Classic Kermode: Last Days

  • 2005 was not a great year for the Good Doctor: He had to endure Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects, the first Terry Gilliam heartbreak with The Brothers Grimm, the infuriating schmaltz of Elizabethtown, the glamorization of football hooliganism with Green Street, and of course, the numerological Kabbalistic claptrap that was Guy Ritchie's Revolver.
    But none of these films got under Dr. Kermode's skin like Last Days, his worst film of 2005.

    Michael Pitt was good in the Dreamers and in Boardwalk Empire, like Nick Stahl they have substance abuse issues, but when they're good, they're good.

    I really enjoyed this film.
    But then again I'm the sort of dude who likes to stare out of windows for long periods of time at nothing.
    I just really like the idea of creating a cinematic language where every detail is as important as each other, for me it created a really hollowing effect when he killed himself and its portrayed no different to anything else, same as how in elephant the shooting scenes are shot no different to the school day before hand.

    This is a very surreal conversation. None of your answers remotely correspond to anything I've said. It's an interesting tactic, because it makes it hard for me to argue against any of it. It also makes your argument totally incomprehensible mind, but you can't always get what you want (as Jagger would say).

    *I was a huge Nirvana fan back in the 90's and was sad when he died like all of the fans were, but this movie was a HORRIBLE insult to ANYTHING Kurt-related. He spends the entire movie mumbling, the dialogue from the rest of the band is trash and there's NOTHING memorable about it. If you walked into this movie NOT knowing ANYTHING about Nirvana and Kurt, you'd think the only thing Kurt and his band did was alot of drugs, that Kurt was verging on mentally challenged and the band was terrible. It was GARBAGE.*

    It would seem to me that this film reached a new level of badness on Mark's scale. It's not ordinary-bad, as in not enjoyable. It's not funny-bad, as in hilariously awful like Troll 2. It's not even bizarre-bad like The Room or Birdemic. It's like Mark can hardly even believe he saw something so bad and is almost losing his sanity over it. I'd call it "Lovecraftian-bad".
    Btw, I haven't seen the film, I'm simply talking about Kermode's comments on it.

    I really likes last days..my take on it was how possibly tormented and distraught by his addiction and the music industry the Blake character is..It is a very slow moving film if you don't like these type of movies..but I Love how Gus van sant's use of colors/sunlight..and alway has the very realistic background noises stand out..I guessing last days is not supposed to be nirvana but very very closely based characters that parallel much like historical fiction

    This was part 2 of Gus Van Sant's Tumbleweed Trilogy, where hollow windswept echoy crap plays out for an hour an a half. Witless cinema that's excruciating to watch.

  • @MrKeepitunderyourhat
    @MrKeepitunderyourhat 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you ever going to actually come up with an argument, or just make vague, unchallenging statements? The fact is, Last Days is a terrible movie, and you haven't yet come up with any argument to the contrary. Van Sant occasionally has his moments, but this wasn't one of them.

    @MrKeepitunderyourhat 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ah, the word 'hipster'. The standard attack of anyone who doesn't really have a strong argument. What exactly about my reply makes me a hipster? If anything, Last Days and it's fans conform to the 'hipster' stereotype of liking something they consider arty and obscure, and claiming that it's detractors 'don't get it'. But as you've just proved, hipster has no real definition and therefore doesn't work as an argument. Nice try though.

  • @MrKeepitunderyourhat
    @MrKeepitunderyourhat 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @l4dyvenge4nce I didn't say his opinion is law, I disagree with him about many things, but saying he 'doesn't get it' is a stupid argument. It's such a pathetic cop out. And there is a certain irony in you accusing critics of only liking obscure, arty shit in defense of a film that is obscure, arty shit. When he's on form, Van Sant is a great director, and we get films like Elephant and Drugstore Cowboy. When he isn't, we get crap like Last Days and Restless.

  • @l4dyvenge4nce
    @l4dyvenge4nce 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MrKeepitunderyourhat wow a film critic, in my experience of film critics they only like obscure, arty shit that no one except film critics like. But hey as he is a film critic he must be god of movies, his opinion is law... yada, yada, yada. Fool.
