Tbh there really isn't much you can do. Take long breaks in between playing, try to address what specifically causes the pain when you play, stretch you hands and warm them up first before playing, use ice and heat if you have pain after you are done, and lastly maybe think about switching what controller you play on. A smashbox might give you less pain for instance. Hand pain is mostly genetic unfortunately, two guys can both play on the same controller the same way and one have it and one not.
Next episode: “Why Im switching from boxx controllers.” He tries out an arcade stick. Next episode after that: “Why Im switching from arcade sticks.” He then uses a PS4 controller. Then lastly: “Why Im switching from PS4 controllers” He ends up using a GameCube controller.
The nunchuck is completely fine for the left stick. You can fit in all the sticks you can put in a GCC and the short digital only press of L is what people try to emulate with plugs. Ive used all these boards and the B0xx is the most comfortable. It's not immediately noticeable, but after really spending time with these box style controllers, it does comeout to the most action with least awkward movements.
Hey william i have 2 questions: 1 how do you do things that requieres especific angles like a perfect wavedash, or fire fox angles? 2: how does the control recognize when you want to walk or run?
I tried one of these boxes before but quickly didn’t like it for that reason. So the boxes have these “modifier buttons” which you can hold that then changes what the certain buttons do. For example, let’s say one of the buttons is smash attack, by holding the modifier button that same button is now a tilt attack. Similar for running/dashing and all that. That’s one of the biggest reason why I think the box isn’t super amazing is that now you have to almost think of 2 inputs to do a single output, which is not impossible but takes a shit ton of time to get used to, so I think leffens idea of slowly going to the box will be a bad one. To get good at the box you have to go 100% at it or you’ll just get frustrated and go back to what you’re used.
An arcade stick style for melee I think would be the best. You can get traditional fighting game players into it and stop the poor hand health pandemic
I think a good fix to this, for people who can't afford box controllers such as myself would be to have a melee mod as part of slippi that allows you to change your controls. In ultimate, since you can change your controls, I always jumped with L since I didn't want my right thumb to have the load of jumping, and I wasn't doing anything else with the L button. I thinking something like that would be great for this type of thing
Honestly the simplest way to improve the gamecube-style controller for melee would be to add a ZL set to jump. It makes everything so much easier and even allowed a Melee noob like me to multishine consistently within 1 minute when I could never even pull it off before.
I play on keyboard and I literally cant figure out how to program modifiers for tilts and recovery angles on dolphin if I want too tilt i have to input the direction during another action and it makes playing the game a bit harder.

I've switched off of claw grip for over 5 years now. I usually use shoulder buttons to do everything. Part of the reason I switched to ROA, is because they provide the ability to do that.
Thanks to Zackray I’ve been a Pro Controller user since the beginning of Ultimate. It was hard to create new muscle memory from melee but it was worth it

I need a hands care video, I've been getting into the FGC lately and I find that my hands can only get so much muscle memory at a time, I imagine it's because I don't take very good care of my hands so I'd love to see a video to teach me how to do this. Also congrats on winning evo, I was rooting for you the whole time.
That but also think part of it has to do with Boxx making setting up macros or coding extra behavior more accessible. He thinks all inputs should still done manually one at a time and doesn't think that sort of modding with macros should be tournament legal. Don't take my word for it, but remember reading something along those lines.

My only concern with moving away from the "standard" controller is that anything beyond the gamecube controller becomes programmable. Simple things like - 1 button for short hop, 1 button for normal jump, seem trivial at first. But making 1 button into short hop plus neutral A would be very powerful. Buttons can also be used for spacing. You can now have frame spacing buttons - which enable heroes like Marth to chain grab easier, tipper easier etc. I think it's great to see new innovations - just calling out the inherent advantages which I'm sure will be discussed at length.
Late to the party, but generally the community would regulate what is allowed and what isn't. For instance in the FGC, digital controllers like the hitbox is only allowed a single DPad input which can't have a controller that has multiple ways to jump to make specific combos easier. The idea that current competitive controllers don't offer advantages is already silly. If we allow mods that let you physically feel where certain angles are that aren't standard, and,along buttons easier to press. The only thimg that matters is what the community allows and what they don't.

Totally figured leff would be an early adopter of box type controllers. Personally I'm hype for the smash stick but it'll be cool to see them all compared and contrasted.
TRY USING CLAW GRIP ON GC CONTROLLER IT IS GOOD. I use claw grip. Press B (which is set as A attack) with index finger. Use middle finger for Y (shield) and A (Set to B special). Third finger for X (Jump). That way I can do instant shorthop arials, air dodges and specials and super fast parries without having to use the squishy triggers or slide my thumb. Grab by pressing B and Y. Has basically all the benefits of this on the right hand but still get to use a stick in the left hand.
*that also is very cheaply made and has constant quality issues, which leffen extensively talked about, while a PS5 controller is of really high quality with extremely luxorious features, like the insane rumble and the triggers.

Why is at none of the B0XX-style controllers use an arcade style joystick? At any rate, I would love to see a full explanation of how digital buttons can accomplish the flexibility of an analog stick. How can you input specific angles other than up/down/left/right? Can it shield drop? Moonwalk?

Maybe you haven’t been around the smash scene long enough to see all “these moments”, and I’m not belittling you or trying to downplay your knowledge/experience (feel like I needed to clarify that since it’s the internet and people read comments the wrong way sometimes lol), but to go off on a spree of critiquing TO’s and tourney runners calling them “retarded”/overall insulting their intelligence and gamesmanship for allowing style boxes..... and then finding out how much you enjoy/perform better when using, change your “opinion” on the subject without addressing old comments made to others about the subject. Plinking is also a thing in other games, most notably SF4 where it stands for "priority linking" where if you press mp and the next frame you're still holding mp and you press lp then how the game handles it is you essentially get 2 frames of the same input so that's part of why people never drop Evil Ryu 1-frames and whatnot cause they're essentially 2-frame links. Piano is a bit different where typically it's coupled with negative edge so it gives you essentially a billion different buttons to properly cancel moves that have strict timings like wake up DP or like 6 mp into mp dp so you just press and release rather than 2 presses. Minor thing but for the nerds out there XD

@@Alex-vm6ef nah no joke. i think people overestimate how long it takes to get used to these style controllers from the gamecube controller. granted i’m no leffen but it took me about a month to get up to snuff when i first started using a box style controller.
@@TRENTSINCLAIRE yeah BOXX is kinda fucked up. Used it for like 2 weeks of practice for a money match against a guy who told me boxx was harder then GCC and its the best i have ever played and probably ever will play with fox.

I also remember how fun i had switching from a X360 controller to an arcade stick when playing fighting games. Learning really was the fun part ! And now i would not go back because it feels so much better playing on a stick.

Why is at none of the B0XX-style controllers use an arcade style joystick?
At any rate, I would love to see a full explanation of how digital buttons can accomplish the flexibility of an analog stick. How can you input specific angles other than up/down/left/right? Can it shield drop? Moonwalk?

Maybe you haven’t been around the smash scene long enough to see all “these moments”, and I’m not belittling you or trying to downplay your knowledge/experience (feel like I needed to clarify that since it’s the internet and people read comments the wrong way sometimes lol), but to go off on a spree of critiquing TO’s and tourney runners calling them “retarded”/overall insulting their intelligence and gamesmanship for allowing style boxes..... and then finding out how much you enjoy/perform better when using, change your “opinion” on the subject without addressing old comments made to others about the subject. Plinking is also a thing in other games, most notably SF4 where it stands for "priority linking" where if you press mp and the next frame you're still holding mp and you press lp then how the game handles it is you essentially get 2 frames of the same input so that's part of why people never drop Evil Ryu 1-frames and whatnot cause they're essentially 2-frame links. Piano is a bit different where typically it's coupled with negative edge so it gives you essentially a billion different buttons to properly cancel moves that have strict timings like wake up DP or like 6 mp into mp dp so you just press and release rather than 2 presses. Minor thing but for the nerds out there XD
