- Ottawa Senators fans can relax as Shane Pinto has re-signed with the Sens on a two year bridge deal at $3.75M AAV!
Brandon Piller and Ross Levitan break down the deal worth $7.5M total and why this is a win win situation for both the team and player! Steve Staios traded winger Mathieu Joseph and a 2025 3rd Round pick to the St. Louis Blues for Future Considerations to off-load his $2.95M contract for the next 2 seasons to free up cap space. He won't be horrible. He will be definitely much more responsible defensively than Chychrun has ever been for the team. He also is a fast skater.
His expected goals last year were not good and suggest that he’s not great defensively. Washington fans were happy to see him go…so, I guess let’s hope for a bounce back?
@@mattgrant447 Expected goals has to do with offensive productivity. I heard Jensen is a reliable defense that has good speed. He is definitely not as coveted as Chychrun. I think/hope he will help stabilize the defense. Senators had way to many puck moving/OFDs. I think Jensen plays a similar style of defense as Zub, minus the Zub's offensive upside we see from time to time.

I love this deal. As both of you noted, it allows for vets who are on 2 year deals to play out their contracts and allow the Sens to make a decision on Norris. Not to mention, Colin White’s buy out will be over by then as well. This management brass is so much smarter when looking at the forward thinking of this club. They aren’t hindsight is 20:20. They are a foresight is 20:20
Flexibility is huge!
Puckpedia has their current roster at 12F, 7D with 1.9M in cap space. They have 3 options with the cap space: sign one more established 4th liner, upgrade the third pairing, or maintain cap flexibility for the opportunity to claim players off waivers when teams try to sneak a player down in the start of season cap-crunch. I'd be looking at a guy like Shattenkirk for another veteran voice who still had a decent season last year. Made just 1.1 M last year. If you replace JBD with Shattenkirk at even 1.4M you've got a really experienced partner for Kleven to learn from while still leaving yourself with 1.3M to carry an extra forward.

Sens are a better team for sure. Dorion was too concerned with fast tracking with the big name signings to hype up the sale price of the team. Staois has checked all the boxes for things that had to be done in the offseason. I can't believe we have Ullmark!

I wasn't a fan of a bridge deal with Pinto but now that I'm looking at it, it actually makes alot of sense to do it this way. Very fair contract for both sides i believe. Solid work PIllzy!!

I’m with Mendes. I will decide at game 20. If Jensen turns out like Hamonic, if Ullmark is struggling and wants out, if Perron is getting walked and if Amadio is Kasty Lite, then we will be the laughing stock of the league. We are being panned now by the same people who raved over our great summers of 22 and 23. All of them think Chychrun is elite and we know better than them that he’s not.
Also the sky can fall and hell can freeze over. Don’t forget.

I agree, the new additions to the team are more versatile, more experienced, more consistent. I liked the effort brought forward by Parker Kelly, but the reality is he was barely a 4th liner on our team. He got a place with colorado given the team is in serious cap space problems. I think our team also gained speed. Having a more balanced look to our lineup and adding veterans also allows the team to restock its prospect pool over the next 2-3 years, which is a dire need. This team has been keen on upgrading talent to the NHL too quickly since the start of the rebuild. Now it's time to take more time to build a stronger team.
BTW I think the speculation that Staios had an offer of a first and a prospect probably, if true, involved a first in 25 or 26. And he had to find a real RD NOW. Everyone agrees with this!!!! He’d be pilloried if he didn’t even if we know those crazy deals to Montour and Tanev will eventually be crippling burdens. And we know most players don’t want to come here. Frankly, the abuse directed at Staios would confirm to most UFAs that they’d be way happier in Utah or Raleigh or Seattle.
Egor traded to Utah's system for one of theirs today. Wish him well, hope he gets his shot with the big club!! Belleville looks like it's going to be a wagon this season

Sens are like the raptors….not a lot of players want to goto Ottawa….so keep the players like Pinto who want to be there. sens are a better team from last year already.
Steve deserves 8 out of 10...if this team has a good goalie and a strong defence focus last year they would have been in the playoffs...Igor was slow. but" good and slow" this won't stop him from becomg a solid NHL bottom 6 player...why not put Joseph on waivers and keep the 3rd round pick? Otherwise Steve you got dealt a losing hand...but played it well

That stat re. how often the Sens win when Pinto gets a point needs to be vetted a bit more. It could mean that he only scores against weaker teams. Wins should be broken down to teams he gets points against that are playoff teams or not.
It is not for Shane pinto , it is for amadio and top 6 player don’t get aav below 3m. It is 3rd liner money .

I feel like a broken record commenting this everywhere, but i don't understand how you trade Joseph with a sweetener without even trying to see if someone will take him on waivers. Maybe they're concerned that it its clear no one else wants him, St. Louis would demand a better sweetener, but I really think someone would have taken him for free.

The waiver period begins only 12 days before the start of a season. If no teams would have picked up Joseph, we may not have had the cap space certainty to sign Pinto. A trade was needed.

@@PhucNguyen-qh8wn Getting rid of Kastellic and Korpisalo in that slam dunk trade was a blessing. We got rid of 3 problems. We got rid of the goaltender with the worst save percentage record last season, we got a top 10 goaltender in the NHL and we got rid of our underwhelming 4th line center that was a weak link. Kastellic def never had Nick Paul's skill, skating and puck control abilities. Kastellic is definitely not as good LMAO.
