I liked that they showed Jane being one of Catherine of Aragon's maids of honour in Henry VIII. They didn't show her before Anne's arrival in the other movies and tv shows I watched.

Throwing in "Six" and "Anna Bolena" makes perfect sense, though they aren't "on screen" representations. They're still acted representations, so they work well in the context of your rating videos.

No offence to Jane, but I feel like Lesley Paterson was too young and pretty for the role (as well as having the wrong hair colour). She would have made a good Catherine Howard.

Anne Stallybrass is literally the perfect Jane of Seymour to me. I thought the characterization was spot-on, where she's kind and gentle but also intelligent and struggling and not a total doormat. And she's also possibly THE only actress I've seen play the role who actually resembles the surviving portraits of Jane.
I would probably have rated Emilia's Fox's version higher than you did - it's true that she doesn't get a lot of scenes, but when she does speak her mind it's on issues we know the real Jane actually did care about, and I like that they let her stand up to Henry even though they then take it way too far by having him throw her down while she's pregnant (which I agree, the real Henry would never have done). But I may also be influenced because I like Emilia Fox as an actress (funnily enough with the Rebecca comparisons you made in this video, she actually played the 2nd Mrs. de Winter in the 1997 Rebecca miniseries, which I highly recommend!)

I really enjoyed this video! Have been loving this series. To be entirely honest, I cannot stand the portrayals of Jane Seymour as the sweet and innocent girl -- possibly because they always seem to depend on Anne Boleyn being awful and somehow 'deserving' what she got, but likely also because I just cannot fathom how anyone could think a 29-year-old woman who had been at court for at least a decade, and saw the court go through two of the biggest scandals of the century, could be unaware of what she was doing. I also just cannot credit that any woman could watch what he did to Katherine (whom she loved) and then to Anne, and fall in love with him anyway? I can understand interpretations where she's got no choice really and doesn't actually love him but is a good wife, but the idea that she could watch him cheat on, emotionally and later physically abuse Katherine (by deliberately forcing her to live in dangerously unsafe places when her health was deteriorating), emotionally abuse and blackmail and threaten his own child, and cheat on, have furious arguments with and threaten, publicly condemn, accuse of incest, treason, and adultery, and then straight up murder, and destroy all images of Anne aND THEN FALL IN LOVE WITH HIM. I just. I cannot wrap my head around it. Surely it cannot be possible. Surely.
I enjoyed your take on Jane's song in Six, as it being a reflection of her awareness of how much Henry doesn't love really love her, but I find that I have to skip it every time because it makes me so annoyed that they framed her as a being defined by her loving qualities after suggesting that she might be more than she seemed. It sounds at first like they're going to give us a more complex interpretation of her character but it really felt like a bog-standard 'insert-good-wife-character-here' interpretation instead... I'd be interested to hear more of your thoughts on Six's portrayals of the queens. :)

Wow! you actually were able to present a calm and convincing argument , and I applaud you for that, it’s hard to find people like that on the internet. And honestly I agree I hate how people portray Jane as a never moving lover of Henry, and while I do believe that Jane did have affection for Henry, she wasn’t completely naïve of Henry only wanting her for her children. And like Anne Boleyn she knew how to play the political game. However, I do applaud Six for blatantly stating in her song that Jane is aware that this is a mostly one-sided relationship.

I’m sure you’ve read Hilary Mantel’s series by now but I can’t agree that Cromwell sees Jane as meek and humble. Cromwell sees her as somewhat of a strategist. She cleverly appears to be everything Ann isn’t. She plays a long game. Not very educated but very intuitive. She knows how to keep quiet and when to be theatrical, like when she kissed Henry’s letter and made sure there were witnesses. Cromwell wants to know what mechanisms are turning in Jane’s head. She’s mysterious. That’s why he has a fondness for her. She’s a bit of an assassin but she’s stealthy. I mean, what kind of person would willingly marry the man who just cut off the head of her predecessor? You’ve got to have nerves of steel to do that. She covers it well.

As for audio recordings and the imo GREATEST ANNA BOLENA to this day, listen to the live broadcast from La Scala with Maria Callas (She brought that opera out of obscurity). Callas IS SPINE CHILLING and HEARTBREAKING as Anna and the rest of the cast is also FANTASTIC. I think Jane was a lot more ambitious and intelligent than people usually give her credit for, and if anything, she may have justified to herself that taking Anne's place was the right thing to do to bring back Catholicism to the realm (this was a time where people were very devout, after all). I don't think she went in expecting that Anne would be executed, though - she *was* an anointed queen and everyone, including Jane, probably expected her to be sent to a nunnery or be under house arrest. Like, come on, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Isabella of France did things in terms of treason that were arguably worse than what Anne was accused of, and we don't know how Jane reacted to the news. Just because nothing is recorded about it didn't mean she stayed placid and didn't care. And if anything, she may have had trouble getting pregnant precisely because she was under a lot of stress (understandable). Speaking for myself, I can skip a few months when I get extremely anxious, and I'm not anywhere close to the levels of stress Jane might have experienced.

I may be wrong, but I always thought of Jane as a Catholic sympathizer. I don't know from what type of family she came from, but it was considered a crime to remain loyal to the "bishop of Rome", so it may have been obscured by history, because it was dangerous. But Chapuys referred to Anne Boleyn as "the concubine." And never acknowledged that Catherine was not the Queen. Given this interpretation, Jane would not have felt she was doing anything wrong, because by that time, Catherine had died, and so the King was free, because Catholics would not have recognized Anne as Queen, because she married Henry while Catherine still lived. Those with influence over her may have convinced her that God would reward her and her family if England could be returned to the Catholic fold, if she gave Henry the longed for son. And she may have been convinced, in the same way Henry was convinced that "it was no true marriage" because he had no son after 20 years of marriage. Superstitions of the time seemed to be that the Pope's dispensation held, Catherine was his true wife, but had NOT been a "maiden" upon her marriage to Henry and so the marriage, while legal, was not "fruitful" according to Leviticus etc. But if the King could make a "true marriage" to a true "maiden" then God would bless the marriage and all would be well, and England could be reunited with Rome and the interdict lifted. I'm no historian, but that is how I always viewed her reasoning for marrying him, when it seemed a dangerous thing to do.

They knew him when he WAS young & full of hope. Later he became bitter & resentful. But the other 4 are interesting bcuz they’re unknown other than the “Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived”. Keep up the videos, they’re entertaining & your take is refreshing. A shame Emilia Fox had such bad material to work with. When I first heard that she once played Jane Seymour I thought it made perfect sense as Emilia has that demure kinda pretty kinda plain quality about her.
Annabelle Wallis was too modern and pretty to play Jane in The Tudors. Anita Briem was a better option.
Jane should feature more in onscreen depictions as she not only served Anne but Catherine too.
Jane is an enigma really, we don't know if she was boring or a schemer, maybe somewhere in between.

Henry VIII and his six wives should rank above the Tudors, because the Tudors lacked proper research, Keith Michell was an exceptional Henry VIII. The part was properly portrayed, and all the clothing was properly researched, including the women's head dresses. Catherine of Aragon played by Frances Chuka, and Annette Crosbie, was, correctly, portrayed as having red/gold hair, as was princess Mary. Henry didn't stick around when Jane died, he got out fast, he was terrified of death, and Jane was too ill after Edwards birth to get up and get dressed, she died 12 days after her son was born.

(Also, you have a very pretty cat 🐈‍⬛. I also have a black and white cat 🐈‍⬛ ). It’s hard to get to,know the ‘real’ Jane I think. Who was game enough back then to present their real selves. Especially a woman around the king. I’ve always thought she wasn’t as meek and mild as she has been portrayed. Who could get engaged on the day - or just after - that he’d had his wife executed. Surely anyone would be thinking that “if I don’t produce a son, that could be me”. It was in a way, she still lost her life to Henry’s ambition for a dynasty. 💁‍♀️💁‍♀️🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

It looks like in the ray Winston film they were trying to compare him to the emporia Nero .As he was supposed to have kicked his pregnant wife to death.Just a guess as Henry I fill is often compared to him.

Jane actress was changed in The Tudors because the director didn´t want the audience to hate Jane, as she was part of Henry´s cheating on Anne and her miscarriage

Hmmm… I thought Kate Phillips was pretty good and made sense. She’s NOT meek and quiet. She’s carefully watching everyone. She’s Cromwell’s agent. Her personality comes through when she tells Mary to go back to her sister. Who set the bed curtains on fire? Who tossed the dog out the window? To replace Anne Boleyn, a formidably intelligent, charismatic Queen, Jane would have to take a different approach. She hangs back. Tries to make herself look subordinate. Her family bows in the corridor. Jane barely lifts her eyes. She knows what she’s doing. She’s stalking. The odd thing about Jane is she was unmarried in her late 20s. There’s barely a whisper about her like she didn’t want to draw attention to herself. Her family was VERY ambitious. Why not keep yourself tidy? You can see your predecessor unraveling. Why not help it along a little? What’s a little harmless flirtation with the king? Just keep Anne a little off balance and then move in for the kill.

Giovanna Seymour is a mezzo, not a soprano. For all it's worth, usually in an opera where a soprano is the main character/heroine, the mezzo is the antagonist.

Yeah, I'm not fluent in the technicals of opera. I meant "second soprano" as in "mezzo" but this was a part of the script which I changed at the last minute so I didn't get a chance to proofread.

Great video. Where can I view the opera???? I have three comments. First of all, Jane should have more screen time than she does in all movies. She was so important to Henry that he included her dead self in the family portrait when he was married to Catherine Parr and he chose to be buried beside her. She gave him his main goal in life - his son, Edward. Not that he mattered a hill of beans in history, other than getting Lady Jane Gray killed.
Two, I never realized there were two James in the Tudors. I probably would have caught it on this rewatch that I'm doing now. I like the second one better.
Third, there are some real dud Henry's out there. I think I love the 1933 best, the 1970 one second. The 30's one has the bravado and male machismo and he's fat. Like really fat. The 1970's one did a fantastic job getting fatter throughout the show. JRM didn't have red hair and refused to let them fatten him up properly.

As much as I loved watching the Tudors, and Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn, I think Wolf Hall nailed the more realistic version of things, and if one were to go back in time they'd find Claire Foy a far closer match to the real thing. Maybe even Jane as well. I truly believe Jane was merely a pawn of her male elders. I do wish a lot of these paid service shows would stop reusing different actors in other royal roles. Is Claire Queen Anne or Queen Elizabeth? Is Jessica Raine Catherine Parr or Lady Rochford? Is James Frain Thomas Cromwell or the Spanish ambassador...you get the idea.

I really liked your show when it first came out... Now, it too fast, frantic and cartoonish from mixing in modern day references like the Simpson's and swearing. I don't know if you're doing it to impress 16 year old but I liked when you were a professional movie critic.
