Note that Akita and Shiba are EXTREMELY loyal, so they only accept ONE OWNER.
    Re-adoption rarely succeeds.
So, if you are going to get an Akita or a Shiba, make sure to keep it for the rest of its life. Don't throw it away after a couple of years.

And if they aren't trained properly (and let's be honest, lots of dog owners don't train their dogs properly) they often show aggression. Not exactly what I'd call a "great companion" for toddlers, like this video suggests.
It seems like this channel is purposefully putting all dog breeds into good light, when some are simply not a good pet for the average owner.

I was attacked by an akita, the bitch came to my property and was threatened because I was breathing I guess. I had my walking stick which is big and essentially a shortened bowstaff and it was quite the fight. It would dodge my strikes and jabs while howling like a demon, and thought it was pretty clever be feinting constantly, trying to latch onto my thighs, but once it was almost too slow I grazed it and it reeled back, which gave me the momentum to get at it's flank to attack, which startled it enough to start retreating as I was swinging. When my dad saw what was happening he came out and fired a shot, which caused the demon to perk up and charge at HIM, and it took two more shots and me to run it off. My dad later told me he hadn't lit the mutt up because he'd thought I'd done something to provoke it, because I guess he thinks he raised an idiot who'd go pulling an Akita's tail or throw shit at it. And even if I had that's a beast who officially needs to be sent back to the pit of hell it came from. It's not my first mutt encounter where I've had to deal with a stupid dog raised by a stupider, worthless waste of an owner, but if I ever figure out from where on the mountain that demon came from, it's bitch owners are going to wake up to quite a gruesome surprise, because I don't leave enemies at my back, unlike pops.
On a side note, the bitch that attacked me was stockier, had stubbier legs and much bigger paws as the demons showed here, as well as a tail that was curled but shorter, only in a single loop. Are they a different partial breed that makes them even more prone to deserving death, or was it just a bigger bitch?

My Shiba Inu, Ruu, passed away just over a year ago. She was a beautiful girl. She loved having people play with her face and knock her around. It always looked like she was gonna get hurt but then she'd run right back and nudge them to get them to do it again. I lost her to old age and stomach cancer in 2021. We gave her a beautiful burial in our yard and installed a light over it so she can still shine at night. My other dog Callie was like her big sister and now spends most of her time outside sitting under the light being with her little sister. I will always miss you Ruu, my beautiful baby girl. ❤️

My grandpa lived in the northern mountains of the Tōhoku region in Japan, and he lived as a farmer but would also hunt for food. He had a fiercely intelligent and loyal Akita as his hunting partner, and grandpa made sure that the dog was well socialized so we grandkids can play with him. He was one of the most intelligent dogs I’ve ever seen; he’d be all relaxed and goofy when he was with us kids, but as soon as grandpa would enter his field of sight, all attention was on him like a soldier. They take a lot of training and socializing for them to be cool with people other than their masters, but the result is so rewarding.

exactly this these breeds of inu like Doberman were bred with one job originally hunting and defending their master the only difference is the akita and such were bred to the point they aren't scared of things the size of bears or even actual bears like any strong dog if trained patiently and correctly they are man's best friend the only issue is so many people around the world buy dogs as house pets/status symbols when breeds like the akita Doberman and other big dogs are not capable of being untrained because of their strength like you leave a collie or a retriever untrained they can be awkward but if you have a untrained akita or Doberman you have a dog that was meant to hunt things bigger then us who are not afraid of us and now won't follow orders that is a awful mix

Akitas are not for first time or inexperienced dog owners. While being highly intelligent they are also VERY territorial and don’t bond well with anyone outside of their family. To prevent this it will take HOURS of socializing with an owner that is equally energetic and an owner who is social.
On the other side if you are wanting and extraordinary guard dog, and Akita is the best way to go! Get them as pups introduce them to every living being from day one and keep letting them socialize with them. They will know that they are family and will die trying to protect them.
Akitas are amazing companions but not for the lazy dog owner.

@rsjrx no not like Akitas. If you do not introduce them to other people at a young age, they will not be okay with anyone but who's in your house. You will never be able to have guests again without locking them away. They have an extreme sense of loyalty and are naturally guard dogs. It's not nearly the same thing as say a lab. And even then it's not a guarantee, they might still hate other people and animals. It's just their genetics, all breeds have different traits and genetics if you didn't know. I grew up with Akitas and my parents bred them for a while, not for necessarily money but because they were hard dogs to get in my area. You had to go across state to the Amish, who treated them like shit.

First time Akita owner overview experience here for the ones interested:
(I had two mutts before this one)
    - I got her when she was 2 months old, sweet, shy, apprehensive bean
    - she is about to be 11 months now
    - I walk her since she was 4mo, she is extremely curious about strangers and will look at anyone passing by wishing to sniff them
    - Zero sign of agression so far, but she can play *very* rough if the other (person or dog) rises the bar there
    - She is gentle with gentle people/dog, if they remain calm, my girl will be calm and soon lose interest
    - not interested in being petted by everyone, but will tolerate it
    - light eater, only eats what she needs, will stop if she is full and can even skip meals if she ate more the previous day
    - needs brushing min 1x week, best 3x
    - bath every 3 months has shown to be enough, she smells nothing but fur, not stinky, not dirty, very clean dog (isn't the type to jump into mud)
    - very stubborn, if she is done with training she is (but I always push the bar a bit so she knows I'm the leader)
    - can get very hyped and lose control when zooming, she is already heavy and strong, so if she jumps on me it hurts, if she does too rough i pin her down, and that was enough to teach her to be gentle with me but rough with my husband
    - overall lazy and 2 small walks a day is enough
    - likes play but doesn't last long
    - will stick around like a cat, doesn't want pets or attention all the time, just company
So far I'm having a great experience and grateful I gave the breed a chance, I got from a official breeder, both her parents had great personality (her mom let me let her and her litter without issue!).
I feel I have a best friend that I can trust and that trusts me, she will look after me and wait for me.
    I love my sweet girl.

The main villain is a massive bear.
And the whole anime builds up to this dog leading an army of dogs to fight said bear.

Oh I’d love to own an Atika dog. I met a couple of them in our neighborhood. They were so friendly, so neighborly. They saw me open my back door, as they were outside laying in their driveway. I didn’t say a peep, when they spotted me, they came right over. When my neighbor whistled for them, they returned home in a flash. It was such an unexpected lovely surprise and a moment I’ll never forget.

And always try get your Akita as a puppy. Adoption as adults rarely works well, because they are one-owner dogs. They don’t tend to accept more than one person as “their person”.

if you're willing to invest a lot of effort into it, you might be okay. but you absolutely must, and i never normally say this, get the puppy as young as possible so that it can be socialised not to harm your other dogs (and also humans). they take a huge amount of patience and care, so as long as you can spend most of your time raising and training them you might make it work. you will have to take time off of school/work/college/whatever if you're serious about this, and you don't just want an akita because you saw a 1 minute vid and thought they were cute.

We've had two Shiba's. Our female recently passed at the age of 15 and our 10 year old male is still with us and still plays like an adolescent. They are the PERFECT breed for us, but I'd sure love to have a pair of Japanese Akita's. NOT the "American" version, but the ones featured in this video. There is a HUGE difference in temperament. American Akita's are bred more for protection, not companionship. Nothing wrong with that at all. Just not what we're wanting in an Akita.

1° investigate the owner's land, choose the most strategic point (normally the highest spot) lie down on it, and keep watching, always sitting and paying attention
2°if you have a couple, and the male finds something suspicious, he orders the female to investigate, and she comes back with the feedback
3° they are loyal to only 1 owner
