Thanks for your insight bro, I cringed when I heard someone say MFT is dead. No wonder filmmakers hate TH-camrs, all they care about is Autofocus and a flip out display 🤦♂️
I personally know many people who don’t need more than M4/3 sensor. And you’re someone that you need a larger sensor, then you just don’t buy this cameras. Simple as that. This camera will definitely find its client.
But most TH-camrs also film solo, autofocus is absolutely necessary in most scenarios, like vlogging. Making TH-cam videos, making films (kind of) for TH-cam and actual Filmmaking are three absolutely different genres with different approach and different need of equipment and these fields often overlap each other. Like the whole TH-cam cinematic videos concept was introduced to YTbers by filmmakers. I'm just greatful to all the things I got to learn cause of this platform. No conflicts, only Peace & Love should prevail.
@@Abhshkraj There is no real need for AF if you are shooting yourself for youtube. Single point and an app to control the camera can get almost everything done and some handheld closeups of products can cover everything else. Af is really only necessary if you 1. (Long read, but experienced use) First, great review and perspective! I could've bet money which one was which. I have a GH4 that I've been using for so long (2014) as a military videographer. I've been waiting for this GH6. To preface, I own a 5D M III, RX100 M IV, and the GH4. I love the GH series. The differences: The GH series gives people a yellower skin tone than Canon. I knew what Canon was because it had the best color. I use my 5D mainly for bokeh shots and sitdown interviews (chef's kiss). The subject's face on the GH6 had more noise and was less sharp. Both your Canon and Sony are sharper and have better depth of field, but not enough for me to pay the extra. The best part of the GH series is what it offers for the videographer's experience. The camera body layout and in-camera menu display are the BEST. It's simple and made for video shooting, saving so much time. My GH4 is the best run-and-gun camera, and the build is durable of all my cameras. Nothing has come apart, fallen off, scratched, or broken from this GH4. Whereas my 5D became easily scratched, and somehow the menu button was hard to press from my dried sweat. The menu is not bad but sucks compared to the GH4. I know my RX100 is a different form factor, but it gave me a glimpse of how bad the Sony menus are laid out 💀. Sony is so expensive in general. I opened the battery compartment one day, and two pieces that clipped the battery into place just fell out 🥲. There is no instant in-camera slow-mo mode. I've put my GH4 through worse than these two other cameras. I had to whip it out on speed boats, helicopters, and I've run through sand, rain, and muddy fields. It's been 100% intact since 2014. If you were to tell me that the day I opened that box and held it for the first time, I'd be hella surprised. The battery...lasts FOREVER. I can't say that for the GH6 though, cuz they changed the battery. I could care less about AF. As a filmmaker, I was brainwashed to manually focus to make sure it's done correctly. I've never been in a situation where I needed AF. AF seems more useful for vlogging selfie-style. The dynamic range is the #1 thing I care about Panasonic improving significantly. I DON'T like what they're offering. The GH series already has a noise problem, and bumping up the dynamic range slightly by compromising an increased ISO is not the answer for me. 2000 ISO...no. The other improvements I need are correcting the yellow skin tone and increasing low-light capability. I see the GH6 low light is better than my GH4 for sure, but who knows by how much when I use it. My main worry from all these reviews so far from looking at the footage is the white horizontal streaks I see here and there from bright light 😬.
It was easy for me to spot which camera is which, Panasonic colors often leans towards green, Canon is often more contrasty and saturated etc. and Sony is very familiar to me because I have Sony camera.
Thank you for your work. Would you recommend the GH6 or EOS R3 for video work? 60-70% vlogging and 30-40% client work (video and a little bit photo). Especially in terms of video quality and stabilizer / ibis (vlogging...) Thank you for your help and feedback.
What’s ironic is that a version of Panasonics Gh6 camera is actually Netflix approved. That isn’t true for any other handheld camera on the market to my knowledge. Also, Just an amateur opinion. But I’ve noticed that bokeh in someways hides from the true test of image quality in the sense that things look sharper in focus when the background is blurred. What I can appreciate about the GH6 is that the quality x cinematic image you get from it looks accurate x isn’t hiding behind the bokeh that technically fools the eyes. Studying neuroscience before getting into film I learned a lot about how the brain compensates with illusion in terms of what we see. I’d be interested to see how the Gh6 performs in low light. I’ve also learned that the Gh6 is amazing in terms of color grading. Great review!
Thanks for the video, Hugo! What camera are you filming on here when you are speaking? Is it the c200? I guessed that B was the A7Siii and I felt it was the best image..
Can the Sony a7IV film 4:3 4k for long periods of time?... I currently have the GH5, might upgrade to the sony next year... gh5 good although would prefair 4:3 on 4k 30/25fp3 for ticktok 9:16 & youtube 16:9, Awesome video :)
Superb review. 👍 Nice to see GH6 w/high end glass. Strange green skin tint w/GH6 that I haven’t seen in other reviews. Noticed it on unlabeled “C” example and thought “please don’t be the GH6.” Other cameras seem excellent for commercial beauty product content with excellent skin tones. (Many cameras make my skin look green too - Kermit the Frog 🐸)
Damn... it was so hard to tell the difference between those shots at the end. At first I thought I could detect more noise in the GH6 shots, but then they showed even more shots where the R5 and A7SIII had similar noise to the GH6. It's crazy how the GH6 is pulling serious weight going up against full frame cameras like this. I don't own one, but I understand now why my local camera store said the GH6's were flying off the shelves and are back-ordered for months worth of deliveries. Despite any possible auto-focus issues, these are really solid cinema cameras at a relatively low price.
I do like the look of the new OM1 especially when combined with the Panasonic 10-25. It gives you a fullframe 20-50 at F3.4 - this just happens to be the range I work in most of the time.
Great Video Hugo...image quality is very close and while not quite as "dreamy" I thought the DOF was very pleasing and cinematic. So tell which cams were which my friend...or did I miss the reveal!!???
Hugo, this is an awesome review I really enjoyed it, especially with the used glass Now we are 9 months further down the road What do you think of the GH6 today ... ?
The only reason that could prevent me from buying is the HDR bracketing settings called AEB. The GH4 shot brackets of 3,5, and 7 in increments of 1 EV or smaller. It needs to have steps of at least 2 EV for real estate. Could you tell me if the GH6 has AEB 5 @ 2EV??
As usual, nice video and .... nice camera. Thank you for clarifying many aspects. I make only documentaries, which all-round zoom lens can you recommend that can communicate with the body (IBIS) of the GH6 to achieve excellent stability? Is the GH6 tropicalized? Thank you
I honestly can’t advise on that since I didn’t even have time to test stabilization and never was on Panasonic systems.. but I’m sure there should be some good options. I suppose the ibis works well even with lenses with no stabilization
I loved the review and I love that Panasonic does ProRes internally. The issue for me with the comparison is the environment (perfectly lit scene). An iPhone 13 Pro Max could've been thrown in this one. Where the other camera's (specifically A7S3) shine is dynamic range and low light situations. This is why I moved on from my GH5. I'm just an enthusiast but the GH5 struggled when things got dim.
Thanks. Quiet honestly the lighting was far from perfect. We purposefully didn’t wanna do a well lit scenario. We didn’t use any lights, we worked with natural and available lights.
Hi Hugo would you be reviewing canon R5c ? I have been c200 , Nikon D810 , D500 shooter . I got into an accident with c200 and had to sell it unfortunately. So looking to upgrade my gears totally, gonna sell my Nikon gears soon. I'm thinking about getting either canon r5c and r6/r5 OR Sony fx3 and Sony a9iii (if it releases this year) else a9ii . I want to buy canon R5c (coz I already have a lot of ef lenses) but I'm worried that video af and dynamic range might not be as good as Sony fx3. I shoot weddings, events, fashion, sports. I want to know your opinion on canon R5c .
More bokeh is not better, sometimes shallower depth of field is bad like in those A-B-C comparison, GH6 is sharper and the whole object is in focus but still has decent separation, A is blurry mess even the object is out of focus when he moves (not motion blur), B is faster focus (Sony af is king) but still has out of focus moment when he moves and the object is not entirely in focus like right eye is focus left eye is not etc. GH6 is noisier but because of it makes it looks more natural.
thats the problem with bokee shots. nothing is in focus but one eye. thats why many portrait photographers shoot at 5.6-f8. i read most filmmakers dont go faster than f.4 on a full frame or 2.8 on super 35 which is the same depth of field. on mft this would be f2. so more than enough bokee is possible with a mft camera.
U said color accuracy is great, but the color of the book in the background at 12:00 should be red , on the gh6 it’s pure orange.. don’t know is this is due to the grade.....
It’s a graded footage. I used a film emulation and wanted to see how the footage will break when it’s graded since that’s usually the best test for me. It’s not just rec709 since I haven’t done an accuracy test. But overall using Panasonic I found their color space pretty true to life.
Great review, glad to hear your thoughts on the camera. Not surprised at the amount of features Panasonic threw in the camera but I am surprised at how close the dynamic range is the the full frame cameras! It's still not as close at the S1H tho
Great commentary, and thanks for doing the test. Demonstrated just how over hyped the poor Panasonic AF is in TH-camr circles. Attach some high end cinema lenses and focus wise the $2200 GH6 is on a level playing field to the $3500+ a7s II and R5. I picked C as being the Panasonic, mainly due to the depth of field. Were they are shot at the same T-Stop? I know you only had the GH6 for a few days, but did you think it recorded greater detail than the a7s III? The R5 would be the resolution king out of those 3, however record limits and overheating is just too much frustration for me.
Great review, I think that this camera will get a better rep once the first outrage about contrast based autofocus gets less. While I get the disappointment, this camera actually is impressive for its price.
In long term a7sIII all the way. Full frame, dual iso, outstanding af performance for run and gun. Impossible to compare them just because they offer identical fps & 10 bit. I really want to see gh6 on 12800 iso and +50-100 shadows in post compared to a7siii. Also tracking af in dynamic situations. Just impossible to handle it. GH6 mid level camera compared to high-end a7sIII
@@CHTFilms some people will say that’s it’s too easy to say. In this perspective you can just go ahead and buy Alexa right away. It’ll pay off at some point. We have to be realistic, I was once in a place where an extra $500 would be something unreachable and I just couldn’t afford it. There some people who just can’t afford a more expensive camera. There are also a lot of people who aren’t making money yet, and this camera could be all savings to buy a tool that will help them step up and learn more.
@@HugoWill I agree again. That's why they are in different price sections. If we skip the budget part and we compare them just to see which one is better to get I get to the point I will trust Sony. Even if it doesn't have 120fps, 10 bit but it has phase detection AF or even without at least - true full frame experience for better low-light capabilities. That opens up so much situations that you can use and get colorized compositions where the MFT just dies. I was a user of Panasonic g7 and the only part that I liked was nice colors in a good light situation & easy to edit. I've then went to a7sII and that was a huge difference even without phase-detect af. But overall when I went for a Sony the things just became on another level. What about a7c.. still would go for it instead of gh6. I am pretty sure I will prefer even a6600 than gh6. I mean MFT & bad AF in that price range is that what just lost me in 2022 no matter if it is 10 bit n offers 120fps. But that's my personal experience. Now I am a happy owner of a7sIII and I know that I won't need upgrade in next 3 to 6 years just because it offers everything a solo video producer needs.
@@CHTFilms If that adjust the conditions you shot, it's perfect. As a filmmaker I couldn't care less about autofocus. And since all the shots I do are in controlled enviroment, low light is never an issue. Plus that I can throw a Speed booster, have a even larger field of view than a super 35 and 10 bit amazing quality. With the 1500 I save from Sony I can buy more ligths to control and shape the enviroments I shot in. Again, it's all about what you use it for. I can't even think of a situation that I will need to crank my iso to 12800 hahaha... not even with an ARRI.. so that comparision for me will make not difference. Now that IBIS which is probably the bet so far in a mirrorles camera, and all the codec features, those are real case uses for me.
In 2022, Panasonic still sucks at AF. No, really, it's inexcusable. Don't care how much other technology it has built-in. Sony is king and many 'pro' film shooters are appreciating the benefits.
@J R I am selling my GH6 primarily for this reason. The AF is literally like some sort of cripple hammer or something. They have tons of different shooting modes (overkill) but brutal AF? Nuts
@@HugoWill I used to beat myself for choosing the “wrong camera” because of its “horrible dynamic range,” but after using my R5 in the real world (and watching countless videos of people comparing cameras) for several months, I’m not convinced that the extra dynamic range of 1-1.5 stops from competitors is a deal breaker. Most people using these hybrid cameras are not doing Hollywood shoots or $10,000 gigs. They are shooting weddings or small commercials, in which I’d argue that the extra dynamic range wouldn’t matter. If I wanted max dynamic range for bigger productions, I wouldn’t even bring an R5 or an A7SIII; I’d rather bring dedicated cinema cameras for their 15+ stop of dynamic range and better audio inputs and such. Long story short, I think cameras have gotten so good that youtubers have to find reasons to complain for likes and views. The R5 is an amazing camera, even for video, but it won’t compete with dedicated video cameras, and neither will it’s competitors such as the A7Siii and the S1H. There are far more things that make a dedicated video camera more usable than these hybrid cameras than Dynamic range. I’d argue anyone that does film work knows this already.
@@fares3651 the thing is that I’m not saying this camera is for me. It’s just an objective hands-on on a camera. That’s all. I personally had all kind of cameras you can find on the market and I have no problem picking up a camera for myself
I am sorry, Hugo, not gonna lie, but this video was pretty bad. I honestly hated it -- you need to learn how to shoot in 4K quality better. The lighting and angle made it horrible. Way too flashy. I think the A7SIII is the best, period. Cut the rambling. The color grading does not even follow typical realistic human eyes. By the way, what Picture Profile did you use? I am trying to figure out the best one for low light.

Thanks. Same t-stop. Probably a little sharper than A7s because of the resolution
Friends can't tell the difference, but you can :) and that is one big reason you will always wish you had a full frame. :)
Great point!
did you see how bad is antyaliasing on GH6? You can noticed this on the models chain for ex.
Lumix used to be the best on the market in that aspect :(
Gracias, no habia pensado en el recorte anamórfico.
Great review, I think that this camera will get a better rep once the first outrage about contrast based autofocus gets less. While I get the disappointment, this camera actually is impressive for its price.
Can you imagine if they actually fixed the AF!! What a shame.
I picked each camera in the blind test. I prefer the canon
Nikon Z9 has internal ProRes HQ
And a price tag twice as more
@@HugoWill yes it's a lot pricey
How do you see this camera for stargazing timelapses? Will it be good enough? Thanks!
I don’t see a reason why not
Класс!!! спасибо-крутой и полезный обзор!
Thanks
Sony A7s3 showing its age aginst GH6
In long term a7sIII all the way. Full frame, dual iso, outstanding af performance for run and gun. Impossible to compare them just because they offer identical fps & 10 bit. I really want to see gh6 on 12800 iso and +50-100 shadows in post compared to a7siii. Also tracking af in dynamic situations. Just impossible to handle it. GH6 mid level camera compared to high-end a7sIII
There is no question that Sony A7s3 is a better camera. But it’s 1.5k more expensive which is 70% more expensive than Panasonic
@@HugoWill True but 1-5 projects & its paid. I wont trust gh6 on a work that I want errything to be fine and not to miss a moment.
Nuts
The Sony look is the best.
How much is sony paying u to lie?
Cined reported that the R5 has the worst dynamic range for any high end full frame camera unless you film in 8k raw. What a terrible camera
I real life I use R5 very often and it has enough DR. We are as users are too spoiled these days
I could see difference between sony, canon and panasonic. Panasonic looked noisier, i still prefer the full frame.
You get what you pay for
Check out the sigma fp if you don't care about AF and some other stuff
@@fares3651 the thing is that I’m not saying this camera is for me. It’s just an objective hands-on on a camera. That’s all. I personally had all kind of cameras you can find on the market and I have no problem picking up a camera for myself
Why not 2600$ camera cant do reliable AF? whats the excuse! AF is not used by professionals?
Yes
Difference was very evident. Punchy Canon Colours, flat kind but very clear Sony & then the worst of three....
You are crazy, the panasonic colors were the nicest by far
@@Whatsup_Abroad very much agree--the most natural and neutral. Both Canon and Sony seem to have some sort of color cast---didn't like.
@@Whatsup_Abroad nah, skin tones were green, I think his color correction could have been better tho, nothing against the camera
Contrast autofocus is an epic fail
RAMBLING
kkkkk
lame comparison. the bokeh seems small on pana. you should use the same equivalent to FF lenses. the lens use in pana was cheap.
I see Arri Ultra Primes lenses on all cameras. I didn’t use cheap glass on Panasonic
Totally disagree here....this was a very good comparison video, proving that the image quality is very close to its Full Frame competitors.
