Blue Jay Way is a street in the West Hollywood hills just east of Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. George Harrison was living there when he wrote this. Side one is a Britush EP soundtrack to a TV special by The Beatles. The film was considered one of their few failures. Finding out who is who in tracks is definitely a process that becomes easier the more you listen to The Beatles. I think it’s cool that there are more younger Beatles fans! I was born in the 2000s. The best way I can explain it is that John has a high-pitched nasally-sounding voice. He can often sound raspy, but not always. He sings on songs like “Norwegian Wood,” “I’m Only Sleeping,” “For The Benefit of Mr Kite!” “Come Together,” and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy.) When John and Paul harmonize, John often sings the power notes, and Paul often sings the higher ones. Paul has a wide range. He can be soft and melodic on songs like “Michelle,” “Hey Jude,” “Here, There, and Everywhere.” He can also surprise you with deeper and more intense vocals like on “Oh! Darling” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” I would describe George as sounding somewhere in between Paul and John? George has the most noticeable Liverpudlian drawl. They all can have similar ranges, I think. George sings on songs like “Think For Yourself,” “If I Needed Someone,” “Taxman,” “I Want To Tell You,” “Within You Without You,” “Blue Jay Way,” “Something,” and “Here Comes the Sun.” Ringo is the easier for me to distinguish. He has the deepest or lowest voice. He sings in songs like “With a Little Help from my Friends,” “What Goes On,” and “Octopus’ Garden.” He also has a prominent vocal in the harmony on “Carry That Weight.” I hope this helped at least somewhat. I also encourage you to watch live performances/music videos if you can, so you may be able to attach the vocals to the face.
Hey I caught up to ya! I just watched the last couple not really paying attention they were from a couple weeks ago. I recommended this album my last comment and the White Album for the next. 😃 It's been really fun going through this with you and haven't listened for years but it was my childhood so I have to say get a little teary eyed. One of my first memories was seeing the lads on Ed Sullivan. With three teenage sisters they "were around" for several years. I hadn't really thought about it but I was ages 4 to 11, my "formative years" during The Beatles absolute dominance. They were on the radio, on TV shows, on the news, they made movies, and those albums...this one has a lot of pages of crazy pictures if I recall.
So good to see someone as young as you taking the time to listen to older music and appreciate it and listen to the production. The Beatles were heavily influenced by the black soul music from America in the beginning. I never used usually watch reaction videos but you do a really good job . 👍
Loving all your Beatles reactions! It may be a little late now, but I highly recommend that you do a quick check on who is singing lead for each song before you listen. When you KNOW who is singing, while you listen, you’ll learn their voices much more easily. And it adds to the enjoyment as you can picture that person in your mind while hearing their voice. Keep up the great work-looking forward to more!!
I have been to Penny Lane and to Strawberrry Field (the place that inspired John Lennon to write the song). Liverpool is a great place for Beatles fans, there is a Beatles museum and even a tour bus named "Magical Mystery Tour".
I am 60, I no longer want to learn how to play the game, but I can confirm that I learned how to be me in time. Strawberry Fields Forever is such a beautiful song. George Martin and The Beatles did a lot of experimentation in the production, with different instrumemts, and with effects like reversing some of the recordings. The Paul Is Dead rumor was a weird thing that took hold fir a while. People would look for clues that he had died, and was replaced by a double. One New York late-night radio DJ spent a whole show discussing it. Allegedly, the "cranberry sauce" at the end of Strawberry Fields Forever" says "I buried Paul" when played backwards. They also claim that what they are wearing in the famous Abbey Road photo represents their roles at a funeral. It's all ridiculous, and nobody really believes it. Fun video!
There is a whole subculture of conspiracy believers, like flatearthers. They absolutely believe that the man who claims to be Paul McCartney is an imposter. And there is no hope in persuading them otherwise. Like most conspiracy nuts, they don't generally subscribe to logic or scientific fact. But they do exist.
Really enjoyed your reviews of the beatles albums benji , positive vibes man...I'm 36 but was lucky I discovered the beatles when I was a boy, they are timeless...can't wait for the white album review 🫶
I think their earlier albums are a must listen as well, even if they are a lot simpler. Yes, they may be slightly more formulaic and less crazy, but still catchy nonetheless. I (like most people) do prefer their later work, but I think their earlier stuff is quite often overlooked (just how it seems to me). I also recommend their "Past Masters" album, both Vol.1 and 2, but they basically count as one album. It's a compilation of all of their singles.
@@blackboybenjiiGood news. To hear them only 2-3 years earlier in their career will be a massive trip for you. They conquered pop and rock and roll music, too 😊

My lifelong love of the band made me create a double dvd collection of 150 Beatles video's, that took me 3 years to fined the material and produce the duel dvd collection. That's Love.
There's also a Mellotron used on some of the tracks. This is a keyboard that plays short loops of tape. This means they can have the sounds of violins, flutes or whatever you can Imagine.
56 year old Brit, life long Beatleette. Loving your first responses to hearing this amazing band. Think you realise how great George Martin was aswell. I can't remember the first time I heard them so it's refreshing x
Picture this, it's the summer of 1967, the height of flower power, the summer of love. The Beatles laid down this track live, complete with mini orchestra, on the very first global TV satelite link up, to a global audience of over 400 million people! What a message to give to the World. The footage is out there, you should check it out!
After you’ve done the White Album, it’ll be interesting to see your reactions and thoughts on Danger Mouse’s Grey album where he mashed up the white album and the Black Album from Jay-Z. You might enjoy that one. In the meantime keep up the good work!
Good choice of album to review - most other reviewers overlook this one, also, glad to see you getting the lyrics up, you'll also need them for when you listen to Pink Floyd. (What do you mean, you didn't know you'd be reviewing Pink Floyd ? Oh you will, you certainly will!)😂😂😂
As an individual with physical disabilities due to MS, I am not rich as far as finances but the wisdom, perseverance and perspective gained by those in my situation money cannot buy. 😊
In my opinion strawberry fields forever is one of the best beatles songs ever. I love the instrumentation. I think the instrument that you heared in the fool on the hill is a recorder. Love the videos ❤ keep it up!
That flute-like instrument in Fool Hill is a recorder, the same one kids learn how to play in primary school. But that doesn’t mean it’s a low class 😏 or disrespected instrument: there are orchestral pieces written for it.
My mum gave me her copy of this collection of vinyl in the original sleeve when I was 11. I Am the Walrus was my instant favourite and remains one of my all-time faves 😊
I think the chorus you are questioning on Fool On The Hill is just this person just watches the world go on and never contributes or contemplates his place. He’s a fence sitter and he’s a fool because of it! That’s my two quid, bruv.
The instrument you repeatedly asked about coming in on the transitions on "Strawberry Fields Forever" is a traditional Indian instrument called a "swarmandela" chosen and played by George Harrison. He was the Beatle most influenced by traditional Indian music.
Blue Jay way is a song about George staying in laurel canyon in LA and John, Paul and Ringo were supposed to stop by . George dropped acid before they got there and the guys got lost and never showed up.
I love your reactions and that you enjoy the Beatles so much. Don't forget to react to their first albums. They are also wonderful, sometimes we forget how much they contributed and how important they were. An example is the album A Hard Day's Night, it would be interesting if you did a reaction. Of course, you can't miss the reaction to the white album. Magical Mistery Tour is a more eclectic album, the first listen is more difficult. With more listens, I'm sure you'll love it as much as the others.
George just double tracked his vocals for this one. That gives it that "doubled" voice effect. They also used a Leslie Cabinet with a rotating speaker to get the "warped" effect.
John wrote and sang "I am the Walrus". He had discovered that college classes were trying to decipher the meaning from his lyrics, so he wrote a song (like most he makes up) that really has no meaning at all.
This album was originally an EP, but later became an album with more songs added... I Am The Walrus, Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, Blue Jay Way, OMG what amazing songs here... And you are right, LOVE IS ALL WE NEED, an you bring love with youy videos, thank you Banji!!!
6:36 That's Paul playing a recorder. The "Hill" I always understood to mean Capitol Hill. I leave it to others to know who the fool is. 10:08 The one you don't recognize is this keyboard thingy just invented a couple years before called a Mellotron with John playing. 15:51 That's classical musician Peter Willison on cello. Side note: If I had a house (5-15 million dollars) on Blue Jay Way I would be very nervous right now. 20:52 John asked the engineer to make him sound like he was "from the moon" and the solution he came up with was the studio intercom crappy microphone. BTW The crying could very well be for Brian Epstein, lost only days before to an overdose of sleeping pills. Crazy to think such a brilliant man felt the need to hide being gay. In the music world! 35:23 I'm going to say that's a swarmandal, and Indian stringed instrument of course played by George.
I heard that the inspiration from Fool on the Hill came from when Paul was out on a walk with his dog and he looked over at a far away hill and saw a strange looking man, looked away for a second then looked back and the man was gone. idk if that's true but I love that story lol
@ What's interesting about that to me is not the story itself but that I simply heard that decades ago and my brain just went with it, sounded about right. Now so many years later with the google machine I only now check on what you said to find that seems to be the story. I never thought about the fool being a positive. i.e. how information is received, spread, stored, and assimilated is soo different! Not always a great thing either. Fast though.
First two albums I ever owned when I was like 6 were Thriller and this. This album spurred my imagination so much I was obsessed with it. Still one of my all time favorites ever. Every track’s a banger
I've been to Penny Lane. My wife and I signed the street sign that Paul McCartney signed. There's a bus tour in Liverpool called "The Magical Mystery Tour" that's well worth taking. It'll take you to Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields, and many other Beatles' sights. Great reaction, young man. I applaud your interest in the Beatles. It's great to see a new generation learning to appreciate their music. John sings, Baby You're a Rich Man and I am The Walrus.
In 1967 the Beatles gathered a bunch of friends and released this song to the first live TV broadcast around the world. About 400 million people around the world watched and i’m sure sang along! (All You Need is Love)
This album is a SOUND TRACK to their movie the Magical Mystery Tour that didn't do well in the UK so it only made it to the Album the Magical Mystery Tour. For some good reason this album stood out as a great album and has stood the test of time.
When the film was shown on British TV at the time over Christmas if I remember currently was broadcast in black and white which didn't help it's visual magic presentation. It was badly received by the media at the time but everyone I knew loved it especially later, after seeing the colour version.
Magical Mystery Tour was not intended to be an LP. Instead, it was a collection of songs cut out of the main album /Sgt Pepper's Lonely hearts Club Band or random songs), this EP was the soundtrack of a crazy movie by the Beatles (directed for the major part by the young Paul McCartney, age 25). Just and only in America Magical Mystery Tour came out as an LP.
One thing you should know about All You Need is Love…find the music video. The Beatles were no longer touring. But they wanted to perform for the world. They wrote this song and decided to perform it on a worldwide satellite feed…THE FIRST OF IT’S KIND…there had never been a single performance being seen simultaneously around the world. Satellite tv was brand new. And the Beatles were always cutting edge. So they wanted THIS MESSAGE: All You Need is Love and Love is all You Need to be the message from them to people around the world. On top of it, they decided to record it Live at the same time. You can see the video and you will notice who was there….The Rolling Stones, and Timothy Leary, a professor from Harvard who had encouraged his students to try LSD and to Tune in, Turn on, and Drop Out of society. And really, the Beatles were interested in introspective topics…deep thinking and meditation. So everyone started doing that and embracing brotherly love as a philosophy. This was a huge hit. People loved this song. It helped define their generation.
Paul wrote and sang MMT, fool, mother, Hello goodbye, and Penny Lane. George wrote Blue Jay way. All 4 have writing credit for FLYING (a jam). and John mainly wrote and sang the rest. On many songs, John and Paul (and George) would help with a verse or intro for others songs. The one writing the main trunk of the song, is almost always who sings it. John has the forceful nasal voice, Paul has the incredible range and "round" voice. George has a "lighter" voice but not too far from John's and Ringo has the deep voice.
Umpah Umpah Stick it up ya jumper ! They do a great Beatles tour in Liverpool and take you to Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane and the houses they lived in.
Some of these songs were being worked on during the making of Sgt Pepper’s, but didn’t make the cut or were not finished. I am the Walrus was one of those songs….it ended up taking 55 hours to produce/record. Very intricate and artistic recording using gibberish lyrics. Which proved that any song the wrote at this point, could become a huge hit. Everyone, including critics were big on trying to interpret their lyrics. John wanted this song to be a challenge to those folks. Ha! Funny! “What’s it about?” they would ask. Blue Jay Way in L.A. is a street where the Beatles were supposed to meet at a house. This is George’s composition. George had flown in and got there first and the rest were very late. So he wrote this while waiting
MMT is a kind of throw away Beatles album…the highlight is I Am The Walrus. But you see even the Beatles throwaway album is better than a lot of people’s real albums.
I'm the walrus is John singing but later he says that the walrus was Paul in another song. In the video they're all in animal costumes you don't see their faces. Watch the official video. You will see John singing at the piano.
I think Paul was chosen to represent the dead man. He represents the death of the Beatles working contract for the record companies to the rebirth of the Beatles now owning their own recording studio. Then walking across Abbey road is them coming from the grave site to go back into the studio with the resurrected Paul and record the song come together.
@@robertc8072 I agree. Many, perhaps most of us, tend to view our conclusions -especially over time -as fact 😉 I think it’s far more likely they were told suddenly “We have to have a cover photo” and they said “Let’s just go outside.” But that’s not a fact 😁
I'm in all your Beatles reaction videos, congratulations great reaction again, very true, a tip still both let it be and the white album have better mixes than the 2009 ones, let it be 2021 and the White Album from 2018. Sorry for all the videos commenting on this but the most recent mixes improve the experience of listening to the Beatles.
@@dcg4mn I particularly hate the 2009 mix, especially Sergeant Pepper's, It's a shame he didn't listen to the 2017 version, which is a delight to listen to, the sounds are crystal clear in that version.
Beatles Instrumentation: Learn about string instruments (low should be cellos; high violins; also harp) and brass (from low is tuba, trombone, French horn, trumpet) and then various percussion. If you want to know you can find out on your own with some listening research. The instruments are deliberately chosen for a reason.
No one is “mad” at you for not knowing everyone involved with the Beatles. Just trying to set you straight once in awhile, that’s all. You are coming along on this journey, just fine.
The "lift up your hearts" lyric is spooky as the doctor who tried to save John Lennon's life at the NY hospital claims he "lifted up his heart" and tried to massage it....) And this album was released 13 years to the day before the assassination.
Fyi, the beatles got so big that the pressures caused them to stop touring. Psychedelic drugs and the death of their manager mentor brian epstein changed their outlook on a lot of things. In truth the beatles were cracking up thru differences but stayed together nonetheless. Hence Hello goodbye. The situation stayed in stasis thru personal loyalties. During the Let it be phase GEORGE actually left the band. They de ided to record Abbey road after let it be. I always thought that here comes the sun was a reaction to the effort to go out positively because they were well aware of legacy they made to society.
This wasn't an album actually. The first side was the soundtrack to their critically panned TV-movie 'Magical Mystery Tour'. The second side stating with 'Hello, Goodbye' was a record company decision to take a number of their singles and compile them. The Beatles had a habit of putting out even more great music that never appeared on albums. The record companies always found a way to milk a profit.
If you'd like to take a trip down Penny lane without having to actually go to Liverpool, you might enjoy watching the episode of Carpool Karaoke that featured Paul, revisiting many of the places mentioned in the song, as well as his former council house home, winding up the day at a local pub where Paul and his band act as a hitman jukebox of Beatles hits to the delight of the patrons. It's about 20 minutes long, IIRC, so perhaps a reaction to it would not go amiss?
What an incredible album and of course the album starts with a bang with Magical mystery tour and I'm here for the ride. This album was released after Sgt Pepper Goo Goo Gjoob!!!

It’s Paul on Fool On A Hill and the instrument is a recorder. We used to play them in school like 4th and 5th grades. Paul is playing it.

It wasn't a recorder. It was a slide whistle. Basically the trombone of recorders.

It was a double EP in England, but always released as an LP in the U.S. at Capitol’s insistence.
Fool on the Hill is about the Maharishi, not Capitol Hill, according to Paul. But yes, I see your point about the fool.
Blue Jat Way is a street in LA. George stayed up all night waiting on this friends. it was written and played on an organ.
This album was all the singles that were on any albums after the album Sergeant peppers
Definitely listen to the White Album next! It’s a wild ride!
I got you!
@blackboybenjii white álbum mix 2018
i am so excited for you to do the white album you don't even understand
In 1967 the Beatles gathered a bunch of friends and released this song to the first live TV broadcast around the world. About 400 million people around the world watched and i’m sure sang along! (All You Need is Love)
Which song are you talking about?
This album is a SOUND TRACK to their movie the Magical Mystery Tour that didn't do well in the UK so it only made it to the Album the Magical Mystery Tour. For some good reason this album stood out as a great album and has stood the test of time.
When the film was shown on British TV at the time over Christmas if I remember currently was broadcast in black and white which didn't help it's visual magic presentation. It was badly received by the media at the time but everyone I knew loved it especially later, after seeing the colour version.

Yes, the movie has gained greater respect over time.
Baby youre a rich man is john (also john on all you need is love, i am the walrus, strawberry fields)
20:55 It’s John
Basically Sgt Peppers part 2… and it’s awesome.
Blue Jay Way and Strawberry Fields must have been the craziest thing kids heard back in the 60’s😂
Yes! I went to Liverpool and to Penny Lane because of the Beatles and this song. It was an amazing trip!
Baby you're a rich man is John singing.
released in '67 after sgt peppers. Side 1 was the soundtrack to a 53 minute tv film.
George has a "lighter" voice but not too far from John's and Ringo has the deep voice.
love ur reactions mate, but can u enlarge the window on the screen for us to see as well! much love, keep at it
Blue Jay Way is a street in L.A, quite near Laurel Canyon.
Umpah Umpah Stick it up ya jumper ! They do a great Beatles tour in Liverpool and take you to Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane and the houses they lived in.
If you want harmonies listen to- If I fell -from the lp A Hard Day's Night
I am the walrus did not come from sgt pepper’s sessions. Only Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields
MMT is a kind of throw away Beatles album…the highlight is I Am The Walrus.
But you see even the Beatles throwaway album is better than a lot of people’s real albums.
It's John singing on I am the walrus
I'm the walrus is John singing but later he says that the walrus was Paul in another song. In the video they're all in animal costumes you don't see their faces. Watch the official video. You will see John singing at the piano.
I think Paul was chosen to represent the dead man. He represents the death of the Beatles working contract for the record companies to the rebirth of the Beatles now owning their own recording studio. Then walking across Abbey road is them coming from the grave site to go back into the studio with the resurrected Paul and record the song come together.
Did one of the Beatles say that?
If so, source please.
Yeah, I've never read that before. I think that may be OPs opinion rather than fact.
@@robertc8072
I agree.
Many, perhaps most of us, tend to view our conclusions -especially over time -as fact 😉
I think it’s far more likely they were told suddenly “We have to have a cover photo” and they said “Let’s just go outside.”
But that’s not a fact 😁
All you need is Love was the first live via sattelite television program
I am the Walrus is *the* song to do at karaoke :) with all the laughter and sound effects, goo goo de joob
Producer GEORGE MARTIN helped find all the sounds The Beatles were looking for.😊
Another great reaction.
Thank you 🫡
baby youre a rich man is one of my top 5 beatles songs. Also i am the walrus. this album is my fave or theirs
John answers your question at 49: 46 on the timer when he says "yes, he's dead"....
most underrated album ever
Hell yeah
No, the voice is John.
Love is all you need.
What’s the best mix for this album MMT?
This one he’s using is awful.
@dcg4mn This album does not have a newer mix, but many of the songs on it are on the blue compilation that was remixed in 2023.
@
whatever the reason this does NOT sound like the original vinyl mix (which as teens we memorized every note)😉
@@dcg4mn I particularly hate the 2009 mix, especially Sergeant Pepper's, It's a shame he didn't listen to the 2017 version, which is a delight to listen to, the sounds are crystal clear in that version.
@@viniciusgomeslazaretti8904
I’ll hunt it down thanks 🤘🏽
I am The Walrus is John. He’s got that nasally rasp in this song especially. I think he sounds a bit similar in songs like “I’m Only Sleeping.”
Side 2 of this album has their singles of 1967 as well as the a-side to i am the walrus
And all of these were recorded in 4 tracks
The middle or psychedelic period included the 3 albums: revolver, sgt pepper, and magical mystery tour
A hard's day nigth will be great
On voit que tu es tomber amoureux des Beatles toi aussi ahaa
Amazing music ❤️
I think there's both a flute and a recorder on the album.
