Back in the day - 15 years ago more or less - my wife and I watched "Dirty Jobs" every chance we could. There was so little else on TV that seemed worth our time, but Mike's style of presenting a story about how everyday people keep society running was a delight to watch. I'm so glad he's still doing this.
I was fortunate enough to have Mike film DJ at my family's farm (Alpaca Shearing) here in NorCal. I can attest that he is even better in person than he seems on film. Just a really good dude.
God bless you Mr. Rowe for not bowing when the wind howls, and for providing a view of people being people. Something sorely missed in modern entertainment.

You really don't know as an average American what Chicken is supposed to taste like until you do. I had no idea until I went to the Northern English Country side and had chicken, it was like eating filet mignon for the first time after only having hamburger your whole life. When I try to explain it to my friends and family they have no idea what I am talking about. They think grocery store chicken is just fine and it's the way you cook it that makes it good. I am so happy to have more Mike Rowe. We missed you man !
Yes @Betty Gehm but my urban and small town English relatives in three areas of England are just as ignorant of real meat and how it should taste. It is not just Americans. The processed grocery store meat is awful. French know how to do chicken!

Only they're not so "great" if you knew how they and the Hutterites rape farmland and don't crop rotate. Plus they pay no taxes because they use the excuse of religion. I know this first hand.
My family raised pastured poultry on our 40 acre farm in the mountains of Virginia very much like these chickens are raised. Unless you done a taste test like Mike did, you can't even believe the difference in taste. It's incredible. Loved seeing the Lancaster countryside. My mom's family is from there.
I'm fortunate enough to have a mother-in-law who still raises chickens, turkeys, and geese and the occasional cow. The difference between store bought eggs, turkey, etc and the ones from her couple of acres is undeniable.
I spent 5 years raising my own chickens, small scale micro farm setup - line breeding, incubating my own selected breeds eggs, raising chicks with a heat lamp… all the way to culling and processing all birds myself every 2 months. It was a hell of a lot of work - and I learned so much. I can never look at a tray of budget chicken from a store - and question exactly how they can make it so cheap. If i factored my time into the costs to raise my birds - it would be unaffordable.

I just want to say thanks. My 4 year old Olivia has seen every episode of dirty jobs 10 times. Now we just started watching somebody's got to do it. She loves them. And just asked me today. Dad when can I meet Michael row. I want to travel all over with him! She is all ready at 6 states and we are planning on 4.more this year .

I've heard a similar story from a farmer's son who was going to school in the city. He had worked in a modern mass produced chicken ranch and he said you can look at those chickens and they were visually different from the ones they were raising at home. Except he inserted the word "tumours" somewhere in his explanation.
Mike - you bring laughs and smiles to our faces everytime. You are a national treasure, and a nice break from all the other crud happening in America (politics, etc).
Those chickens are so laid back and chilled - they not hungry at all, which is a great sign. In a factory farm setup, they would be so bored and stressed - all they would do is eat all day.
Commercial chickens are bred to eat a lot and grow faster. That was the whole point in breeding them that way, to get them from egg to market as fast as possible. Heritage chickens don't taste better because they are fed differently or under less stress, they taste better because they tend to be much older before going to the table since they grow slower.
I am of Pennsylvania Dutch decent and grew up in the county next to Lancaster. I can verify that both the Menonites and Amish are the real deal. No bull except rhe ones they raise. They are the most honest and hardworking people I know.

Mike Rowe is such a gentleman. It's great to see someone so respectful and trustworthy do an informative and entertaining show. On another note, when I had chickens, they would often times ignore food in a container but would fight each other for food that was thrown out on the ground. I think the movement excites them.
Always a pleasant surprise to see Lancaster county featured on tv that showcases our farming heritage. Just a small correction, we pronounce it Lanc-is-ter instead of Lan-kaster. (We always can tell the visitors from the locals) Keep doing what you’re doing Mike, love all that you do!

I loved this episode the first time I watched it. So glad it was posted here so I could enjoy it again. I love how sweet and gentle the Mennonite people are -it just seemed like it was a very peaceful vibe all the way through it. The piéce de résistance was seeing Mike do the dishes. So sweet! ♥️

Yeah, Mr. Rowe is in a broadcast class by himself - a gem! Sincere, helpful, inquisitive, super funny, interesting - and I like how he addresses his camera crew by sharing the wares of the topic - ie; chicken, chocolate. Washed dishes, too??? Now that's a man after my own heart...
Yet again he shows he is truly humble at the end of this show by doing what every gentleman should do when someone cooks for you... He shows them respect and appreciation by doing the dishes. ❤
Thank you Mike for bringing this to the attention of the public. Several years ago I told my husband chicken had no flavor anymore. My dad was very fussy about the source of our food. We had chickens and other animals, beef cattle and pigs. There is no flavor to meat now. We are not wealthy but once in a while I will purchase a good piece of meat. Wow the flavor is amazing! Thank god my husband hunts and fishes. I wish people could appreciate the flavor of what god gave us. Fast food restaurants would fail.
As I was growing up I remember Amish chicken sold in many local supermarkets. Not anymore. Not for quite awhile now. I have also noticed changes even recently in “modern” chicken. My mom would buy Amish chicken. When my husband and I travel to Amish country we stop at their restaurants to have a meal. Definitely need to check the local farmers for buying. Good show Mike.
I have always enjoyed mikes shows. Even when things don't go as planned. He has a personal life that from what ive seen is very upstanding. Hats off to mike and every dirty experience hes suffered through 👍
I throw fish, beef fats, mealworms etc... my chickens go nuts for anything I throw into their pasture. It is awesome to watch the frenzy and worth the taste of free range. Great vid Mike!
Mennoite's would never ever feed other animales to chickens. Wormmeal maybe sure but no way other meat which is not natural to the chickens diets at all.
Mike's the perfect bridge between communities. I live near Amish, I recommend attending their auctions and become a bridge yourself, its a nice day with good prices and good food.

From shows like this or dirty jobs to documentaries, podcast and or just interviews. On so many different types of people places or things you have really highlighted life as we know it.
The chickens were not used to eating veggies. or used to being outside. The broiler chickens will not eat it if it is something new. Chickens don't like change. I appreciate the video Mike! Keep up the important work.
My late mother was from Tennessee and she always said the chicken taste more like chicken in Tennessee than from Krogers and she was correct! My mom was raised on the best organic free range chickens fed table scraps and that make chickens better to eat!

I just had to come point out something very special about these chickens. They're bored. Sean and Sasha at Edible Acres in NY have the MOST amazing chicken system and these chickens here would benefit GREATLY from it! Rather than put the food scraps in neat, segregated tidy boxes, pile it all up on the ground with each other all intermingled. Chickens LOVE to work piles of scraps and get in some natural chicken scratching, it's how they're geared. I understand this farm, as a producer to other health regulated customers, can't let the chickens eat on composting scraps that provide their dose of meat intake in things like worms and insects that gather to the scraps (it's unfortunate for the chickens but understandable), but at least give them some mental enrichment by letting them pull a pile apart. They're bored. More bored than unsettled by the cameras. Ok back to the video, let's make the world a FOOD FOREST with the help of chickens! We are working similarly to the folks in the video to get back to a breed of chicken that produces a good amount of meat on minimal speed. I’ve become very concerned how dependent we are on an inordinate amount of feed for these birds.
My mother was French. We would go back every few years to the small town she was from. When I was younger she would tell me the chicken tastes better in France than in the US. Being a kid, I didn't really think about it much. It wasn't until I got older that I could indeed tell the difference.
That was awesome, as a kid we would go to my great aunts house and she had chickens. When my grandmother and I got off the greyhound bus in the little town, my GA was always cleaning a chicken in the sink. Home garden so she had all the veggies and fresh chicken....those were the summers.
You can see it just in the thumbnail, the free range bird just has more color. There is a butcher down town that only stocks locally sourced meat. My friend bought a free range chicken and cooked it for a couple friends as celebration for finishing our exams. It tasted so good, so much better than indoor raised chickens, I cried
We raised our own meat chickens last year for the first time and the taste of that meat is AMAZING! Nothing like we had ever had before. We are hooked now and so we currently have the next round of meat chicks in the brooder already -Ryan & Cara

I have a huge mennonite colony down the road with a henhouse that holds 40k birds. No point in raising my own birds as they sell to locals. The best chicken I’ve ever had.

I live in a small town in Oregon, 85% Mennonites. They have a bakery which people come from 100 miles away to get and a shop with a bunch of things at very very reasonable prices.
Old fashion free range kitchen scraps fed chickens taste so much better! I didn't believe it myself until I went to an out in the boonies country restaurant here in Southern Ohio. It was the best chicken I had ever had.
The secret to Perdue Chicken: Marigold seeds. I had a friend that worked at the FDA and who worked on the approval for Perdue to use Marigold seeds in their chicken feed. They do two things: they give the healthty golden color to the skin and also help in reducing mites because they are a mild insecticide.
Not only that, but they're an indicator of health after processing. Those carcasses that are pale, indicates the bird didn't absorb the carotene in the marigold petals (I recall it being petals, not seed) properly, which means the bird may have been ill, so they pull the pale carcasses off the line.

I was telling someone that was upset about what happened to male chicks in the egg industry (the ones that go into the grinder) that those are the chicken meal you see on pet food labels. Same that goes for spent hens from the egg industry. And for sure meat bird carcasses that don't pass inspection end up in pet food.
I live relatively close to a lot of Mennonite and some Amish in Ohio. Thank you Mike and crew for being decent human beings and showing a real glimpse into their community. I hope you people continue to support by watching your shows!
Mike - I really do appreciate what you do, stand for and exercise; bringing realism to the masses, if only a small glimpse, in such a "positive" manner (with a touch of humor). Might wanna check out Joel Salatin's "Polyface Farm" in Shenandoah. Permaculture heaven, happiest and tastiest livestock I've ever seen. Joel's got just as much charisma as Mike Rowe. It would make for much better television.

Mike Rowe is a legendary presenter. He would be a legend on the radio with his voice alone-- but his charisma and likeablity on video takes it to a different level.
Wow. This episode was amazing. Reminded me of the better side of people. Many of the things my family used to be when I was a kid. Before the world went crazy. When we used to just spend time together in our "spare time" instead of filling up every second of the day. Dinner was often an even, and the smells permeated the house for hours, so when you sat down, you had been taunted by your senses as a result of mom or grandma's cooking. We need to do better again.
As someone with "backyard chickens", I'm impressed by how chill those chickens were. They're obviously being well cared for... they look like Freedom Rangers...???
So that must be why the coq au vin I had one evening at Chez Yvonne Restaurant in Strasbourg was the best I've ever tasted. Of course, the bottle of wine we had with dinner was also superb.

I'd venture to say I wouldn't taste a difference, since I haven't with anything else (beef, butter, milk, eggs, bison), so far.

Mike, I've thought for years how great it would be to see a show with you and Joel Salatin (the Christian, Libertarian, Environmentalist, Lunatic Farmer) talking about life, philosophy, agrarian heritage and living and more. If you don't know of Joel, I hope that you or your crew will look into him. It would make for a fantastic episode!

I loved this episode the first time I watched it. So glad it was posted here so I could enjoy it again. I love how sweet and gentle the Mennonite people are -it just seemed like it was a very peaceful vibe all the way through it. The piéce de résistance was seeing Mike do the dishes. So sweet! ♥️

Thank you Mike for bringing this to the attention of the public. Several years ago I told my husband chicken had no flavor anymore. My dad was very fussy about the source of our food. We had chickens and other animals, beef cattle and pigs. There is no flavor to meat now. We are not wealthy but once in a while I will purchase a good piece of meat. Wow the flavor is amazing! Thank god my husband hunts and fishes. I wish people could appreciate the flavor of what god gave us. Fast food restaurants would fail.
As I was growing up I remember Amish chicken sold in many local supermarkets. Not anymore. Not for quite awhile now. I have also noticed changes even recently in “modern” chicken. My mom would buy Amish chicken. When my husband and I travel to Amish country we stop at their restaurants to have a meal. Definitely need to check the local farmers for buying. Good show Mike.

I throw fish, beef fats, mealworms etc... my chickens go nuts for anything I throw into their pasture. It is awesome to watch the frenzy and worth the taste of free range. Great vid Mike!
Chickens are omnivores and when fed meat make better eggs and food.
They will eat just about anything !

Mennoite's would never ever feed other animales to chickens. Wormmeal maybe sure but no way other meat which is not natural to the chickens diets at all.

Mike's the perfect bridge between communities. I live near Amish, I recommend attending their auctions and become a bridge yourself, its a nice day with good prices and good food.

The chickens were not used to eating veggies. or used to being outside. The broiler chickens will not eat it if it is something new. Chickens don't like change. I appreciate the video Mike! Keep up the important work.
My late mother was from Tennessee and she always said the chicken taste more like chicken in Tennessee than from Krogers and she was correct! My mom was raised on the best organic free range chickens fed table scraps and that make chickens better to eat!
Never thought a Mike Rowe joint could bring me to tears. Almost every episode of this show has at least one very touching and honestly positive moment. LOVE IT

I just had to come point out something very special about these chickens. They're bored.
Sean and Sasha at Edible Acres in NY have the MOST amazing chicken system and these chickens here would benefit GREATLY from it!
Rather than put the food scraps in neat, segregated tidy boxes, pile it all up on the ground with each other all intermingled. Chickens LOVE to work piles of scraps and get in some natural chicken scratching, it's how they're geared.
I understand this farm, as a producer to other health regulated customers, can't let the chickens eat on composting scraps that provide their dose of meat intake in things like worms and insects that gather to the scraps (it's unfortunate for the chickens but understandable), but at least give them some mental enrichment by letting them pull a pile apart. They're bored. More bored than unsettled by the cameras.

We let our chickens work compost piles! It’s just *aged* - nothing fresh. But honestly it’s all a healthier environment than CAFOs.
@@peachykeen7634 SO happy to hear they get to work piles! I agree about CAFOs most certainly, and again I understand completely about fresh v aged compost usage for commercial meat. I think your farm is lovely I didn't mean to give the impression otherwise if I inadvertently did.
I love chickens and was sad when it appeared they didn't get much enrichment during feedings. I am ecstatic to be wrong.😁
@@shotgunbettygaming that’s not our farm in the video. We have a small pastured poultry farm in southeast Virginia. We are working similarly to the folks in the video to get back to a breed of chicken that produces a good amount of meat on minimal speed. I’ve become very concerned how dependent we are on an inordinate amount of feed for these birds.
I love that Mike actually listens. He shows a humility, integrity and curiosity that I pray I exude in my middle age.
My mother was French. We would go back every few years to the small town she was from. When I was younger she would tell me the chicken tastes better in France than in the US. Being a kid, I didn't really think about it much. It wasn't until I got older that I could indeed tell the difference.
I need a real delicious chicken and the nation needs about 35million Mike Rowe's.

That was awesome, as a kid we would go to my great aunts house and she had chickens. When my grandmother and I got off the greyhound bus in the little town, my GA was always cleaning a chicken in the sink. Home garden so she had all the veggies and fresh chicken....those were the summers.
You can see it just in the thumbnail, the free range bird just has more color. There is a butcher down town that only stocks locally sourced meat. My friend bought a free range chicken and cooked it for a couple friends as celebration for finishing our exams. It tasted so good, so much better than indoor raised chickens, I cried
We raised our own meat chickens last year for the first time and the taste of that meat is AMAZING! Nothing like we had ever had before. We are hooked now and so we currently have the next round of meat chicks in the brooder already -Ryan & Cara

I have a huge mennonite colony down the road with a henhouse that holds 40k birds. No point in raising my own birds as they sell to locals. The best chicken I’ve ever had.

I live in a small town in Oregon, 85% Mennonites. They have a bakery which people come from 100 miles away to get and a shop with a bunch of things at very very reasonable prices.
Old fashion free range kitchen scraps fed chickens taste so much better! I didn't believe it myself until I went to an out in the boonies country restaurant here in Southern Ohio. It was the best chicken I had ever had.

The secret to Perdue Chicken: Marigold seeds. I had a friend that worked at the FDA and who worked on the approval for Perdue to use Marigold seeds in their chicken feed. They do two things: they give the healthty golden color to the skin and also help in reducing mites because they are a mild insecticide.

Not only that, but they're an indicator of health after processing. Those carcasses that are pale, indicates the bird didn't absorb the carotene in the marigold petals (I recall it being petals, not seed) properly, which means the bird may have been ill, so they pull the pale carcasses off the line.

@@shantor100 oh no doubt!!! I was telling someone that was upset about what happened to male chicks in the egg industry (the ones that go into the grinder) that those are the chicken meal you see on pet food labels.
Same that goes for spent hens from the egg industry.
And for sure meat bird carcasses that don't pass inspection end up in pet food.
I live relatively close to a lot of Mennonite and some Amish in Ohio. Thank you Mike and crew for being decent human beings and showing a real glimpse into their community. I hope you people continue to support by watching your shows!
Here in a northern flyover state we value our Hutterite Chicken, and Turkey. We are willing to pay a premium price because we know it is worth it.
Mike - I really do appreciate what you do, stand for and exercise; bringing realism to the masses, if only a small glimpse, in such a "positive" manner (with a touch of humor). So many don't have a clue as to the operations "of life", the basics nor the differences in "value"/quality! Anything that is truly farm raised whether it be livestock or vegetables have a much different flavor and health benefit. Love ya brother! Keep fightin' the good fight. Be Safe
Might wanna check out Joel Salatin's "Polyface Farm" in Shenandoah. Permaculture heaven, happiest and tastiest livestock I've ever seen. Joel's got just as much charisma as Mike Rowe. It would make for much better television.

Wow. This episode was amazing. Reminded me of the better side of people. Many of the things my family used to be when I was a kid. Before the world went crazy. When we used to just spend time together in our "spare time" instead of filling up every second of the day. Dinner was often an even, and the smells permeated the house for hours, so when you sat down, you had been taunted by your senses as a result of mom or grandma's cooking. We need to do better again.
As someone with "backyard chickens", I'm impressed by how chill those chickens were. They're obviously being well cared for...
