Honestly, I feel like Gold is something more than just a Red rehash - he represents a return to the things we loved about Pokemon the first time around. By the time Gold/Silver came out, the players that loved Red/Blue were just starting to move on, getting kinda bored of the pokemon world and starting to grow up. When someone from the old camp picks up Gold/Silver, they begin in a familiar storyline with a basically familiar character, sure, but think about the pokemon available to you: mostly new stuff, but with old familiars peppered in here and there, laying the groundwork and getting in your head - planting the seeds for the big trip at the end. By the time you reach the end, going through a story that makes callback after callback to the trials of the original, you finally go back to the Kanto region... but there's a major difference - RED seems to have ABANDONED Kanto. YOU have abandoned pokemon. So now, you as a player are looking for YOURSELF, going through and remembering all the things you loved and held dear until finally, you find Red at the top of Mt. Silver, possibly the LONELIEST setting in the entire game (isolated location, cold snow blowing, literally nothing but Red on that final screen...) and you fight... and you REMIND YOURSELF of everything you once loved. Despite the fact that you've risen to the top as Red, where there are no more challenges, you now come here as Gold to tell yourself that it doesn't matter, that there is still stuff to love out there and that there is ALWAYS something new to see or to learn or to catch, even if it maybe takes the next generation of games to come out before you can do it. That's why Red returns in later installments, the joy he takes in meeting the next challenge is rekindled by Gold, who shared the same journey but discovered a little something MORE along the way.
And THAT'S the story you never knew.
Wow this actually makes sense and feels deeper than the video unless I missed something.
I can believe this theory especially since Gold and Silver were originally planned to be the end of Pokemon.

I expected something about the Red v Gold fight being symbolic of us fighting ourselves.
It could be. It could be that you have to overcome what you did in Kanto. You have to beat yourself and prove to you ( or in this case to red) that you have become more experienced.
I thought of the fight as the player symbolically growing up.
think of gold as the player and red as the player back when they first played pokemon.
once you defeat red, and therefore your inner childishness, the game ends. It represents how the player has grown as a person since they first played gen 1.

I think it's more about overcoming the person you were in the past. The game is designed that *you* and only you become the very best. The only person who could possibly be better is yourself, that's symbolized by Red. By beating Red, you have overcome the only possible obstacle in your pokemon journey, yourself.
Personally, I'm definitely biased, but my money would usually be on Red.

The story about gold is how he represents the new generation of trainers. They had to walk the their own path + the same path the old guard went through to understand what it means to be a trainer back then. It's why the climb up mount silver is like a journey through maturity if that make sense. I look at how the base of the mountain looks. Filled with lush green scenery but the more you climb the mountain, the harsher the scenery gets. It even begins to snow, almost as a sign that you are not that green horn kid anymore at the start of the journey. Then at the very top of the mountain, the old generation welcomes the new generation with a battle.
This makes sense because many of us remember what it was like playing our first pokemon game(red/blue/yellow/green), catching whatever pokemon we found and beating the game with the ragtag bunch. As time went on, we gained experience about the game, we became somewhat crueler, not just any pokemon could be on the main team, but the ones that met our new standards. We found out new information that gave us the edge. We trained our pokemon harshly until we was at the very top and there is where we waited for the new generation to get to our level. We are red, welcoming gold to the high competitive level of pokemon battles with a match they will never forget.
Meanwhile for others at that time. heard how good the first pokemon games were and choose to start with gold/silver/crystal or their parents picked that. They got to experience a different journey, then see what the old journey was like after that. Once they understood what it took to beat the old stronger gym leaders, they could now face red, the old generation who has had nothing but time to train his mon's since red/blue who could take them over to the new map. Gold is now able to reach our frightening level.
Also the battle is open ended because it is more of a test on what gold has learned. Did he learn how to train his pokemon properly or does red have to school gold's lv67 ho-oh with a jolly lv1 rat with focus slash and endeavor/quick attack combo?

Gold has a deeper meaning. He is to represent the fact that no ones journey is someone elses as well. That everyones journey is different, and that no one journey makes you any better than someone else. Its about stepping out from someone elses shadow. Its about showing others that you can be just as good as the next guy. Its about being Gold in your own special way.

I think another cool parallel between the two is the fact that Red's starter is usually considered Pikachu or Charmander. Gold's starter is considered Cyndaquil (at least I think so. Ive seen a lot of artwork with Gold and Typhlosion as well). Cyndaquil can be seen as a hybrid of Pikachu and Charmander in that it's mouse and a fire type.
Actually Red’s usually seen with either Pikachu or Bulbasaur and only in one continuity outside of player choice does he pick Charmsnder. Gold is most commonly seen with Cyndaquil though.

I remember getting to Red in Gold. The sheer difference in levels was astonishing. I remember getting stomped by him, like he held me down and made me watch as he Pokemon completely demolished mine. And then I shed tears and came back stronger like a DBZ protagonist and crushed him...good times, good times
So what, you guys expected dialogue and personality from these franchises' main characters back when they were on NES and Game Boy? Of course they're not going to have personality and they're all gonna be mutes, they probably didn't have the space on the cartridge to give them that dialogue or personality. Seriously though, Little Mac, Samus, and Mario were all meant to be their own characters and Agent 3 is the same inkling you're gonna use later to dress up and play multiplayer with (in other words your own character). Almost all Pokemon playable characters along with Link were the only ones who were meant to be (as you guys said) a "link" between the character and player.
Also, damn, you guys haven't really been trying that hard with these recently, have you? The Fallout one has already been discussed a million times before, and the Battlefront one didn't really sound as fleshed out as these videos used to be.

I usually like your videos, but this one says a whole lot of nothing. In general it's good game design to leave your protagonist a blank slate. It fosters immersion. Your reason for wanting more fleshed out characters is shallow and misguided at best, and betrays a fundamental lack of understanding when it comes to game design and a very short memory for gaming history. Remember Samus in Other M? Remember how well that shit turned out? And that fiasco wasn't even the fault of poor writing. If it had been a movie outright it might have been pretty decent. The problem was that the game asked you to step into the shoes of a character who was already full up with personality. There's no room for you in the character. You don't get to consider the journey to be your own because the "character" of Samus has already claimed it. And that's the exact reason Nintendo dominated the market for so many years - "blank slate" characters give you ownership of the adventure. It's happening to YOU. Not to some character. To YOU. Anything else would be neglecting a significant advantage of the interactive medium. It's actually bad form to give your character too much personality, because it removes the player's agency in the story. It destroys immersion if the character's personality conflicts with the way the character chooses to play, which it is very likely to. It forces the player into a box, and if they step outside it, the suspension of disbelief is gone. So I don't know why you complain about all these characters being "you" when really, writing them as such is vital to immersion.

i think the battle of Gold vs Red shows badges cant really determine how strong you are but by long term experience with your pokemon will show the true power of you and your pokemon.
