Dude, thank you so much for this. KJ are one of my hugest influences and like you say, never cease to impress and to blow me away with how passionate, insightful and highly musical they are. I love all their albums and continue to watch them closely. "In Cythera" pretty much got me through ending my life when my girlfriend passed away last year. True story. Jaz' openess to his spirituality has also guided me to new insights concerning spirit, metaphysics and "quantum immortality" - which have also been life savers for me. Long live Killing Joke.

Was fortunate enough to see Killing joke when they came to Boston in support of the 2003 record. As a bass player, I was up front screaming at Raven while my brain glitched trying to decipher Geordie's tone. One of my favorite bands of all time and thank you for this

Geordie was my guitar idol in 1981..i was 17 years of age and a cheerleader in high school. I bought a guitar after hearing the Killing Joke song, " Change". I referred to Geordie's style as jagged punk.. Love Killing Joke!

Love this video... found you by way of your amazing John McGeoch video then your Robert Smith one. Although not Goth, Hugh Cornwells /Stranglers 1st post Punk album "Black & White" is such a stark brutal genius album... check out Hughs guitar sound on it. As always JJ Burnels bass on this album just ramps up the sledgehammer smashing brutal sound even more than on any previous songs/albums, especially on the song "Tank". Add to that dear departed Dave Greenfields soaring archipelago keyboards & you've a stark, bleak industrial sounding music of doom.
You really should do a programme about the Stranglers. Subbed.

Back in 1990 at a NYC release party for the Killing Joke Vinyl Box Set (of the first 5 albums) I met Geordie, Martin Atkins (who was playing drums at the time), & Paul Raven. Paul actually hung out with my girlfriend & I, buying us drinks & hitting on her which I didn't care about because he accepted a demo of my punk band. :D RIP Raven.

Great episode and what an utterly killer band Killing Joke is-to this day. Back in the early 80's, as a headbanger, I got a lot of flak for liking bands like Killing Joke,, Siouxsie and also punk. Geordie is totally unique in all of his playing. The other members are nothing less either, which certainly explains the Killing Joke awesomness on all levels.

Good video. Just to clarify, despite what it says in the documentary, it was actually the reception area of `Melody Maker` where Jaz did his infamous liver dump-They used to have a kind of indie music Gossip Column called TTT every week in the publication and they printed a picture of Jaz in a swimming pool from a few years earlier and made some disparaging comments- He was one of their regular targets because he was so outspoken and disparaging of the music press and they used to use it to get back at him i guess- but the funny thing is is that the Melody Maker were probably the most supportive music paper (followed by `Sounds` )of the band at the time- especially in the mid-eighties- they seemed to have a love/hate relationship with the band- In the end of year readers polls that they used to run KJ would often get `Best live act.`

Sure, they took a huge step away from the punk roots of the scene in their looks, but they definitely nailed the Zeitgeist with their sound and lyrics. A couple more of Killing Joke’s interesting sonic attributes you didn’t mention:
    A) Jaz Coleman’s Oberheim OB-X synthesizer. Their secret weapon that punctuates all my favorite tracks from the first five albums. A legendary synthesizer in its own right, it’s incredibly cool how Jaz incorporated it into their music.
    B) Martin “Youth” Glover, their original bass player and founding member. While I’m sure they were all massive dub reggae enthusiasts, Youth’s entire vibe was right up there with Jah Wobble as far as the whole Punky Reggae/White Boy Reggae/Post-Punk Dub thing goes. Amazing basslines and style.

I think Raven was the one that figured out how to play bass to Gordie's guitar. Gordie's guitar playing is so unusual that many bass players would be mystified on how to play bass to it. I think Youth heard what Raven was doing on the bass, and he got it. When Raven passed, and Youth came back in Youth was able to pick up right away with what to do with the bass.

Tom Morello I was surprised to learn that he uses the single coil neck pickup for rhythms on all his guitars like all Walker along too. For solos he barely ever switches to the bridge. When I picked up Killing Joke's recent record Pylon a few years back, not only did I like it, I was intrigued on how great it sounded for high gain for P90s pickups. It sounds like he is using the neck pickup on it too, not sure but still, it's different versus what most are doing in the modern era.

He actually switches from bridge to the middle position on that “live at the tube” video. I haven’t actually seen any occasion where he used just the neck pickup on its own, but the middle position (apart from being hum cancelling) is his go to rhythm tone, and flicks over to bridge for a more aggressive tone. Another good example is Frenzy, you can really hear the difference from when he’s in the middle position to the bridge. The PA:CE/Bell ADT has a very interesting history too, the original pedals actually had four delay lines and was designed to be a tri chorus/true double tracking type effect. Once PA:CE bought them out and release the desktop unit version, the circuit was completely changed. The ones Geordie uses are actually very similar to the Deluxe Memory Man, it uses a single MN3005 delay chip with an LFO to modulate the delay time, it’s basically a chorus/flanger but with a super long delay time range. He did switch to some sort of rack units from the mid 80s onwards too (you can see them on the side of the stage with the ADT units on top of them), but I’ve been unable to find out or confirm what these effects were.

Similarly Big Paul was an original member and current member, but some of the drummers in between, like Martin Atkins, and some American kid named Grohl should get a shout out.

I am one of those losers who found out about Killing Joke from Metallica. Not even mad or ashamed about it, this band kicks ass and I am happy to have found them, no matter the route.
I am also one of those bridge = rhythm/neck = lead pickup goons.... at least for metal/high gain.
More rockin/low gain tones, definitely best to go the traditional way.
Concerning your "where is the weird setups/gear" (paraphrase) section, I would like to mention that noise/grind bands (usually with silly subgenre names. ie - mince, splatter, gore, etc etc) use all sorts of whacky gear. Usually due to monetary issues, but there is definitely cool shit sometimes, but you are also correct in that most people just use the basics. I definitely use the SM57, but fuck Vintage 30's. Eminence Wizards, baby. Or Creambacks if you can swing the cash.

Oh, those old Trace Elliot 410" cabs have been kind of oversized. They had massive oomph. No need for a 15" cab if you stack two of those 410" cabs.
Those 15" cabs actually had less SPL, the 410" just swallowed them.
Some members of www.bassic.ch , the biggest Bass community in the German speaking countries (Austria, Switzerland and Germany), started using their 410" + 115" stacks upside down, with the 15" cab on top of the 410", so they started to hear the 15" cab because it is nearer to the ear, and the 410" just had more low end because of the ground contact.
I for myself switched to 410" cabs in the end of the 80's because I used 15" speakers during the late 70's and part of the 80's and never was really satisfied.
Because a single 410", not to mention two of them stacked, could give me more oomph and more articulation than the 2 x 215" I had on stage before.
I became a huge fan of big speakers with some membrain in the last
10 years again, having now a Tecamp L 215" and two custom made cabs with a 14" woofer (Yes, 14") and a 5" speaker for mids and high end (besides some 410", 212" and 810). Those 14" are modern woofers with lots of excursion, but are fast reacting and have punch I never have heard or felt.
The Tecamp L 215" has modern neodym speakers in it that are fast, but don't have the excursion (Xmax) of those 14" woofers.
    For your interest: the 115"
+ 410" stack was the favourite stack of Mark King of Level 42. And as everybody liked his tone and wanted to sound like him, the absolute bullshit 410" + 115" became en vogue.
Remember, a 410" cab nearly has twice the cone surface of a 115", this surface gets moved by 4 magnets, every one nearly as big as the one at the 15" speaker. So a 15" never had the SPL and
the oomph (and articulation) of a 410", especially back in the days.
There has been lots of research and progress in cab- and speaker construction, so 15" speakers are comming back, especially in lightweight cabs. But 410" cabs will allways be superior.

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE
      @CIRCLEOFTONE  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep but I'm talking about close micing. If you close mic a 10" vs a 15" bass freqs are lacking on a 10" but you get the upper mids as a tradeoff. I pref a 12" in general and that's what I used.

You mention at 19:35 that Raven couldn't go back to the UK.. I saw him play for the last time with KJ a couple of months before he died at the Astoria, unless I'm misunderstanding you.
Fun fact if nobody has mentioned it, Nirvana stole their riff for Come as You Are from Killing Joke's Eighties, Jaz scrubbed it off after Kurt's death.
Personally, I think you'll find most people that say they hate Jaz because they're fucking terrified of him. If you've met him he's a very big and very intimidating commodity, you'd have to be nuts to sit opposed to him as a journalist and tell him what you think he'd literally tear you to pieces.
Also, I'm not an instrument tech so I have no clue, but one thing about Geordie has always fascinated me and that's his stroke of the strings. I've stood 4 feet in front of him for ages watching this delicate gentle waver that he uses to stroke his strings, I don't know what the tech-heads call that but it's unlike anything I've ever seen in any other guitar player.
One last thing (again bear with me I don't know) but 'apparently' part of Geordies unique sound is because his guitar is deliberately de-tuned, I heard that somewhere a long time ago, thought it may have been mentioned here, maybe it's not a thing.
Another great watch thanks for this one.

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE
      @CIRCLEOFTONE  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I took that Raven info re passports from an interview with Jaz. Well said re Geordies style. It's almost like a balladeer strum from folk. I never thought about it. All I know is that I'm a good guitarist and I sounded clunky compared to him. It's aggressive and graceful at the same time.

Hey if I want to set my Gretsch up to Geordie’s spec’s,what do I have to do..?
From what I’m understanding I need a trapeze tailpiece and to P90 pickups ( any particular kind?) also what strings do I have to put on I know he uses heavier ones but are they 11s or 12s and what brand? You’re the guy to go to so I figured I’d ask

What model Gretsch do you have? I'd hate to see you mod an old one. It's a mistake a lot of people make. Haha. As it happens I saw this and thought it would be a good guitar to mod to get that vibe but it's a massive task. Greco EG-200 *Project Husk* 1960s '70s reverb.com/item/66052146?
