Alex's physical qualities are for sure in the top tier, it's so obvious to the eye. But stating that it's his main strenght couldn't be further from the truth. Alex has been winning over older and much more physical players since his debut. His tactical awareness and technical skills clearly stand above the rest and are his best attributes. I remember talking to him after training when he was only 10 years old, i couldn't believe that a kid could understand badminton so well at this age. Great future ahead, true that !
All very true! I don't downplay his other attributes as to win that level of tournament and beat the players he has beaten they must already be high. I'm sure with what you're saying that his future is even brighter

He Bin Jao was a terrirble surprise and I don't think we'll ever know the real reason behind her retirement. She's been in the top 10 for 6 straight years - unfortunately in the shadow of Chen Yu Fei As you said, she really seemed to be a good person outside the court regarding her interview and her interactions with other players.
Yeah I don't think we will either. She did fall into CYF's shadow but she still made a name for herself, through her results, style of play, and her personality
I ran into Joachim in Bandung when Anders was in Paris, as I recognized him, I took the courage to say hi and asked him if he was supposed to be in Paris with Anders, he said that at the Olympics, the coaching is taken over completely by Danish federation, thus, Axelsen also not with his coach either. At one point I had a feeling that Anders could not perform to his best without Joachim and it somehow showed when he lost to Lee Zii Jia. That's why I was utterly surprised when he posted the updates, while I do feel bad for him because this is the person who helped him get back on top, I can't believe that the person that I ran into has that kind of behavior, but I remember what the Professor in my college told me "Gambling is the biggest non-drug addiction."
What were you surprised with about the updates? About the coaching takeover duties? And what about all of this has got anything to do with gambling while he wasnt in Paris? I completely missed the point.
somehow I wonder if you actually met him at a casino in Bandung? and that he made a few bets from the Olympics matches? I dont see the clear connection to this story, although I dont questioned about you ever meeting him and what he told you;im just baffled by what's the utter surprise has anything to do with gambling and his actual updates?
He just lost because lzj was better ,Anders has a mental coach sometimes in Denmark he sits behind him ,he could have requested him if he felt comfortable , Viktor has always 2 Danish coaches behind him because he likes that read ,Anders wasn't even staying in Olympics village, his choice, Denmark want to create a friendly environment for their players unfortunately Anders just played bad .on the issue of gambling Joachim gambled as a player so nothing new old habits are hard to fight.

The split between Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan is one of the weird one for sure. Before watching your video, I thought that one of them decides to retire. I think a "news" series would be nice. Information like "new pairings" or "retirement" added with some analysis on ongoing tournament result would be entertaining to watch.

What a great video as always. Thank you for this summary of everything that has happened just a few weeks ago. I will really miss the watanabe-higashino pair, I just loved so much their playstyle and how fast they were on the court

FeiDin (Goh Sze Fei & Izzudin) winning the Japan Open, their first ever over 500 series event just as they are leaving Bam was bittersweet for many of us malaysian fans. It was like a farewell present for their Bam coaches.
YES! Ben Beckman is back. Hope you had an enjoyable holiday. Great video as always, updating us concerning recent badminton related news. For the series maybe "Ben's Badminton News"? HAHAHA whatever name would be great. Would Jia Yi Fan pair with Chen Qing Chen then in the Hong Kong open?
Thanks for the suggestion and yes I had a lovely holiday. Ready to get back to work. I'm not sure about Chen and Jia in HK, I only happened to notice Li Wen Mei partnering Zhang Shuxian by chance
I for one was very surprised by Alex Laniers win in Japan. Just less than a year ago he lost twice in the junior world championships as no1 rank to both Hu in the individual and Farhan in the team tournament. To go from that to the type of performance he had in Japan in under a year is wild. Also, I love the video and hope you make this format a recurring thing. Monthly badminton news with Ben.
His progression has been impressive, interesting to see how he goes from here. Thank you, I will be doing videos following each Super 500 and above tournament. Maybe a monthly round up in the future
Great vid as always! I'm a fan of JiangWei, excited to see what they do going forwards I also read that Wei Ya Xin couldn't train properly before Japan Open due to injuries, so thats a good win for them i guess. Hopefully they don't get any injuries and can keep improving. Also like the fact that they seem to be ok in both faster and slower playing conditions. Also, the series sounds fun, looking forward to it!
Thank you for this. THIS is definetly the CLOSURE we all needed from such a big and engaging event as the OLYMPICS. This is that missing piece. Oh and yes, Maulana won, and Nagahra split ...as you said.
With Prakash's viral clip, the question was very directed towards the federation and the government's efforts. To which he answered very frankly. This interview was much needed to understand the reality.
Pretty sure HBJ was forced out of the national team by the CBA. I was shocked when she beat CYF, especially after Marin had already qualified for the semis. HBJ clarified she will keep playing badminton, but for her provincial team. Don't be surprised if, someday, she will be welcomed at the national team again, after the air has been cleared.
I would be very surprised if that happens. Don't think I have ever seen a Chinese player retire, have their ranking withdrawn, then come back. Would be historic
I don’t think it’s valid to say this with such certainty while not providing any evidence. The China national badminton team doesn’t have a very strong women’s singles lineup like it used to be in the old days. It can’t afford to lose an established high level player, especially for the reason you speculated. Chen Yufei actually wants to retire, the national team tries to retain her but she has not decided yet. It's not like that He Bingjiao's retirement from the team would help retain Chen Yufei, and definitely not in the interest of the team when you don't even know who can acutally take the place of any of these two in the team events. Chen Yufei said she will not play the Malaysia Open next year, so she might not return to court sooner than that. In fact, no one is sure if she's going to return to national team. We can only be sure that she will play the National Games next year, which is the same for He Bingjiao. After the National Games, who knows if any of the two (and the 4 gold medalists in Paris) will continue to play.
Love your work Ben! Could you make a video on how we can make pro badminton a more popular sport here in the West? The prize money won from badminton tournaments is not a lot compared to other sports.
That is a video idea I've had in my mind for a while. Will take a lot of thought as although the reasons seem obvious, I believe there's probably quite a lot to it. Thank you though, I'm glad you like my stuff 😊
Hi Ben are you going to talk about the Paralympics? I think it would be interesting if you could talk about their struggles on the field. There are so many great games from them and they are really worth talking about.
The Olympics always represents a high water mark for many badminton players and, following the event, there must be a period of reflection when players need to consider if they have the drive and commitment to play on for the next four years til the next Olympics, or to enact changes which they hope will bear fruit four years down the line.
Hi Ben, have you considered doing live commentaries for select matches of interest you would watch live? Perhaps by setting up live streams with super chats for interactions. You don't need to comment continuously with little to contribute like some of the commentators. I like Steen's style, his comments have substance and are educational. On the technical side, we can simply open simultaneously both the match live stream and your live stream to make it work. In addition, maybe from time to time, you can find active players for collaborations to get their insights on how they analyze their opponents of their discipline.
I have considered it but I'll be honest I haven't considered it seriously. Maybe I'll look into it though as I do like the idea. A watch along with me...a nice way to get around copyright too
Ahn si yungs story reminds me of those dancers and athletes too, who were mistreated in training and heavy handed mafia style treatment of gymnasts and sports people around the world !! These so called trainers / coaches, under human rights laws, should be removed and taken to court asap !!! 😮😮😊😊😊
Jia Yifan said in an interview that she's waiting for Chen Qingchen to return. Right now she plays with different partners to maintain high level competitions. Let's hope our World No. 1 WD extend their careers together🥹 Meanwhile, we can also enjoy some interesting pairings.
The comment from Prakash is on point regarding the mental health which we often neglect but wasn't the case for Laksha imo, he was very calm during the Olympic and had everything in control.
What prakash sir spoke was absolutely on point. It's high time players should start showing upto the occasion; fedration, government & coaches have all done their bit. You can't keep complaining about lack of resources & funds as it used to be say 15-20 years ago. Everything has improved leaps and bounds yet the medal tally closes in single digits every single olympics!
There is a reason why your understanding of Prakash's comments might be right is because he is the founder of Athlete sponsorship org called OGQ. He is also the head of PDCSE, a multi-sport excellence center in his name and another famous sportsman from his own city Rahul Dravid. He actively works with sponsors and the government to get clearances for athletes, coaches, physios, other support staff. He is one of the people answerable to the people who make decisions and put the money into sport in India.
Thank you Ben for the great content but how come you didn't mention anything regarding Carolina Marin's injury that would probably cost her medal contention in the French Olympics.
This video was more focused on what happened after the Olympics. I guess I could have spoken about her statement where she said she might never pick up a racket again, but at the time of writing, I didn't think of that.
@@BenBeckmanBadminton That's fine shoud not have ask for more . I think you channel is poised to become the most comprehensive source for in-depth analysis of latest news/developments players, tournaments, and key insights within the Badminton Nation going forward Keep it up ,Thanks 👍👍👍
Hopefully ASY has personally apologized to WonHoo & NaEun for ruining their moment rather then an Instagram post don't think many people anticipated them to win a medal probably the greatest moment of their life ruined by those ASY comments getting all the attention...Saw a clip on twitter where NaEun was saying in an interview that she won't be answring any questions regarding ASY situation/comments, felt sorry for them
I'd like to think she already has, I hope that's the case. ASY did show genuine remorse at making her comments when she did, a simple lack of foresight. That doesn't take away from what she said though, it's a big issue and I hope it's investigated well and sorted for the future
Prakash sir made a valid point. Players must take ownership of their performance. The sports federation and government have provided adequate support and resources, unlike 10-15 years ago. It's time to stop citing a lack of support or funding as an excuse for poor performance.
@@BenBeckmanBadmintonNahh no one actually but I felt that he not particularly criticizing Lakshya he spoke against the whole badminton contigent of India and the the other athletes tooo
Looking at ASY situation with KBA and also how some other asian badminton associations work ..i just realise how in India everything is so different All the top players are pretty much independent but still associated with BAI only for representing India in International tournaments and nothing else BAI gets government funds but they only spend on top20 ranked players of the country to fund them for them to participate in international tournaments other than that all players are just on their own Like BAI is based in New Delhi but india's most of players are either in hyderbad in gopichand's academy like Satchi and pronnoy ,srikanth and earlier sindhu and saina and others are in bangalore like lakshya, kiran george and sindhu also shifted there couple of years ago Both of them are private academies and mostly get funds from private entities and not by government Like in caes of Lakshya he was supported by a private NGO Olympic Gold Quest owned by an ex indian hockey player ,since his childhood and his coaches fees like earlier morten frost then yoo yung sung or anup sridhar all are paid by OGQ and not by government ...all his international tours for training since he was 11 were funded by OGQ and now he has multiple sponsors for different thing after he got some fame And all the athletes can have as many endorsements as they want ..they can get into any contract with any talent management agency..BAI has zero say in that .. Players can choose if thet want to rest or what kind of training they want Basically BAI doesn't really concern with most of India's top players bcs they trained in private academies not with government funds maybe the kids who are now trained under BAI get controled by them..but no one of those kids are anywhere in top and most of india's junior top players are also from priavte academies
I wont be suprised if He BJ is forced out. Look at the olympics women table tennis final between Chen Meng vs Sun Yingsha. Before the match even started the rumors already out that Chen Meng was ordered to let Sun win bc she is the future. Chen Meng ignored it and won. Chinese supporters at the arena booed her loudly. Even the commentators were confused why they did that. And who was there at the closing ceremony during the passing of olympic flame? Sun Yingsha.
Badminton has changed a lot,in Lin-lee era, badmintin was much more tactical in my opinion, nowadays players re stronger, rally pace is fast but very low in tactics.Players nowdays don't inject pace or slows down rally but rather plays in one rhythm, thats pretty boring, and their movements are not that fluid like those of old players,it can be easily disrupted.Modern players try to one shot their opponent wheareas in earlier times, players set up the rally before finishing it.
When I saw Lanier, I immediately thought: "That's a young Chen Long." He mirrors his style almost exactly: - Great defense and reflexes - A solid backhand defense and attack + finger power (Chen Long had a good forearm too) - Formidable stamina - Consistency - A good attack that he does not rely on or overuse like, say, LZJ or Axelsen. Now overall he's slightly more aggressive than Chen Long, but do you get what I mean?
Shi Yu Qi has definitely lost a great load of confidence after the Olympic loss. Why? In the Malaysia open of this year, though he may have not destroyed viktor, he definitely gave off the aura that he was the better one on court. He still thinks he could've been the Olympic champ and is beating himself up.
Maybe that's why but it could just be a post Olympic slump. The Olympics is such a big event, the biggest, that those with a real chance (like Shi) will put everything towards it. After it's all said and done, regardless of how you do, there's a real chance those players will suffer a low period. As a result I'm not surprised SYQ is suffering the way he is. Let's hope he returns soon
Goh/Izzuddin really needs a good coach and a strong support team if they want to continue winning major titles. I really hope they seriously considered the cost of losing Rexy, Tan Bin Shen, high quality sparring partners and BAM's support staff.
Sparring looks quite sorted as I've seen them training with Ong/Teo but everything else I'm not sure. We'll have to see what happens, it certainly adds more things to their plate in regards to what they have to do and manage
Indonesia MS is in a sorry state. Christie should have been a favorite to win the gold medal match, having won the all england and the asian games, yet he went out in the group stage. Ginting was the bronze medallist last time, yet he also went out in the group stage, losing to... Popov? It should have been an easy win for Anthony. Since Taufik Indonesian MS has deteriorated, and it's worse than ever now. Ginting and Christie need to sort themselves out, especially since the '28 Olympics may be their last chance (well Christie is younger so MAYBE '32 could be good for him). It's a bad situation for them.
There is hope in the juniors though, plus Christie and Ginting can still bring it. You have Alwi Farhan and also that 17 year old who beat Alwi in the final of the Indonesia tournament recently. Indonesia in general need to have a look at themselves, many former players and stars have said so, so I am hopeful they will listen and move forward positively and productively
@@BenBeckmanBadminton Yep, I also noticed that players such as Kevin Sanjaya and Praveen Jordan really dropped off too (the former is of course retired now).
I think you miss one out. WS Gold Medalist An Se Young publicly criticised the national team's training methods as outdated and predominantly focused on doubles players.
@@KimGjerstad it's not about gossip he was wishing all the players be it for their retirement or having a kid for jojo that's why I said he forgot to mention kean yew
ASY is not gonna change anything, BKA as an organisation only see its players as employees, and change only happen if those in the management initiate it. They couldn't care less even if a gold medalist were to leave them
India's performance at the olympics was pathetic, despite clearly better facilities provided to the Athletes relatively, when compared to previous olympics. There was a time when various Indian Federations could not even afford Uniforms\Kit for the Teams !. By comparison Indian Athletes are now provided with more or less with, facilities which are close to World Class. In many Sports in the Olympics, Indian Olympics Athletes had 10+ 4th Place finishes ! in 2024 Olympics.
They didnt provide facilities for the games which have more chances of winning medals...its nit the facilities which make you win medals all the time..like just providing some money to top atheletes without having any plan to find talent .they should have start huge investment in swimming and gymnast ...badminton ,hockey and archery has very limited medals And it was quite ironical that among 117 athletes the one who got public lashes were the ones who were the 20% top performers .
I hope this goes across every playing nations because in Africa we suffer worst situations and is the reason we truly can’t break through to world badminton 🏸 rankings we have large number of athletes but????
Great content for badminton fans!! Really helpful in helping us keeping up to date. Thank you and please continue to

I have considered it but I'll be honest I haven't considered it seriously. Maybe I'll look into it though as I do like the idea. A watch along with me...a nice way to get around copyright too
Great Video, keep it up!
That's the plan 👌🏻
I have had that thought recently. Thanks for letting me know
The comment from Prakash is on point regarding the mental health which we often neglect but wasn't the case for Laksha imo, he was very calm during the Olympic and had everything in control.
I felt that sentiment in his words
There is a reason why your understanding of Prakash's comments might be right is because he is the founder of Athlete sponsorship org called OGQ. He is also the head of PDCSE, a multi-sport excellence center in his name and another famous sportsman from his own city Rahul Dravid. He actively works with sponsors and the government to get clearances for athletes, coaches, physios, other support staff. He is one of the people answerable to the people who make decisions and put the money into sport in India.
Interesting stuff
Thank you Ben for the great content
but how come you didn't mention anything regarding Carolina Marin's
injury that would probably cost her medal contention
in the French Olympics.
This video was more focused on what happened after the Olympics. I guess I could have spoken about her statement where she said she might never pick up a racket again, but at the time of writing, I didn't think of that.
@@BenBeckmanBadminton That's fine shoud not have ask for more .
I think you channel is poised to become the most comprehensive source for in-depth analysis of latest news/developments players, tournaments, and key insights within the Badminton Nation going forward
Keep it up ,Thanks 👍👍👍
@show68channel57 thank you 😊 🙏🏻
good content!
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you
Hopefully ASY has personally apologized to WonHoo & NaEun for ruining their moment rather then an Instagram post don't think many people anticipated them to win a medal probably the greatest moment of their life ruined by those ASY comments getting all the attention...Saw a clip on twitter where NaEun was saying in an interview that she won't be answring any questions regarding ASY situation/comments, felt sorry for them
I'd like to think she already has, I hope that's the case. ASY did show genuine remorse at making her comments when she did, a simple lack of foresight. That doesn't take away from what she said though, it's a big issue and I hope it's investigated well and sorted for the future
Yuta Watanabe getting a men's doubles partner will be extremely exciting
It really would be
it took me until now to notice the benn beckman in the background of a ben beckman video
🤣😏
He Bing Jiao , She is such a young lady with a big heart
By the way , Wishes her all the best
Prakash sir made a valid point. Players must take ownership of their performance. The sports federation and government have provided adequate support and resources, unlike 10-15 years ago. It's time to stop citing a lack of support or funding as an excuse for poor performance.
True, but did any badminton players use that as an excuse this time?
@@BenBeckmanBadmintonNahh no one actually but I felt that he not particularly criticizing Lakshya he spoke against the whole badminton contigent of India and the the other athletes tooo
Many players retired but man hendra/ahsan still going strong
beasts!
Setiawan is the GOAT of men's doubles, imho :)
Looking at ASY situation with KBA and also how some other asian badminton associations work ..i just realise how in India everything is so different
All the top players are pretty much independent but still associated with BAI only for representing India in International tournaments and nothing else
BAI gets government funds but they only spend on top20 ranked players of the country to fund them for them to participate in international tournaments other than that all players are just on their own
Like BAI is based in New Delhi but india's most of players are either in hyderbad in gopichand's academy like Satchi and pronnoy ,srikanth and earlier sindhu and saina and others are in bangalore like lakshya, kiran george and sindhu also shifted there couple of years ago
Both of them are private academies and mostly get funds from private entities and not by government
Like in caes of Lakshya he was supported by a private NGO Olympic Gold Quest owned by an ex indian hockey player ,since his childhood and his coaches fees like earlier morten frost then yoo yung sung or anup sridhar all are paid by OGQ and not by government ...all his international tours for training since he was 11 were funded by OGQ and now he has multiple sponsors for different thing after he got some fame
And all the athletes can have as many endorsements as they want ..they can get into any contract with any talent management agency..BAI has zero say in that ..
Players can choose if thet want to rest or what kind of training they want
Basically BAI doesn't really concern with most of India's top players bcs they trained in private academies not with government funds maybe the kids who are now trained under BAI get controled by them..but no one of those kids are anywhere in top and most of india's junior top players are also from priavte academies
I don't really agree with this. I won't go into it all, maybe I'll save it for a video, but just that I don't think this is the case.
@@BenBeckmanBadminton Sure, will be excited for it,please make it soon and sorry for late reply
When I saw Lanier, I immediately thought: "That's a young Chen Long." He mirrors his style almost exactly:
- Great defense and reflexes
- A solid backhand defense and attack + finger power (Chen Long had a good forearm too)
- Formidable stamina
- Consistency
- A good attack that he does not rely on or overuse like, say, LZJ or Axelsen.
Now overall he's slightly more aggressive than Chen Long, but do you get what I mean?
I think a lot of people saw Jan O Jorgensen. I'm not sure I see Chen Long in Alex, some similar skill sets but that can be said about many others.
@@BenBeckmanBadminton That's a fair take.
Let's hope he returns soon
carnando maulana is something i have high hopes
Will you cover the result of the Paralympics?
I don't think I'll dedicate a YT video to it
Guess we aren't going to see the two Popovs together in singles anytime soon.
French MS in good shape
LWM JYF might not be permanent as you mentioned at the end ;)
Yeah exactly. Thanks for sticking around 😎
Loh Kean Yew also had a child
@@BenBeckmanBadminton But I hope they do move forwards well. They need to.
I think you miss one out. WS Gold Medalist An Se Young publicly criticised the national team's training methods as outdated and predominantly focused on doubles players.
I did actually mention that but not the part about the training being focused on doubles
Just noticed your Ben Beckman figure 15:27 😂😂😂😂
hahaha, it has to make an appearance
Why not try a LIVE Watchalong stream with your commentary?
I might do this, I just wonder whether it'll get past copyright 🤔
How about Ben Beckmanton? :)
I think you forgot to add that loh kean yew also had a kid
Ah yes, now you mention that he did! Congrats to Loh and his partner
While it's a beautiful moment, it doesn't qualify as juicy gossip. 😅
@@KimGjerstad it's not about gossip he was wishing all the players be it for their retirement or having a kid for jojo that's why I said he forgot to mention kean yew
@ShivagamiDevi you're right. I didn't see the end of the video before writing. My bad
ASY is not gonna change anything, BKA as an organisation only see its players as employees, and change only happen if those in the management initiate it. They couldn't care less even if a gold medalist were to leave them
Sadly I do somewhat agree, one player, even ASY, is unlikely to change things. But public pressure etc might. Let's see

Chae yu jung also has switched partner.
yes I have recently seen
Didn't LKY also become a dad!!!?
He did
It seems like Joachim was banned for 18 months in 2019 over match fixing/betting as well, so this seems to be a pattern of his
Yeah and like I said in the video I distinctly remember his name when people were talking about betting on matches back in 2007/8
@@BenBeckmanBadminton right, I missed that you'd covered both those points in your video 😅 thanks Ben

They didnt provide facilities for the games which have more chances of winning medals...its nit the facilities which make you win medals all the time..like just providing some money to top atheletes without having any plan to find talent
.they should have start huge investment in swimming and gymnast ...badminton ,hockey and archery has very limited medals
And it was quite ironical that among 117 athletes the one who got public lashes were the ones who were the 20% top performers .
Whenever a legend with a ton of experience criticizes you, just shut up and listen.
