    The Norwegian Lundehund, also known as the Puffin Dog, is a rare and unique breed of dog originating from the remote islands of Norway. The Lundehund is known for its unusual anatomy, which includes six toes on each foot, a flexible neck that can bend backward and touch the spine, and the ability to close its ears to protect against dirt and water when digging.
    These traits were developed over time to help the Lundehund hunt puffins, a small sea bird, in their cliff-side nesting areas. Today, the breed is prized for its intelligence, agility, and affectionate nature, but due to its small population size, it is considered to be at risk of extinction.

      The puffin dog is not used to hunt puffins anymore - the puffin is a protected species in Norway.
      It is a probably a complicated problem why the puffin is in decline - but the most probable culprits are climate change and over fishing.

    That's amazing. I would never have guessed that something like extra toes could be a breed specific thing. I always thought of that as a random harmless mutation that could occasionally happen to dogs and cats, but I guess it makes sense it could end up embedded in a breed's genetic code

    Why so many toes? Why does their head do that? Chernobyl?

    • @averypossiblememelord1566
      @averypossiblememelord1566 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1+2) likely an evolutionary trait developed from their ancestors hunting burrowing animals such as small foxes and rabbits, the flexibility would allow them to navigate prey animal’s tunnels more easily
      3) what? They’re Norwegian and Chernobyl is in Ukraine, the two areas are like a fifth of the globe away from each other, why would Chernobyl have any effect on them?

    • @AmericaIsACountry
      @AmericaIsACountry ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Despite having meme in your name, you really can't take a joke. Also, the effects of chernobyl spread throughout Europe. Surprisingly, radiation doesn't stop at country boarders

    • @averypossiblememelord1566
      @averypossiblememelord1566 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@AmericaIsACountry First; ‘Borders’ not ‘boarders’.
      Second; Whilst Chernobyl was a disaster in every capacity, the most mutagenic of its effects is just shortening the lifespan of the local animal population, not giving magic and superpower to people and animals the world over.
      Third; There is no way someone other than yourself could’ve know you were trying to make a joke, there was no build up, there was no previous comment to relate the joke to, there was nothing but the addition of ‘Chernobyl’ and the expectation that everyone who read your comment was a telepath so that they would be able to read your mind and discern your intention for this comment. Don’t try to act snooty to me when you can’t even tell a single joke properly.

    • @AmericaIsACountry
      @AmericaIsACountry ปีที่แล้ว

      @A very possible Memelord the only people who don't understand the joke are boomers like you who think putting memelord in their name will make them cool and hip with the kids. Also, did you not read my comment? It list things that other animals, canines included, normally don't have or aren't able to do. It's a well-known meme to say that animals with extra arms or legs or any other unnatural mutations are from chernobyl. I know that the dog with the extra toes and ability to turn its head completely behind it is an evolutionary trait, but it's still unusual compared to other animals

    • @AmericaIsACountry
      @AmericaIsACountry ปีที่แล้ว

      @A very possible Memelord also the cloud of radiation caused by chernobyl did actually reach Norway, I know geography may be hard for you, so here's a way you can remember it, Norway is in europe, Ukraine is in europe, Norway is closer to Ukraine than it is to almost every other country in the world outside of europe. Your welcome 😊

    They were used to collect young puffins in the autumn, when the fledglings were leaving the nests. Specifically, they collected the ones that didn’t quite get to the ocean when diving out of the nest, but instead knocked themselves out on the mountainside.
