    Never seen the stuff until your videos, it almost looks like easter basket grass up close. 😂 I've had good luck tying moss onto things with disposable nylon hairnets, much less of a tangle and knot mess for me. Just cover the whole thing, twist and tie the end into a knot, and cut off the remainder. 😊 Can make some easy kokedama that way too.

    Mark I appreciate your enthusiasm. I can't wait to get a few shrimp. I just found a tall 15 gallon that I think will eventually be a shrimp colony. Newcomers will have to forfeit all worldly possessions and promise to go forth and multiply.

    What if you tied it to a sponge filter(not too tight so the sponge isn't smashed)? Would that prevent the filter from working? Seems like an easy way to hide a sponge.

    The subwassertang looks fantastic! Shrimp really do enjoy investigating new things... I put three nerite snails into my red cherry tank to help sort out the algae and the shrimps rushed them, crawling all over them - for a few seconds I thought they were going to eat them, lol!

    Must just not have tied mine enough when I tried last year. Now it's unruly and I needed answers. Glad found your video first. Thanks.
    Curious to know more about the bottles of bio media over the outlet of the sponge filter. Sounds like a great idea if you have a how-to on that process. Thanks!

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      some of those filters were a bad idea, anything that floats thats made of stone or some kind of ceramics will grind against each other and make the water cloudy, the other thing is these were not shrimp safe, any time I had a power cut the shrimp would climb into them and when the power came back on they couldnt get out so in the end I removed them all to be on the safe side.

    I’ve watched a handful of your videos. I’m going to try tying some susswassertang in the near future. But wonder what you would say is the average time it takes to establish to the wood. And do you cut and pull out the threads after that time??

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you should be able to get a decent attachment and ball like the size of an orange in about 5 months, all the thread eventually just rots away.

    Hi Mark.
    How tightly would you say you tie your Subwassertang to the wood? I notice you seem to have put quite a bit of tension on the threads. Would there be a possibility if tied too tightly that the thread would cut through the subwassertang?

    I bought some mini subwassertang I love it because it’s actually thinner and looks more dainty I just can’t get it to stay on the wood starts out being real sturdy but eventually with water changes and vacuuming it ends up in the sink over the past six months it’s very frustrating I need something that it can go in and grow out of I don’t know what to do

      thank you for answer Mark! Could you give an example of some your tank? volume of tank and light power of lamp. I will try to calculate necessary light power for my tank (35 litres). And another question: do you dissolve CO2 in your tanks or may be pouring fertilizers. Sorry for my English ))) I'm from Russia and my English is not so good.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

      Рамиль ХР Your English is fine so dont worry about it.
      I dont use CO2 or ferts apart from what leeches from the soil.

      Sure do my friend , How To Breed The Red Cherry Shrimp - Neocaridina Davidi th-cam.com/video/FTgGktfSjw0/w-d-xo.html
      If you have berried female it should be just a few weeks until she has baby's ,maybe 3-4 weeks at the most depending on the temperature of the tank.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Alex Cordovez Any kind of algae wafer is fine,1. the absolute best practice is to give them a certain amount ..watch if they eat it ..then remove after 2 hours.
      2. Then the next day give them a little less and repeat step 1.
      after a few days you will have worked out the exact amounts to feed :)

    probably a stupid question :P but, lets say I bought from you and they grow big and I have to much and want to sell, do I just trim them and all the small leaves that you cut off can be plantet again or do you actually need to use like the bottom part of it that is stuck to the driftwood?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

      These things eventually break away from what you tie them to so yes in a year or so you have to start all over again,if you wish to sell parts of it you can just pull them apart.

    Hi Mark, I wanted to please ask for advice; I've got 5 crystal reds in a 10l dennerle nano cube, and am currently trying to optimise their living conditions. The breeder I got them from, had them in water at 280 TDS, which is pretty insane I thought; would it be recommended to change 1/20th of the water each day until I get the TDS down?
    I did this once tonight and noticed a few moults, the last thing I want to do is incur deaths via moulting.
    Thanks

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Best thing you can do here is remove the Shrimp from the tank completely ,fix the TDS and then reacclimate the shrimp back to the new conditions .doing it this way will save you alot of time and hassle .Do 1 drip every 2-3 seconds and drip aslong as it takes to get them to match your new tds ok :D

      Cheers, i'll work something out and try that; I'm seeing a lot of people over here (Scotland) keeping crystals in tapwater, high temps, high tds etc; goes against everything I have read...they breed too! Can't vouch for the quality though, which is perhaps the biggest difference

    For a long time I wondered why the german word "wasser" is in Subwassertang and then I found out that it's actually spelled "Süßwassertang" and really is a German word. "ss" would be a more appropriate substitution for "ß" which is kind of an "s". "Süßwasser" is German for "fresh water" and "tang" is German for "seaweed". Süßwassertang is emphasized on the first syllable by the way.

    You’ve gotten me hooked on Subwassertang, but I’m still not a fan of snails. Being that it’s so sensitive, is there anything you can safely dip the Subwassertang in to kill snails and their eggs before adding it to your tank? I know things like Alum and Potassium Permanganate will kill snails, but not the eggs. Is there anything safe to use that will kill snails and their eggs, but not Subwassertang?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

    We will see.

      So far Mark,its growing..but if I hadn't tied it down,it would be in pieces as I still dont get the feeling its attaching. Any fish nibble,and some breaks off..or a current. Plecos..
      It doesnt handle fish disturbance well. Unlike the mosses.
      For sure a plant for a very calm tank and totally peaceful calm fish-lol.

    Hey nice video. But it's called Süßwassertang or Süßwassertang. Süsswassertang meaning freshwater in German 👍

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its actually an unnamed species of Lomariopsis, Subwassertang is just an evolution of the word Süßwassertang because ß sounds like z or s in English .

  • @sskyle227
    @sskyle227 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can attach subwassertang to aquarium objects with superglue! Superglue won't harm the tank or inhabitants.

  • @insanecuckooman8342

    i love your vids, but SUBWASSERTANG???
    it is Süßwassertang, which just means freshwater seaweed, and it is spelled zuess-vosser-tongue. or just call it pellia, that is also wrong, but at least it doesn't sound horrible.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not German so why would I say Süßwassertang ? Its generally accepted to call the plant Subwassertang in the English langunge.

    This is a common mistake, but there is no "b" in this plant's name. The plant's name is German. The "b" looking letter is an Eszett (German sharp "s"). This is an Eszett: ß. It is pronounced with a strong "s" sound. (To type an Eszett on a Mac, type Option and "s".) Süßwasser means freshwater in German. Tang means seaweed in German. Therefore, Süßwassertang means "freshwater seaweed" in German.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be a mistake IF i spoke German but I am not.

    • @keith161
      @keith161 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarksShrimpTanks it's not about inability of speaking German. It's simply the correct spelling and pronunciation of the common name of the plant.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      How can it possible be the correct spelling when I dont use German letters ?? you say it the way you want to and I will say it the way I want to.

    • @keith161
      @keith161 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarksShrimpTanks, the English language uses many words from other languages: French, Spanish, Latin, Greek, etc. This is especially true in using a genus of many common aquarium plants, such as Cryptocoryne, Vallisneria, or Echinodorus. It's not a personal matter of choosing how to spell a name. All I am stating is the fact that what is viewed as a "b" is actually a German sharp "s" (ß is called an Eszett - which one can just spell "ss"). Susswassertang (or Süßwassertang) is the correct spelling (loosely translated meaning "freshwater seaweed"). You are free to cross-reference this.
