When my father was a kid in Montana nearly a hundred years ago, the government paid him two cents for each prairie dog tail he brought in. This was part of their eradication program to prevent free range livestock from breaking their legs in prairie dog holes, and curtail prairie dog colonies from destroying planted fields by burrowing and churning up ground and feeding on farmers' crops. He never said how he got them or if he ever made any money. However, he did say his mother made use of every animal he brought her, and that prairie dog "tastes like chicken." The lady in Mike's video would get angry at this past government program. But, people back then did whatever they needed to do to survive. Two cents a tail, a chicken tasty meal, and less holes to create havoc, was a win-win.

When I was a kid, back when there were only 3 channels, if you had a TV, and there was no internet, me and my brothers used to go prairie dog fishing for enterainment. We'd go to a meadow that had lots of prairie dog holes with our fishing poles. Take the hook off and make a small loop on the end of the fishing line then feed the line back through so the end is like a lariat. We'd each put our fishing line loop around a hole then sit quietly waiting for the prairie dogs to start sticking their heads up. When one does you jerk the line real quick. You have to pull them completely out of the hole, if they get back down it you're never getting them out. After we caught them we'd put gloves on to take the loop off and let them go. This would probably be considered criminal today but back then you made your own recreation.

This may be one of my favorite Mike Rowe videos every! One of my earliest memories was taking the ONLY round-trip vacations that my parents took me on that didn't involve going to one of my grandparents home. We traveled around the southwest & visiting Prairie Town was my favorite, out of crossing the border into Mexico, Carlsbad Cavern, Old Tucson, etc.

100 miles north of there. In Borger TX. Those prairie dogs are everywhere. The medians where they usually have grass? Prarie dogs

The first part I thought they were all real sweaty from the heat. Last part, well that explains it! Pretty cool and random. Thanks! 👊🏽
