Look, the PAP is the government because it is a democratically elected one man one vote government. You don't want the PAP team, it's the same as rejecting their planning for the ward. You cannot be wanting the PAP's package and planning for the smc and then vote another party who have nothing. Just think, If you have a son. Your son chasing a girl. Your son told the girl, if you become my girlfriend, I will pay for your expense. The girl then tells your son, I want you to pay for my expense but I am going to be Mr B gf. Then when your son refuse to pay for the girl's monthly expense because she had became another man's gf, the girl suddenly scold your son, saying that your son is not fair to her. That is what happen. Again, please be reminded that the PAP win by one man one vote system. A democratically elected capable political party which is envied around the world. So that's the different between the PAP supporters and the opposition supporters. An opposition supporter can cast vote the other way because of one fucking market and throw away the future of a country. Just for a bloody market. Laugh die me.
A lovely, heartfelt documentary! Mr Low seems like a really humble,down-to-earth man who just wants to do Hougang residents right. It's always an uphill fight for the Worker's Party (the upcoming GE being no exception) and I appreciate the work they put in on the ground.
Great video! I have just moved to Hougang just a few months ago and a Teochew. It really brought back the memories of my childhood living in a kampung where everybody knew each other at the coffeeshop/markets when you start conversing with them in Teochew. Love the kampong vibes in Hougang ❤!
Bravo, WP and the residents of Hougang who have made this documentary possible….and more Importantly, sown the seeds of Learning to Be truly Happy to just Be ourselves and also of course, to be Responsible for the Choices we make!👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏💪💪💪💪☺️.
I am a middle-aged man. I always tell my kids that Singapore is a place where we can't have common memories across generations. The kampungs that we grew up with became HDB flats. Even the HDB flats that my kids grew up with would become something else when they have kids themselves. There are few common landmarks preserved across generations. Communities get dislocated in the name of development. Only the homes lived by prominent Singaporeans get conserved in the name of history. The great Singapore dislocation. 😂
It's not even across generations. I'm only in my 30s, and the places where I went to school have become completely unrecognisable 20 years later. There's just no place in Singapore to actually feel at home - we have turned into nothing more than a theme park for our betters.
@Ealsante and the school.... don't get me started, all the neighbourhood schools that I went to merged or closed down probably due to dwindling student population but you don't see that happening to those 'famous' schools. I guess being an alumni of a 'famous' school helps. At the end of the day, it seems not all schools are the same as a minister would like us to believe in 'Every school, a good school.'
Singapore upfront is Disneyland full of beautiful airport garden n park but underlying beggarland where old folk n underprivileged family where more n more queuing for free foods due to jobs no longer as 稳稳吃米粉as the 84 themselves.我们造就他们稳,他们造就我们不稳,到处乞讨,听懂吗?

We as a citizen should be treated with fairness regardless of the party we voted. We should not kowtow to PAP for their threats. I am a Teochew and proud to be one. Thank you to Mr Low and his team!!
A very well done documentary which I have thoroughly enjoyed watching and greatly appreciated the content. Thank you WP and the team that produced it. May the Hougang spirit lives on in the many generations to come!
Well done, Hougang, for standing up to transactional and petty politics. Residents in Hougang and Potong Pasir also contributed greatly to Singapore, and yet are penalised for political gain. I have met the resourceful staff from both Town Councils that pulled twice their weight given the lack of resources. My only gripe with this documentary is that it should have been released a lot closer to elections for recency effect and higher viewership.
Thank you WP for doing this wonderful documentory, very well done. The loss of the old market was really painful. I was a Hougang boy, grew up in blk 9, right infront of the old market. I will never forget or forgive this. My whole family (parents/wife/siblings/siblings partner) have never voted for those in whites. Never! There were so many bad things the people in white had done to punish Hougang. We will remember these dirty politics, despicable tactics and unjusts.
Low TK is one the best MP in Singapore history. He has real concern for Singaporeans, unlike today's MPs who just pay lip service when residents complained about their town issues that were not taken care of by their town councils.
Please keep up the good work. My mum opened a small business and lived in fear of PAP, so she had to vote for them. Your hard work (and the fact that she retired😅) gave the her courage to vote opposition (whenever possible). We lived in Bedok North, and now Kembangan. Always kena gerrymandering, with constituency changing each round. I am always hopeful that PAP will lose. That said, I seriously worry that this documentary will kena pofma soon.

As a Teochew, the sweet melody of saying/hearing "Ka Ki Nan" (i.e. "family member") still works magic in me today. The Teochew language and accent itself conveys sincerity, generosity and warmth whenever I hear it. The Hougang people can only be won by heart not money, power or force. The continuous winning of Hougang SMC by the Workers' Party is the beacon of democracy and fairness for all Singaporeans! Each general election, I am anxious about the Hougang fighting spirit fading but each time the people proved resilient and resisted the "carrots". I hope the WP keep expanding their parliament seats despite the ups and downs, and "fixing" by those in power. Singapore belongs to Singaporeans, not a specific political party. "Ownself check ownself" is the dumbest form of governmental checks and balances.
Very inspiring. Learned a bit history of this Teochew people and their resilience and determination. With trust and sincerity, long term commitment to serve with humility and not arrogance will endure.
Good effort in making this documentary especially when GE is coming. Remind Singaporeans to be resilient in spite of a political environment which many feel is NOT in fair or level playing field for any alternative parties.....for people and for country. MAJULAH SINGAPURA. Had enjoyed the simple n yet persuasive way this documentary had played out as I watched it.
This ground is so rich in heritage, kinship, and neighbourliness, marked by milestones and memorable history. However, the narrative presented by the establishment only reflects their perspective. "I understand how the PAP operates.." is so telling! Thanks for this production!
Ok, now I see why Mr Low's strategy to contest in Punggol and Sengkang. Including Potong Pasir and Serangoon they are all part of the old Hougang or what it used to be. The olden days of Hougang was actually a large part of pig/chicken farms. That was why it span such a vast area on the island. It is kinda sad a lot of the history of that area was taken apart because of politics. Even the old market, a place of gathering was taken from the residents. How sad. It's no wonder Mr Low is so driven and didnt give up his beloved Hougang. This video serves as good history lesson and I hope the Teochew people especially the younger ones will not forget their roots.
Never a bad decision to move into 7th milestone area… this video hits the heart of heartlanders. Love the video and understand the culture and history of the past.

Also I recalled the electrifying atmosphere during election rallies where everybody in Singapore will gather at Hougang Stadium just to soak in the Opposition spirit. Low, Chiam and JBJ will always be remembered as the people who laid the ground for the Opposition. Now it's up to the next generation of opposition leaders to uphold the same values. Let the hustings begin.... 2025?
Only the citizens can make things right in Singapore regardless how intimidated or fearful they may be. This is our responsibility we cannot outsource or rely on the G to do it for us. Democracy cannot be effected if we cannot even afford some courage to effect democracy. It cannot drop onto our lap from the sky. The Constitution can mention democracy but by itself it cannot effect democracy which only the citizens collectively can. All the good solutions , ideas and proposals by our Loyal Opposition leaders must not be denied for political reasons because we the tax payers and voters are the stakeholders of this country. Without our tax monies, the G cannot get things done. So it should never be at Our Expense that any good and valid proposals by our Opposition leaders be rejected for political reasons, not that such deeds has already been done already.
@@cktan2739 You voted against the package and you still want the goodies? You voted against the foot path. Voted against the team which proposed foot path. I was living on my grandpa's pig farm in Punggol up till 1985 when we were relocated to HDB in Lorong Ah Soo. Had fond memories of the Hougang wet market and the Simon road wet market (Currently Kovan Residences). Pretty sad that they were tore down. Attended HIPS and now have my own HDB near Punggol Park. 53:45 that market was my childhood TT the open air spaces, the places to chill. we dont have space like these anymore in the heartlands :( it's a soulless malls that require you to pay through the nose to hangout, void decks are gone, spaces are just dwindling fast. theres just no sense of community anymore. given time, places like that market could have grown to foster the singaporean identity, like what was said in the documentary, "there was nothing wrong, it was just old" but no, apparently we have to make things look like garden by the bay, like jewel changi.
Please do a sengkang story. I imagine it will be a lot shorter but just as informative. Especially since SK is mostly young families unlike Hougang where some ppl will say oh the old folks from pig farming days bore grudges. Surely its a different reason why people in sengkang, a totally different demographic, also voted WP.
Very simple. They don't want an ex-general get walk-in election, then easily become minister. Everything handed to him, and he sit there shake leg do nothing for 4 years. They rather choose MPs that willing to put in effort for their constituents, plus got life experience and work experience, compared to someone who stayed isolated in one institution for decades of their lives, with no actual technical or practical skills.
Thanks for all your contributions.
amazing sharing
Now that the estate is almost upgraded, would Potong Pasir then consider voting in opposition again?

Agree with @jaechia888. Why should we give WP a lot of slack. They are a full-fletched political party with support from different segments of the population.

WP has also won more seats in parliament. Every one dies in the end so it’s not a big deal. Having a backbone is not about being a hero or neglecting your responsibility of bringing food to the table. It’s about having the basic human dignity and decency.

@@zhen86SK has 2 interchange, buangkok has 1 total 3 interchange 1 lrt and 1 mrt service
@@zhen86 There is a need when the buses are different. The bus services disappeared and the new ones only go halfway. Parallel services also all cut. Force us to squeeze in MRT, have you seen how crowded Serangoon is every day? And yes, PAP lost the whole of Aljunied because of this issue. Older folks still call Kovan "interchange" in addition to 6th Milestone and still treat it as such. The surrounding area still functions as if an interchange is there.
The loss of the market was huge. It contained so many memories. Would hate for Hougang to be a template town like other estates.
A market is itself An Ecosystem.
Where Community Spirit n Social Interactions are Organically occurring especially with the older gen...some living on their own.
It is The TO BE PLACE in the early mornings.
A place to share the latest gossip similar to an office environment.
It will be bustling with activities when the sun is not blazing hot.
By noon everyone back home until dinner time. Enjoying a night walk.
Malls for the young.
Markets for the young at heart. ❤
PAP lost Aljunied because they demolish that market. Aljunied the people depend on that market more than Hougang people. So many of us live on the otherside of Hougang Ave 3, depend on that market. You walk go Kovan or Lorong Ah Soo too far.

Hougang sooner or later will fall to PAP one lah. Its just a matter of time only. Don't understand how can you people live in such a Slum for so many years. Such a simple thing such as a Market also don't have. 😂😂😂
@schadenfreude6274 slum? Think you have to read up my dear. You want to vote opposition, you have to afford to live in private property.
Fortunate that I was staying at Block 3 back then. Really had the kampung spirit at Hougang, with lots of memories.
For me, it’s not about politics; it’s about the Hougang nang spirit.
Thanks for the effort on the documentary, and thanks to Mr. Low for your dedication and contribution. 😊😊"
Respect and salute to the residents of Hougang... and i am hearing the chants.... Worker's Party... Worker's Party!
What a wonderful and timely documentary!kudos to the perseverance and hardwork of the oppo volunteers and leaders!
Hougang nang continue to keep up and preserve the "kampong spirit"!
Very inspiring. Learned a bit history of this Teochew people and their resilience and determination. With trust and sincerity, long term commitment to serve with humility and not arrogance will endure.
when i see hougang, i just press like
Good effort in making this documentary especially when GE is coming.
This is impressive with immense work put in.
Thank you Mr Low
I have family who still live in Hougang, I live near and frequent the area quite often. This video really resonates with me.
But his strategy to foster community is quite good, you don't see that a lot in SG.
Never a bad decision to move into 7th milestone area… this video hits the heart of heartlanders. Love the video and understand the culture and history of the past.
We need more of these narratives and stories to be told in the media! So inspiring, alternative and healing. Thank you Mr Low and WP for the sacrifices and true service. 💡 ☀️
Well done! You show people that they do have an option, and that they can exercise that option without fear or be beholden to others!
People. Great work. Really good documentary.. Mr Low, I sincerely appreciate your stands and approach.

I grew up in a part of Hougang in the Lorong Ah Soo estate, studied in Aroozoo Primary School back in the early 80s. We used to explore our estate and cycled our bmx all the way down to Punggol end just to meet some of our schoolmates who still live in the kampong areas there. I remembered that there was a cinema just opposite Hougang bowl. Back then we can hear the roaring noise of the jet engines from the Paya Lebar air base. Catching guppies in the longkang. Then from Lorong Ah Soo my parents moved to Lorong Lew Lian back 1987. I miss that kampong feeling.
Simply put: LTK is a real man with real balls
His fearless when debating with PAP in parliament
Really? When the Aljunied financial saga started, I recalled seeing in the media report Mr LTK said , regarding to the financial in Aljunied Town Council, I don't have much involvement , something like that. Got real balls will talk like that? Laugh die me.

My first solid food was a chee Kueh from there. Now still go to the cai fan at the neighboring block sometimes. It’s now a sheng shiong there, but you can imagine the vibe if the market was there instead. Also, it’s damn hard to find cheap food near my area these days. All so ex… I mean look at 322, teh o peng alr 1.80 and all the coffee shops taken over by large corp that charge $5 for a bowl of noodle in the ave5 and ave 8 area. Sometimes I feel guilty for not being able to speak teochew esp since my relatives can HAHAHA

Singapore has no Opposition without Hougang.
Singapore will not change without the Seed sowed by Hougang.
I think the TeoChews back then were different than the rest of SG that allowed them to dare to vote for Opposition without FEAR. Just the little bit of difference made a world of difference. HG ensured Democracy was still alive in SG. Many in other estates wanted Opposition presence but they Feared too much unlike the TeoChews.

I've been living in Hougang since young. I do miss the market :' I loved the food thr. Every Saturday my family and I will be thr. We would cycle from our home and eat our breakfast thr. After breaki, my dad would go to work and I would go home to watch Doraemon. The photos are really a reminiscing of the past. I used to be a kid then. It was very sad when we new that it was going to move. Same thoughts (53:22). This is really a great documentary tho. Have really learnt a lot more abt Hougang now too.
Excellent recap of hougang over the years! Kudos once for Mr Low's heartwrenching efforts in the intial yrs after taking over from the sore loser. 👍
The great team effort was wonderfully displayed in the vid. Keep it up! I prayed more sg voters will be urged to vote wisely after dismal handling + many flops of the grossly underperforming (to some extent even ridiculous policy rollouts esp by nea, coincidentally the culprit behind the closure of that iconic market).
Support for Workers' Party. 👍
My mum use to work at the bakery shop beside the market. Miss the market so much
Love the Teo chew speech ❤ Kai kee nang here ❤
Good one WP. JBJ would have been proud. Still remembered JBJ selling The Hammer newsletter passionately despite being ignored by everybody else. Social media is the way to go.
I'm appalled the educational bursaries were withdrawn when LTK won the election and the foot path was not provided for the residents.
@@cktan2739 You voted against the package and you still want the goodies? You voted against the foot path. Voted against the team which proposed foot path. I was living on my grandpa's pig farm in Punggol up till 1985 when we were relocated to HDB in Lorong Ah Soo. 53:45 that market was my childhood TT the open air spaces, the places to chill. we dont have space like these anymore in the heartlands :(
it's a soulless malls that require you to pay through the nose to hangout, void decks are gone, spaces are just dwindling fast.
theres just no sense of community anymore.
given time, places like that market could have grown to foster the singaporean identity, like what was said in the documentary, "there was nothing wrong, it was just old"
but no, apparently we have to make things look like garden by the bay, like jewel changi.
