I think the problem is that Doug's shtick was to just be a one off rival character for Stewie that could have served his purpose in only one episode or to be spread out in a couple of episodes in every Season. But he got overused for too many episodes in just one Season for the same recycled plot.
But that's just what I think.

I literally thought the exact same thing, he shows up so many damn times, and every time he shows up I know the episode is gonna be boring
Nothing new or surprising that they randomly killed Doug off-screen. Remember they randomly also killed off Brian's ex-wife and opening said it via the fourth wall break that she died during the commercial break.
Yeah but that was fairly obvious. At least that she wasn't gonna be with brian forever. Doug was kinda just a side character no need to kill him off, they could just have him stop showing up. Plus doug had more appearances where brians gf was just a two parter.
That’s a bit different since she was only in that two part episode whereas Doug was in every episode for a whole season
Yeah but she was intended to be a short lived character and was going to be killed off when she was brought in. I feel Doug was probably supposed to be around longer but was taken out due to how unpopular or unnecessary he was.

I don't know how this series survives. The writers are shit.
I don't think the problem was the concept, but rather the execution. Stewie having a rival or a bully or something once the character calmed down from all his murderous intent would have worked. WOULD have. They used the character too often, they didn't let Stewie get a W in there. But the character falls apart that it's just "Doug is slightly upperclass and arrogant," without giving the character some depth or making him a genuine threat. To me, they missed a whole angle where Stewie could take him, but he refuses to fall back on his older, evil self. Remember what he did to Nelson in "The SImpsons Guy?" Why doesn't he try that with Doug? That said, I totally wish that Stewie and Rollo would have had more interaction than a couple one sided, meta jabs. I would love to have seen an episode where they started out hating each other, but sooner or later Stewie finds Rollo as a true big brother figure, and Rollo taking Stewie in as a protégé.
Honestly if they played some kind of rivalry like Stewie being super intelligent but antisocial and Doug being socially intelligent but not that smart it could've made a better rivalry than just "Doug is an asshole who's better than Stewie in nearly every way"
@@Tommy-nh4su There's a lot to unpack that went wrong with the character and execution. I'm all for the Doug and Stewie being frenemies concept, and I would love to have seen it be this slightly passive aggressive thing where they know that they hate each other but have to remain civil. I'd love to see it cause Stewie to fall back into his more evil self with Brian trying to pull him out of it. What they did makes everything much more sitcom-y than FG was ever made for. FG was always a loving, yet sarcastic look at sitcom tropes, and if anything the Stewie/Doug rivalry should have been over the top and cartoonish. If anything, it feels tame and I don't think Stewie should be the loveable loser type (that's Brian), but more of "The Brain fails at taking over the world" type. Here, you don't just so much root for Stewie, but rather want to punch Doug in the face.
Though I do like that it's Chris Parnell playing against his Cyril/Jerry type. An extreme loser who comes off more pathetic than someone you feel sorry for. But I think he played better against his type as Slade in My Adventures with Superman. I want to see him play a REAL villain again.
Doug's just not Bertram. Period.

That doesn't mean that the audience isn't sick of them either.

I wouldnt count doug as being dead for ever. Remember they "killed" kevin Swanson with a throwaway line of he "died in iraq." Only to have him alive with a contrive md explanation of how he survived.
Doug can always be revived if they find a suitable imitator or when Rick and morty inevitability gets the axe and chris parnell needs a paycheck.
Doug reminds me of Squilliam from Spongebob [Squidward's rich rival] who was smug, a pompous ass who was seemingly better at everything. Yeah we could do without Doug but Stewie had Bertram and I agree the writers could've used Rallo as continued rivals instead of bombarded us with Doug all the time.
Great Point. Family Guy has introduced so many "talking baby" characters that they abandon after one or two episodes that fans would rather see some back than have a new one introduced

I agree. Doug was OK but was maybe overused for a time and I don't miss him. Rallo would 100% be interesting as a kid for Stewie to have frenemy stories with.
Doug felt like he had an unfair immunity. Half the characters Stewie interacts with end up hurt or Dead. So watching Stewie having so much issues with a kid he could just destroy in less than a minute always annoyed me.
Doug wasnt a bad idea. But the writers just handled him so poorly.

I thought being a talking baby was a trait unique to Stewie, Bertram, and Stewie's intellectually equal girlfriends. But I guess smart babies are just a common occurrence in the increasingly nonsensical world of Family Guy.
Babies at Stewie's age talking isn't too unrealistic, but making Doug(who isn't smart but rich) talk like an adult is a bit much.

tbf aren't they preschoolers? ik doug's still too smart for a preschooler but since there are other smart toddlers like stewie's girlfriends then it's not unprecedented and I don't think it's reached a point of commonality

I had no idea there was any hatred for Doug until the episode where they killed him off and I looked online to see why….. lol there were a lot of people cheering that day, I didn’t mind him but I also don’t miss him❤😅

The whole "Strwie has a rival" thing is so overplayed now that doug was obviously going to get flak. Bertram, Olivia, Penelope, etc. pick a character to fill the role and stick with it fgs.

I feel so sorry for Chris Parnell he voice acts two of the most hated characters in cartoon media. Jerry and Doug.
Yeah, but Jerry is a main character necessary to the plot he is supposed to be hated. But you feel sorry for him and he tries. Doug is just unlikable. Rick and Morty wouldn’t work without Jerry.
I think Jerry isn't as hated as much as he was initially though. I remember in the sixth season a lot of fans enjoyed Jerry's growth and actually getting wins for a change. He is still not universally loved, but he does seem to have more defenders than he did in the first three seasons.
He was also Dr. Spaceman on 30 Rock though, and that was one of the best characters on the show

To bounce off the point of “Doug represents the new family guy,” it reminds the fans that the story angle their going with for Stewie is making him act more like a normal baby or toddler, not a super genius. Doug is quite a step down from other characters like Bertram and Penelope.
Both characters were great rivals to Stewie, being able to match his intelligence (and sometimes surpass it) so Stewie would always be evenly matched, and would sometimes be outmatched, but not always.
Stewie being jealous of Doug doesn’t make sense from a narrative standpoint. Stewie is a genius. Doug is a normal kid, he’s just higher up the social hierarchy. Stewie really shouldn’t care about what Doug and the other kids think of him, and he DEFINITELY shouldn’t be outmatched or outclassed by Doug, so this rivalry is… very strange to me.
All in all, I thought Doug was… fine. He had some good moments (with his rivalry with Chris fighting over Herbert being very funny)
True, but in that therapist episode with stewie it was revealed that he really just wants to fit in. If he sees someone that kind of matches his intelligence or outmatches him, AND they fit in and are liked by everyone, it does make sense for stewie to be jealous of that. It’s a good match for what the writers are going for with him. At least in my opinion
Wish they would bring back original version of Brian! Smart, grounding for Peter and voice of reason. Old Brian meets new Brian, time machine. Episode almost writes itself.
With a cursed typewriter... and the guy's name is Norm Hall... because he's just a normal guy... but that's not for everyone, that's for the scholars 100 years from now.
-Season 1 Brian: Smart, worldly, knowledgeable, well-meaning, sophisticated, Peter's true best friend, yet not a saintly Mr. Perfect.
-Modern Brian: Condescending slimy idiot liberal douchebag Lothario who, no matter how much he gets what he deserves, just never learns.
I hated Doug because he was only used in the episodes where the joke is. It’s a regular story but as a baby, I’ve never liked those episodes. They have just been boring, the criss cross kill one is the only one that wasn’t like that, and it’s the most memorable to me
I didn’t like him either. He was so annoying. I love Chris Parnell but I can’t picture his voice as a little kid. Rallo would’ve of been a better rival for stewie.
9:37 Let’s be honest, the real reason Rallo and most of the Brown family aren’t part of the series is that they would make every other character on the show look bad.

How would they make every other character look bad? Like let’s be honest I think everyone laments the fact that a show like King of the Hill got cut off for a third lazier family guy rip off with a black spin on it and even worse side characters. Truly awful characters.

I never could get behind the Cleveland show. I aways found it weird that his voice actor isnt the same race and most the voices on that show arent either yet they rely heavily on outdated stereotypes like grapesoda magazine and name dropping taco shells to not seem broke. Then they wonder why the show didnt get success, because they were essentially making a mockery of a demographic of fans that were actually genuine fans of family guy etc. just always seemed like a bad choice

I think the problem with Doug isn't actually Doug himself, but rather they used him way too much, causing people to get tired of him pretty quickly. Iirc there were 2 episodes back to back in I think S20 where Doug was the main conflict

He is a super genius baby and doug yea he is rich but stewie is way smarter and doug isn't too smart yet gets so many ws it gets annoying to see doug always one upping stewie.

What i didn't liked of Doug, is that Stewie is supposed to be the genius around, then suddenly a new babe just outsmarts him in every episode, pretty annoying for me.
It would be annoying and old of Stewie just outsmarts every single character. That sounds even lamer. Stewie is the perfect archetype to have a rival and mix up the dynamic. Not just "win all the time"

Am i the only one who actually LIKED Doug? He and Stewie’s dynamic was fine to me, just two mean kids who are trying to be nice to each other, he had to be introduced yk.. I can see toning him down but i think killing him off was a bit much
I liked Doug for the same reason; they are two sides of the same coin and it’s about time Stewie had his own little cast of characters outside the family, that he interacts with regularly

Doug actually wasnt that bad at all, and unpopular opinion but Bertram was never entertaining to me I always found his voice annoying and storyline predictable. I feel like the people dragging doug aren’t really fans of the show, they probably just watch a couple random episodes here and there. Someone commented and said they got rid of doug because they couldn’t afford his voice actor anymore and that makes alot more sense. They should get rid of the new town mayor, I find him to be completely boring and I always skip through his scenes. They could go without the school principal too, we’ve pretty much seen all he has to offer. Those spots could free up some money for doug to come back
Chris Parnell is a great voice actor and he voiced a lot of great characters like on Rick and Morty and Archer but this character was too snarky.
Personally I always found the Doug episodes very funny. Something about Stewie being obviously so talented and smart already, but being so bothered by another kid with just a bit more swagger always made me laugh.

There's a few episodes that are good here and there but a lot of them are really boring Or they repeat concepts that were done way better in the past. Honestly i hate how they killed off Doug off screen.
It was the laziest way to get rid of him. Jusy like Meg's bully Connie, they got rid of her off screen as well and she's been around since the early days of Family Guy.
But Angela and Adam West being killed off screen is very understandable, the actors passed away so you don't know how to get rid of the characters without them being off screen.
But certain characters like these i find a bit lazy and rubbish writing. Beetrum and Diana and Neriel and Peter's step father were great ways to kill off characters.
Yes they could’ve had Doug just move away. It was smart the way they retired Angela and mayor West. And Muriel dying, and Peter stepfather made sense because it helped move the other characters forward like how they killed off Loretta. Didn’t have to die. It was just kind of like a throwaway line.
I think you're thinking about Connie as Meg's bully. She's still in the show but her last major episode was a few seasons ago.

I never saw Doug as an annoying character, quite the contrary, I thought that he was one of the most interesting Stewie enemies or rivals, mostly because the conflicts between the two revolved around childish or mildly mature situations, plus they didn't have a pure hatred relationship with each other, meaning that sometimes things could end with good, bad, or even mixed results. I feel like he really had lots of potential, quite sad that many people didn't like him...
Another thing, people are seriously are complaining about him being a one-dimensional character? This is family guy ! Almost every character is one-dimensional or straight-up confusing as the writers keep on changing/resetting the continuity and characterization of them. I mean, what is Meg character supposed to be ? A nerdy but good spirited girl ? Or a super edgy sociopath in the making ?

You know in Fertilized Megg there is new rival for Stewie called William, hopefully he is a one-off because the writers probably didn’t want another Doug situation with the fandom.

Parnell actually voiced a number of bit characters besides doug on the show, to the point I thought he was joining the main cast.
As far as doug goes I actually liked the character but Parnell was the wrong choice for him. He just has the one voice and it's adult man voice. much like how John H Benjamin has his iconic voice he just does in everything to the point that it's a running gag even on family guy that he sounds the same no matter what character he plays. if JHB played a Doug-like character the joke would always be "John H Benjamin is playing a baby" and even though they tried to stack on other jokes, Stewies rival, rich prick, adult thoughts with baby habits, ect. the MAIN joke is always Famous Man is Baby and thats a one note bit. It only works once or twice before you're bored of it.
He could have been Bertram or Rallo.
Period.
The End.
This character simply didn't have a reason to exist. 😕
Same applies in The Fairly Odd Parents' tenth season where Timmy has to share his godparents with a new godchild which should've been a pre-existing character instead of a new one.

Ehhh too close to the main cast to even be interesting while Brian and Stewie still go on adventures together (Bertram is Stewie's brother) so it was a better move to give him a rival outside of the family.

He has another mother that has no relation to the Griffins. They could have done an entire episode about genetic genealogy and their families forcing them together and the way that the family deals with that realization but instead they killed Bertram. 😕
@@EmbalmerEmi The whole point of Bertram is that he's Stewie "Evil" Brother, regardless of he's close to the family or if he has a different mother the literal base of their rivalry is that they're siblings.
I hate Principal Shepard far more. Ever since they started giving him more screentime they began trying way too hard to make him quirky and funny. He just comes off like a less funny white version of Principal Lewis from American Dad

Nice work Lydster. I have to admit, I must have missed all of Doug’s episodes because I have literally no recollection of him at all. That one clip you showed of the “big phoney” guys’ kid annoyed me though because I couldn’t stand the character. I didn’t find him funny when he first appeared, I didn’t find him funny when he vanished for a bit and I don’t find him funny now he’s back, simples.
Video idea: Considering your love of horror I’m going to assume that you have seen Beetlejuice. With the sequel FINALLY coming out in September, I believe, how about a Beetlejuice video? I know it’s innocent in that version but it also feels weird that he has a full-size poster of Lydia in his jacket, and the fact that he explains to us that it’s their “anniversary” in the first episode. And I’m not trying to force you into cosplaying but I really do think you’d look awesome as a goth girl. Of course, now that I’ve discovered you love Beetlejuice too you’ve instantly become at least a trillion times more awesome, and you’re already my favourite TH-camr so that’s quite an accomplishment.

My problem with Doug is that, when Stewie is around him, he stops being an evil genius. He has a Time Machine! Why should Stewie care what 1st graders care about him, or about being Snack Captain.

It felt like he was supposed to be a reoccurring character but the writers didn’t know what to do with him, once the episodes that actually had Doug and Stewie as a b-story it felt very recycled, they’d have an issue, go through drama, become friends then same stuff the next episode. Just too samey every time
This is one of the reasons why I really miss 90s Stewie. 90s Stewie would have shot Doug just for looking at him.

It sucks seeing how much people dislike Doug, I actually did like his character a bit but the execution of him was very poor.
Since the idea of Stewie having a proper rival again, both of them being able to best each other rather than Doug always being a snarkass, is something they could've done better.

I think Doug was a really interesting rival for modern Stewie. As Doug is an enemy that isn't a big deal. He's just another kid, who happens to be better at certain things than Stewie (social interractions). Modern Stewie is a lot less murder happy, as he's learned that it's not always necessary to kill, and Doug isn't worth killing, so he was an enemy Stewie had to tackle in different ways.
I wish Bertram would come back, he was a much better rival against Stewie.

I didn't mind Doug. I thought that he was a perfect, quote on quote emphasis here, "Heel" character. He did his purpose and was becoming somewhat more relevant as that character for Stewie. I wished they didn't just discard him, so abruptly like that.
I think Family Guy is terrible. "The Simpsons" and "American Dad" are, in fact, no different from them. It's just a family that's been watched for about 25 years. Nothing changes, and if it does, it's only for the worse. Watching cartoons about family has been boring for many years (Family Guy, the Simpsons, American Dad, etc.). It's a pity that they haven't been closed yet
Millions of ppl like all the shows, being on a floating timeline with a restarting status at the end of the episode isn't really a deal breaker for most. Not every show needs a over arching plot. Especially an animated comedy. Thinking a show should be ended because u don't like it personally despite them all being very popular is kinda closed minded n self centered.
Saying the Simpsons, family guy, n American dad are all the same because they're just families where nothing changes literally just deletes all other context. U literally say the shows have been going on +20 years. Out of the 20yrs things definitely develop and change, character dynamics, styles, new characters, characters leaving, new lore, etc.
Acting like these don't exist doesn't make ur point better, just makes it seem like u don't know what ur talking about. There's a reason ppl usually have different opinions on each show lol

@@Nopigs1312Hmm, you're both right. Changes in dynamics, drawings are of course changes, but not those that he implies. And the family really hasn't changed in such a long time. Only Stewie turned from a tough villain into a rag, and Quagmire lost the interest that the screenwriters initially created for him. There are definitely new characters, but the whole plot, thinking about it, takes place around the same family without changes, and the new characters are just new secondary characters
I feel like American Dad fell off worse than Family Guy. At least Family guy is still moderately entertaining and funny whereas American Dad is nowadays random nonsense for the sake of random nonsense.

I think Doug failed because Family Guy viewers can’t handle complexity and non-black and white characters. It’s a Sitcom and a TV show. The audience isn’t the smartest.

The main reason I didn't like Doug was because he was voiced by Chris Parnell. Hearing the same voice that Jerry has felt so weird for me. The other was that like every other episode was about Doug. I love Chris Parnell's work but the baby role didn't suit him.
I genuinely enjoyed Doug. Maybe because I've enjoyed Parnell's work so much over the years?

I enjoyed Doug’s first short scenes. His friendly banter with Stewie was a fun one-note joke. After that he became an incredibly smug jerk who never got any karma. Smug jerks are fine, but they exist mainly to satisfy the audience when they get their comeuppance. To top it off, Doug seemed to only exist to make Stewie look weaker and less confident than he originally was depicted (something I personally don’t like). I’m glad he disappeared but I didn’t know he was so hated.

two reasons why they killed him: lazy writers and he wasn’t worth the costs of hiring Parnell again and again just for a hated character…sadly, it’s also why Bertram was killed years ago, they couldn’t come up with better stories involving him

Doug just goes to show how Stewie hardly has that killing edge to himself anymore. Beyond the borderline Mary Sue moments where he wins when he shouldn't, a past season Stewie would've just killed him.

They didn't even try; Doug was allive for 99% of that episode and then permanently murdered him in the last second over some unrelated plane crash. That's worse than the "forgot-they-existed" method.

He was annoying. I would prefer Stewie to have adventures with Brian. Those are some of the best episodes. Adding Doug in there took away from that.

To any other normal character. Yeah this is a foil, a rival. But Stewie? A character that shoots people for less? It just did not work well. Instead of making a rival that actually challanges Stewie's character, they dumbed him down to fit Doug instead.
Everyone seem to forget that Stewie used to be evil too and was bullying everyone, trying to flatline Louis, always aimed for world domination, used to be smug and preferred royal families more than his own, many different people besides Doug.
At some point in the seasons Stewie became humbled and good, I think around season 5 and especially after that episode where Louis and Peter shot him dead in the white house.
That marked the end of evil Stewie for the most part.
Now that Stewie is humbled and stopped world domination, something had to be done to make Stewie show his true potential, something to push his buttons, a new purpose, a new mission... a Doug. remember what they said? "Everyone has a Doug".
Brian scored a**hole points far more than Doug, but no one wants him gone. Bertram was gone too early and it'd be boring to make Doug a cardboard copy of either of them. Any thoughts?
I don’t believe the being busy part for Chris Parnell because if they really needed him for a few lines, it’s not that hard for an actor to come in for a couple of hours. I think they just didn’t like his character.
I've been a fan of Family Guy since I was a kid and still enjoy it as a young adult. It didn't bother me that FG introduced Doug, but it did feel out of nowhere that they invited a new baby into the show. He wasn't an amazing character, but maybe if they knew what to do with him, he could've been bigger, but I'm also not sad he's gone just curious on where he went.
The main thing with Stewie is that he can either do stories with Brian, do random acts with one off characters, or comment on what's going on with the A plot. Because most of the main cast can't understand him, he can't really participate, aside from some Mom/Baby stories with Lois. Doug seemed like an attempt to give Stewie some classmates to do school/daycare stories with.
one thing to note is that, if you were annoyed by Jerry, you were probably instantly annoyed by Doug since his design is strikingly similar, only 100% more smug
