    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not entirely sure why it caught on fire, I think there must have been something stuck between a couple switches, maybe even a bug or something...

    • @dickcheney6
      @dickcheney6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuse reacts to the amount of current drawn, so if the problem was that something failed shorted and/or a fault caused multiple coils to be locked in, then the fuse would have blown. The problem with a coil being locked in, is that the total current to the entire bus would still be normal, except that the coil isn't supposed to be continuously on.
      Now I'm wondering if the gray paint on the bottom of the playfield is flame retardant or something: But I'm certainly not going out of my way to find out, nor should anyone!

    It may be the first implementation of the Halt and Catch Fire instruction.

    • @aaronbrandenburg2441
      @aaronbrandenburg2441 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Somehow I knew that would come up!
      You know it would have to be somewhere in the scoring system or perhaps one of the steppers or anything else with the latching or other.
      If I'm not mistaken not necessarily Halt and Catch Fire butt there was something about if you were to do certain things and if the memory was accessed continuously you could actually catch something on fire.
      And then there's also the printer on fire message!
      Also the killer poke.
      And numerous other things for example back in the day where cooling was a joke on computers!
      Wear something like a bad hard drive could cook a CPU!
      Believe it or not once I saw a fire alarm set itself off.
      Something went wrong even though it was functioning and did not cause it to sound but once the smoke came out of the fire alarm system the fire alarm actually went off due to the smoke detector in that area detecting the smoke from the fire alarm.
      If that don't beat everything what else does.
      Other than a b a water leak detecting system that shuts off the water detecting its own water leak.
      So that happened once as well.
      Also once I smoke a solid AC powered smoke detector smoking and not go off.
      Also once saw a fire inside of something dryer thermal fuse but it kept going the thermal fuse did not blow both of them and also none of the thermostats opened and high limit either.
      Perfect Storm there.
      What family killed power is when there was a short that kill power at the panel!
      Haven't before I can get to it.

      He's probably got the album magic stroke injector it'll be okay.
      And yes that was an actual IBM gag that took place saw something about that previously and there's actually an image in a piece of documentation somewhere.
      And actually on the supposed device said IBM Magic Smoke injector!
      There's been a few times I've let out the Magic Smoke not very often!
      More often than not letting out Magic Smoke just blowing a fuse or trip a breaker!
      Once I did actually have those ionizer air cleaner things with the AC adapter.
      Didn't actually going out to smoke or anything but it did die.
      It was arcing it in the collection sell for some reason don't know why.
      It drew enough current from the AC adapter that it is heated up enough to cause part of the case of the adapter that distort!
      My guess is the diodes went out!
      Probably full Bridge rectifier configuration and in the process of too much current one one or more of the diode Toreador just had way too much current through it and soften the plastic on the power supply.
      Once had a battery charger that was built into an AC adapter case do the same sort of thing.
      Turns out bad spot in the cable which caused a short.
      Woke up in the morning smelled something turns out that's what it was.
      It was plugged in but not connected to a battery!
      Good Thing charger for sealed lead acid!
      Charge cable would have gotten pretty toasty if not burnt to a crisp or Worse could have happened the next Charger I got put in an inline fuse right next to the alligator clip in the positive lead

      @@LyonsArcade with what you said in the end about flip-flop whatever.
      There's two ways I would have said this.
      Either the flip flop. Flopped!!
      What the flip flop flipped out!
      There's a possibility that there might be some sort of a kludge to to disconnect power if there were to be smoked in the cabinet!
      Someone could probably find a way to do this reliably.
      But do some sort of smoke detection 4 bottom cabinet and also back box.
      And if smoke or excess temperature were detected disconnect AC power.
      Would require manual reset.
      I'm not talkin about using a crowbar circuit on AC power or anything.
      But some sort of relay wire that if it gets power from smoke detection disconnect the AC power before the power transformer.
      It's possible to get smoke detector modules from some sources mint for DIY projects seriously you can get that now.
      If one wanted want to go extreme used some sort of shunt trip breaker before power supply on a bracket.
      But that's just all hypothetical but theoretically could be done but but making economic sense and such???
      Also if there are certain pinball machines that are known to have certain issues in certain areas of the circuitry that someone would cause malfunctions that would definitely cause excessive current over time.
      If it might be feasible may or may not have fusing in that circuit that just isolated from the rest if your on purist it and all that or just not up with that.
      But if it's something on that section that could be isolated buy a fuse even if it would mean doing a bit of rewiring.
      But yeah most you would not be up to that but some might.
      Especially if that circuit would be used intermittently in terms of power if one has Slow blow fuse of inappropriate rating.
      And things got fouled up there might be enough current draw for enough time that it might blow a smoke blown fuse but yet under normal circumstances not enough current to blow it under normal conditions

    JOE's CLASSIC, can you explain how that 1000 points stepper unit works? because if you get 10,000 points why would it only give you 1000 points and then step BACK once. I would think it would step 10X times to give you 10,000 points 1000points X 10 = 10,000 points and then steps back. You're saying it keeps stepping back but its not counting also which doesn't make sense. Can you please explain it better

    • @KC_justme1
      @KC_justme1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Each step is 1000pts until it returns to home position and opens up a contact switch which stops the stepper unit. Saying it differently, each time the stepper ratchets one tooth 1000 pts is added to score. And if you are looking at the playfield, the light bulbs from, say, the 8000 light bulb drops to the 7000 light bulb and on down the table.

    • @waynegram8907
      @waynegram8907 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KC_justme1 How many steps does the stepper unit have? it must have 10 steps. But In the video he keeps say that for each step up forward the stepper unit will go BACK one step down, which doesn't make sense. The stepper would have 10 teeth for 10 steps I would think logically.

    • @KC_justme1
      @KC_justme1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@waynegram8907 If I understand you correctly, you are thinking right. I don't remember what Ron said exactly, but neither did I remember him saying anything that sounded funny.
      So there are two coils - one steps up one direction & the other steps down the opposite direction. The number of times the step up coil can ratchet is determined by a post that's threaded into the outer rim of the tooth wheel. You saw the video that showed saw-toothed notches. Each tooth/notch represents a 1000pt bonus, on this particular game. Up, to add each bonus while the ball is still in play - down, to collect each bonus you earned when the ball exits off the table. The number of possible bonuses are determined by that threaded in post, called a stop. There is one more stop - this one is located on the outer rim also, but is to stop the step down at home position. So because of the two stops - how many teeth the one coil steps up, the same number will step down by the other coil. Some pinball games may be set to add up to a total of 15 bonuses during ball play - other games may only have a possibility of 10 bonuses. The design of the game is what determines how many bonuses are possible.
      WOW! That's easier to say than to write!
