    There should be more of this type of training, but for non herding dogs. Teaching people how to train their dogs would be 10x more beneficial than all the places that just train the dogs.

      My understanding is thg that part of dog training is educating (training) the owners. Training the dogs without training the owner does very little to help either.

    • @katiekane5247
      @katiekane5247 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I spent years in animal care, training was a big part. But the problem is the owners most times. They CAN get it but they want their hands held & don't want to accept their contribution to the behavior problem. I just want happier dogs, asap. Significant problem using that to make a living so I concentrated on home care for medically fragile, breeders, farms etc. People don't know how to have dogs any better than they know how to raise kids. The stuff we fail to teach, SMH

    Oh man! This was great show - loved you and Terrie!
    I had a GSD who lived to 15 y/o - we did obedience (and SAR) together - she failed her final obedience trial but they actually gave her a 'new' award - the most sarcastic entrant! She leaned way, way forward but never moved on the sit/stay when I walked off; slid to a stop in front of me when recalled; exploded around to the 'finish' and laid her head against me looking at me; laid on her side for the long down; totally ignored all the other dogs but crawled over to a little kid at the ring edge then crawled back to her spot on a 'down/stay'. The judges were actually giggling - and we were having a blast (we didn't care that she missed due to the finer points thing) - she *loved* when we did training; she also knew all the 'basic' tricks.
    God forbid you were outside when a storm came - she would 'herd' you into the house - and once the door was shut she ran for the bathtub .... I still miss her ... best dog ever!!

    • @marahdolores8930
      @marahdolores8930 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your GSD sounds like a wonderful dog, and I wish you had video footage of her final obedience trial to share with us.
      I started learning obedience training with a club near Ft Worth, TX back in '92, and after moving, with a NADOI-certified instructor that worked through a small town parks & rec department. I also joined another dog obedience club, and we drilled in Mardi Gras parades, we worked on flyball, we did agility work, we trained for competitive obedience and therapy dog certs, we fooled a little with herding, and we did CGC testing. My Aussie Chow cross I owned at the time failed for reasons similar to your GSD's, so seeing your memories warmed my heart. Thank you for sharing that.
      My oldest daughter took her first training class at age 8, and we went on later to do SAR training with her Catahoula cur rescue dog.
      Learning to train your dogs provides such rich rewards that go on for decades with every dog you will own. Why people own dogs and refuse to bother to learn how to train their companions is just beyond me. Dog training is one of the most satisfying life-skills I've ever learned.

    • @clwest3538
      @clwest3538 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marahdolores8930 Thank you for your story - I enjoy hearing other people's 'dog experiences' - you are so correct about the 'rewards' of training. Pawsha (my GSD) changed my life - literally. I loved training her and people to work with their dogs so much I left 17 years of working in the corporate world to be a puppy-parent trainer.
      After several years of training I moved to being a dog groomer - my specialty is training puppies to be groomed - something they will be doing the rest of their lives - and 're-training' old cranky dogs who have had a bad experience at grooming (been doing that now for 18 years).
      Watching the 'light go off' in their heads and gaining their trust is so rewarding.

    we have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and were always struck by his need to have people and things herded into a tidy little group. We learned about a local farmer who would test your dogs’ natural instincts and so we let our pup loose in a pen with some sheep. At first, he looked pretty disinterested but when the sheep started reacting, boy howdy, so did he and he ran them in circles, weaving and barking and having the time of his life. Best $20 I’ve ever spent, to see the joy on his face and watch the natural athleticism that is inherent with the breed.

    I grew up with a border collie, and trained her with a whistle, too. Unbelievably smart dogs. Trained her for joring, and before I knew it, she could not only follow whistle commands, but follow traffic laws. It always amazed me that just through observing my behavior and commands, she learned to stop at stop signs and look for other vehicles before continuing.

    I've watched about half of this and it's TONS of fun. Terri Parrish is a professional for sure, but more than that, she knows and plays to the strengths of the dogs and their handlers. Mike and Terri are both doing a GREAT job playing the foil for each other. I love how well Brice chased down and brought that flock of sheep back all on his own. And he was smart enough to know he needed to jump straight into the water to cool down. Good boy, Brice! I plan to come back later and finish the episode.

    Oh Mike, you were in my home back yard... I am so sorry I could not have been there... but after watching this episode...probably a good thing. I laughed my tacos right out my nose as Terry was telling you which way to run. LOL. Thank you for ALWAYS making me laugh, freeing me of thoughts in this world and coming back to the simple things of life that bring smiles and laughter.

    We have a border collie. Her job is to keep an eye on the dogs that come here to stay with us (we do not operate a kennel) a few days because their owners have to go somewhere. Most of them listen to her commands. She also tells us when they need to go out. She is our business partner.

    I grew up with a bordercollie and we barely had to train her to be well behaved. When I was little she would let me lay my head on her to take naps and would sit at the end of our drive way like a sphinx and would just quietly watch and stare down anything or anyone that went by our house. And a few times she easily jumped over our 6 ft fence into our neighbors backyard.

    My father trained sheepdogs for working and for trials here in the UK. A border collie sheep dog though has an innate desire to herd. It isn't something that just any dog can do. A puppy border collie will herd hens and when they are puppies its easy to tell if they have 'the eye'. If they don't have it they never will. The training is only to allow the farmer/shepherd to control the direction the dog runs and where it brings the sheep to. We had one on the farm that would get out of her kennel just to herd the hens in the farmyard on her own. She didn't hurt them. She just liked them in a tidy flock. All border collies love doing it and they have phenomenal brain. There is a video on the internet somewhere of a border collie bringing sheep from the high hills with a Go Pro on. Its an amazing video and they can run miles on the hills all day.

    I got a two-year-old Border Collie in 2020. I lost 140 pounds over the next 10 months and got back into decent shape. They are the most amazing dogs, but they must have a lot of care and attention.

    I’ve had Labs, Huskies, Pitt Bulls and 3 different Boarder Collies. By far the most high energy dog ever. Way more than my 3 huskies put together. They are great guard dogs, super cuddly, amazing with kids, but be ready. They can be exhausting if you’re not ready for your dog to hyper focus on it’s ball for 18 hours a day 24/7 for 80% of its lifetime. I will literally have to take the ball away and hide it so they’ll chill out. These dogs really do need a flock of sheep to take care of. 😂

    Loved this episode! As someone who's been going to herding lessons and trials on and off since 2003 (sheep and ducks) training Cardigan Welsh Corgi's, I can safely say after 20 years I still have no idea what I'm doing. It's really, really hard. But my dogs love it and I love giving them an outlet like that.
