    This video is an overview of the history and scientific information that we have on the plant known as Susswassertang. It is an odd case of us Aquascrapers and hobbyist, massively popularizing a plant before the Scientific Community can decide what to label it as, or even a name for it.
    Not only can't they decide which species it is, they couldn't decide if it was a liverwort, a moss, a fern or its own family of "freshwater seaweed" ( which is the plant's name in German). Spoiler alert it's technically an aquatic fern...and one Hell of am interesting one!
    It's an ancient plant as old or older than the dinosaurs, and it will likely be here long after we humans are. In fact, it may not even age!
    So if you'd like to know a little bit more about this plant and it's amazing properties, how it's being used as a biodegradable plastic, how easy it is to grow in your tank, and incredible facts such as self-replication and the plant survives while only consisting of one cell wall of thickness on each "leaf".
    So take a moment to sit back and marvel at the beauty and protective fern in your tank, known as susswassertang!

      Thank you! I love that he tries to explain the German origin, but completely messes it up. I nearly had a coronary when he said the eszett makes the Z sound... dude, no. in German, the S makes the z sound and the eszett makes the hard hissing "S" sound. I shouldn't freak out over it but it is like nails on a chalkboard for me.

    Thank you! Great video! Markus is right it does translate to Freshwater Seaweed (or kelp). "Suss" actually means sweet. In german when you say "sweet water" it means that the water is unsalted or "fresh water" in English. Kind of like we have salted butter and we call unsalted butter "sweet" butter. It isn't actually sweet it is just not salted. The word "wasser" means water and "tang" is seaweed or kelp. I don't know why they still use the Eszett-I mean I know it tells you which sound to make but it just seems outdated and creates confusion for people trying to learn German! Ok-now I'm going to "sew" my Susswassertang into long kelp ropes!! Thanks for the great idea!!

      +Bradley Vaughn, when you say that, it means the world to me. You made my month! Im just passing on what im passionate about and trying to learn the new and quirky connections that occur when natural history and human history intersect.
      Every view, subscriber and like, means a lot to me.
      Im learning how to work TH-cam as I go, but the channel is only 2 months old, and im trying to build a community as well. Also i want to keep this channel ad free unless it's for relevant products and responsible/quality companies. But until I get to 1000 followers I can't control that too much with TH-cam's new policies. In the end my patreon page is how I hope to fund the hours of research and care of my animals. My first purchase with 30 dollars on patreon was a tripod haha. So if I earn it, in the future, I value a dollar or two patreon supporters immensely as well. I make my living jumping from art gig to graphic design gig and the last 2 months it's been slow, so i decided to put my heart into pumping out content. So again, Thank you, im never hoping to get rich or live off anything like this, but sustaining my animals and actually engaging with people and entertaining them while sharing my learning process is the goal

Thanks!! Was just gifted a huge ball of this that is so incredibly healthy and vibrant green and LARGE. I have a bunch in a nano vase with crypts and scuds for 2 years - much thinner and dull dark green in comparison but still doing great. welcome and thanks for being active in seeking knowledge... yes, it is a wandering jew heh.. (I'm Jewish so it amused me) ... I've gotten them to grow in the hang off the backs...they simply remove nitrates and ammonia, but are not aquatic plants so I just do it to give them a nutrient boost and level off my tanks parameters. almost any plants that have running roots will do this just fine...just be aware that they can grow into sponges and filters over time and clog thrm in like 6 months

      Mine is from a local store that doesnt ship, however I've also ordered from aquaticarts.com (I have a channel code for 15% of SECRETSHRIMP15 if you want to use them ever). Also I've used h2oplants.com ... there are strains from everywhere and mostly they're the same except for hard, or micro pelia's They can live in northern Germany all the way to Thailand, but they look the same without a microscope.

    Sußwassertang - pronounced Soos Vasser Tang. Translated from German to English: sweet water seaweed. the funny looking B is a double S "SS" in German. the U in SuB has an umlout which gives the U a OO sound. W has a V sound. Is it known where it derives from? Java fern makes spores and clones of itself. Double SS not a Z, as a Z in German is pronounces TZ like blitz, not the English Z as in Zebra

    Hi there, thanks for sharing. What is the best water and light parameters to cultivate suvwassertang that u can recommend ?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neutral to slightly acidic. Low to medium hardness and co2 + high light + lots of trimming it, so it branches and gets tighter bound little chunks. Some people actually get it to graft onto surfaces and grow like moss.... then use co2 and high light to made it as dense as a bush of water sprite, or Riccia fluitans

    so im confused. one minute ur talking about pH saying that it can handle 7 or 8 pH then u follow up with "thats like brackish". doesnt brackish have to do with salinity? at least thats what i was told. and if i remember correctly salinity can affect the pH but not pH affecting salinity.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes Brackish is about salinity. Salinity will increase tds and generaly also increase ph. And you are correct that ph change wont change salinity (you could be dumping battery acid in some ocean water and the ph would go nuts but salinity could remain near the same (minus some ionic bonds, I believe)

    The little "flowering" bodies on most Mosses are called Sporocarps. We have here in Southern Oregon, a wetlands splash zone plant that looks like a fern, but puts out sporocarps, so I'm assuming it's a Moss.

      It probabaly got too hot or cold...or a chemical...if it's temperature, id leave it in a area that's low light and just leave it for 1 to 2 months and check on it then...tuck it under a rock slightly or in a corner and just let nature try and repair the damage....im guessing the brown will turn to green in some areas then the brown will melt away into mush while the green starts several new clumps

    A month plus later,and I haven't seen a root on the thing or anything that attaches...it will just mound over what you tie it down to. It is delicate and mine has lost some ground due to scavenger fish breaking pieces off. I have a high activity tank..fish are always on the go,filters are strong,and subwassertang likes calm and I think beginners might have trouble with it. Its better with an old bright tank with nano fish. And tie it down with more then just a ring of mono..go over and over it.
