      I'm guessing that sales were dropping off because of the all new Camaro. Lets face it the Alpha based Camaro is objectively a better chassis than the mustang chassis. Styling of course is personal preference, I prefer the styling of the mustang.

    • @jeffk464
      @jeffk464 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also price per horsepower is irrelevant. Sports cars are measured in performance not which one has the most horsepower, also the subjective fun factor. A 2.5T Cayman will blow the doors off a mustang of much higher HP, that being said I like mustangs. I would like to see Ford downsize the mustang and put it on a diet, they should shoot for the size of an M2. An M2 sized mustang with the 2.7 ecoboost engine would be outstanding.

    Good video, you seem very unbiased despite the fact you own a corvette. I dig it. Personally, I’d wait a year when the mark up and all that drops down and you’ll pick one up much more decently priced. I’m just not a fan of buying brand new cars but that’s me. As far as between the camaro and mustang, it’s just a matter of taste. The mustangs are equally as proven as the SS when you consider real world numbers around the track.

    • @jeffk464
      @jeffk464 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wait until the mid-engine corvette comes out and buy a new C7 at rock bottom pricing. The problem with used cars is you might be buying someone else's lemon. If I know the person I'm buying a used car from than no problem but a stranger, ehh.

    • @drakedischler6568
      @drakedischler6568 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think buying used depends on the vehicle. I wouldnt mind buying a used pickup truck thats been certified. But a used sports car/muscle car?.. Can you imagine what the previous owner may have done to that drive train? Proper break in period, wide open, etc.

    • @dudeshark2471
      @dudeshark2471 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drake Dischler I could ever see myself buying brand new unless I was 6 figures in spendable income, car prices are absolutely absurd brand new. If you can’t figure out if a car is in good condition or not, you don’t know enough about it and it’s an impulse buy anyways. You can get it compression checked, hell there’s shit out there that lets you see into the cylinder without opening it up. Btw, WoT is safe in most modern cars, in fact lots of them could rev higher than their redline safely but are tuned for extreme longevity. Things like brakes and suspension will never cost you more than the ridiculous mark up so that’s not viable either.

    • @gymratt42
      @gymratt42 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Drake Dischler I’ve bought both new and used performance cars. Some of the used I bought were c4 vette(6k Miles), LS1 z28(51k Miles), 06 300srt8(12k Miles), c6 vette(69k Miles) that I did heads/cam/ported fast102, stall converter at 88k miles. I’ve had less problems with used vehicles in my 31 yrs of owning cars and bikes than I did with new vehicles I purchased. The least reliable cars I owned were ford/mercury that was purchased new..

    Great review...
    When I was looking to upgrade my '11 Mustang GT, the '18 GT Premium I spec'd out ended up at $50k... I ended up buying a new '17 Corvette Stingray 2LT for about $2k more after all the rebates and special discounts... Since I plan to keep it for several years, the "old model year" wasn't an issue, and the '18 'vettes were unchanged from the '17.
    IMO I got far more car for the dollar, and one that was designed from the ground up for performance and handling. Ford has not done themselves any favors by increasing the price for '18.

  • @stevenkraus1679
    @stevenkraus1679 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    I dont think that Motor Trend comparison was fair. The 1le is a pure track package. The Gt track pkg is really more of a sport pkg for the street. It would compare very well the a regular ss with magnaride. The gt Track Pkg2 which is coming out is the one you should compare to the 1LE. Just my opinion....

      @stevenkraus1679 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Didnt say anything about price. And ya depending how you equip it it can be more expensive but still in the same ball park. Again the 1le should be compared to the second performance pkg. The standard performance pkg compares very well to the standard camaro with magnaride. Both cars are awsome in my opinion. However the 10speed will smoke them all on the street

    • @gigi9467
      @gigi9467 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steven Kraus i know u didny say abything bout price thats why am reminding u tgat even at the "lower" perf pack it was already more expensive abd wats worst i still think the 1le will beat the perf pack level 2, sorry camaro got this gen on lock no other way about it. and i am a s550 mustang owner.

    • @jeremywinslow7345
      @jeremywinslow7345 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 1le doesn't win in unbiased tests against the gt performance pack 1, it will get wrecked by the pp2. Then again the test has to be unbiased, which they will never do.

  • @NoWay23548

    A brilliant review! As a Swede, we only have the Magneride and alarm as an option. Most cars are already specced with the performance pack as Ford Sweden thought no one would want the car without those options. We have “custom pack 1” with silver rims and more chrome, and “Custom pack 2” with blacked out rims and windows etc. oh, and you can order the Recaros as well, but not many seems to do that. The rest of the car is the same level as your “Premium plus” as it’s not possible to get the car with cloth seats I think.
    Anyway, great and informative review!

  • @jsdaniels1969

    Great Video. I pretty much agree with all of your points. I am one of those that did buy a '17 GT Premium. I didn't get it spec'd out with every available option but it is very nicely equipped. The '18 is faster and has some additional features I would like to have. With that said, an '18 spec'd as close to my '17 as I could get it was still $6000.00 more expensive. Since I am never going to take it to the track and there is no public street where I live that I can safely and legally drive it or any other muscle car to it's performance limits it came down to price I was willing to pay and personal preference. I just like Mustangs. :)

    My current dilemma is an😮 interesting one, but I made my decision today. I had to choose between a 61 k 2016 C7 Z06 Vette or a 2019 ten speed 5.0 Mustang for 40 k. Ultimately I decided the Ford Mustang is the better choice for several reasons, one of them being for about 3 to 5 k in mods and tune my ten speed 5.0 will actually be faster than the Z06 and I'm still saving 15k! The Ford 5 liter V8's are the most responsive engines mods and tuning compared to their competitors. A ten speed 5.0 Mustang is budget super car and that's just a fact.

      falchulk I’ve bought used performance cars with zero issues(c4 vette, c6 vette, 300 srt8, LS1 camaro) . Some had as many as 69k miles when purchased and then I proceeded to do heads/cam/ported FAST102, stall converter. If you like to mod like I do, it’s dumb to buy new and void a warranty when modding. Plus you save a shit ton to put into mods like supercharger, heads/cam, full exhaust, track wheels/tires etc.

    • @gymratt42
      @gymratt42 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      falchulk I’m sure there are plenty of horror stories but going by my experience and two of my friends who bought multiple 06 gto’s and a 93 twin turbo rx7 they too have been trouble free. The LS family of engines and coyote motors are pretty bulletproof as well as the transmissions. The 4l60 e trans was a bit weak so that was my main concern buying high mileage 99 z28. The positive is if you save 10 grand buying used its a lot of money In case something breaks you can upgrade to a built trans, rear diff etc.
      I agree it is a crap shoot though and you can get burned if it’s a money pit/lemon vehicle. I would be terrified to buy a used turbo or hi performance euro import.

    • @gymratt42
      @gymratt42 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      falchulk all those web vids of people beating on perf cars definitely doesn’t give used car buyers any comfort. Lol
      A major concern for me are the ones who put a nitrous kit on their car, race the hell out of it, then return it to stock before selling. I try to look for signs of a previous bottle mount or possible engine bay signs. At least used corvettes are usually owned by old guys like me only most of the other old owners don’t mod them.

    The 18 Mustang needs more tire. Ford should make the 305 square tires from the performance pack 2 standard on the performance pack 1. The PP2 18' Mustang is the only Mustang GT capable of taking down the SS 1LE; unfortunately I haven't seen any major tests of it yet so I guess we'll have to wait. GIVE IT SOME PUBLICITY FORD!

  • @tikky0982
    @tikky0982 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I agree that once you get into the $50k range, it can get kinda iffy with buying a car like this. You’d have to be absolutely sure that you want a Mustang 100%. Otherwise, it makes you wonder whether you could get something else for the money, like a Stingray Corvette for example. As usual, very solid review. I liked the breakdown, especially the horsepower per dollar analysis. The new 2018 is definitely a big improvement over the outgoing 2017 model, and I will say that its new look has grown on me.

      Yeah, the Camaro is a superior chassis to the mustang. The pushrod thing is true pretty dated but its hard to argue the power to weight of said antique. Its kind of amazing what GM is able to get out of this old design. The funny thing is from an engineering stand point GM's V6 is actually a superior engine to the V8. Of course the baddest V8 on the planet is the AMG 4.0T, got to love it.

    • @gymratt42
      @gymratt42 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Hartup the mustang outsells camaro by a good margin because of all the secretaries and aerobic instructors who buy v6 versions. No disrespect but mustangs always appealed to women drivers much more so than camaro, going back several gens. How often do you see women driving camaros vs mustangs. I very rarely ever see women driving camaros. I even seen pensioner women driving mustangs that I never have seen driving any gen camaro.

      Puttnutt24 for $46k, you can get a Camaro 1LE. For $49k, you get the upgraded 2SS 1LE...$55k is a lot of money for a Mustang GT.

    I bought a 2012 GT500 in 2011. I had the Goodyear Eagles. When I wore them out, I put on a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports. When I wore THEM out, I bought a set of Continental Extreme Contact DWs. When I wear THEM out, guess what they're going to be replaced by. Another set of Continentals. They are WAY better than the other two. I've got more than 10k miles on them, and they're better than the Goodyears and Michelins were when they were new.

    As always Robert, you provide so many talking points and so little space/time to comment. 😂 If I wasn't the "Man of Few Words" I'd be very upset. 😂 This vid is just another example of an amazing amalgamation of sight👍, sound👍 and content.👍
    1. Interesting that the Mustang incorporates the dual fuel system like the new ZR1. Do you have any idea what such a system provides in the way of additional horse power and/or add'l or less gas mileage? Has the Camaro or Challenger also incorporated such a system?
    2. Maybe I missed it, but would you tell us what the weight is of each of the three vehicles.
    3. Just a suggestion, but maybe consider for a future vid visiting some engine builders and/or tuners and explore what can be accomplished from just an install of a simple basic performance air element to full bolt-on options, as well as pros/cons of a lap top tune versus a full dyno tune.
    4. Off topic, but what are your thoughts as to whether or not the new ZR1 will go sub-seven minutes on The Ring?
    5. Any possibility of you doing a live stream in the future?
    Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos. The videography is as seamless as the shifting of the 10-speed transmissions. 😂
    Save the Wave.

      +Peter Carey As always, thank you for the support and great feedback 👍
      1. I know it hasn't been implemented on the Camaro yet. If the rumored new Z28 comes with the LT5 then it will 👍 The Challenger has SO many engine options available, but I don't think that any of them utilize a dual fuel delivery system. From what I understand, it was introduced on the LT5 to help serve the additional fuel that the ZR1 needs over the single direct injection of the LT1 and LT4.
      2. The Camaro is the lightest of the group 👍 Followed by the Mustang and then the Challenger.
      3. That would be cool 👍 I'm guilty of being a warranty warrior lol. I've never modified my vehicles with even basic bolt ons.
      4. Based on the numbers at VIR I think it's very probable!
      5. 🤔 Not sure... I think it's a great tool for sharing news at exploring a car show. No editing at all makes me a little nervous though lol.
      Love the analogy with the 10 speed auto lol 😂 Thanks for the kind words.

But . . . yep, always a "but." lol BUT if you don't envision selling for awhile, consider a few more ponies. I would venture to say that the smile on your face may just increase a few centimeters. 😂 Plus, selfishly, I know you research and do your homework, so I'm curious as to what you would come up with. Just food for thought.

    Legitimate question please answer anyone that knows... At minute 15:20 in the video, it shows different size tires bc it has the performance pack. Can i put the same sized tires on all four corners? If not, why? If no, is it bc it's different rim sizes for the front and rear. LEGITIMATE QUESTION. Ive been wondering this since Ive been debating on whether or not to pull the trigger on GT.

    Exactly one month after this video the 2018 Mustang GT performance Pack 2 model was released and is much more capable on a road course just like the 1LE, so you might want to do a follow-up video because it's all changed now. The Camaro SS 1LE is definitely not that much better than a 2018 Mustang GT as everyone said it was when it was compared to the Performance Pack 1. The funny thing is everyone doing videos like this already knew in May exactly one month after this video was put on TH-cam that the performance Pack 2 would be available for testing for everybody. Don't act like you didn't know LOL.

  • @Steve-yr5vi

    So with your sales comment; you're going to completely ignore the Camaro was completely designed for 2016 AND yet sales dropped? Realistically, the market for Mustangs / Camaro's / Challenger is only so big, and like all business has a cycle. Also I'd pontificate that each car's cycle is different from the other's with the Challenger having the least overlap if at all with the Camaro and Mustang. In my opinion the redesign of the next generation Camaro is sink or swim - or live or die for it and if GM has sense they'll figure out how to return to the interior dimensions of the Zeta car. Hopefully both Ford and GM now understand, performance is not the biggest attraction to these cars. If there are two sales influencers above others; I'd say exterior style and interior livability, performance really is not a significant factor as consistently the best performing variants - other than the GT350 are the worst sellers. For example for all the hoopla of the 1LE just 4% of Camaro's sold are 1LE's. To put that in perspective; 8% of Mustangs sold are GT350's therefore in reality any time a 1LE actually makes it to a track there is likely to be at least twice as many GT350's present. So comparing a 1LE to a base GT with a PP1 or PP2 is not realistic, and the ZL1 - do they actually sell those? My bet is all ZL1 owners are GM employees unless they are giving them away.

    Great video, Robert. I agree, a loaded GT would be the way to go. The good news is that Ford has a LOT of room to move
    price-wise on most of their lines, Mustangs included. My advice to anyone looking to get into one of these would be to
    shop, and then shop, and then shop around some more. You'll eventually find a dealer willing to work with you and put
    you into a GT for far below sticker.

    It's subjective but the C7 looks better, sounds better and is more fun to drive.
    The biggest advantage the stang has over it's competitors is the coyote's ability to handle bigger power reliably.
    For me, the GT stang would need to be premium and PP1 as the base has that lame little 4 inch screen and terrible base tires/handling...

    I've seen the thumbnails for your videos for a while. I bought a 17 Mustang GT, a car I've been dreaming of owning since 1987 when I was 13. I consistently scrolled by your videos because, while not a "Ford" guy, I do prefer the Mustang over the similar offerings of the other companies. I always figured the videos were going to be a Chevy guy saying "this thing sux compared to my Vette" and your videos would just be a Chevy guy bashing a car I waited 30 years to get. BOY WAS I WRONG. You're videos seem to be very unbiased and an honest and very thorough review. Now a new subscriber. I do like your Corvette which will be my next car. BTW I had to wait 30 years because in NYC insurance companies laughed at me at 18, 25, wanted crazy money @30, and FINALLY deemed me responsible at 43 lol. Look forward to your upcoming content.

    Agree that getting more of a base model with a few options is the way to go. The $2200 premium plus package with the digital dash would be nice but not needed. Unless the new B&O sound system in the 2019's are better than the "Shaker audio" . Even then the stock dash is just fine, has all the cool read outs on performance etc. Don't need NAV as the phone can do all that. I don't even think you need the performance package. And if you can do with out leather one can find a GT non-premium that still has all the guts of a race car for about 32k. New. The 2018's will be heavily discounted now that the 2019's are rolling in.

I can't live without the sunroof because I haven't since 1996, and use it 12 months a year. If you spend 60% or more of your time on the track, then get the 1LE. It's made for the track, not the street. It'll serve you no puron the street, other than a very harsh ride. Also, GM is still using direct Injection which is not a good idea on high perfappkixations, and is causing heat and other driveability issues in Cam and vetted.
