    The Wave + has a lot of capabilities and one I was pleasently surprised I discovered. I use this tool at work and wear it on my belt so it is handy at all times but in my trade as an aircraft mechanic we have to replace these items in the cockpit called Korrey switches. Normally you'd have to go grab a set of jeweler's screwdrivers to replace these, not anymore. ;) The eyeglass screwdriver on the Wave works and that's great. It saves a trip down the stairs and to grab your tool bag so that is great! especially if your up in a 747 or 767. It's a nice thing to have that capability. Love watching your videos especially since I'm a bit of a blade/multitool addict ;) I'm thinking of upgrading to the Surge though for it's other capabilities but it doesn't have the jeweler's driver on it. That's kind of a bummer ;( We'll see. Thanks again, I'll keep watching and recommending your videos.

    Found your channel several months ago. My EDC was the Leatherman Supertool 300. First Leatherman I purchased was the Wave first Generation. I switched my EDC to the Wave now that I'm working in an office and always need my Leatherman. From your reviews, I've upgraded to the Leatherman Wave +. I do love having my Supertool 300 as well and keep that in my gear bag. Your reviews are awesome and helpful in deciding what to buy. Been with Leatherman since I got the wave and I'm brand loyal to them. Thinking about now buying the Leatherman Surge as well from your reviews. I do like having all 4 tools like the Wave and Supertool. But I do like the sizzor on the Surge. And the option to add different blades. Thank you for your reviews and research as well as your experience using them. I'll let you know when I purchase the Surge. Looking next month to purchasing that one. Thanks again..

    Even in 2022, the wave + is a very good multitool. Solid design and tools. Recently I found another tool, the Leatherman Rebar, very good price. But the leather sheat has some scratches, and the box was damaged. But actually the Rebar is not bad, very good selection of tools. But the wave is my favorite with the external tools. Very good video, you are very calm explaining every aspect. 👍👍👍

    love how you carried a champion for very long, only logical to end up with the surge, big and capable. I still have mine from 85 or so and it still has a place on my desk.
    What also changed the game a year before the wave came out was the swisstool, all tools accessible from the outside, single deployment without clumping, way superior craftsmanship. The design hasnt changed much since that, it was good to begin with. Only thing i wish it had was bigger, replacable cutters and more of the modularity/user servicable features of the wave/surge.

    Timeless video in 2022 just like Leatherman. I EDC a Super Tool 200 for years! (My first one may have been a non-locking Super Tool). Then I went with the Wave to Charge. This Saturday I picked up a Wave+. I do own an original and PST. I have the Super Tool 300 but can't go back to all inside tools. I do miss the straight profile and leather box sheath of the ST series. My wish list is for a black Surge as I love the idea of having replaceable metal cutting saw blades. A bonus is the diamond file comes off if you need to touch up the Surge straight blade. No matter how old my collection is, they remain 99% rust free.

    I dont carry my WAVE+ that often, but its a fantastic multi tool for a variety of reasons. The WAVE+ is a versatile tool that appeals to a wide variety of people/professions. The SURGE is my EDC multitool, but the without the WAVE the SURGE would not exist. Also, the entire "FREE" series is a bit gimmicky and over priced/hyped. Great video!

    I have a OG wave from 2003 that is pat pending. I used supertools daily from 1999. I was a forester then. I had a friend with a wave in 1999. The major difference was price. I broke my Leatherman supertools pretty often, but the dealer I went to would exchange them. One day in 2003 they said the supertool was discontinued. I called Leatherman and complained about the issue explaining (because of lost tools in the woods) I had bought 5 supertools and wouldn't pay the extra for a wave but needed the full function of supertool. They sent me a wave, the case was so good I never lost one again. I still have it.

    Thanks for this. A good honest useful appraisal without the everytool nerdyness. I have Leatherman tools because I like the weight, feel and quality. I don’t have them for all the tools. I may use many of them but to me it doesn’t really mater. I like quality and good design. It’s a feel good useful thing. For me that’s a good enough reason to have three Leatherman’s. I have, Skeletool, sidekick and the wave+ black. Yeah I’m not a tradesman. I find the hated sunglass screwdriver tool useful when disconnecting fine cable clips connectors on musical instrument circuit boards. Also use it for glasses.

    Great video and review bud. I never will pass up a good vid on a Leatherman. I too am dumbfounded at how they can keep that real estate using the eyeglass screwdrivers. An awl is definitely one of the things I agree on with you as I want one in all of my multitools. Another approach would be for them to create an awl/reamer that fit into the bit exchanger. I'd be satisfied even with that. I absolutely love my surge but I actually do like to pocket carry it sometimes which then I have to find a place to carry the file or saw. Seems there is no perfect solution but it always keeps up being creative to carry what we need. I am of the thought process that they don't really want to satisfy us. That's why we all own so many of these damn things. Lol.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well first of all, thank you for watching. I tend to agree with you. I think they sometimes try to create the almost perfect multi tool to keep enthusiast purchasing more and more. Honestly, from a business perspective, that’s smart. From a consumer perspective however, it leaves us longing for that ever elusive perfect multi tool. They have a tough task though. So many people have varying needs in a multi tool, it’s almost impossible to build something that appeals to every single person. Of course, I have thoughts on that as well, lol.

      @@txtoolcrib You bet. I have enjoyed your multi-tool videos and will keep tuning in. I too haven't found the Free series to be something I want. Maybe in future gens but it seems cheap and not like something I want. I think as far as the Wave idea that you mentioned...I think if they charged a little extra for a 'custom tool where we could go online and check the boxes to have the wave or surge that we wanted it would be killer. I'm sure it would be 30 or so more dollars and we'd have to wait a little longer as they wouldn't be mass producing them but I think it would be a win/win. They go on about being revolutionary and they have over the years. This would be no different. They would be offering something no one else is. Just my two cents.

      @txtoolcrib  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you completely. I would have no problem paying a premium for a Surge that would be custom suited for me. I would like to see a premium steel offering of the Surge as well. Absolutely, and thanks for watching. I started making videos because I was fed up with people doing reviews from a survivalist aspect. I am in no way trying to ridicule anyone from that genre, I just felt that there was a lack of reviews from a tradesman aspect. I’m pretty knowledgeable when it comes to multi tools, and tools in general for that matter. I wanted to give a different perspective for people with my common interests. I think it is an excellent idea for you to get involved with making your own videos from your area of expertise. Coming from cinematography, I’m sure your videos would have a lot more flair than my humble channel. The best reviews are from people that have real life experience in what they are discussing. Best of luck!

    Good observation on moving the small screwdriver to the bit driver holder and making room for an awl. In my opinion the small screwdriver would be better suited to be moved to fit the bit extender to use separately since I find the current small screwdriver setup clumsy to use. The pliers handles keep loosening on my Wave when squeezed hard and will then fold closed before opening the plier jaws. I have adjusted them but they keep loosening. I’m hoping that switching to the Surge and carrying a small eyeglass screwdriver on my keychain will fit my needs better.

    I have a Wave A+, some mods done. To start out black cutters, 154cm blade, cut hook serrated blade, hidden lanyard loop removed, clip on the PE blade side, and Style tweezers in the clip slot on serrated blade side. The clip being swapped makes better ergos using the main blade. The tweezers are a small hot spot while it's opened. Also a PB washer on both sides of the blades, a smoother opening. My Wave A+ is now a favorite to carry.

    I'd love to see the following changes which would make the Wave my ONLY multitool. 1. Get rid of the eye glass tool and replace with an Awl (provide an "eyeglass" bit to go into the bit driver) 2. Instead of separate saw and file, make them just like the Surge - one spot with interchangeable standard T-shank file and saw. size them so that when either the saw blade or the file are in use, they tuck in beside the serated knife blade for storage or provide a mounting area on the side of the tool to tuck into. 3. Use the spot freed up by eliminating the saw or file for a better/bigger pair of scissors and 4. Replace the small scissors with a clam shell package opener or a Philips #2 driver.

    The wave needs a hook on the serrated blade like the charge has. Makes for a great package opener. Agree on the glasses screw driver, it needs to go. Last, replace the file with the same as the surge. I have modified a big recip pruning blade to fit that. I carry it in my pack in the back country as a back up saw. • @StrungBug
    @StrungBug 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for doing great videos, you have helped me a lot. I would like to listen your advice with one dilemma I have: I’m not a heavy user of a multitool and I’m looking for one, I’ve seen the wave and the surge both are great multitools; I thought the surge was too big for me until I saw its lenght and it wasn’t too big for my hands size, thing that surprised me. Like I said, I’m not a heavy user of a multitool and I would like to get one for using it in the woods and for occasional problems I could have, so which one would you recommend to me the wave or the surge? I’d thank you to answer this question.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This can be a difficult question to answer. If you are using your multi tool as a woodsman tool, the lack of an awl could be problematic. The Surge does offer everything I think you need, but if you find yourself hiking a lot, weight might be an issue. There is the Leatherman Signal, that was built more as a woodsman tool. I feel like the Signal lacks some of the functionality you may be looking for. Personally, if it were me, I would choose the Surge all day long. If you are looking for something that is just a bit lighter, then the Victorinox Swisstool is a spectacular multi tool. It does lack a set of scissors though. If you want something even lighter, then the Swisstool Spirit models are an excellent choice as well. The Wave is always a good choice, except that it doesn't have an awl. The Leatherman Rebar is a great multi tool in it's own right and does include an awl. Personally, I choose the Surge. I sacrifice the weight of the tool for it's capability and ruggedness. I think before deciding, you need to think about which tools are the most important to you and for what reason. From there you can narrow down your choices to find what best suits your needs. I will be doing videos on all of the multi tools that I listed above as soon as I can get to them. I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful. What works for me, may not work quite as well for you, and visa versa. At any rate, thank you for taking the time to watch my video. I hope you'll check some of the others out as well.

  • @bileth
    @bileth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi,
    I’ve plunged for a Wave + and absolutely love it. I’m a bit worried about something I’ve seen around, though: that the handles loosens enough to begin closing up when you just want to open up the pliers. Have you experienced this? Is there a fix?

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You could check the pivot tension on the handles, it may have loosened off a bit from use. Normally, over time the handles will loosen with use. It shouldn't be to the point that they will just fly open though. If the screw tension doesn't fix the problem, I would see about getting it warrantied.

    • @bileth
      @bileth 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TX Tool Crib thanks for responding! I haven’t had the problem yet, but I understand it isn’t uncommon.
      I’m a bit suprises that the only thing I’m missing on Wave+ is a depth gage. The ruler on the side I good, but I miss the ability to easily determine dimensions of small screws. This could be easily added to the prying bar, I think. The micro-screwdriver I don’t get much use out of so far.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would be a good idea to laser etch a depth gauge into the large driver. A really good idea in fact. It takes nothing away from the function of the tool but adds another feature.

      My problem with the Free is really the tool selection, especially the inferior file and the missing bit kit ability. It is possible to argue that the Frees would be better pliers (at least for me) than the Wave, but I don’t think it delivers the same capabilities as Wave does. The Surge is too big for me unfortunately. Shouldn’t the Surge have the same issues as the Wave (assuming the designs are similar)?

    I think "best" is determined by use and the appropriate tools.
    Some will claim the Super Tool 300 is "best" despite no outside accessable blades an no scissors. For their needs it may well be the "best" LM. I could live with the have to open it and two hand opening of the knife blade. However, the no scissors makes it unsuitable for my needs. I use the scissors more than the serrated blade, and micro screwdriver driver.
